Annual Free Fishing Weekend Colorado Parks and Wildlife is inviting resident and nonresident anglers of all ages to participate in its annual Free Fishing Weekend. CPW reminds you that although a license or Habitat Stamp is not required on Free Fishing Weekend, all other rules and regulations will apply.

WALSENBURG— The great class of 1981 is holding a reunion this summer on Friday, June 30 through Saturday July 1 in Walsenburg.   Coctails and COnversations will be from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Whistle Stop Lofts at 408 Russell Street.
On Saturday, come to a Hoedown BBQ at the Eagles, 614 Main featuring cocktails at 5 p.m., dinner at 6m and music and dancing from 7 p.m. on.   Wear western attire to enter a drawing for a prize.
Other activities for the weekend are now being organized, including bowling and potentially, a ‘Thanks For All The Memories’ tour of John Mall High School, which will be torn down next year, as well as a site visit of the new high school which will open next January.

Francisco Fort open

LA VETA— The Francisco Fort in La Veta is open for the season. Hours are 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. For more information on the Fort and summer events go to www.franciscofort.org  There is no admission fee and all events at the Fort this summer are free and open to the public.

Farmers Market Season is here

HUERFANO— It’s that time of year again! Get ready for a wonderful season filled with lots of local goodies grown, supplied, crafted and for purchase. La Veta will have their market every Thursday, 3-5 p.m. starting May 18th in the park next to the library on Main St. Cuchara will have their market on Fridays starting May 19, from 4 – 6 p.m. at the Cuchara Mountain Mercantile. Gardner will have their markets every Saturday, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. under the pavilion next to the Methodist church. Last but most certainly not least is Walsenburg’s market held every Sunday at Heritage Park on Main St. near the railroad tracks from 12 – 2 p.m. starting May 29. The Mobile Market in La Veta

LA VETA— The Care and Share Mobile Market truck will be in the La Veta Village assisted living residence parking lot at 109 E. Francisco Street on Friday, June 2 from 2 to 4 p.m. The Mobile Market provides no-cost groceries. Everyone in the community is welcome to shop at the market. Fun Family Walk-Run-Bike

WALSENBURG— This fun walk/run/bike is a great way to celebrate National Trails Day and Lathrop State Park Saturday, June 3rd, 9 – 11 a.m. The Cuerno Verde Trail is a 3 mile concrete trail that is wide and easy with no incline. This event is stroller – and wheelchair-friendly and suitable for all ages and abilities. We’d love you to join us! A park pass is required on all vehicles. Code Breakers Hike

WALSENBURG— On Sunday, June 4, 11 a.m. just for fun be a code breaker. Kids with their families can take a walk at Lathrop State Park, and find clues to decipher a coded message in an activity called Code Breakers Hike. Weekly wildflower & weed walks

LA VETA—  Spring wildflowers and plants are popping and it is time to learn what is what. These gentle one hours walks are led by professional interpretive naturalist Bob Kennemer. They will take place every Wednesday, now through fall, from 5 – 6 p.m. somewhere in Huerfano County, often right in or near our cities or towns. WALSENBURG— Please join us for a kick off celebration and conversation about the upcoming Museum on Mainstreet Exhibit on Thursday, June 8, 1 p.m. at MoF. Historic Preservation Committee Thank You Reception

LA VETA— The La Veta HPC is hosting a Thank You Reception for all town residents on Friday, June
9 from 4 – 7 p.m. at the La Veta Mercantile; refreshments will be provided! This Reception honors La Veta citizens’ commitment to the historic foundation of our town, and the economic resource that is our Historic District. There will be an awards ceremony to present three National Register plaques to building owners, historians and historic tax credit experts will be on hand, and several other local organizations will join us to discuss current good news projects taking place in La Veta.

Sangre de Cristo Pass Tour

WALSENBURG— The Huerfano County Historical Society is sponsoring a tour of the historic Sangre de Cristo Pass, also known as the Taos Trail, on Saturday, June 10th. This year the tour will follow in part the path of the 1853 Gunnison Expedition, builders of the first wagon road over the pass. We will also have stops at the pioneer settlement of St. Mary’s on the Huerfano River and at the Montoya homestead at Farasita, originally known as Fort Talpa. We will meet at the Walsenburg Mining Museum at 9 a.m. Bring water and lunch and allow 4-6 hours for the tour. Cost is $20 per person and $30 for families. HCHS members will receive a discount. TRINIDAD— Painter, sculptor and woodworker Hans Droog will show a collection of photographs, paintings and sculpture proposals at 221B Gallery on Thursday, June 1, from 5-8 p.m. This will be Droog’s first formal solo exhibition in Trinidad and the first time 221B has widely promoted an event to the public. 221B Gallery is located at 221 Nona Ave in Trinidad.

Wellness Garden Opening Celebration

TRINIDAD— We are excited to share that Sister Blandina Wellness Gardens will be reopening next month. Effective June 1, the location will be staffed Tuesday through Sunday, offering free Gardens admission for community members and visitors, apart from private and special events.

Friday Night Live at Trinidad Lake State Park

TRINIDAD— Every Friday Night beginning May 26th thru September 1st at 8 p.m. the park ranger/interpreter will present a program of interest to campers and the general public alike. Join us around the fire ring at the Trinidad Lake State Park amphitheater to get the latest in fishing activity, wildlife sightings and general information on hiking and biking in the area. The presentations will include an overview of the history and geology of the area and to make the most of your weekend outdoors. Apishapa Valley Heritage Center & Museum Opening Day

AGUILAR— The Apishapa Valley Heritage Center & Museum located at 132 E. Second annual “Echoes of History – Saving Trinidad’s Past”

TRINIDAD—  Echoes of History -Saving Trinidad’s Past produced by THPC, invites locals and guests to multiple sessions on Saturday, June 3, featuring Fox-West Theater’s lead architect, Gregory Friesen (CSNA) and East Street Culinary School’s architect, Paul Glenn (PTSM). Breakout sessions at Space to Create Commons demonstrate how to ‘Landmark’ an over 50 year-old property, rehabilitating The Wheeler Monument and meeting storytellers at many historic spaces. Trolley tours with guides at each site involve: Trinidad’s City Hall, Carnegie Library, Water Works, The Chappelle House, Fort Wootton Memorial Square and the “Santa Fe Style” Golf Course Club House designed by IH and WM Rapp in 1922.

There’s Something Fishy at TSLP

TRINIDAD— In recognition of Colorado Free Fishing Weekend June 3rd and 4th we are excited to welcome CPW aquatic biologist Carrie Tucker on Saturday, June 3, 7 p.m. at the Trinidad Lake State Park Amphitheater Have you ever been curious about the fish species in Trinidad Reservoir? Why certain species are present and others aren’t? Have you ever wondered what a CPW aquatic biologist does? Tucker will answer these and many other questions that just might lead to catching the “big one’” or just improvement in your overall fishing experience.

Full Moon Ride

TRINIDAD— The Trinidad Carnegie Public Library is excited to host a book signing for Melva Nolan on Friday, June 9, from 4 – 6 p.m., upstairs in the library’s main room. Melva is a dedicated quilter, and hosts her own blog, MelvaLovesScraps. She has written a new book, pieces from the Santa Fe Trail: The story of Marion Sloan Russell’s journey on the Santa Fe Trail and her life told through a quilt.

Open Mic for all Literary Souls

TRINIDAD— The Corazón de Trinidad Creative District Announces Second Saturdays – Open Mic for all Literary Souls is returning for 2023! The series is hosted by the Creative District on the Second Saturday of the month at The Commons Space to Create, 218 West Main St. Join us Saturday, June 10, 7 p.m. the evening will begin with a featured writer; the microphone then opens to all who would like to share their creative literary efforts. This event is free and open to the public.

Philosophy Café: Ethics of care

TRINIDAD— On the second Monday of every month, the library hosts a Philosophy Café. Join us Monday, June 12,  5 p.m. everyone is welcome to join in to a discussion based on a given topic. Street Closure – Moore’s Canyon Rd

TRINIDAD— Moore’s Canyon Road from Santa Fe Trail to Peak Street will be closed from June 12th to June 30th for a new gas line installation to add to infrastructure improvements throughout the City of Trinidad. Crews will be out starting June 5th to prep the road for construction and closure. Please slow down and pay attention, workers and flaggers will be on site and need your cooperation.

TRINIDAD— Santa Fe Trail Days is a well-loved festival of downtown Trinidad since 1982. It is back again, bigger and better than ever, with activities for both your family and friends. Santa Fe Trail Days will be held Saturday and Sunday, June 9th and 10th from 4 – 11 p.m.

Fort Wootton’s Southern Fish Fry

TRINIDAD— Join the Fort Wooton Veterans at Memorial Square, 204 S. Chestnut St, on Saturday, June 10, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m for their Fish Fry. Fresh Guly shrimp and fish will be served along with refreshments. Donations are encouraged and accepted. Veterans, First Responders and their families are always free. All donations directly support the operation and maintenance of Fort Wootoon Veterans’ Memorial Square.

Sloat Prince Foundation Scholarship for Colfax County graduates

COLFAX— The Sloat-Prince Foundation offers scholarships to graduates of Colfax County public or private high schools and to current Colfax County residents who may have graduated from high school elsewhere.  This includes public, private, charter, parochial or home school graduates.
To be considered for this scholarship, applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college/university, or a vocational, trade or business school.  New recipient applications, including official transcripts of all semesters, must be received by the foundation board on or before June 15, 2023.  Applications are now available by emailing umwaroy@bacavalley.com or by contacting your school’s administration or guidance counselor.

WALSENBURG— The May honorees that will be presented at the County Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, May 23, 10 a.m. are Elder, Dr. Bill Cluff and younger Ms. Willow Clark. There will be a reception at 11 a.m. at SPRHC for the many health care workers that have had the honor of working with Dr. Cluff. At 2 p.m. a community reception will be held at La Veta Village Assisted Living, 109 E. Francisco Street to honor both Dr. Cluff and Willow for their important contributions to our county. Weekly wildflower & weed walks

LA VETA—  Spring wildflowers and plants are popping and it is time to learn what is what. These gentle one hours walks are led by professional interpretive naturalist Bob Kennemer. They will take place every Wednesday, now through fall, from 5 – 6 p.m. somewhere in Huerfano County, often right in or near our cities or towns. Puentas: Respecting the Past Bridges to the Future

HUERFANO—  A gala event that has been months in the planning is happening Memorial Day weekend in Huerfano County! The inaugural sharing of a Pictorial Archive of 25 Founding Hispano Families will debut in La Veta on Saturday, May 27,  from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the La Veta Community Center  with a few specially invited vendors. Guest speakers will be at the La Veta Library starting at 10:30 a.m. with noted author and
historian, Virginia Sanchez; noon; Norberto Valdez, PhD, retired Ethnic Studies professor addressing the
concept of Querencia (the place from which one draws their strength). At 2 p.m. much respected journalist from PBS, Kate Perdoni, will share her reverence for people and place in southern Colorado.
On Sunday, May 28th all events move to the Huerfano County Community Center, 928 Russell Aven Walsenburg from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. A free buffet, entertainment, Biscochito Contest and select vendors will accompany the impressive Pictorial Archive display (more than 18 foot of photos)! Trinidad Water Festival

TRINIDAD— Every May, children from
all over Las Animas, Huerfano, and Colfax counties gather at the Trinidad State College campus for a day of educational, engaging, and energizing activities focused on water. Agua es Vida (water is life) continues to be the motto for the festival. This year’s Trinidad Water Festival is scheduled for Thursday, May 18, on the Trinidad State College campus. Abstract Art Show
This is a show to encourage your imagination, and involvement and to provide a viewer with an emotional experience that is completely different for each person, depending on their personality and mood. There are no rules in abstract art. It should just be made up of color, shape, form, texture, and value and does not tell a story. For our show there is only one rule and that pertains to the size of the artwork. Our gallery has limited space so the size rule is so we can accommodate a lot of imaginative pieces to show. Maximum size will be 30 x 30 inches.
Entry fee is $10 per piece or $25 for 3 pieces. Cash prizes will be awarded. Art take in will be May 27, 28, 29, and 30 from 11:00 to 4:00 at the Corazon Gallery, 149 East Main St, Trinidad, Colorado.
The opening reception will be during the First Friday Art Walk on June 2nd at the Corazon Gallery. Cash prizes of $100, $75, and $50 will be awarded

Go Baby Go!

TRINIDAD—  Children’s Services at SCDDS will be hosting their first Go Baby Go! event on Saturday, May 20, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. ! Build teams will assemble and customize two ride-on motorized cars designed to give increased mobility to toddlers with developmental disabilities or delays. Children’s Services Department at Southern Colorado Developmental Disabilities is hosting the adaptive car building and outreach event at their office in Trinidad, 415 S. Indiana Ave.  Two toddlers from Huerfano & Las Animas counties will receive a car to support their development! A community outreach event titled, ‘Things That Go!’ will be hosted in conjunction with the Go Baby Go! workshop. This event will be open to children and families in the surrounding area and include transportation themed activities.

Trail Project at Capulin Volcano National Monument

RATON— Join us for a two-day project at Capulin Volcano National Monument (near Raton). The volunteer work is slated for Saturday and Sunday, May 27-28, and will include overnight camping within the park.  All meals, tools and training will be provided.  NMVFO will improve two trails: the Boca Trail (a two-mile loop) and the Lava Flow Trail (a one-mile loop). Work includes lopping, moving rocks, and widening trail in some sections. COLFAX— The Sloat-Prince Foundation offers scholarships to graduates of Colfax County public or private high schools and to current Colfax County residents who may have graduated from high school elsewhere.  This includes public, private, charter, parochial or home school graduates.

HUERFANO — Continuing a tradition that first began in 1993, the 31st annual letter carriers’ stamp out Hunger Food Drive will be Saturday, May 13.
“Millions of children and families living in America face hunger and food insecurity every day,” said Jeff Frey, Colorado Food Drive Coordinator.
You can contribute to the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive by putting non-perishable food items in a bag by your mailbox.  The Walsenburg Post Office will gather all donations and donate them to Dorcas Circle Food & Clothing Pantry, located at  911 S. Main in Walsenburg.

Artists were encouraged to share artwork that challenges the viewer with the unexpected. Over 60 pieces of artwork include traditional, abstract, expressionistic, and unique styles in a variety of media.
Additionally, nationally acclaimed artist Albert Anderson Clymer is showing a collection of energetic new paintings in the east gallery. There is no admission fee, but donations are gratefully appreciated. Refreshments will be provided. The SPACe Gallery is located at 132 W. Ryus, in the La Veta Town Park. TRINIDAD— Every May, children from all over Las Animas, Huerfano, and Colfax counties gather at the Trinidad State College campus for a day of educational, engaging, and energizing activities focused on water. Agua es Vida (water is life) continues to be the motto for the festival. This year’s Trinidad Water Festival is scheduled for Thursday, May 18, on the Trinidad State College campus. Go Baby Go!

TRINIDAD—  Children’s Services at SCDDS will be hosting their first Go Baby Go! event on Saturday, May 20, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. ! Build teams will assemble and customize two ride-on motorized cars designed to give increased mobility to toddlers with developmental disabilities or delays. Children’s Services Department at Southern Colorado Developmental Disabilities is hosting the adaptive car building and outreach event at their office in Trinidad, 415 S. Indiana Ave.  Two toddlers from Huerfano & Las Animas counties will receive a car to support their development! A community outreach event titled, ‘Things That Go!’ will be hosted in conjunction with the Go Baby Go! workshop. This event will be open to children and families in the surrounding area and include transportation themed activities.

29th Children’s Fishing Derby

Trail Project at Capulin Volcano National Monument

RATON— Join us for a two-day project at Capulin Volcano National Monument (near Raton). The volunteer work is slated for Saturday and Sunday, May 27-28, and will include overnight camping within the park.  All meals, tools and training will be provided.  NMVFO will improve two trails: the Boca Trail (a two-mile loop) and the Lava Flow Trail (a one-mile loop). Work includes lopping, moving rocks, and widening trail in some sections. Sloat Prince Foundation Scholarship for Colfax County graduates

COLFAX— The Sloat-Prince Foundation offers scholarships to graduates of Colfax County public or private high schools and to current Colfax County residents who may have graduated from high school elsewhere.  This includes public, private, charter, parochial or home school graduates.

To be considered for this scholarship, applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college/university, or a vocational, trade or business school.  New recipient applications, including official transcripts of all semesters, must be received by the foundation board on or before June 15, 2023.  Applications are now available by emailing umwaroy@bacavalley.com or by contacting your school’s administration or guidance counselor.

OUR WORLD— The Junior Colorado Cattlemen’s Association is offering two scholarships for students interested in careers in agriculture.

The Grace & Oley Kohlman Scholarship (named for CCA past-president, Oley Kohlman, and his wife Grace who were instrumental in the development of JCCA and the scholarship program) is open to all current JCCA members. 33rd Annual Family Health Fair

COLFAX—  Individuals of all ages from Colfax County, the surrounding area and beyond are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to obtain important health screenings and information from exhibitors at the 33rd Annual Family Health Fair. This year’s event will be held Thursday, April 27, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., at the Raton Convention Center, located at 901 South Third Street. Numerous free and reduced-fee health screenings can be found throughout the convention center along with information from over 40 educational exhibitors and professionals who will have information on a wide variety of health topics. Appointments are not needed for the screenings, but will be taken on a first come, first serve basis.

Dance Party

RATON— Youth Heartline’ presents Show your blue dance party on Saturday, April 29, 6 p.m. at the Raton Convention Center. This is a free event, open to all ages with raffle and door prizes. There will also be food, drinks, games, face painting and a photobooth!

RATON— Thinking about getting into hunting? Come hang out at the WesternHuntFest and enjoy 3D archery, Elk calling contest, pack out challenge, elk calling seminar and more on Saturday April 29 and Sunday, April 30 from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. You do not have to participate to attend this event at the NRA Whittington Center in Raton. Sloat Prince Foundation Scholarship for Colfax County graduates

COLFAX— The Sloat-Prince Foundation offers scholarships to graduates of Colfax County public or private high schools and to current Colfax County residents who may have graduated from high school elsewhere.  This includes public, private, charter, parochial or home school graduates.  To be considered for this scholarship, applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college/university, or a vocational, trade or business school.  New recipient applications, including official transcripts of all semesters, must be received by the Foundation Board on or before June 15, 2023.  Applications are now available by emailing umwaroy@bacavalley.com or by contacting your school’s administration or guidance counselor.

Clean-up Events:
Thursday, April 20, 2020: La Veta Trails Earth Day Spring Clean-up Day: Meet the group for litter pick up at the Recycling Bins on East Ryus at 9:00am.

Friday, April 21, 2023: Brush burn pile open -for town of La Veta residents only, no commercial business will be allowed to bring brush to the burn pile- Open (weather permitting) from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m The burn pile will be available for branches, limbs, leaves and yard waste. No tree stumps larger than 4” in diameter will be allowed. No construction material, this includes pallets, doors, or anything from a construction site.

Saturday, April 22, 2023: Town of La Veta Clean Up Day – For town of La Veta residents only, no commercial business will be allowed to bring trash, even if you cleaned it up for a La Veta resident: Open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (weather permitting). Dumpsters will be located at the north side of the recycling center bins. For a fee, disposal permitted for: tires, TV’s, electronics, lawnmowers with the oil drained.
No refrigerators or freezers, no paint, liquids, oils or chemicals will be accepted. Washers and dryers will be accepted. No household trash allowed. For more info call La Veta Town Hall at 719-743-3631.

Earth Day and Beaver Day

WALSENBURG— Get started at the River Front in Walsenburg on Friday, April 21, from 10 – 12:30 p.m.  We will be De-Trashing the stream and having a biologist speak on the local beavers that recently moved into the area and their importance to our ecosystem and impact on biodiversity.
In addition to picking up trash, and the informative talk, we are also offering free food from Gub Gub’s Pizza and Ice Cream to all attendees. The event will take place on the River Walk near the South Bridge, across from the Anchor Motel, from 10  to 12:30 p.m.

SPLD Presents Storytime with Mrs. Flamingo

WALSENBURG— Join the Spanish Peaks Library District in Walsenburg every Friday from 10:30-11:30 a.m.  Join our Children’s Librarian, Mrs Flamingo as she reads a story and participate in a craft related to the story!  Don’t miss this fun and creative program to share with your kids! Barefoot in the Park by FCPA

LA VETA— Francisco Center for the Performing Arts proudly present “Barefoot in the Park”, a play by Neil Simon. Paul and Corie Bratter are newlyweds in every sense of the word. After a six day honeymoon, they get a surprise visit from Corie’s loopy mother and decide to play matchmaker during a dinner with their neighbor-in-the-attic Velasco, where everything that can go wrong does. Our annual Earth Day Event pays tribute to volunteer Jon Sudar, who served at Lathrop State Park after retiring as a park ranger in the Grand Canyon.  His work helped build our history, geocache, and natural resource programs until his passing on Earth Day in 2015.

HUERFANO— The collaborative project between Huajatolla Heritage Foundation and the Huerfano County Board of County Commissioners is pleased to announce the two April honorees in our yearlong project of honoring the often-unrecognized citizens that have made a difference in our communities. Our elder to be honored will be Juanita Maes of Red Wing (who is celebrating her 100 th birthday on April 20 th ) and our “younger” will be Antonia Martinez of Walsenburg. LA VETA—  Spring wildflowers and plants are popping and it is time to learn what is what. These gentle one hours walks are led by professional interpretive naturalist Bob Kennemer.
