SH12 PEL Study info meeting today

LA VETA — Come out for an informal Coffee Chat regarding the Southern Mountain Loop along State Highway 12 Thursday, Jan. 16, 12- 1 p.m. at La Veta Mercantile, 300 S Main Street. The goal of the informal coffee chat meetings is to introduce the alternative concepts and get feedback and input. This will be an opportunity to learn about the study, provide comments on the alternatives and learn about the study’s recommendations. These chats are not official public meetings, but rather opportunities to meet and visit with the study team.

The South Central Council of Governments and Colorado Department of Transportation are studying the Scenic Highway of Legends (SHOL) byway, an 82 mile corridor between Walsenburg and Trinidad along US 160 and State Highway 12. The purpose of the project is to improve highway safety and provide a regional and local multi-use trail, completing the Colorado Front Range Trail (CFRT), along the byway. The CFRT is a planned multi-use trail by the Colorado Parks and Wildlife along the Front Range from Wyoming to New Mexico. This study, being conducted as a Planning and Environmental Linkages study, will determine a master plan of future projects to improve highway safety and provide a multi-use trail. For more information call 719-742-3387.

NA meetings in Raton

RATON — NA meetings are held every Monday from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Mesa Church, 140 North 1st Street. Here’s what you can expect at your Narcotics Anonymous meeting. Open- ing discussion usually starts with a prayer and an introduc- tion. During introduction, members will state their names and if comfortable, may also state a little something about them- selves such as their addiction or the number of days they have in sobriety. Try to get to the meeting early so that you can meet with some of the members of the group early on. You might even find a sponsor during this time.

Make the most out of the meeting by asking as many questions as you have and being open and honest. If you can spend additional time to talk and mingle with other members of the group after the meeting, that will be good too. If you are an addict who is in recovery, you can attend closed sessions but if you are not an addict and simply want to take some time to experience a meeting, attending an open meeting is the best option.

For the best results and the greatest support, NA recommends that new members attend one meeting every day for the first 90 days—90 meetings in 90 days. Most meetings will have a single speaker and moderator and will focus on one of the twelve-steps of recovery, some include excerpts from the Bible too. Attending Narcotics Anonymous meetings regularly can help you to build bonds with other members of the group and you may progress through the twelve-steps with a better understanding of each. The end goal is to be in recovery and to become a sponsor who can help others who are in their early stages of the NA program.

NA meetings in Raton

RATON — NA meetings are held every Monday from 7 pm to 8 pm at Mesa Church, 140 North 1st Street. Here’s what you can expect at your Narcotics Anonymous meeting. Open- ing discussion usually starts with a prayer and an introduction.

Those nurses and other Luminaries from throughout the state will attend an event in Denver on May 9, 2020 sponsored by the Colorado Nurses Foundation where the Finalists will receive Nightingale Awards in recognition of their achievements.

“Nurses are an enormously important part of the health care system in rural areas like southeastern Colorado and it is only fitting that their contributions are recognized,” said Doreen Gonzales, SECAHEC’s executive director. “Any individual or organization can nominate a nurse for this honor.” “In order to make all nurses eligible they can be nominated in either the clinical practice or administration categories. Clinical nurses deal directly with patients while administrative nurses are involved in administrative, education, research and other non-traditional areas.”

Since the SECAHEC Nightingale Nurse Recognition award program was initiated in 1986, more than 250 southeastern Colorado nurses have been nominated. SECAHEC has recognized nurses in the counties it serves including Baca, Bent, Chaffee, Cheyenne, Crowley, Custer, Fremont, Huerfano, Kiowa, Lake, Las Animas, Otero, Park, Prowers, Pueblo and Teller counties.

“As a financial institution that serves southeastern Colorado, we understand healthy communities require access to great healthcare and great healthcare is essential to thriving communities,” commented Andrew Trainor Regional President of Legacy Bank which is a sponsor of the SECAHEC Nightingale award program.

“Shining a light on individuals that are a key to building up the communities we serve is an honor. We hope that by helping to recognize these unsung heroes that we can encourage more medical professionals to seek out professional healthcare opportunities especially in rural Colorado,” added Trainor. “If we can find more ways to support this industry through funding, encouragement and strategy, we can work together to build a stronger Colorado.”

Any person wishing to nominate a nurse for the Nightingale Award can obtain information about the process by visiting www.coloradonursesfoundation.com. The nomination deadline is January 15, 2020.

Sugarite lakes closed due to bad ice

RATON — New Mexico State Parks officials have closed both Lake Maloya and Lake Alice at Sugarite Canyon State Park because of bad ice as of Dec. 20. “We want to keep everyone safe, including park staff who might have to take part in any rescue or recovery,” said Park Superintendent Robert McIvor.

Both lakes are popular fishing destinations for rainbow trout, including some trophy-sized trout at Lake Maloya. “When we determine that the ice is thick enough to allow activities, we will announce that,” McIvor added.

Sugarite Canyon State Park encompasses 4,000 acres located six miles northeast of Raton via State Highways 526 and 72. The park includes 20 miles of hiking trails, two campgrounds, and the remains of a historic coal mining. For move information, call the park at 575-445-5607.

NA meetings in Raton

RATON — NA meetings are held every Monday from 7 pm to 8 pm at Mesa Church, 140 North 1st Street. Here’s what you can expect at your Narcotics Anonymous meeting. Opening discussion usually starts with a prayer and an introduction. During introduction, members will state their names and if comfortable, may also state a little something about themselves such as their addiction or the number of days they have in sobriety.

Opening discussion usually starts with a prayer and an introduction. During introduction, members will state their names and if comfortable, may also state a little something about themselves such as their addiction or the number of days they have in sobriety.

For the best results and the greatest support, NA recommends that new members at- tend one meeting every day for the first 90 days—90 meetings in 90 days.

Redskin dig first half hole against Trojans

by David High

ANTONITO — The Antonito girls’ varsity basketball team won Friday’s home conference game against La Veta by a score of 36-28. A big 18-point second quarter by the Trojans was the deciding factor, along with a slow start by the Redskins whose first half output was just eight points. The 24-8 first half deficit was just too much to overcome, even though La Veta did rally to win the second half by eight points 20-12. La Veta is 2-3 on the season and will go on break until a January 9 game against the combined team of Kim/Branson. La Veta 2 6 10 10 28 Antonito 6 18 5 7 36

Redskin boys best start in years

by David High

ANTONITO — Friday’s non-conference game against Antonito on the road couldn’t have been more exciting for those in attendance. Antonito scored first but fell way behind after that initial tally. To their credit the Trojans bounced back to stay in the game that ended up tied five times during it course. Redskin senior Carson Miller went off, scoring 10-19 from the field, to total 24 points on the game. That explosion by Miller and a 10-point output by Ian Miller salted the win away late in the contest, giving the Redskins the win and a 3-2 start for the La Veta bunch. The La Veta five will be back in action on their home court after the holiday break with a game January 9 against Kim/Branson.

Chenoweth Award nominations due

by Susan Harris

TRINIDAD — Have you ever wished you could honor someone in Trinidad who is a particularly wonderful citizen? You know the kind–caring, generous, honest, responsible—someone who is an asset to the community. Are you getting ideas? The Trinidad Chamber of Commerce is accepting nominations for an award that does just that. It’s named for Judge John Edgar Chenoweth. Perhaps you aren’t sure who he was and what kind of honorees would suit his legacy.

John Edgar Chenoweth was born in Trinidad in 1897, attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, and worked on the railroad and in a mercantile. By 1925, he was admitted to the bar and began to practice law. After serving as assistant district attorney, he became a county judge and in 1940, he won election to the U.S. House of Representatives where he served several terms.

But his being a popular politician and active contributor to the community weren’t the only reasons people remember him with respect. According to a woman who worked with him but prefers to go unnamed, people called him Trinidad’s Mister Rogers. He was an upbeat gentleman who, no matter how far he traveled or how much acclaim he won, never forgot his roots or the people back home. He treated everyone the same, regardless of their religions or personalities.

He and his wife Ruth Olivia Crews Chenoweth had five children that he adored. He died in 1986 after an accident on La Veta Pass.

Judge Chenoweth’s footprints are difficult to fill, but luckily Trinidad runs on the energy of many extraordinary people. Recent recipients of the award include Bob Holder and Lou Simpleman, Cy Michaels, Jay Cimino, and Laura DeBella. Anyone can nominate.

All you have to do is drop by the Chamber of Commerce Office at 136 W. Main Street, Monday through Friday, 10-3:00 pm to pick up a nomination form. Or you can call (719-846-9285) to have a form emailed to you. Nominations close on December 27, 2019, so don’t delay. The recipient will be honored at a banquet at Mt. Carmel on January 25, 2020. Don’t let the best of Trinidad go unnoticed.
