CPW is an enterprise agency – it receives just a tiny amount of general fund revenue – and relies on sportsmen and park users fees to provide funding for core agency programs. But it can’t raise fees without approval from the Legislature.
Since 2009, CPW has cut or defunded 50 positions and cut $40 million from its operating budget. Permanent park employees have been cut by 5 percent and the temporary parks workforce by 10 percent. Parks and wildlife managers caution that additional cuts are inevitable without an increase in revenue.
