City crews respond to Main St. water leak

WALSENBURG — Walsenburg Water / Sewer utility crews worked a water main break at the intersection of Second and Main Streets this week after a leak was reported at about 3:30 am Monday.
City administrator David Johnston said utility personnel found a 14” crack on the side of the pipe and another approximate foot-long crack along the bottom of the pipe. The affected section was repaired and as of Tuesday, crews were checking one valve leak near the pipe. He said the city expected the fix and repair to the street to be completed by mid-week.
Some businesses, like Subway and Loaf and Jug, and residences on the east side of Main / Walsen were without water service for some time during the repair project.
Johnston told the Huerfano World Journal Monday afternoon that crews found a great deal of cement encasing the water pipe at Second and Main and digging through that material lengthened the overall time of the project’s completion.
A cone zone was in place Tuesday morning on southbound Main Street to protect workers from traffic as they completed repairs.
