LAS ANIMAS, CO — Former Walsenburg resident Simona Gallegos was recently awarded the Allen M.A. Buckingham Senior Leadership Legacy Award. The award is granted in memory of Allen M.A. Buckinham, who served on the Colorado Commission on Aging and on the national AARP Board of Directors. He promoted the needs of the elderly and emphasized they should be able to live in dignity and with as much freedom and activity as possible.
Simona was born and raised in Walsenburg. She attended St. Mary School. She married J.B. Gallegos and moved to Las Animas, CO, where she had three children: Joe Tenorio, Sandra Tenorio, and Dale Tenorio. She has nine grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. She attended Trinidad State Junior College and Colorado State University at Fort Collins.
She volunteered on the Las Animas City Council for 12 years, the Las Animas school board for eight years, the Sunshine Manor board for 40 years, at the Senior Center for 40 years, Tri-County Housing for 15 years, the Sage Services board for 12 years, the Area Agency on Aging Board for 10 years, the RSVP board for 10 years, the Bent County Planning and Zoning for 20 years, and on the Inspiration Field Board for 20 years.
