WALSENBURG — Huerfano County EMS held their annual appreciation luncheon on Sunday, May 15 to kick off EMS week. Approximately 50 people attended the function that featured a host of various team building games, awards presentations, and food prepared by the responders themselves. All attendees enjoyed the evening as they reflected on the outstanding teamwork and dedication of the EMS providers.
Special guests in attendance were many of the emergency responders from a host of local agencies and the Huerfano County Commissioners.
Various service awards were presented to Huerfano EMS and LaVeta Responders.
The lifesaving award (CORE Save), for personnel that effectively resuscitated a patient with no signs of life went to: Mark Sandoval, Brad Mullens, Beverly Trujillo, Fred Partee, Ben Gladden, Tom Griggs, Robert Franz, Sascha Henson, Alex Roybal all from Huerfano EMS.
The awards for Field Delivery went to Robert Franz and Josh Segura of Huerfano EMS.
The Jaws of Life Green Cross Award went to Dave DeTray of LaVeta Fire and Alex Roybal, Fred Partee, and Robert Franz all of Huerfano EMS.
Awards for length of service from 1 year to 32 years of service were also handed out.
Another activity for EMS week was a special trip to La Veta schools. EMS met with pre-school through 5th grade, talking about ambulances and how to call for one. The EMS personnel who went to the school also answered great questions from their audience, such as: how fast do they go? and what would they do if they couldn’t get into someone’s house? The students saw first hand all the equipment on the ambulance and got to put their finger in the pulse/ox monitor. They each also received a ride on the power cot and got lifted into the ambulance.
