WALSENBURG — On Tuesday, May 17 the Huerfano County Commissioners honored six WW II era veterans, all of whom are residents of the Spanish Peaks Veterans CommunityLiving Center. The commissioners presented each of the six with a proclamation honoring them with their own day of recognition within Huerfano County. The veterans, all seated in the front row are, (left to right);
Lee Crump, US Navy 3rd Class Mechanics Mate who served in the South Pacific and Asia Pacific and won the Victory Medal, Philippines Liberation Medal, two Bronze Stars and was honored with June 11, 2016 as his day in Huerfano County;
Pete Gallegos, who served as an Infantry Platoon First Sgt. in Germany, Korea and Vietnam and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, two Bronze Stars, and the WW II Victory Battle Star and was honored locally with a proclamation naming May 21, 2016 as his day in Huerfano County;
Sam Haun, US Navy veteran who was stationed in Maryland and the Pacific Ocean Theater of Operations as a Seaman 1st Class winning the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and honored by the county commissioners’ proclamation of May 23, 2016 as his day of recognition;
Calvin Quain, US Navy Seaman First Class who spent over two years stationed at Camp Perry in Williamsburg, VA was honored with June 4, 2016 proclaimed as his day in Huerfano County;
Benjamin Baker, United States Marine Corps veteran who won the Good Conduct Medal during his time serving with occupation forces in China and now honored with May 28, 2016 proclaimed as his day in Huerfano County, and;
Gladys Beatty, a four-year veteran of the US Navy, who was stationed in San Diego, California and was awarded the WWII Victory Medal will be honored locally with May 27, 2016 proclaimed by the county commissioners as her special day in Huerfano County.
