by Brian Manning
WALSENBURG — At their monthly meeting Tuesday night, Huerfano County Republicans discussed their upcoming caucus.  Republican chair Debi Sporleder said all registered Republicans have the opportunity to give their input in the political process. She called the meeting to order and led the group in an Invocation and Pledge of Allegiance and began the general meeting by calling for reports.
County commissioner Ray Garcia reported the handicapped bathrooms in the community center were being updated to meet ADA codes and they were making progress.  He also said that they are still working to get the prison to open, which would bring revenue and jobs to the county.
County commissioner Max Vezzani said a consulting firm has been working in Cuchara clearing brush to make it more fire safe.  They will be holding a public meeting to discuss the latest fire plan.  He also discussed the fact that garbage disposal costs were extremely high and they were looking at other ways to save these costs.
Ron Nielsen stated the La Veta Fire District is applying for a grant to purchase a fire tender (water tanker).  He also gave a report on the hospital board, which has developed a strict protocol for stroke victims that might save many lives.  This system can get information about drugs and treatment for actions that should be taken.  He also talked about the financial struggle they are having due to increased costs and the Gallagher Amendment that limits funding.
David Tesitor, who sits on the RE-1 school district board, talked about the recent lockdowns of the schools and said there was a credible threat and to be on the safe side they closed the schools.  He also said they were updating their technology equipment and looking for funds.
Neecee Lane gave a report for the tourism board.  They are hoping to get people to exit the highway and visit the many attractions in Huerfano County.
Jim Chamberlain announced he is running for Huerfano County Sheriff, and will start his campaign. He cited his experience in law enforcement and the military as qualifications.
Marcy Freeburg then discussed the caucus, which will be held on Tuesday, March 6 at the Methodist Church in La Veta for precincts 2, 5, 9 and 10, and all other precincts at the Huerfano Community Bible Church at 603 Leon in Walsenburg.  They begin at 7 pm so come early for registration.
At caucus, members will elect delegates and alternates to the county assembly, which will be held on March 17 at the La Plaza.  It is important that all registered Republicans attend caucus to be part of the process so they can be heard.  The county assembly will determine who goes to the state assembly in Boulder on April 14.
