HUERFANO — The Huerfano County Democrats held their county assembly on March 24.  Chairman Dale Lyons gaveled the assembly to order at 9 am.  Our party credentialed 39 delegates, representing precincts covering all of Huerfano County.
The delegates were presented with the progress that has been made in our area from our incumbent democratic county officials.  We heard of how online records are moving forward from assessor Elisha Meadows.
County clerk Nancy Cruz told of the success or our updated dominion election process.  She gave us information on the web site huerfano.us, where it is possible to renew your license online or click on govotecolorado.com, where you can update your voter information.  Her mantra is ‘check your registration and vote!’
Our county commissioner, Gerald Cisneros, told of improvements of our roads with chip seal and gravel as well as improvements at the court house, community center, and across the county.
Sheriff Bruce Newman reassured us the move to replace the City of Walsenburg’s police department with the sheriff’s office has been successful and issues of concern are continuing to be worked out.  Training of new deputies has been a priority.  Crime is down in our county, while it has increased in other counties.
Coroner Vonnie Valdez agreed that the internet updating has helped her office as well.  She continues to work as an advocate for her client, the deceased, and their families.  The coroner’s office has dealt with investigations and notifications for over 300 deaths in the past year.
Treasurer Debra Reynolds also spoke of the online updating which allows payments by credit card and cooperation with other county offices.  She encourages Huerfano County’s senior citizen residents to come in and hear about the Homestead Act and how it can impact their taxes.
The delegates felt the records of the  incumbents spoke for themselves and were pleased to place this Democratic Party slate on the ballot by acclamation.
Delegates gave all 39 straw poll votes to Diane Mitsch Bush, Democratic candidate for US Congress-Colorado District 3 House of Representatives.
The delegates divided their preference poll votes among the top three governor candidates of Jared Polis, Cary Kennedy, and Mike Johnston.  Huerfano County Democrats then selected five delegates to the state assembly, which will be held on April 13 and 14.  They are Travis Nelson, Dale Lyons, Mark Craddock, Eleanor Foley, and Gary Greenwood.
The party then discussed resolutions which are to be moved on to party platform committees at the state level.  We asked that more attention be guided toward mental health and net neutrality issues.
All in attendance were reminded about our annual fundraising event, the Mother Jones Dinner.  The dinner is on April 21 at 5:30 pm and is again being catered by the historic La Plaza Inn.  Tickets are $30 and can be bought from one of your local Democratic Party members or online at huerfanodems.org.
We thanked our Huerfano County elected officials for the coffee and donuts and adjourned.
