Gabriel Garfield Gayton, 78, of Walsenburg died Monday, May 23, 2016.
Gabe was born on April 6, 1938 in Del Carbon, CO. to Benito and Rose Gayton. He attended Walsenburg High School, graduating in 1957. Gabe was a veteran of the US Army, serving from 1960 to 1963. Gabe was a licensed welder, methane certified, licensed handy man and a HVAC Journeyman. He had served as a City Administrator, Councilman and was on the Housing Board. Gabe began working for the City of Walsenburg on Nov. 16, 1965, and rose to the position of Gas Department Supervisor. He retired after 43 years of service on May 29, 2009.
Gabe had a love for baseball and was a Little League coach. His other interests were gardening, fishing, Denver Broncos, Colorado Rockies, and of course, Coors, but most of all he loved helping others. Preceded in death by his parents, Benito and Rose Gayton and his brother, Clovis Gayton, Gabe is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Lou, children, Carol (Joey) Pacheco, Dennis (Collette) Gayton of Colorado Springs, Ron (Karen) Gayton of Pueblo; grandchildren, Jordan Barela, Michael Barela, Danica Gayton; great grandchildren, Jayden Barela, Gabriel Barela; brothers, Arthur (Theresa) Gaytan, Jess “Chewy” (Ruth) Gayton, of Denver, sister, Rachael (Hank) Martinez of Kansas; numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Services will be held on Friday, May 27, 2016 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Walsenburg. Rosary, 1:00 PM and Mass at 1:30 PM. Burial, North St. Mary Cemetery with Military Ritual by the US Army and the Patriot Guard Riders.
