TV Rescan Media Advisory

SOUTHERN COLORADO — A TV Rescan is required for Antenna TV Viewers in Colorado Springs-Pueblo viewing area. The rescan is required due to a TV station frequency change that occurred on Thursday, Feb. 27, in Colorado Springs-Pueblo. TV viewers who receive free, over-the-air local TV will need to rescan their TV to continue receiving local channels, including emergency and weather alerts. The FCC is requiring nearly 1,000 TV stations to change frequencies in order to pro- vide more channels for wireless broadband services. The TV rescan requirement takes effect immediately.

More information is available at TVAnswers.org. Sign up to receive free email and text alerts at www.tvanswers.org/signup, and to be notified when a rescan is required.

John Galusha for Huerfano County Commissioner

HUERFANO COUNTY — I am pleased to announce my candidacy for Huerfano County Commissioner. Some of you may know me from the weekly Huerfano County Commissioner meetings.

I was born and raised on the St. Charles Mesa in Pueblo County. My grandfather and father were also born in St. Charles near where the cement plant is today. Many of my great uncles worked in the coal mines and on the railroads in Huerfano County.

I have worked as the Huerfano County Administrator for over 13 years and have created many improvements in our county, including the courthouse restoration, the new Judicial Building and the chip and seal of Toltec and Navajo subdivision roads. I have worked in the trenches to make things happen in our county. I have written and assisted in over $20 million in successful grants to benefit of our county. I have served on the boards of several non-profits and committees and have a good understanding of the needs of our county.

My goals include helping the next county administrator transition into the position without losing the momentum we have in the county. First of all, I will help in writing grants, introducing him or her to people who make the decisions at the state and federal levels, and insights into the budget process.

Secondly, I believe we can tackle the current addiction problem in our county by taking a holistic, strong family approach. We can’t expect our schools to address this problem by themselves. We must offer opportunities for parents with their children to help break the cycle.

And finally, I will stimulate economic growth by creating jobs, helping existing businesses grow, and increase the housing availability throughout the county.

I have recently submitted my resignation to the commissioners and hope to further my service to our county and communities as county commissioner. I will be hosting several meet and greet events at various locations in the county. Let’s get together and talk. You can call me at 719-248-4541 or email galushaforcommissioner@gmail.com.

Mike Clark and the Sugar Sounds

As Clark used his feet as a professional mountain biker, so too he uses them on an array of electronic effects pedals that make his guitar emulate an orchestra Photo by Chip Shirley

by Chip Shirley

TRINIDAD — Drinkers and diners at the Las Animas Grill in Trinidad, CO, on Saturday night, Feb. 15, were treated to two excellent sets of original music at no charge, thanks to owner and frequent gadfly Jay Gonzalez and the band.

Mike Clark & the Sugar Sounds hail from all over Colorado. Clark, who is the lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist, was born in Hugo, Colo, and now works out of Pueblo; while drummer Robin Chestnut came all the way down from Boulde.. Here in Trinidad, they met up with Ben Gallagher, who rounds out the trio on electric piano and organ.

These are three highly skilled musicians, and, as they say, one thinks they could play the veritable phone book and make it quite entertaining. The good-sized crowd was also treated to some brand new tunes that had just been worked out by the group on Saturday.

Mike Clark and the Sugar Sounds are clearly rhythm and blues and soul oriented, but you can definitely hear touches of jazz in the arrangements and the music to a degree is informed by modern alternative rock. Some of the material sounded more southern California than southern Colorado. At times the classic 70’s band Redbone (Come and get Your Love) seemed to show influence and at other times the classic 60’s group The Doors came to mind.

Vocally, Clark is reminiscent of the late-great Paul Pena, who wrote and recorded “Jet Airliner” (before Steve Miller had the big hit with it). Throughout their performance, the beat and dynamics of MCSS never failed to keep the ears hungry for more. All three musicians added in on vocals and at one point (on an original) the group chorus of “Yeah” was reminiscent of Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit. Another new song, “Make it easy on me” touched on the Afro-Pop of Paul Simon’s “You can call me Al”.

Clark’s mother sang in church, and that was his prime (low-key) musical influence growing up. That is part of the reason he never took his musical aspirations seriously until he was 30 years old. Prior to that, he had worked as a professional mountain biker in obstacle course ‘bike trials’ and today he still works a ‘day job’ as a land surveyor.

If Mike Clark is to get his turn at the top 40 it could be on another new tune the group debuted at the LA Grill Saturday night. Listen for “Burning Bridges” and lookout for Mike Clark and the Sugar Sounds!

Vietnam Veterans Memorial moving wall coming to Walsenburg

by Brian Manning

WALSENBURG — The Moving Wall, which is a half-size replica of the Washington, DC, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, will be in Walsenburg from June 18-22, 2020, at the request of American Legion Post 16 and Auxiliary in Walsenburg. John Devitt, a Vietnam Veteran, felt that he needed to share his experience with those who did not have the opportunity to go to Washington. This wall has been touring the country for more than 30 years.

The event will take place at the Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center, which also houses the Veterans Community Center. This way residents of the home will have access to the Wall.

While on display, the wall will be accessible 24 hours a day to accommodate those who want to visit the wall at a specific time. This will be a very solemn occasion for some, so please respect people who might be grieving and want privacy.

Fundraising will be necessary to raise money for bringing the Wall to Walsenburg, expense for setting the wall, building a platform, painting posters, advertising, renting chairs and canopies for older visitors. All money raised will only be used for this event and Post 16 is a 501(c)19 so donations are deductible.

Post 16 reminds all veterans that they are having open enrollment and anyone that has served in the military can join with no restrictions on the time they served.  They welcome new members.

This is an exciting event that has the potential for bringing thousands to the area. Many organizations and people from the community will be involved as volunteers to help with this project. It will take hard work and good planning to make this event successful.

There will be more information soon and a Facebook page and a GoFundMe page will be established very soon. Anyone looking for information now should call Adjutant/Financial Officer Dave Rogers at 719-738-9965.
