Commissioners talk sales tax

by Larry Patrick

WALSENBURG- Depending on information the Huerfano County Commissioners receive, they may or may not ask for an entire 1 1/2% for handling dispatcher services. Administrator, John Galusha, told the County Commissioners that he is checking to see if jailers can also be used as dispatchers, thereby saving money from having to hire as many dispatchers if the county were to take over the dispatch system. If jailers could be used for dispatch, the County may consider only asking voters for a ½% or 1% general sales tax. Currently the dispatch system is being run by the City of Walsenburg. If a ballot issue to allow for a general sales tax were approved, the County would consider taking over the dispatch services from the City of Walsenburg. No action was taken until more information is gathered.

The Commissioners tabled a request from Debbie Reynolds of the Treasuer’s office to hire someone to take the place of an employee who retired. Reynolds says she has money left over in her budget.
