HUERFANO/LAS ANIMAS— Some years past, with great delight, the wise leaders of the Outlands created a summer festival called Battlemoor, in the cool mountains where all could find rest and friendly competition. Alliances are strengthened, hospitality is joyfully returned, and feasts and revels abound. Battlemoor has become the gathering place for the all the widespread peoples of the region to meet old friends and new, to exhibit valor, and to have fun in a myriad of ways. It’s the Return of Battlemoor at a brand new site, join us at the foot of the beautiful Spanish Peaks in southern Colorado.

RSVP now for the John Mall High School Class of 1981 Reunion, and get a tour of the new high school building

WALSENBURG— The great class of 1981 is holding a reunion this summer on Friday, June 30 through Saturday July 1 in Walsenburg.   Cocktails and Conversations will be from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Whistle Stop Lofts at 408 Russell Street.
On Saturday, come to a Hoedown BBQ at the Eagles, 614 Main featuring cocktails at 5 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m. and music and dancing from 7 p.m. on.   Wear western attire to enter a drawing for a prize.
Other activities for the weekend are now being organized, including bowling and potentially, a ‘Thanks For All The Memories’ tour of John Mall High School, which will be torn down next year, as well as a site visit of the new high school which will open next January.

Francisco Fort open

LA VETA— The Francisco Fort in La Veta is open for the season. Hours are 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. For more information on the Fort and summer events go to www.franciscofort.org  There is no admission fee and all events at the Fort this summer are free and open to the public.

Fridays For Fun:  Art for the Young Human Being

LA VETA—The La Veta School of the Arts is pleased to announce that Sharona Whitley, artist and educator, will teach a class to Make a Magic Bubble Wand. Students will thread beads, washers, and other objects onto wire to create their own wand. Sharona makes this class quite an adventure, to match the fun you will have using your wand. Farmers market schedule

HUERFANO— It’s that time of year again! Get ready for a wonderful season filled with lots of local goodies grown, supplied, crafted and for purchase. La Veta will have their market every Thursday, 3-5 p.m. starting May 18th in the park next to the library on Main St. Cuchara will have their market on Fridays starting May 19, from 4 – 6 p.m. at the Cuchara Mountain Mercantile. Gardner will have their markets every Saturday, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. under the pavilion next to the Methodist church. Last but most certainly not least is Walsenburg’s market held every Sunday at Heritage Park on Main St. near the railroad tracks from 12 – 2 p.m. starting May 29. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

HUERFANO— Thursday, June 15 is World Abuse Awareness Day. The Huerfano County Department of Human Services Adult Protection team asks that you wear purple on Tuesday, June 15 in support of this day.

WALSENBURG— Join the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg on Thursday, June 15th and Friday, June 16th from 10 – 3 p.m.  Come check out our awesome collection of donated books for sale at low prices!  Proceeds help the Friends support our library.

Weekend fun at Lathrop State Park 

WALSENBURG— On Friday, June 16, 11:30 a.m. Hey, kids let’s do something just for fun and make some constellation cards. Meet at the Martin’s lake swim beach area. Later friday evening, come listen to Tuco Tavera’s rockabilly sounds and songs of the 6o’s. The fun begins at 7 p.m. in the park amphitheater.
Saturday, June 17 meet at 1 p.m. in the amphitheater for a Junior Ranger Activity on the topic of trees. Later Saturday at 7 p.m., CPW aquatic biologist Carrie Tucker will be talking about fisheries management at Lathrop State Park and can answer your fish-related questions! She will talk about what fish species are stocked in each lake and why, provide information about nearby reservoirs, and discuss proper fish handling (for kids), and fish ecology. This event is at the Amphitheater.
Sunday June, 18, 8 p.m. “Stories in the Stars” with Reed. Learn to identify constellations in our night skys. Hear a story from Greek mythology and see what constellations you can identify. This event will be held at the Amphitheater.
Lathrop State Park is located at 70 CR 502 off HWY 160. A park pass is required to enter the park and can be purchased at the entrance.

Fox Rocks the Block

Cornhole for Relay for Life

WALSENBURG— Huerfano Cornhole is hosting a fundraising game for Relay for life on Saturday, June 17, check-in is at 10 a.m. at the Huerfano County Community Center in Walsenburg. Register on the Scoreholio app or in person. There will be concessions for purchase, raffles, mystery bags, and knockout competition too.

Annual Western Rendezvous Art Show

LA VETA— Everyone is invited to the reception this Saturday, June 17, 5 – 7 p.m. for the annual Western Rendezvous show at the SPACe Gallery in La Veta. Awards will be presented to the winners in this juried and judged show. 1st Place: Rudl R. Mergleman of Florence; 2nd Place: Joe Horvath of Monte Vista; 3rd Place: Tom Lockhart of Canon City; and Merit Award: Brenda Gomez of Pueblo. Refreshments will be provided and there is no admission fee, however, donations are gratefully accepted. The SPACe Gallery, 132 W. Ryus, is operated by the Spanish Peaks Arts Council, a nonprofit organization.

Junior Golf Camp

Experimental Drawing and Painting at LVSA

LA VETA— LVSA presents Peggy Zehring’s fun, abstract, experimental drawing and painting one week or two week class which will be happening at The La Veta School of the Arts in La Veta, from Monday, June 19 through Friday, June 23, and Monday, June 26 through Friday, June 30. Draw with charcoal and then use the images you created spontaneously to unfold abstract paintings. You’ll learn to make your work personal and original. Movie on the Mountain

CUCHARA— Bachman & Associates Presents Movie on the Mountain at the Cuchara Mountain Park for the 2nd year on Friday, June 23. This event is FREE to the public so bring your friends and family to enjoy a night under the stars while you watch a movie on the big screen. Fiber and Craft Festival

LA VETA— The much-loved Fiber and Craft Festival will be held in La Veta Saturday June 24 th from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. After scrambling several years in a row with inclement weather, we decided this year we will just plan everything indoors. It we have a beautiful Saturday; some Vendors may set up outside. Our indoor venues include La Veta Community Center (131 E. Ryus Ave.), La Veta Mercantile (300 S. Main) “the old title building” (225 S. Main) and the Capps Building at Francisco Fort Museum (306 S. WHS Class of 1983 40th Reunion

WALSENBURG— The Walsenburg High School Class of 1983 will be having their 40th class reunion the weekend of June 23rd and 24th.
On Friday, June 23, 6:30 p.m. we’ll be having pizza and drinks at Silver Dollar. On Saturday, June 24 we’ll meet at the highschool at 1 p.m. for a school tour and bus ride around town. Mud Bogs in La Veta

LA VETA— Come one, come all to the 20th anniversary of the La Veta Mud Bog, Saturday, July 1, in La Veta at the Fairgrounds. The spectator gate opens at 8am. Adults to 14 years of age $10, 5-13 years old

First Chair Festival

CUCHARA— The First Chair Festival is on Saturday, July 1, 4 to 9 p.m. Join us at the Cuchara Mountain Mercantile for an evening of music, food, drinks, a silent auction, and more to raise money for Cuchara Mountain Park. 3 Bands with the Taylor Scott Band headlining and bringing their colorful hybrid of roots-rock, funk, soul, and troubadour-style Americana to Cuchara. Summer Reading Program – All Together Now

TRINIDAD— Join us this summer for our 2023 Summer Reading Program! We will have special guest readers, celebrate our community make some crafts, earn prizes and explore new worlds and adventures with a new book. The summer reading program is for ages 0-17. Street Closure – Moore’s Canyon Rd

TRINIDAD— Moore’s Canyon Road from Santa Fe Trail to Peak Street will be closed from June 12th to June 30th for a new gas line installation to add to infrastructure improvements throughout the City of Trinidad. Crews will be out starting June 5th to prep the road for construction and closure. Please slow down and pay attention, workers and flaggers will be on site and need your cooperation.

Kids Purgatoire Fish, Films & River Play Day

TRINIDAD— Join us Thursday, June 15, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. for the 2023 Kids Purgatoire Fish, Films & River Play Day where we will be learning about local fish biology and ecology, watching a cool educational fish film, and heading to the river to release young rainbow trout into their new home while getting to enjoy some water play time in the river! Plus free pizza lunch in between!
This is a free event! Wear your river play clothes and prepare to get wet!

We’ll kick off the day with a super cool film about fish and fishing! All attendees get free kids snack pack with drink and popcorn. Friday Night Live at Trinidad Lake State Park

TRINIDAD— Every Friday Night beginning May 26th thru September 1st at 8 p.m. the park ranger/interpreter will present a program of interest to campers and the general public alike. Join us around the fire ring at the Trinidad Lake State Park amphitheater to get the latest in fishing activity, wildlife sightings and general information on hiking and biking in the area. The presentations will include an overview of the history and geology of the area and to make the most of your weekend outdoors. We provide the fire so bring your marshmallows for a fun evening under the stars.

Community Celebration at Sister Blandina Wellness Gardens

TRINIDAD— Sister Blandina Wellness Gardens is holding its rescheduled Community Celebration this Thursday, June 15, from 4:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. The Community Celebration was originally scheduled on June 2, but was postponed due to inclement weather. The event celebrates the public reopening of the Gardens earlier this month. Effective June 1, 2023, Sister Blandina Wellness Gardens is staffed Tuesday through Sunday, offering free Gardens admission for community members and visitors, apart from private and special events.

Pony Xpress  Gravel 160

The Goathead Festival

TRINIDAD— Join us on Saturday, June 17, 8 a.m. at the Dog Park, 200 N. Linden Ave to pull goatheads. Then come back to Sexy Pizza 8 p.m. for a bonfire celebration. All volunteers get a slice of pizza and drink for their hardwork. There will be also games, prizes and local vendors!

5th Annual Make Art Fair

TRINIDAD— On Saturday, June 17, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Join the Art Council of Trinidad Presents for their 5th Annual Art Fair at the Trinidad History Museum. Rain or Shine, we’re ready for this year’s art fair! There will be 9 art projects available to participate in, supplies and instruction provided! All are welcome, all ages, all free.

Poetry Workshop

TRINIDAD— Saturday, June 17, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. State Historian Jared Orsi and Poet Jodie Hollander will be visiting the Trinidad History Museum to lead a 3-hour creative writing workshop inspired by the history and natural landscape and setting of the place. This workshop will begin with a tour of our Children of Ludlow exhibit in the Bloom Mansion, where Jared will provide some introductory historical context and lead a discussion with participants in responses to the exhibit. Jodie will then lead a brief poetry lesson and offer participants time to write and share their poetry.

Youth Benefit Event

TRINIDAD— Join the Las Animas County Republicans for their youth benefit event on Saturday, June 17, 4 – 9 p.m. at Fishers Peak RV Park. There will be a live band, pig roast, beer garden, games and a silent auction. Tickets are $10 and kids are free. 100% of the proceeds go to Las Animas County Livestock Auction.

History of the Santa Fe Trail through the eyes of an artist

TRINIDAD—  Saturday June 17, 7 p.m.  Doug has exhibited his work internationally, he’s been an educator, a television art director and an historical illustrator. A number of his paintings are part of the permanent collection on display at the National Santa Fe Trail Center in Larned, Kansas and the National Park Service has used his work in exhibits all along the Trail, from Missouri to New Mexico. Recently several of his paintings were selected to be exhibited at the Colorado State Capitol. Doug served as chairman of the Art Department at Trinidad State Junior College before his retirement in 2013. We are excited to welcome Doug and his wife Lori, an artist in her own right, as our guests at the lake’s amphitheater to share his images and insights into the rich history of the Santa Fe Trail.

109th Annual Ludlow Memorial Service

LUDLOW— We are preparing to hold the Annual Ludlow service this year. The service will be held on Sunday, June 25, 10 a.m. ar the Ludlow Memorial Site. We are happy to announce our speakers for this years service. Our Keynote Speaker will be UMWA Internation Sect-Treas Brian Sanson. Also, UMWA D.-22 Internation V.P. Mike Dalpiaz and Executive Director of the Colorado AFL-CIO Dennis Dougherty will also be speaking. There will be BBQ to follow the ceremony. In memory of the men, women and children who lost their lives in freedom’s cause at Ludlow on April 20, 1914.

Capulin Volcano Ladybug Festival

CAPULIN— Friday, June 16 and Saturday, June 17, starting at 8 a.m. Each year we have thousands of lovely Convergent Lady beetles visit our Volcano as part of their migratory journey due to our abundance of plants and insects the lady beetles can consume. The eggs laid here will hatch later in the summer, overwinter, and then the next generation will make their way further south. Come join us at Capulin Volcano to celebrate their return! Two days full of fun lady beetle facts, facepainting, prizes, and chances to explore the beauty of Capulin Volcano.

CAPULIN— Saturday, June 17, 8:30 p.m. join us at Capulin Volcano National Monument. Follow the red lights from the Visitor Center to the observing area. It can get chilly so please wear warm clothing.

Angel Fire Balloon festival and street fair

ANGEL FIRE— We are closing down Bill Burgess Blvd a.k.a. North Angel Fire Rd. to have a street fair on Saturday, June 17, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.   After you enjoy the mass ascension of over 30 hot air balloons at Balloons Over Angel Fire, join us for Food, Fun, Arts & Crafts, Music, Mimosas & More! Summer Carnival

RATON— Join the fun at the annual Carnival in Raton, Friday, June 22 – Sunday, June 25 at the Raton High School. Tickets are $25 in advance and can be purchased at In Bank in Raton and Trinidad. Tickets at the door are $35.

Sloat Prince Foundation Scholarship for Colfax County graduates

COLFAX— The Sloat-Prince Foundation offers scholarships to graduates of Colfax County public or private high schools and to current Colfax County residents who may have graduated from high school elsewhere.  This includes public, private, charter, parochial or home school graduates.
To be considered for this scholarship, applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college/university, or a vocational, trade or business school.  New recipient applications, including official transcripts of all semesters, must be received by the foundation board on or before June 15, 2023.  Applications are now available by emailing umwaroy@bacavalley.com or by contacting your school’s administration or guidance counselor.

Farmers market season is here

HUERFANO— It’s that time of year again! Get ready for a wonderful season filled with lots of local goodies grown, supplied, crafted and for purchase. La Veta will have their market every Thursday, 3-5 p.m. starting May 18th in the park next to the library on Main St. Cuchara will have their market on Fridays starting May 19, from 4 – 6 p.m. at the Cuchara Mountain Mercantile. Gardner will have their markets every Saturday, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. under the pavilion next to the Methodist church. Last but most certainly not least is Walsenburg’s market held every Sunday at Heritage Park on Main St. near the railroad tracks from 12 – 2 p.m. starting May 29. Western Rendezvous Art Show

LA VETA— Artists working in all media are encouraged to enter the upcoming Western Rendezvous show at the SPACe Gallery in La Veta. Original art will be accepted today, Thursday, June 8, Friday, June 9, and Saturday, June 10 at the gallery, 132 W. Sangre de Cristo Pass Tour

WALSENBURG— The Huerfano County Historical Society is sponsoring a tour of the historic Sangre de Cristo Pass, also known as the Taos Trail, on Saturday, June 10th. This year the tour will follow in part the path of the 1853 Gunnison Expedition, builders of the first wagon road over the pass. We will also have stops at the pioneer settlement of St. Mary’s on the Huerfano River and at the Montoya homestead at Farasita, originally known as Fort Talpa. We will meet at the Walsenburg Mining Museum at 9 a.m. Bring water and lunch and allow 4-6 hours for the tour. Cost is $20 per person and $30 for families. Wildlife Photography

TRINIDAD— Saturday, June 10, 7 p.m.   Join us at the Park Visitor Center for a conversation with wildlife photographer Mike Rearden as he shares his passion for wildlife and photography. Mike came to Colorado from Wales in 1994 and only recently moved to the Trinidad area where in a very short time has developed a large following for his wildlife photos. Street Closure – Moore’s Canyon Rd

TRINIDAD— Moore’s Canyon Road from Santa Fe Trail to Peak Street will be closed from June 12th to June 30th for a new gas line installation to add to infrastructure improvements throughout the City of Trinidad. Poetry Workshop

TRINIDAD— Saturday, June 17, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. State Historian Jared Orsi and Poet Jodie Hollander will be visiting the Trinidad History Museum to lead a 3-hour creative writing workshop inspired by the history and natural landscape and setting of the place. This workshop will begin with a tour of our Children of Ludlow exhibit in the Bloom Mansion, where Jared will provide some introductory historical context and lead a discussion with participants in responses to the exhibit. Jodie will then lead a brief poetry lesson and offer participants time to write and share their poetry.

COLFAX— The Sloat-Prince Foundation offers scholarships to graduates of Colfax County public or private high schools and to current Colfax County residents who may have graduated from high school elsewhere.  This includes public, private, charter, parochial or home school graduates.

Sangre de Cristo Pass Tour

WALSENBURG— The Huerfano County Historical Society is sponsoring a tour of the historic Sangre de Cristo Pass, also known as the Taos Trail, on Saturday, June 10th. This year the tour will follow in part the path of the 1853 Gunnison Expedition, builders of the first wagon road over the pass. We will also have stops at the pioneer settlement of St. Mary’s on the Huerfano River and at the Montoya homestead at Farasita, originally known as Fort Talpa. We will meet at the Walsenburg Mining Museum at 9 a.m. Bring water and lunch and allow 4-6 hours for the tour. Cost is $20 per person and $30 for families. HCHS members will receive a discount. Street Closure – Moore’s Canyon Rd

TRINIDAD— Moore’s Canyon Road from Santa Fe Trail to Peak Street will be closed from June 12th to June 30th for a new gas line installation to add to infrastructure improvements throughout the City of Trinidad. Sloat Prince Foundation Scholarship for Colfax County graduates

COLFAX— The Sloat-Prince Foundation offers scholarships to graduates of Colfax County public or private high schools and to current Colfax County residents who may have graduated from high school elsewhere.  This includes public, private, charter, parochial or home school graduates.
To be considered for this scholarship, applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college/university, or a vocational, trade or business school.  New recipient applications, including official transcripts of all semesters, must be received by the foundation board on or before June 15, 2023.  Applications are now available by emailing umwaroy@bacavalley.com or by contacting your school’s administration or guidance counselor.

Puentas: Respecting the Past Bridges to the Future

HUERFANO—  A gala event that has been months in the planning is happening Memorial Day weekend in Huerfano County! The inaugural sharing of a Pictorial Archive of 25 Founding Hispano Families will debut in La Veta on Saturday, May 27,  from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the La Veta Community Center  with a few specially invited vendors. Guest speakers will be at the La Veta Library starting at 10:30 a.m. with noted author and
historian, Virginia Sanchez; noon; Norberto Valdez, PhD, retired Ethnic Studies professor addressing the
concept of Querencia (the place from which one draws their strength). At 2 p.m. much respected journalist from PBS, Kate Perdoni, will share her reverence for people and place in southern Colorado.
On Sunday, May 28th all events move to the Huerfano County Community Center, 928 Russell Aven Walsenburg from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. A free buffet, entertainment, Biscochito Contest and select vendors will accompany the impressive Pictorial Archive display (more than 18 foot of photos)! Memorial Day Weekend activities at Lathrop State Park

WALSENBURG— On Saturday, May 27, 7 p.m. Wildlife Officer Bob Holder returns to Lathrop to present his popular program on bears (and other Colorado wildlife). Ever the crowd pleaser, Holder’s presentation is highly educational and entertaining. The program will be at the Piñon Campground Amphitheater.
On Sunday, May 28 at 10 a.m. families can have fun taking part in a Wetland Hike. Participants will take a short hike along the trail and use an Explorer’s guide and the Merlin app to make bird discoveries along the way. The activity will at the Wetlands Walk Parking area. American Legion Post 16 Meeting

HUERFANO— Post 16 of The American Legion will have a public Celebration Meeting at the Huerfano Community Center, 928 Russell Street, Walsenburg on Tuesday, May 30, 3 p.m. National American Legion Officers from Indiana will present the Post with their new Charter, designating the Post as “Brian T. Chiquette Post 16 of The American Legion”, named after La Veta resident and Vietnam War hero Brian Chiquette. Brian rose from an orphanage in Los Angeles, CA to serving 4 tours of duty in Vietnam, to a resident of La Veta, working at the Spanish Peaks Hospital.  He received various medals as a result of his Service in Vietnam, including 4 Purple Hearts. In 2022, Brian succumbed to injuries as a result of Agent Orange exposure and the Post Membership thought it a befitting tribute to name the Post in his namesake. Light refreshments will be served. All Veterans and the Public are invited and encouraged to attend. This is a one-time event that will shape Post 16’s posture for the years to come. Fun Family Walk-Run-Bike to Celebrate National Trails Day

WALSENBURG— This fun walk/run/bike is a great way to celebrate National Trails Day and Lathrop State Park Saturday, June 3rd, 9 – 11 a.m. The Cuerno Verde Trail is a 3 mile concrete trail that is wide and easy with no incline. This event is stroller – and wheelchair-friendly and suitable for all ages and abilities. We’d love you to join us! A park pass is required on all vehicles. Abstract Art Show

TRINIDAD— This is a show to encourage your imagination, and involvement and to provide a viewer with an emotional experience that is completely different for each person, depending on their personality and mood. There are no rules in abstract art. It should just be made up of color, shape, form, texture, and value and does not tell a story. For our show there is only one rule and that pertains to the size of the artwork. Our gallery has limited space so the size rule is so we can accommodate a lot of imaginative pieces to show. Maximum size will be 30 x 30 inches.
Entry fee is $10 per piece or $25 for 3 pieces. Cash prizes will be awarded. Art take in will be May 27, 28, 29, and 30 from 11:00 to 4:00 at the Corazon Gallery, 149 East Main St, Trinidad, Colorado. The opening reception will be during the First Friday Art Walk on June 2nd at the Corazon Gallery. Cash prizes of $100, $75, and $50 will be awarded.

Friday Night Live at Trinidad Lake State Park

TRINIDAD— Every Friday Night begining May 26th thru September 1st at 8 p.m. the park ranger/interpreter will present a program of interest to campers and the general public alike. Full Moon hike at Capulin Volcano

CAPULIN— Take a ranger guided hike at Capulin Volcano under the full or nearly full moon on Saturday, May 27, 8 p.m. Subjects include night time biology, lunar geography, astronomy, and the park after dark. Trail Project at Capulin Volcano National Monument

RATON— Join us for a two-day project at Capulin Volcano National Monument (near Raton). The volunteer work is slated for Saturday and Sunday, May 27-28, and will include overnight camping within the park.  All meals, tools and training will be provided.  NMVFO will improve two trails: the Boca Trail (a two-mile loop) and the Lava Flow Trail (a one-mile loop). Work includes lopping, moving rocks, and widening trail in some sections. Sloat Prince Foundation Scholarship for Colfax County graduates

COLFAX— The Sloat-Prince Foundation offers scholarships to graduates of Colfax County public or private high schools and to current Colfax County residents who may have graduated from high school elsewhere.  This includes public, private, charter, parochial or home school graduates.

To be considered for this scholarship, applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college/university, or a vocational, trade or business school.  New recipient applications, including official transcripts of all semesters, must be received by the foundation board on or before June 15, 2023.  Applications are now available by emailing umwaroy@bacavalley.com or by contacting your school’s administration or guidance counselor.

WALSENBURG— The May honorees that will be presented at the County Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, May 23, 10 a.m. are Elder, Dr. Bill Cluff and younger Ms. Willow Clark. There will be a reception at 11 a.m. at SPRHC for the many health care workers that have had the honor of working with Dr. Cluff. At 2 p.m. a community reception will be held at La Veta Village Assisted Living, 109 E. Francisco Street to honor both Dr. Cluff and Willow for their important contributions to our county. The inaugural sharing of a Pictorial Archive of 25 Founding Hispano Families will debut in La Veta on Saturday, May 27,  from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the La Veta Community Center  with a few specially invited vendors. Guest speakers will be at the La Veta Library starting at 10:30 a.m. with noted author and
historian, Virginia Sanchez; noon; Norberto Valdez, PhD, retired Ethnic Studies professor addressing the
concept of Querencia (the place from which one draws their strength). At 2 p.m. much respected journalist from PBS, Kate Perdoni, will share her reverence for people and place in southern Colorado.

Trinidad Water Festival

TRINIDAD— Every May, children from
all over Las Animas, Huerfano, and Colfax counties gather at the Trinidad State College campus for a day of educational, engaging, and energizing activities focused on water. Agua es Vida (water is life) continues to be the motto for the festival. This year’s Trinidad Water Festival is scheduled for Thursday, May 18, on the Trinidad State College campus. An opening ceremony kicks things off at 8:30 a.m. with presentations running from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Anyone interested in participating in the festival, either as a school or presenter, please contact us at tomandlindaperry@gmail.com.

Abstract Art Show
This is a show to encourage your imagination, and involvement and to provide a viewer with an emotional experience that is completely different for each person, depending on their personality and mood. There are no rules in abstract art. It should just be made up of color, shape, form, texture, and value and does not tell a story. For our show there is only one rule and that pertains to the size of the artwork. Our gallery has limited space so the size rule is so we can accommodate a lot of imaginative pieces to show. Maximum size will be 30 x 30 inches.
Entry fee is $10 per piece or $25 for 3 pieces. Cash prizes will be awarded. Art take in will be May 27, 28, 29, and 30 from 11:00 to 4:00 at the Corazon Gallery, 149 East Main St, Trinidad, Colorado.
The opening reception will be during the First Friday Art Walk on June 2nd at the Corazon Gallery. Cash prizes of $100, $75, and $50 will be awarded

Go Baby Go!

TRINIDAD—  Children’s Services at SCDDS will be hosting their first Go Baby Go! event on Saturday, May 20, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. ! Build teams will assemble and customize two ride-on motorized cars designed to give increased mobility to toddlers with developmental disabilities or delays. Children’s Services Department at Southern Colorado Developmental Disabilities is hosting the adaptive car building and outreach event at their office in Trinidad, 415 S. Indiana Ave.  Two toddlers from Huerfano & Las Animas counties will receive a car to support their development! A community outreach event titled, ‘Things That Go!’ will be hosted in conjunction with the Go Baby Go! workshop. This event will be open to children and families in the surrounding area and include transportation themed activities.

Armed Forces Day Parade

TRINIDAD— The Las Animas County Veteran’s Memorial Committee is proud to present the 2023 Armed Forces Day Parade on Saturday, May 20, 10 a.m. Featuring the Ft. The 2nd Annual “Echoes of History – Saving Trinidad’s Past”

TRINIDAD—  Echoes of History -Saving Trinidad’s Past produced by THPC, invites locals and guests to multiple sessions on Saturday, June 3, featuring Fox-West Theater’s lead architect, Gregory Friesen (CSNA) and East Street Culinary School’s architect, Paul Glenn (PTSM). Breakout sessions at Space to Create Commons demonstrate how to ‘Landmark’ an over 50 year-old property, rehabilitating The Wheeler Monument and meeting storytellers at many historic spaces. Trolley tours with guides at each site involve: Trinidad’s City Hall, Carnegie Library, Water Works, The Chappelle House, Fort Wootton Memorial Square and the “Santa Fe Style” Golf Course Club House designed by IH and WM Rapp in 1922.

Full Moon hike at Capulin Volcano

CAPULIN— Take a ranger guided hike at Capulin Volcano under the full or nearly full moon on Saturday, May 27, 8 p.m. Subjects include night time biology, lunar geography, astronomy, and the park after dark. Come and experience the top of Capulin Volcano in a new light! Wear warm clothing and layers as the weather may be chilly. Meet at the visitor center before heading up the volcano. Trail Project at Capulin Volcano National Monument

RATON— Join us for a two-day project at Capulin Volcano National Monument (near Raton). The volunteer work is slated for Saturday and Sunday, May 27-28, and will include overnight camping within the park.  All meals, tools and training will be provided.  NMVFO will improve two trails: the Boca Trail (a two-mile loop) and the Lava Flow Trail (a one-mile loop). Work includes lopping, moving rocks, and widening trail in some sections. Sloat Prince Foundation Scholarship for Colfax County graduates

COLFAX— The Sloat-Prince Foundation offers scholarships to graduates of Colfax County public or private high schools and to current Colfax County residents who may have graduated from high school elsewhere.  This includes public, private, charter, parochial or home school graduates.

To be considered for this scholarship, applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college/university, or a vocational, trade or business school.  New recipient applications, including official transcripts of all semesters, must be received by the foundation board on or before June 15, 2023.  Applications are now available by emailing umwaroy@bacavalley.com or by contacting your school’s administration or guidance counselor.

Movie: Where the Crawdads Sing

LA VETA— Join us at La Veta Public Library, 310 S. Main St., as we show the film based on the global best-selling phenomenon “Where the Crawdads Sing” on Thursday, May 11, 2 p.m. Where the Crawdads Sing tells the story of Kya, an abandoned girl who raised herself to adulthood in the dangerous marshlands of North Carolina. For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” haunted Barkley Cove, isolating the sharp and resilient Kya from her community. Drawn to two young men from town, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world; but when one of them is found dead, she is immediately cast by the community as the main suspect. Free Wrestling Camp from a pro

Wisdom Archives: Introduction to Colcha Embroidery

WALSENBURG—Colcha Embroidery is a style of needlework created by women in colonial settlements in northern New Mexico as early as the 1700’s. By the 1800’s it was also utilized in southern Colorado. Please join Sandy Dolak for an introduction to Colcha Embroidery on Friday, May 12 from 1-3 p.m. at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg. Come learn as well as get some hands-on experience with this historically significant art form. USPS Stamp Out Hunger food drive  

HUERFANO — Continuing a tradition that first began in 1993, the 31st annual letter carriers’ stamp out Hunger Food Drive will be Saturday, May 13.
“Millions of children and families living in America face hunger and food insecurity every day,” said Jeff Frey, Colorado Food Drive Coordinator.
You can contribute to the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive by putting non-perishable food items in a bag by your mailbox.  The Walsenburg Post Office will gather all donations and donate them to Dorcas Circle Food & Clothing Pantry, located at  911 S. Main in Walsenburg.

Beginning T’ai Chi at LVSA

Exhibit No Rules and Al Clymer Opening

LA VETA— The Spanish Peaks Arts Council(SPACe) in La Veta invites everyone to the opening reception for two new shows this Saturday, May 13, 5 – 7 p.m. In the west gallery, “Exhibit No Rules” is an exciting collection of original art by 27 area artists. Artists were encouraged to share artwork that challenges the viewer with the unexpected. Over 60 pieces of artwork include traditional, abstract, expressionistic, and unique styles in a variety of media.
Additionally, nationally acclaimed artist Albert Anderson Clymer is showing a collection of energetic new paintings in the east gallery. There is no admission fee, but donations are gratefully appreciated. Refreshments will be provided. The SPACe Gallery is located at 132 W. Ryus, in the La Veta Town Park. Weekly wildflower & weed walks

LA VETA—  Spring wildflowers and plants are popping and it is time to learn what is what. These gentle one hours walks are led by professional interpretive naturalist Bob Kennemer. They will take place every Wednesday, now through fall, from 5 – 6 p.m. somewhere in Huerfano County, often right in or near our cities or towns. La Veta will have their market every Thursday, 3-5 p.m. starting May 18th in the park next to the library on Main St. Cuchara will have their market on Fridays starting May 19, from 4 – 6 p.m. at the Cuchara Mountain Mercantile. Gardner will have their markets every Saturday, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. under the pavilion next to the Methodist church. Last but most certainly not least is Walsenburg’s market held every Sunday at Heritage Park on Main St. near the railroad tracks from 12 – 2 p.m. starting May 29. TRINIDAD— The Corazón de Trinidad Creative District is pleased to announce its monthly event for May, 2023; the Second Saturday Poetry Series continues on Saturday, May 13. Trinidad Water Festival

TRINIDAD— Every May, children from all over Las Animas, Huerfano, and Colfax counties gather at the Trinidad State College campus for a day of educational, engaging, and energizing activities focused on water. Agua es Vida (water is life) continues to be the motto for the festival. This year’s Trinidad Water Festival is scheduled for Thursday, May 18, on the Trinidad State College campus. Go Baby Go!

TRINIDAD—  Children’s Services at SCDDS will be hosting their first Go Baby Go! event on Saturday, May 20, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. ! Build teams will assemble and customize two ride-on motorized cars designed to give increased mobility to toddlers with developmental disabilities or delays. Children’s Services Department at Southern Colorado Developmental Disabilities is hosting the adaptive car building and outreach event at their office in Trinidad, 415 S. Indiana Ave.  Two toddlers from Huerfano & Las Animas counties will receive a car to support their development! A community outreach event titled, ‘Things That Go!’ will be hosted in conjunction with the Go Baby Go! workshop. This event will be open to children and families in the surrounding area and include transportation themed activities.

29th Children’s Fishing Derby

CIMARRON— Bring the kids and enjoy the day at the Gravel Pit Lakes – Maverick Campground at Cimmaron Canyon State Park for their annual kids fishing Derby on Saturday, May 13, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. This event is for children ages 3-11 and there is no entry fee. Trail Project at Capulin Volcano National Monument

RATON— Join us for a two-day project at Capulin Volcano National Monument (near Raton). The volunteer work is slated for Saturday and Sunday, May 27-28, and will include overnight camping within the park.  All meals, tools and training will be provided.  NMVFO will improve two trails: the Boca Trail (a two-mile loop) and the Lava Flow Trail (a one-mile loop). Work includes lopping, moving rocks, and widening trail in some sections. Sloat Prince Foundation Scholarship for Colfax County graduates

COLFAX— The Sloat-Prince Foundation offers scholarships to graduates of Colfax County public or private high schools and to current Colfax County residents who may have graduated from high school elsewhere.  This includes public, private, charter, parochial or home school graduates.

To be considered for this scholarship, applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college/university, or a vocational, trade or business school.  New recipient applications, including official transcripts of all semesters, must be received by the foundation board on or before June 15, 2023.  Applications are now available by emailing umwaroy@bacavalley.com or by contacting your school’s administration or guidance counselor.

OUR WORLD— The Junior Colorado Cattlemen’s Association is offering two scholarships for students interested in careers in agriculture.
The Fiebig-Lee Scholarship is open to students currently enrolled at Colorado State University, majoring or minoring in an agricultural-related field, health and human sciences, or a pre-vet undergraduate. https://tinyurl.com/h2dcz7x7
The Grace & Oley Kohlman Scholarship (named for CCA past-president, Oley Kohlman, and his wife Grace who were instrumental in the development of JCCA and the scholarship program) is open to all current JCCA members. Preference will be given to students majoring or minoring in an agricultural-related field in the state of Colorado. Weekly wildflower & weed walks

LA VETA—  Spring wildflowers and plants are popping and it is time to learn what is what. These gentle one hours walks are led by professional interpretive naturalist Bob Kennemer. HUERFANO — Continuing a tradition that first began in 1993, the 31st annual letter carriers’ stamp out Hunger Food Drive will be Saturday, May 13.
“Millions of children and families living in America face hunger and food insecurity every day,” said Jeff Frey, Colorado Food Drive Coordinator.
You can contribute to the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive by putting non-perishable food items in a bag by your mailbox.  The Walsenburg Post Office will gather all donations and donate them to Dorcas Circle Food & Clothing Pantry, located at  911 S. Main in Walsenburg.

Trinidad Water Festival

TRINIDAD— Every May, children from all over Las Animas, Huerfano, and Colfax counties gather at the Trinidad State College campus for a day of educational, engaging, and energizing activities focused on water. Agua es Vida (water is life) continues to be the motto for the festival. This year’s Trinidad Water Festival is scheduled for Thursday, May 18, on the Trinidad State College campus. An opening ceremony kicks things off at 8:30 a.m. with presentations running from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Anyone interested in participating in the festival, either as a school or presenter, please contact us at tomandlindaperry@gmail.com.

Go Baby Go!

TRINIDAD—  Children’s Services at SCDDS will be hosting their first Go Baby Go! event on Saturday, May 20, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. ! Build teams will assemble and customize two ride-on motorized cars designed to give increased mobility to toddlers with developmental disabilities or delays. Children’s Services Department at Southern Colorado Developmental Disabilities is hosting the adaptive car building and outreach event at their office in Trinidad, 415 S. Indiana Ave.  Two toddlers from Huerfano & Las Animas counties will receive a car to support their development! A community outreach event titled, ‘Things That Go!’ will be hosted in conjunction with the Go Baby Go! workshop. This event will be open to children and families in the surrounding area and include transportation themed activities.

Armed Forces Day Parade

TRINIDAD— The Las Animas County Veteran’s Memorial Committee is proud to present the 2023 Armed Forces Day Parade on Saturday, May 20, 10 a.m. Featuring the Ft. Sloat Prince Foundation Scholarship for Colfax County graduates

COLFAX— The Sloat-Prince Foundation offers scholarships to graduates of Colfax County public or private high schools and to current Colfax County residents who may have graduated from high school elsewhere.  This includes public, private, charter, parochial or home school graduates.  To be considered for this scholarship, applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college/university, or a vocational, trade or business school.  New recipient applications, including official transcripts of all semesters, must be received by the Foundation Board on or before June 15, 2023.  Applications are now available by emailing umwaroy@bacavalley.com or by contacting your school’s administration or guidance counselor.

OUR WORLD— The Junior Colorado Cattlemen’s Association is offering two scholarships for students interested in careers in agriculture.
The Fiebig-Lee Scholarship is open to students currently enrolled at Colorado State University, majoring or minoring in an agricultural-related field, health and human sciences, or a pre-vet undergraduate. https://tinyurl.com/h2dcz7x7
The Grace & Oley Kohlman Scholarship (named for CCA past-president, Oley Kohlman, and his wife Grace who were instrumental in the development of JCCA and the scholarship program) is open to all current JCCA members. Preference will be given to students majoring or minoring in an agricultural-related field in the state of Colorado. Weekly wildflower & weed walks

LA VETA—  Spring wildflowers and plants are popping and it is time to learn what is what. These gentle one hours walks are led by professional interpretive naturalist Bob Kennemer. They will take place every Wednesday, now through fall, from 5 – 6 p.m. somewhere in Huerfano County, often right in or near our cities or towns. Free Wrestling Camp from a pro

33rd Annual Family Health Fair

COLFAX—  Individuals of all ages from Colfax County, the surrounding area and beyond are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to obtain important health screenings and information from exhibitors at the 33rd Annual Family Health Fair. This year’s event will be held Thursday, April 27, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., at the Raton Convention Center, located at 901 South Third Street. Numerous free and reduced-fee health screenings can be found throughout the convention center along with information from over 40 educational exhibitors and professionals who will have information on a wide variety of health topics. Appointments are not needed for the screenings, but will be taken on a first come, first serve basis.

Clean-up Events:
Thursday, April 20, 2020: La Veta Trails Earth Day Spring Clean-up Day: Meet the group for litter pick up at the Recycling Bins on East Ryus at 9:00am.

Friday, April 21, 2023: Brush burn pile open -for town of La Veta residents only, no commercial business will be allowed to bring brush to the burn pile- Open (weather permitting) from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m The burn pile will be available for branches, limbs, leaves and yard waste. No tree stumps larger than 4” in diameter will be allowed. No construction material, this includes pallets, doors, or anything from a construction site.

Saturday, April 22, 2023: Town of La Veta Clean Up Day – For town of La Veta residents only, no commercial business will be allowed to bring trash, even if you cleaned it up for a La Veta resident: Open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (weather permitting). Dumpsters will be located at the north side of the recycling center bins. For a fee, disposal permitted for: tires, TV’s, electronics, lawnmowers with the oil drained.
No refrigerators or freezers, no paint, liquids, oils or chemicals will be accepted. Washers and dryers will be accepted. No household trash allowed. For more info call La Veta Town Hall at 719-743-3631.

Earth Day and Beaver Day

WALSENBURG— Get started at the River Front in Walsenburg on Friday, April 21, from 10 – 12:30 p.m.  We will be De-Trashing the stream and having a biologist speak on the local beavers that recently moved into the area and their importance to our ecosystem and impact on biodiversity.
In addition to picking up trash, and the informative talk, we are also offering free food from Gub Gub’s Pizza and Ice Cream to all attendees. The event will take place on the River Walk near the South Bridge, across from the Anchor Motel, from 10  to 12:30 p.m.

Our annual Earth Day Event pays tribute to volunteer Jon Sudar, who served at Lathrop State Park after retiring as a park ranger in the Grand Canyon.  His work helped build our history, geocache, and natural resource programs until his passing on Earth Day in 2015.

Honoring our Own

HUERFANO— The collaborative project between Huajatolla Heritage Foundation and the Huerfano County Board of County Commissioners is pleased to announce the two April honorees in our yearlong project of honoring the often-unrecognized citizens that have made a difference in our communities. Our elder to be honored will be Juanita Maes of Red Wing (who is celebrating her 100 th birthday on April 20 th ) and our “younger” will be Antonia Martinez of Walsenburg. Weekly wildflower & weed walks

LA VETA—  Spring wildflowers and plants are popping and it is time to learn what is what. These gentle one hours walks are led by professional interpretive naturalist Bob Kennemer. They will take place every Wednesday, now through fall, from 5 – 6 p.m. somewhere in Huerfano County, often right in or near our cities or towns. 33rd Annual Family Health Fair

COLFAX—  Individuals of all ages from Colfax County, the surrounding area and beyond are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to obtain important health screenings and information from exhibitors at the 33rd Annual Family Health Fair. This year’s event will be held Thursday, April 27, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., at the Raton Convention Center, located at 901 South Third Street. Numerous free and reduced-fee health screenings can be found throughout the convention center along with information from over 40 educational exhibitors and professionals who will have information on a wide variety of health topics. Appointments are not needed for the screenings, but will be taken on a first come, first serve basis.

Sloat Prince Foundation Scholarship for Colfax County graduates

COLFAX— The Sloat-Prince Foundation offers scholarships to graduates of Colfax County public or private high schools and to current Colfax County residents who may have graduated from high school elsewhere.  This includes public, private, charter, parochial or home school graduates.  To be considered for this scholarship, applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college/university, or a vocational, trade or business school.  New recipient applications, including official transcripts of all semesters, must be received by the Foundation Board on or before June 15, 2023.  Applications are now available by emailing umwaroy@bacavalley.com or by contacting your school’s administration or guidance counselor.
