Post-Spring Fire Talk – Five Years Later

LA VETA— Join La Veta Trails at La Veta Mercantile, 300 S. Main St., La Veta, on Thursday, Oct. 12, 6 p.m. for a Post-Spring Fire Talk – Five Years Later. Manuel Molles, Derek Sokoloski, and Mary Anne Nelson will present an update on ecosystem recovery five years after the Spring Fire. This talk is a follow-up to their discussions in 2018 and 2019 and will focus on ecosystem recovery across the Spring Fire burn scar along gradients of fire severity, including soil properties and regrowth and survival of herbaceous plants, shrubs, and trees. Fire mitigation, flooding, erosion, and altered hydrology will also be discussed. Manuel is a Professor Emeritus at the University of New Mexico, Derek is the Southeast Area Manager of the Colorado State Forest Service, and Mary Anne is a Professor Emerita at the University of New Mexico. Fall Craft Festival

WALSENBURG— Come to Huerfano Nursery and Garden, 704 Walsen Ave in Walsenburg, on Friday Oct. 13, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 14, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. You’ll find local artists selling mosaics, yard art, home décor, jewelry, wildlife photography, and more! It’s a great time to stock up on one-of-a-kind holiday gifts all the while supporting our locals. Decorative pumpkins will also be available, as well as pumpkin carving for kids! Mark your calendars: it’s an event you won’t want to miss!

SPLD Presents Flicks at the Library

WALSENBURG— Friday, Oct. 13, 1:30 p.m.  It’s back!  Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg will once again be showing movies in our meeting room with FREE popcorn!  This month we will be showing Hocus Pocus, starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy as 3 witches seeking immortality and 3 teens who aim to stop them.  Don’t miss this spooky fun movie!

Care and Share Mobile Market

LA VETA—  The La Veta Village assisted living residence partners with Care and Share Food Bank of Southern Colorado to provide food for those in need in the greater La Veta area. The monthly Mobile Market provides no-cost groceries. Everyone in the community is welcome to shop at the market. Simply walk up and choose food you would like to take home. The Mobile Market is coming to the La Veta Village parking lot 109 East Francisco Street on Fridays, Oct. 13th, Nov. 17th, and Dec. 15th from 2 – 3:30 p.m. Bring Your Own Bags. Eclipse Event at SPLD

WALSENBURG— The Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg will be hosting a community Eclipse Event on Saturday, Oct. 14, 9 – 11 a.m. They will be giving eclipse glasses to people who show up and participate. For more information on the Eclipse check out this week’s Astronomy Article on page

Huerfano County Historical Society Annual Meeting

WALSENBURG—The Huerfano County Historical Society will hold its annual meeting  on Saturday, Oct. 14, 11 a.m. at the La Plaza Historic Hotel, 118 W. 6th in Walsenburg. A pot roast lunch will start at noon. Guest speaker, Bob deWitt will present “Gone But Not Forgotten, Some Early Coal Camps of Southern Colorado after the noon luncheon. Fall Colors Concert

CUCHARA— We are excited to announce our first Fall Colors Concert on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 4 p.m. We have a great lineup including the headliners and Southern Colorado hottest party band, the The Martini Shot along with the great Mason Davis and the Colorado Double Barrel Band. Of course, all proceeds benefit our work at Cuchara Mountain Park. Don’t miss it!

Inner Idea Artists at SPACe

LA VETA— Everyone is invited to help celebrate another successful year of art exploration and experimentation with a show by Inner Idea Artists at SPACe in La Veta.  Enjoy art, wine and hors d’oeuvres on Saturday, Oct. 14, 5 – 7 p.m.

St. Mary’s Fall Festival

WALSENBURG— St. Mary Catholic Church in Walsenburg will celebrate its 2023 Fall Festival in Msgr. Delaney Hall, 121 E. 7th, on Sunday, Oct. 15 after the 10:30 Mass. Festivities will begin with a full spaghetti & meatball dinner, including garlic bread, salad, dessert and drink, from 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for kids 2 to 10. From 2 to 3:30 p.m., bid in on the “Purse Auction”, featuring treat-filled bags ranging from tool boxes to designer handbags.  At 3:45, they’ll announce the winners of the Cash Raffle with $500, $300, and $100 prizes. La Veta Writes ~ Monthly Writing Group

LA VETA— Are you interested in making writing and/or journaling a bigger part of your life and, perhaps, looking for support, encouragement or resources? Or, are you a longtime writer working on a project, a song writer or a poet? Whatever your experience, we’d love to have you join us at the monthly gathering of La Veta Writes, Tuesday, Oct. 17, 3 – 5 p.m. at The Parkside Art Gallery, 127 W Ryus Ave. (We meet on the 3rd Tuesday of every month.) If you would like to practice reading your work aloud, bring up to 2-pages (double-spaced, 12 pt). This is a free gathering. Huerfano County Farm Bureau Annual Meeting

LA VETA— The Huerfano County Farm Bureau Board would like to invite you to attend the Huerfano County Farm Bureau Annual Meeting.  This is not limited to Farm Bureau members, but anyone is welcome who is interested in finding out more about the organization and its function.  The meeting will be on Saturday, Oct. 21, 11:30 a.m. at the La Veta Community Center located at 131 E. Ryus Ave.  Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m. followed by a lasagna lunch and homemade desserts provided by Huerfano County Farm Bureau.  There will be speakers from the state office to give updates on programs. FCPA Show Choir

LA VETA— Francisco Center for the Performing Arts Show Choir is excited to start our sixth season
of entertainment. This is a non-auditioned choir and offers a community singing experience starting on
Wednesday, Oct. 25, 5:30 – 6:45 p.m. Francisco Center of the Performing Arts,127 West Francisco, La Veta. So take your fabulous voices out of the shower and join in
preparing a show for early-March. The FCPA Show Choir is under the primary direction of Sam Sortore,

LVPL Science Symposium

LA VETA— The La Veta Library will host its second installment of the Science Symposium brought to you by Dr. Ed Donovan of La Veta on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2 p.m.  This seminar will feature David Moore. PhD who had a 34 year career as a U.S. Geological Surveyor and who served our country as a helicopter pilot during the war in Viet Nam. His topic will be “Continents have not ALWAYS” been where they are today” and promises to be very enlightening .  Audience participation is encouraged and refreshments will be provided.

October Food Drive

TRINIDAD— During the month of October, the Trinidad History Museum is holding a canned food drive (human and pet!) to gather donations for Fishers Peak Soup Kitchen and Pet Assistance League Store. A donation drop-off will be available in the museum gift shop during opening hours, and if you bring canned food to any of Trinidad History Museum’s events this month, you’ll receive special discounts and goodies!  The hours for the Museum are Tuesday – Saturday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Have questions? Double-Feature Fright Nights

TRINIDAD— If you can’t imagine celebrating this spooky season without viewing cinematic classics of the horror genre then Trinidad History Museum has got you covered. Featuring the shocking, suspenseful, and undeniably captivating, Double-Feature Fright Nights includes 4 full nights of back-to-back screenings dedicated to movies that chill the bones! These movie screenings will take place on the museum grounds Friday, Oct 13, 20, 27, and Tuesday, Oct. 31st, 6 – 9 p.m.

Open Mic for all Literary Souls

TRINIDAD— The Corazón de Trinidad Creative District Announces Second Saturdays – Open Mic for all Literary Souls. The series is hosted by the Creative District on the Second Saturday of the month at The Commons at Space to Create, 218 West Main St. On Saturday, Oct. 14, 7 p.m. the evening will begin with a featured writer; the microphone then opens to all who would like to share their creative literary efforts. This event is free and open to the public.

Trinidad Autism Organization annual fundraiser

Jack-O’-Lantern Carving

TRINIDAD—  Tuesday, Oct. 17, 4:30 – 6 p.m. Bring your gourds or root vegetables and join the Trinidad History Museum for an evening of carving jack-o’-lanterns and learning about their eerie history! All tools will be provided, but for a cash or shelf-stable food donation, you can also carve one of the vegetables from Trinidad History Museum’s very own “pumpkin patch.” No tickets or reservations are required for this free spooky season event.

Town Hall Meeting

TRINIDAD— The Town Hall Meeting will be on Wednesday, Oct. 18, 6 – 8 p.m. at Commons at Space to Create, 218 W. Main, Trinidad. The community is invited to join the City of Trinidad for this special Town Hall meeting to discuss the past, present, and future of Trinidad, Colorado.
Mayor Phil Rico, City Manager Steve Ruger, city council members and city department heads have compiled a presentation for their accomplishments in 2023, the current projects being worked on and outline the goals for Trinidad over the next few months.

Garbage Glam

TRINIDAD— Garbage Glam is coming to Main Street Live Theater on Friday, Oct. 20, 7 p.m. Local non-profit groups will benefit from this wacky collection of wearable recycled and/or up-cycled materials, and those wishing to show off holiday costumes are also welcome to join the fun on stage for a chance to win trophies. Howl-o-ween Hangout at Trinidad History Museum

TRINIDAD— Saturday, Oct. 21, 1 p.m., join the Howl-o-ween fun at Trinidad History Museum, 120 South Chestnut. Bring your pooch by the museum to show off costumes (human and canine!), grab a goodie bag for your pet, and take a cute pic at our photo booth! Admission to the event is FREE! TRINIDAD— The City of Trinidad and the Corazon de Trinidad Creative District are proudly hosting the traveling Smithsonian Exhibition Crossroads: Change in Rural America. RATON— On Tuesday, Oct. 17, 6 – 8:30 p.m. there will be an election forum at the Raton Convention Center. School bond, School Board, Municipal Judge and City Commission will be the forum topics. Moderated by Laura Brewer, The Ratonian and Victoria Vega, RHS Alumnus.

Lion’s Club free glasses day

RATON— The Raton Lion’s Club will be holding a free event open to anyone in our community on Saturday, Oct. 21, 9  – 11:45 a.m. at the Isabel Castillo Event Center located at 123 S. 2nd Street in downtown Raton. Those attending the event will be able to try on and order a FREE brand-new pair of eyeglass frames. Frames for men, women, and children will be available. Prescription single-vision lenses and lined bifocal lenses are included. Each person MUST to bring a current copy of their glasses prescription (no expired prescription will be accepted). No progressive or transition lenses are available.

Independent Riders of Raton Bake Sale

RPS Fall Festival

RATON— On Saturday, Oct. 21, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Raton Public Schools will have their Annual Fall Festival at Tiger Stadium. There will be over 40 booths and vendors plus cornhole, petting zoo, pony rides, food, costume contest, bouncy house and much more!

Raton Witch Walk

RATON— Gather your friends and family for a wickedly wonderful party in downtown Raton on Saturday, Oct. 21, 4 p.m. – 12 a.m. Raton Witch Bar Crawl, Charity Fundraiser and Private Dance Party at the VFW with DJ Beverly Baca. $40 to participate, includes drinks and appetizers at 6 stopping points and admittance to the private dance party. Celebration Outreach

RATON— Come join us for free hamburgers and hot dogs on Friday, Oct. 27, 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. during the Celebration Outreach.  The Interdisciplinary Team members from albuquerque will be at the Raton CBOC VHA, 1493 Whittier Street, handing out information. New Mexico Department of Veteran Services will be on site to answer questions and assist Veterans. COVID and Flu Vaccinations will be available all day. Charles Parson at Capulin Volcano National Monument

CAPULIN— This nationally exhibited sculptor, muralist, draftsman, installation-performance artist and educator will be in the park Sunday, Oct. 15 through Saturday, Nov. 18 developing on-site and dimensional drawings, along with informal conversations with visitors. BENT COUNTY— The 75th anniversary of John Martin Dam/Reservoir. Post-Spring Fire Talk – Five Years Later

LA VETA— Join La Veta Trails at La Veta Mercantile, 300 S. Main St., La Veta, on Thursday, Oct. 12, 6 p.m. for a Post-Spring Fire Talk – Five Years Later. Manuel Molles, Derek Sokoloski, and Mary Anne Nelson will present an update on ecosystem recovery five years after the Spring Fire. This talk is a follow-up to their discussions in 2018 and 2019 and will focus on ecosystem recovery across the Spring Fire burn scar along gradients of fire severity, including soil properties and regrowth and survival of herbaceous plants, shrubs, and trees. Fire mitigation, flooding, erosion, and altered hydrology will also be discussed. Manuel is a Professor Emeritus at the University of New Mexico, Derek is the Southeast Area Manager of the Colorado State Forest Service, and Mary Anne is a Professor Emerita at the University of New Mexico. St. Mary’s Fall Festival

WALSENBURG— St. Mary Catholic Church in Walsenburg will celebrate its 2023 Fall Festival in Msgr. Delaney Hall, 121 E. 7th, on Sunday, Oct. 15 after the 10:30 Mass. Festivities will begin with a full spaghetti & meatball dinner, including garlic bread, salad, dessert and drink, from 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for kids 2 to 10. Huerfano County Farm Bureau Annual Meeting

LA VETA— The Huerfano County Farm Bureau Board would like to invite you to attend the Huerfano County Farm Bureau Annual Meeting.  This is not limited to Farm Bureau members, but anyone is welcome who is interested in finding out more about the organization and its function.  The meeting will be on Saturday, Oct. 21, 11:30 a.m. at the La Veta Community Center located at 131 E. Banned Book Event at the Library

Lion’s Club free glasses day

RATON— The Raton Lion’s Club will be holding a free event open to anyone in our community on Saturday, Oct. 21, 9  – 11:45 a.m. at the Isabel Castillo Event Center located at 123 S. 2nd Street in downtown Raton. Those attending the event will be able to try on and order a FREE brand-new pair of eyeglass frames. Frames for men, women, and children will be available. Prescription single-vision lenses and lined bifocal lenses are included. Each person MUST to bring a current copy of their glasses prescription (no expired prescription will be accepted). No progressive or transition lenses are available.

Abuelos art class

WALSENBURG— The monthly abuelos art class will be held Thursday, Sept. 28, 1 – 3 p.m. at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg. Homecoming Parades

HUERFANO— On Friday, Sept. 29, 10 a.m. the La Veta Red Hawks will have their Homecoming Parade down Main Street in La Veta. Later that day at 3 p.m. the Walsenburg Jr. Sr. High School will have their annual Homecoming Parade on Main Street Walsenburg. Help support our local students but lining up along Main St. and checking out their floats. Both Main Streets will be closed in La Veta and Walsenburg during the parades, please respect barricades and traffic detours to help keep our community safe. The high school football games will kick of that evening at 7 p.m. at the home fields. Go Red Hawks and Panthers!

Coal Camps, Cow Camps

WALSENBURG— Sandy Dolak with be at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg every Friday in Sept. from 1 – 3 p.m. to collect pictures and stories of the miners, ranchers and cowboys that shaped the legacy of Huerfano County. I can scan the pictures and hand them right back to you. This is such an important story to be told and will be presented to the community on November 4 at the county community center in Walsenburg. Spaghetti Dinner with the Eagles Ladies Auxiliary

WALSENBURG— Walsenburg Ladies Eagles Auxiliary #1187, will be hosting a fundraiser dinner, on Friday, Sept. 29, 5 – 7 p.m. at the eagles hall 614 Main St Walsenburg. Money raised will go towards The Bridge for the Cure to help find a cure for diabetes. The Eagles Ladies Auxiliary #1187 well be serving spaghetti, meatballs, salad and desert with coffee and water. WALSENBURG— The Walsenburg Woman’s Club, Spanish Peaks Library and Flamingo Book Club are teaming up for a day of service. They will be giving away PB&J Sandwich supplies, and childrens books on Saturday, Sep. 30. We are currently asking for donation from teh community to make this event possible. Any time of peanut butter, nut butter, jelly, jam, bread and childrens books. The donation drop off is the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg.

WALSENBURG— On Saturday, Sept. 30, 7:30 – 11:30 a.m. the Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center will be hosting a Community Health Fair at the Huerfano County Community Center in Walsenburg. For $60 you get a lab panel which includes; comprehensive metabolic

Nolan Strong Fundraiser concert

WALSENBURG— Master of the Hammond B3 and most soulful vocalist this side of the Mississippi, Shawn Brown, will be at the Fox Theatre on Saturday, Sept. 30, 6 p.m. Meet Baby Nolan Rinker, 18 months, a proud 5th generation native of Huerfano County who has been diagnosed with Apert Syndrome.  Tickets are $15 and the money goes toward helping Nolan and his family with the medical expenses. Banned Book Event at the Library

Pals Low Cost Dog and Cat Spay/Neuter Event

TRINIDAD— PALS, Pet Assistance League, in Trinidad, is sponsoring a huge, low cost spay and neuter clinic for cats and dogs, on October 12 through 15, in Trinidad, by the Bergen Spay & Neuter Alliance. The celts are back

HUERFANO —  Bring out your bagpipes and rosin your bows, the celtic fest is back in town!
The Spanish Peaks International Celtic Music Festival has four days of all things Scottish and Irish planned.  If you’ve ever wanted to learn to play the tin whistle or dance a cèilidh, if you want to hear about ancient castles, if you want to learn about making it in the music industry, or if you just want to bask in the glow of fun accents, the festival is the place to be.  There are both free and paid options all weekend.

The party kicks off tonight with a welcome party at Uptop with a céilí session.  A handful of classes in La Veta will happen all afternoon, and the evening features a concert in La Veta (advance tickets only).

Friday, things start really heating up, with a full day of workshops for beginners to proficients to hone their musical skills.  Demonstrations and talks abound.  Friday afternoon, pop back to Walsenburg for a free concert, the 6th St. Hooley, at Miners Plaza (6th and Main) at 5 p.m.  The evening’s concert will be held at the Fox Theatre, and for those who can stay up that late, after-concert session playing will be held at the Crafty Canary in Walsenburg and at  the La Veta Mercantile.

Saturday too is full of even more events, again with an evening concert at the Fox and late night sessions after.

Sunday morning, swing by the Estelle Center for a free tea and scone breakfast, with one last concert at the La Veta Mercantile (advance tickets only) at 1 p.m.

Coal Camps, Cow Camps

WALSENBURG— Sandy Dolak with be at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg every Friday in Sept. from 1 – 3 p.m. to collect pictures and stories of the miners, ranchers and cowboys that shaped the legacy of Huerfano County. I can scan the pictures and hand them right back to you. This is such an important story to be told and will be presented to the community on November 4 at the county community center in Walsenburg. Spanish Peaks Harp Retreat

WALSENBURG— The 2023 Spanish Peaks Harp Retreat happens this weekend, Sept. 21 – 24.  You are apt to see harps and harpers coming and going in Walsenburg, including world class instructors Lynn Soirse from Ireland and Rachael Hair from Scotland!
Attendees range from beginners to professionals and will work with the instructors for a total of 14 hours, as well as private lessons and special workshops like a presentation on ‘Manx Music’, storytelling with harp and more.
On Saturday, Sept. 23, 1 p.m. the harp participants work with the Spanish Peaks Piping class, and it is a wonderful thing to hear!  This event is free and open to the public. TRINIDAD— On Saturday, Sept. 23 join the very first trail run in Fishers Peak State Park, prominently presiding at 9,633 feet. Race will feature a loop trail, starting at the Goldenrod Trail, going to the end of that trail and connecting to the Upper Lone Cub and then ending on the Lower Lone Cub. This race will be a 12K. Purgatoire Watershed Partnership kids day

TRINIDAD— Join us for an exciting day of kids tarantula exploration and adventure on Friday Sept. 29, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Trinidad Community Center. This free event in Trinidad kicks off a tarantula extravaganza weekend happening in Southeast Colorado and the 2nd Annual La Junta Tarantula Festival!
Tarantula experts from the Butterfly Pavilion in Denver (butterflies.org) will be coming to Trinidad to introduce us to tarantulas up close and teach us about their world, then lead us out into the eastern plains of the Purgatoire River watershed on an adventure to look for tarantulas in their natural habitat! Plus free lunch and a free tarantula stuffed animal or other non-live version of a tarantula for each child attendee to take home, as well as free Tarantula Cycles t-shirts, water bottles, and bandanas to take home!

Final Friday mountain bike meetup

TRINIDAD— Introducing Final Fridays at Fishers on the last Friday of each month. Join Tarantula for a lap (or two or three) on Poison Canyon at Fishers Peak State Park Friday, Sept. 29 at 6:30 p.m. Work on your skills, chase your buddies, get after it or take it slow and session some features. Pals Low Cost Dog and Cat Spay/Neuter Event

TRINIDAD— PALS, Pet Assistance League, in Trinidad, is sponsoring a huge, low cost spay and neuter clinic for cats and dogs, on October 12 through 15, in Trinidad, by the Bergen Spay & Neuter Alliance. This includes free Rabies, DAPPv/HCP and microchipping. Pre-registration and pre-payment is required. To book an appointment stop by the PALS thrift store, 500 W. Moon Light Hike at Capulin

CAPULIN— On Saturday, Sept. 23, 7:30 p.m. see Capulin Volcano in a new light on a ranger guided hike at Capulin Volcano under the light of the moon!
Subjects include nighttime biology, lunar geography, astronomy, and the park after dark. The hike will be 1 – 1.5 hours long and will be on the mile long Crater Rim Trail.

Story Share at Fox Theatre

WALSENBURG— Please join the Museum of Friends in welcoming the Story Share program with
the Playback Theatre of CU Boulder and drama
professor Jim Walker. They will be teaching and performing improvised interpretations of stories told by local residents. Local artists, writers and musicians who have created works inspired by these stories will be in attendance. The improvisational troup will present a lively and entertaining culmination of many months of interviewing and videotaping some of Walsenburg’s most interesting community members. Artists, writers and musical composers have been developing new works based on these stories. Open Reception for Changes

Spanish Peaks International Celtic Music Festival

Hybrid Wilderness First Responder course

TRINIDAD— Are you prepared to have any challenge, anywhere? Join Wilderness Medical Associates International for their training in wilderness medicine hybrid course. The Hybrid WFR is the newest in our line-up of course offerings and includes an e-learningmodule and an in-person module. The e-learning module requires 30+ hours of online, computer-based learning that must be completed prior to participating in 40+ hours of in-person learning over the course of five (5) days. The Hybrid WFR is suited for those new to wilderness medicine as well as those with some previous medical experience. This course is held Monday, Sept. 18 – Saturday, Sept. 23. Fishers Peak Trail Race

TRINIDAD— On Saturday, Sept. 23 join the very first trail run in Fishers Peak State Park, prominently presiding at 9,633 feet. Race will feature a loop trail, starting at the Goldenrod Trail, going to the end of that trail and connecting to the Upper Lone Cub and then ending on the Lower Lone Cub. This race will be a 12K. WALSENBURG— Sandy Dolak with be at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg every Friday in Sept. from 1 – 3 p.m. to collect pictures and stories of the miners, ranchers and cowboys that shaped the legacy of Huerfano County. Weekend activities at Lathrop

WALSENBURG— The wonderful Walsenburg Dance Group, El Fandango, will perform at Lathrop State Park Friday, Sept. 1. 5:30 p.m. at the Amphitheater. El Fandango has played an integral cultural role in Walsenburg for over 70 years. Established in 1938, El Fandango is the oldest folkloric dance group in Colorado, and consists of students that range from pre-school through high school.
On Saturday, Sept. 2, 7 p.m. local guitar musician, Tuco Taveras, returns to play at Lathrop State Park Amphitheater. His music consists of Rockabilly sounds of the 60’s. Tuco has played open mics in Trinidad, Aguilar, Walsenburg and La Veta. On Tuesday, Sept. 5, 6 p.m. meet at the Visitor’s Center and spend some quality time with your dog in good company. Bring your dogs and walk with Trisha, one of our awesome, local volunteers, along the Cuerna Verde Trail. Go the full 2.8 miles or as far as you and
your dog want! Remember to bring a water bottle, Hat/Sunscreen, and bug spray. Meet at 6pm at the Lathrop State Park Visitor’s Center. As always park passes are required for all vehicles.

Experimental Drawing and Painting at LVSA

Sunday, Sept. 3, 7 p.m. Join park staff in welcoming naturalist and environmental interpreter, Bob Kennemer.  Bob will focus on edible, medicinal, dangerous, and useful wild plants found in the Spanish Peaks region. Bob will be joined by Ranger/Interpreter Pat Patrick as they prepare some delicious wild treats in the Horno and the Dutch Oven for you to sample.

TRINIDAD— Trinidad Trails Alliance Second Saturday Trailwork will be working on the Boulevard & Riverwalk on Saturday, Sept. 9, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. We’ll meet at the flags near Safeway, bring gloves & water. Tools provided.
This month we’ll be working on the “Blue Heron” singletrack trail along the river in the Boulevard area as well as the “Trout Trail” leading from Safeway flags down to the river on the east side of the bridge. Expect general cleanup with lopping and raking, re-building the entrance to the singletrack trail, and trash pickup.

Night Sky Viewing

CAPULIN— Saturday, Sept. 9, 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. Join us for an exceptional Dark Sky experience. Telescopes are provided to view the dark northeastern New Mexico skies. You will see planets, galaxies, nebula, and other amazing sights all with your own eyes. Capulin Volcano is at a higher altitude of over 6,000 feet. Nights can get chilly even in summer. A jacket, long pants, and closed toe shoes are recommended to attend a Dark Sky program. No reservations are needed. Dark Sky programs may be changed or cancelled due to weather. ‘Crossroads: Changes in Rural America’
WALSENBURG— In conjunction with the Smithsonian Institution’s upcoming  “Crossroads: Changes in Rural America” show to be hosted by the Museum of Friends, a series of public programs and facilitated conversations is planned.
All are free events, with donations welcome.
Planned events include a Volunteer and Docent Training sessions on how to lead tours through this exhibit on  Friday, Aug. 25, 3 p.m., and a School-Tour program available for youth K through 12 from Aug. 29, through Oct. 8. Additionally on Saturday, Sept. 16, Museum of Friends will host Story Share with CU Boulder Drama Department’s Professor Jim Walker and Improvisation Troupe. Culminating conversations will be held in the fall to explore the impact that the exhibit had on opening dialogue within the community. LA VETA— Attention history buffs, outdoor enthusiasts, nature lovers, and landowners. Local interpretive naturalist Bob Kennemer is presenting a 90 minute program on The history of edible, medicinal, useful, and dangerous wild plants of Spanish Peaks Country on Saturday, Aug. 26, 1 p.m. Indigenous peoples, early Spanish, and European settlers relied on these plants. Huerfano County and south/central Colorado are home to hundreds of important and useful wild plants. This program will teach you about many of them, along with tips on how to ID plants, tools, and equipment needed and ethical foraging methods. LA VETA— on Sunday, Aug. 27, 4 – 7 p.m. at The Parkside Gallery, La Veta artist Albert Anderson Clymer will talk about his Artwork inspired by the historic Wounded Knee Massacre of December 29 1890. Many of his paintings refer to this tragedy. Clymer himself is of Native American descent, mainly Choctaw, which contributed to his inspiration. A raffle will be held with a couple of Clymers’ paintings as prizes. The proceeds will be donated to a charity that supports kids of the Pine Ridge Lakota Indian Reservation in South Dakota. The Director’s Forum is a group of theatre artists who work primarily as directors for the productions of Main Street LIVE, but also serve as actors and designers. Mind the Gap –  Intergenerational Theatre Program

TRINIDAD— An intergenerational theatre program created by New York Theatre Workshop, connecting young people and elders through the power of storytelling. This free workshop matches Trinidadians age 60 and up with teens ages 14 to 19. Participants interview each other over the course of 12 sessions, learning about their intergenerational partner’s lives and dreams.They write short plays inspired by their partner’s personal stories, and in a culminating evening of sharings, hear their scripts read aloud by local actors. RATON— The Raton Lions Club is having a Toy Land Character Contest.  We invite contestants to use their talent to create new characters that will be displayed on Apache Avenue on the way to City of Bethlehem. Night Sky Viewing

CAPULIN— Saturday, Sept. 9, 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. Join us for an exceptional Dark Sky experience. Telescopes are provided to view the dark northeastern New Mexico skies. You will see planets, galaxies, nebula, and other amazing sights all with your own eyes. Capulin Volcano is at a higher altitude of over 6,000 feet. Nights can get chilly even in summer. A jacket, long pants, and closed toe shoes are recommended to attend a Dark Sky program. No reservations are needed. Dark Sky programs may be changed or cancelled due to weather. Capulin Volcano National Monument is located at 46 Volcano Hwy.
