Community Health Needs Assessment

LAS ANIMAS COUNTY  — Mt. San Rafael is working to complete their Community Health Needs Assessment; an important tool, completed every three years, that identifies key health needs and issues through systematic, comprehensive data collection and analysis.
A Community Health Needs Assessment gives organizations, like Mt. San Rafael Hospital, comprehensive information about the community’s current health status, needs, and issues. This information helps develop a community health improvement plan by justifying how and where resources should be allocated to best meet community needs.
To assist with this process is a community survey.  The survey asks about health, current health practices, and impressions of the overall health of the Trinidad community.  The survey is available in both English and Spanish and in paper form or electronic. To complete the survey electronically, use the links below.

Philosophy Café

OUR WORLD  —  The Trinidad Library is once again hosting the Philosophy Café. This month, the topic is “Ontology in the Digital Age.”
Ontology is the branch of Philosophy that studies concepts such as existence, being, becoming, and reality. It is sometimes referred to as the science of being and belongs to the major branch of philosophy known as metaphysics.
Philosopher and metaphysician Rene Descartes is noted for the expression “Cogito Ergo Sum,” which is commonly translated as “I think, therefore I am.” In the era of social media, we might rephrase that sentiment as: “I tweet, therefore I am, or I am viral therefore I exist.” Lots of food for thought here.
So log onto your computer from 5:00p.m. – 6:00p.m. on Monday, July 12th and participate in some lively discussion. This is a Zoom meeting and you must register to attend, so if you are interested, email Tom Potter at tom.potter@trinidad.co.gov to receive a  link to the registration site.

New exhibits, right on time: Three shows at History Colorado Center

OUT OF OUR WORLD — The History Colorado Center in downtown Denver is opening three new shows in the coming weeks, so if you’re looking for a bit of a vacation and want to go someplace that values safety in the time of COVID, you might consider checking these out.
Presented in English and Spanish, Borderlands of Southern Colorado explores the shifting geopolitical history of an area known for unique and resilient forms of cultural connection. This exhibit opens Feb. 2 on the 173rd anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Centering Chicano, Indigenous, and Mestizo perspectives, Borderlands reflects more than seven years of research and collaboration and evolves from two ongoing sister exhibits in Pueblo and Trinidad.
E Pluribus Unum features one of History Colorado’s most treasured artifacts, the priceless and rarely seen Appomattox Inkwell. This Inkwell was used to write an end to the Civil War. As Americans approach inauguration day, E Pluribus Unum is available for viewing now through Jan. 20th.
Apron Chronicles is a traveling exhibition that will complete its remarkable sixteen-year journey as a cultural phenomenon with its final showing at History Colorado. The exhibition features photography, personal narratives, and one-of-a-kind aprons that hold histories from the kitchen and far beyond. Told from the healing perspective of connectivity, Apron Chronicles explores humanity through aprons of hope, survival, achievement, regret, and liberation from Jan. 23 through May 9.

Matching grant donations and  volunteers needed for the Fox Theatre!

WALSENBURG — Our historic building needs help!  We need to make a few repairs. We need a new roof.  We need brickwork. We need proper drainage around the foundation.  We need to secure the marquee to the building.
Our trusty volunteers are wore out! They save the day on a regular basis.  It’s time to give them a break and make much needed repairs.  We’ve experienced water lines exploding on Christmas, basement floods during community flood meetings, roof leaks, and cold movie screenings.  Our time to fix these occurences is now!
The Fox Theatre was awarded a $200,000 grant from DOLA.  We have to match those funds with another $200,000. We were awarded $50,000 from the State Historic Fund and $10,000 from the Robert Hoag Rawlings Foundation.  We’ve requested another $100,000 from two other foundations.
We need cash to unlock the DOLA grant.  We received $25,000 from resident and philanthropist George Birrer to purchase the empty lot next to the theatre, but if needed, he has permitted us to move the funds into this project.  Our goal is $30,000 cash.  We have to raise these funds by July 2021, or we will lose the DOLA grant.  Any monetary donations help!
Our board members are committed and work well together.  However, they have all extended their time on the board.  Therefore, we are looking for fresh recruits.  Board service is minimal; however, we are trying to raise a lot of money, so folks who are connected and enjoy fundraising would be a perfect fit!
Please contact Mike at 719-890-4292 or email him at mike@foxtheatrewalsenburg.org to learn more about volunteer opportunities.

Expect CPW helicopter flights in December

OUR WORLD — Beginning Nov. 30, Colorado Parks and Wildlife biologists will assess deer and elk populations by conducting low-altitude helicopter flights in southeast Colorado, west of Interstate 25.
Then, in mid- to late-December, biologists will launch similar helicopter flights in the southeastern plains of Colorado to the east of I-25.  Southeast Region residents can expect low-flying helicopters that spend a small amount of time in a specific area and then move on searching for more deer, elk, moose and bighorn sheep.

The flights beginning Nov. 30 will target Park and Fremont counties before sweeping into El Paso and Teller counties, north of U.S. Highway 50, and then through Lake and Chaffee counties.  Then the biologists will fly south through Pueblo, Custer, Huerfano and Las Animas counties.

The eastern flight plan calls for helicopters to tour along the South Republican River drainage from Flagler to the Kansas state line. Then the helicopters will turn south into Kit Carson and Cheyenne counties followed by tours of Kiowa, Prowers and Baca counties.

The helicopter surveys will conclude with flights along the Arkansas River from the Kansas state line to Colorado Highway 71 and southwest along the Purgatoire River.

If the weather permits, CPW biologists hope to conclude their herd assessment flights by early January.  For more information on CPW’s wildlife population objectives, visit cpw.state.co.us/ThingsToDo/pages/HerdManagementPlans.aspx
