Huerfano Parks and Recreation District nets $45,000 GOCO grant for Civic League Park playground

DENVER — The Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) Board has awarded the Huerfano Parks and Recreation District (HPRD) a $45,000 grant to improve Civic League Park in Walsenburg.

In partnership with the City of Walsenburg, HPRD will invest its GOCO mini grant in upgrading the existing park site at the corner of Hendren Ave. and Pinon St. The partners aim to create a park that encourages youth, adults, and those with disabilities to be more active. The GOCO grant will leverage $11,285 in matching funds from LiveWell Huerfano County.

Two new playground areas will accommodate large numbers of children and adults, catering to many different age levels.

One area is designed for kids between the ages of six and 24 months to safely play and build skills, with equipment focusing on sensory experience and developing motor, cognitive, and social-emotional skills. Another section of the playground will have 15 open-air fitness stations and five ADA-accessible fitness stations. GOCO funding will also build a pickleball court for the senior population, in addition to ADA-compliant park benches and drinking fountains.

HPRD aims to complete the play area renovations in time for an August 2018 grand re-opening. To date, GOCO has invested $3.8 million in projects in Huerfano County and has conserved 7,400 acres of land there. GOCO funding has supported the Huerfano Community Sports Complex, Miners Plaza in Walsenburg, and the La Veta School playground. GOCO funding also supports operations and management at Lathrop State Park.

Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) invests a portion of Colorado Lottery proceeds to help preserve and enhance the state’s parks, trails, wildlife, rivers, and open spaces. GOCO’s independent board awards competitive grants to local governments and land trusts, and makes investments through Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Created when voters approved a Constitutional Amendment in 1992, GOCO has since funded more than 5,000 projects in urban and rural areas in all 64 counties without any tax dollar support.
