Santa reads in Walsenburg and Trinidad to Fight Cancer!

OUR WORLD —  The good folks over at ROAR for Relay for Life have gotten in touch with Santa this year and have convinced him to come on out to Southern Colorado twice this December to read to and take photos with kids as part of a fundraiser to help fight cancer.
Santa will read Twas the Night Before Christmas and kids can get cookies and hot chocolate, a goodie bag, and a photo with Santa for only $10.
Santa will be in Walsenburg at Colorado Farm Bureau Insurance on Saturday, Dec. 4th from 3-5 p.m.
He will then visit Trinidad on Sunday, Dec. 18th at Corradino Auto Body at 124 N. Maple St. from 3-5 p.m.

Ghostbusters: Afterlif at the Fox in Walsenburg

WALSENBURG – This weekend’s movie is “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” rated PG-13 with a runtime of 2 hours and 4 minutes.
Stars Carrie Coon, Paul Rudd, and Finn Wolfhard
When a single mother and her two children move to a new town, they soon discover they have a connection to the original Ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind.
Movie showtimes are Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 3 p.m.
Movie ticket prices are $7 for adults, $6 for students and teachers, $5 for children (ages 5 to 12).

Baked Goods and Craft Sale to support Hospital Auxiliary

WALSENBURG – This Friday, Dec. 3rd, from around 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., there will be a baked goods and craft sale at the hospital gift shop. Proceeds will go to support the hospital, so come on out and do some good while you fill your belly!

Grinch Day at LVPL

LA VETA — Saturday, Dec. 4th is Grinch Day! Celebrate it this year with a collaboration between the La Veta Public Library and Two Peaks Fitness. Join us anytime between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the La Veta Community Center for Grinch-themed activities, Grinch bingo, and a special appearance from Santa Claus for photos at 10 a.m.

LA VETA — Start the evening off right on Saturday Dec. 4th at 4:30 p.m. (before the Art Walk downtown) by showing your holiday spirit and joining us for our traditional tree lighting and Christmas caroling in “Charlie Park”. Hope to see you there!

Holiday Culinary Celebration

LA VETA — On Saturday, Dec. 4th, from 5-7:30 p.m., there will be a Holiday Culinary Celebration taking place across La Veta! Stroll among 8 galleries and shops in La Veta, enjoying delicious eats accompanied by live seasonal music while providing support for local arts programs!
The La Veta Creative District is taking over managing the annual Holiday Arts Fundraiser. There are several new shops included this year: H’s Place, Marta Moore at the Salon, Crafted in Colorado, and Silver Shoe with a “pop up” shop called Tradition Makers Market joining Shalawalla Batik Studio, SPACe Gallery, La Veta School of the Arts, and Artisans on Main. Each location will have food and liquid refreshments. If you can’t make it, please consider donating to the fundraiser. Money raised goes toward several arts programs in La Veta. It also pays for the signs on Hwy 160 for “Fine Art Galleries”.
Each venue will hold a drawing for a prize of the gallery’s choosing. Tickets are $25 per person and are now available at H’s Place on Main Street, Artisans on Main, SPACe Gallery on Ryus. Tickets can also be purchased on line through the SPACe Gallery web site. There are a limited number of tickets available so please plan to purchase your tickets early.

Traditions Makers’ Market

LA VETA — Huajatolla Heritage Foundation is partnering with the La Veta Creative District in creating an event showcasing several exceptional artists and craftspeople in our community. The event will be held from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4th at 225 S. Main in La Veta.
Arthur ShortBull, Kate Wootton, Lisa Dasenbrock, Frog Hollow Brooms, Raymond Tenorio (from Santo Domingo Pueblo), the Sandys Squared, Charity, Ava Clark and John Costea will all be sharing their quality handcrafted goods. The Falcon Cheesecake Food Truck will be serving from 10-4. Santa will be around. Michael Rael, talented musician from Questa will provide live music from 3-6. We will also participate in the private party Culinary Celebration from 5-7. Come get the finest in local gifts for everyone on your list.

Huajatolla Heritage Foundation gift drive for Native American youth, elders

LA VETA — Huajatolla Heritage Foundation is once again partnering with the non-profit, One Nation Walking Together to share the bounties of the Holiday season with Native youth and elders. In addition to gifts, your financial help is needed to provide a range of programs, services, and crisis interventions for Native Americans- the most underserved and misrepresented group in the U.S. Indigenous people experience higher levels of poverty, hunger, homelessness, and unemployment than any other demographic.
At the Dec. 4 Traditions Makers’ Market at 225 S. Main in La Veta, we will be collecting new (unwrapped) toys or gifts for both the children and the elders. Although not normally thought of for the holiday season, any cleaning supplies or hygiene items are very much appreciated. (We will not be collecting food, clothing, or household items at this time.) And perhaps even more important, if you would want to make a cash donation, it will be matched the IndieGives program if donated prior to Dec. 31.

4th Annual Holiday Giving Celebration

HUERFANO – Spanish Peaks Business Alliance would like to invite you to the 4th Annual Holiday Giving Celebration! Just like last year, we are hosting this event virtually and donations will be accepted through our website, spba.huerfano.org, starting Dec. 6th. We will host a virtual Mixer on Dec. 14th at 6p.m. with an ugly sweater contest, so gather your friends for a watch party if you fancy!
A full list of participating nonprofits and what they are working on will be available on our website from Dec. 6th through Dec. 14th. You will be able to contribute right from the website and receive a tax deductible receipt from SPBA. We hope you will participate however you are able to this year, even if you just pop in to the online mixer for holiday cheer!

Presentation of Entrepreneurship Action Plan

WALSENBURG –On Monday Dec. 6, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. the County will host a presentation and discussion of the Entrepreneurship Action Plan and Retail Business Incubator Feasibility Analysis. The Meeting will be held in the meeting room of the Huerfano County Community Center, 928 Russell Street.

The county received grant funding from the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment Lives Empowered program and hired RPI Consulting to assist with this important project. RPI Consulting will present the Entrepreneurship Action Plan and results from the Retail Business Incubator Feasibility Analysis followed by Q&A and group discussion.

LA VETA — Do you want to learn how to properly prune trees? Do you want to help improve and maintain La Veta’s “urban” forest at the park and along the streets? Please join the PTB members for upcoming pruning work sessions on Dec 7, Dec 14 and Dec 21. We will meet at the Town’s Maintenance Building just west of the Post Office at 8 a.m.

LA VETA — La Veta Public Library is hosting a “tasty” event on Dec. 9th at 2p.m. We are inviting the community to come and share their favorite holiday cookie recipe(s). Ideally, if you bring your favorite cookies, along with the recipe, we can have a cookie exchange! It is so fun to share our favorite recipes and usually there is a great story behind them. Mitzi (known for all her great recipes) will compile them into the beginnings of our Cuchara Valley Recipe Legacy Cookbook and make it available to share. Please come!

TRINIDAD — This year, give a local senior citizen a holiday memory they’ll treasure. Trinidad State High School Basketball Tournament is back!

TRINIDAD — The 85th annual Trinidad State Invitational will be held at Scott Gym on Dec. 1, 2, 3 and 4. We have teams coming to play from Trinidad, La Junta, Hoehne, Primero, Kim, Raton, Springer and Des Moines.

Corazón de Trinidad presents the Author Market Place!

TRINIDAD — Following the successful three-month exhibit of Better Angels, The Firefighters of 9/11, the Creative District now brings the AUTHOR MARKET PLACE to Trinidad. On Sat. Dec. 4th from 12-6p.m., local poets and writers will be featured in the Creative District’s Gallery at the Commons, 210 West Main. The event will allow visitors to meet authors and poets, hear them read from current work, have the authors sign books purchased, and quiz them about how and why they do what they do.
Among those featured will be poets Kate Klingston, Michele McDannold, and Hilary Depolo. All authors will be available for a Q&A dialogue regarding the art of writing.

Local authors book signing at Carnegie Public Library

TRINIDAD — The Trinidad Carnegie Public Library is excited to host a book signing for three local authors on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 4th, from 3 – 5 p.m., upstairs in the library’s main room. The authors include Richard Trice from Raton, and Trinidad residents, MaryJo Dawson and Adam Gaffen.
Richard Trice and his wife of 43 years live in Raton where he now spends his time writing music and historical novels. His Trent Carter series follow an aging, disillusioned, and damaged rural detective who often finds his investigations rooted firmly in history. And he talks with ghosts. Adam Gaffen and his family: wife, five kids, five dogs and five cats, recently moved to Trinidad for a change from the long Northeast winters. He is an avid reader and prolific author. His current project is The Cassidy Chronicles, a series of science fiction novels centering on the intriguing adventures of two strong heroines, Aiyana Cassidy and Kendra Foster-Briggs, set in post-modern America.
MaryJo Dawson grew up in the Midwest and practiced as a registered nurse in nine states before moving to Trinidad with her husband. MaryJo’s experiences as a nurse provide the blueprint for female sleuth, Sally Nimitz, the protagonist in her novels. To date, MaryJo has released eight books in the Sally Nimitz Mystery series. Readers of cozy amateur sleuth whodunits will love these stories.

Monoclonoal Antibody Treatment Bus

TRINIDAD — The health department has worked with CDPHE on securing a Monoclonal Antibody Treatment Bus.
The CDPHE monoclonal antibody bus will be located at 412 Benedicta Ave, Trinidad, CO 81082 during the following dates and times:
Wednesday, Dec. 1 – Saturday, Dec. 4 from 8 a.m.. to 4 p.m. and
Monday, Dec. 6 – Saturday, Dec. 11 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Depending on local case rates and other factors, this period may be extended, but we are currently scheduling two weeks at a time.

12 Books of Christmas Scavenger Hunt

TRINIDAD — From Dec. 6 – 22, Carnegie Public Library will be holding a Christmas Scavenger Hunt! Here’s how it works.
1. Pick up a scavenger hunt bookmark from the Carnegie Public Library or a participating business.
2. Using the clues on the bookmark, locate a hidden Christmas book in each participating business. (The book remains at each location) (Don’t tell your friends where they are hidden.)
3. Once you have located all of the books, bring the completed bookmark back to the library for a prize.
Participating businesses are the Trinidad Gift Shop, Chronicle News, Fishers Peak Outfitters, Curly’s Beads, Noah’s Ark, Shirley’s Thrift Store, Perkatory Coffee House, Colie’s Cakes and Pastries, Books and More, Mutiny Café, the Art Cottage, and of course the Carnegie Public Library.

Annual Firemen’s Toy Drive takes off in Trinidad

TRINIDAD — The annual Trinidad Firemen’s toy Drive is a go again! Applications for the toy drive can be picked up at the utilities department at Trinidad City Hall, 135 N. Animas St; at the Trinidad Department of Human Services, 219 S. Chestnut St; and at the Trinidad Housing Authority, 422 E. First St.
Applications are due back by Dec. 10, and can be mailed to PO Box 900, Trinidad, CO 81082, or dropped off at either fire station, at 1102 Nevada Ave or at 1605 Santa Fe Trail.
Applicants must live inside the city limits of Trinidad to qualify. Pick up of toys will be Dec. 18 from 9am-6pm at 149 E. Main St in Trinidad.

The Carnegie Public Library is celebrating by hosting an event on Dec. 10th at the Trinidad Community Center at 1309 Beshoar Avenue. Come play with our STEAM kits and learn about Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics.
There are two time blocks to come participate, depending on your student’s age. K-2nd Grade will meet from 10a.m. – 12p.m., and 3rd-5th Grade will meet from 1p.m. – 3p.m.

RATON — Raton Fire & emergency Services is teaming up with Raton Team Builders to gather names of children ages Newborn to 17 to have toys delivered to them.

OUR WORLD — All Americans are encouraged to reserve some of their holiday shopping time and money for Small Business Saturday, November 27, the day after Black Friday and two days before Cyber Monday.
“Shopping small is a good thing to do all year round, and this Saturday is a good reminder why,” said Tony Gagliardi, Colorado state director for the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), America’s largest small-business association.
“It’s a great time to reacquaint yourself with the small businesses around you, the owners who gave most of us our first jobs, and your neighbors whom you might run into. This is a grim time for small businesses, so, as never before, every little bit helps. If your local small businesses can ring up just a tiny bit more in sales, that could be the margin of difference between staying open for business or having to close up shop for good, the margin of difference between being able to keep an employee or having to let him or her go.”

HUERFANO — On Nov. 30th at 6p.m., the Huerfano County 4-H Fair Board will have its annual election of board members at the regular meeting at the county fairgrounds in La Veta. If you have any interest in working with the 4-H and FFA youth in the county, please join us!

Huajatolla Heritage Foundation gift drive for Native American youth, elders

LA VETA — Huajatolla Heritage Foundation is once again partnering with the non-profit, One Nation Walking Together headquartered in Colorado Springs to share the bounties of the Holiday season with deserving Native youth and elders. In addition to gifts, your financial help is greatly needed to continue providing a broad range of culturally appropriate programs, services, and crisis interventions for Native Americans- the most underserved and misrepresented group in the U.S. Indigenous people experience higher levels of poverty, hunger, homelessness, and unemployment than any other demographic.
At the Dec. 4th Traditions Makers’ Market at 225 S. Main in La Veta, we will be collecting new (unwrapped) toys or gifts for both the children and the elders. Although not normally thought of for the holiday season, any cleaning supplies or hygiene items are very much appreciated. (We will not be collecting food, clothing, or household items at this time.) The Rifters perform at the La Veta Mercantile

LA VETA — The Rifters formed in 2002 in the fertile and creative music scene of Taos, New Mexico from members of two popular bands already active in the area. Jim Bradley and Don Richmond of Hired Hands, and Rod Taylor of the Rounders, who had all known one another for years playing in the acoustic dance-oriented Americana music scene of northern New Mexico, decided to join forces to form The Rifters. Putting out more music than it seems should be right for three guys on stage, the Rifters employ a wide range of acoustic and electric instruments, combined with soaring three-part harmonies, to provide a mesmerizing variety of music from driving blue-grama-grass to ethereal desert beauty. Huerfano Memorial Auxiliary needs volunteers

WALSENBURG –The Huerfano Memorial Auxiliary meets at the Hospital Auxiliary on the second Wednesday of every month at 2 p.m. In addition, they run the hospital gift shop, from which all proceeds go to benefit the hospital. The gift shop is open 5 days a week from 10a.m.-3p.m., but right now it is held down only by four or five women. They need some volunteers to take on some shifts and benefit the hospital community.

Presented by Bonnie jw Riley, who has 33 years of experience working in fields related to growing older, including nursing homes, assisted living, HUD housing, active retirement communities, and Elderhostel. She is the founder of the lifelong learning institute PILLAR in Colorado Springs.
Her program, The Heart of Life, seeks to provide an insightful, interactive, and intimate exploration of the realities of aging and the role a sense of purpose plays in transcending challenging circumstances. The goal is to learn to live from a place of the heart where we truly find meaning and purpose. The class is limited in size and pre-registration is required. There are bumps in the road but Shirley perseveres in her tasks with the help of a super-cool steampunk swan.

Fort Wootton Veterans Pearl Harbor Gun Show

TRINIDAD — On Saturday and Sunday Dec. 4-5, there will be a gun show held at Fort Wootton Veterans’ Memorial Square at 204 S. Chestnut St., in Trinidad, with all the trappings of a gun show – guns, knives, crafts, militaria.
There will be daily drawings with tickets available at the door all day. Drawings will be held at 2p.m. & 5p.m.

CPW seeks public feedback on big game hunting license distribution

OUR WORLD —  Colorado Parks and Wildlife is considering changes to policies and regulations that could potentially impact how big game hunting licenses are distributed in the state. CPW is currently seeking public input from resident and nonresident big game hunters and stakeholders through an online comment form, followed by a survey and public meetings next year. The feedback will help the Parks and Wildlife Commission and the agency determine if the current policies need to be revised.

Creativity and Alzheimer’s Disease Presentation at La Veta Library

LA VETA — November is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, a time to heighten awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and show support for the more than 6.2 million Americans living with this devastating diagnosis. Even more staggering is the number of caregivers, loved ones and friends that are also affected. And we all have nagging questions wondering is misplacing our keys is the beginning of that slippery slope!
Sandy Dolak, RN is partnering with Mt. Rose Health Center Palliative Care and Hospice, the Walsenburg Library and the La Veta Library to present a most informative program about the understanding of the disease as well as most effective methods of interacting with those affected. She will be using materials presented by nationally recognized educator Amy Mathews. Amy has worked exclusively in the field of Alzheimer’s and related dementia disorders for the past 30 years. Sandy will also share her insight of many years of interest and a brief sharing of the role of creativity in working with this special
population.
The program will be 2 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 18th upstairs at the La Veta Library and then repeated at 2 p.m., Monday, Nov. 22nd at the Walsenburg Library. Please join us for this learning experience.

There are several new shops included this year: H’s Place, Marta Moore at the Salon, Crafted in Colorado, and Silver Shoe with a “pop up” shop called Tradition Makers Market joining Shalawalla Batik Studio, SPACe Gallery, La Veta School of the Arts, and Artisans on Main. Each location will have food and liquid refreshments. If you can’t make it, please consider donating to the fundraiser. Money raised goes toward several arts programs in La Veta. It also pays for the signs on Hwy 160 for “Fine Art Galleries”.
Each venue will hold a drawing for a prize of the gallery’s choosing. Tickets are $25 per person and are now available at H’s Place on Main Street, Artisans on Main, SPACe Gallery on Ryus. Fishers Peak Plan and Trinidad Traffic Study Open House and Discussion

TRINIDAD — On Thursday, November 18th from 5-7p.m., there will be two simultaneous meetings at the Trinidad Community Center of members of the project teams for both the Fishers Peak State Park Master Plan and the City of Trinidad Traffic Study. For the public’s convenience, the two meetings will be held in adjacent rooms at the Community Center, and participants will have an opportunity to visit both meetings during the duration of the time. Light refreshments will be provided. Masks will be required to attend.
Learn about the Trinidad Traffic Study seeking to identify improvements that can be a catalyst for improved traffic flow, including a long-term investment
plan for highway and road safety, bicycle /multi-use trail, and transit. The study, in cooperation with the Colorado Department of Transportation, will support the future conceptual design, funding, scheduling, and overall recommendations.
The Fishers Peak State Park Master Plan team is excited to present the data collected and draft concepts for the Park. The Master Plan project
information will:
• Describe draft recreation and conservation concepts for the Park
• Answer questions from the public related to draft concepts
• Gather public feedback as it relates to draft concepts
• Provide information on next steps and finalization of Master Plan

Book signing for Melva Nolan at Trinidad Library
TRINIDAD — Please come in to the library’s main room on Friday afternoon, November 19th, from 4 – 6p.m. to meet local author and blogger Melva Nolan. Melva has just published a book titled, Pieces from the Past: Letters from Camp Trinidad Prisoners of War. Her fascinating book touches on quilting, cooking and prisoners of war. German POWs from Camp Trinidad were eventually allowed to work on various projects outside the camp. Their favorite was the Schleich family sugar beet farm near Model, where they were well fed by Melva’s grandmother, Katherine Schleich, and, in return, worked hard for Katherine’s husband, Phillip. When they were repatriated to war-devastated Germany, they wrote letters of thanks and reminiscence to the Schleich’s.
Melva inherited a collection of quilt patterns from Grandma Schleich, and on her blog, MelvaLovesScraps, began a series of posts matching quilt patterns with these poignant letters. Over 6000 people viewed those posts, received quilt patterns, and read Melva’s fascinating Schleich family lore. It was so popular, Melva decided to write the book. After a formal announcement and presentation to the Trinidad Historical Society last week, she will now be at the Trinidad Carnegie Public Library at 202 N Animas to sell and sign books, and answer questions. We invite you to come to the library to meet Melva and see her new book!

“better angels: the firefighters of 9/11” show in Trinidad

TRINIDAD — It’s not too late to see the “better angels: the firefighters of 9/11” display in Trinidad.
Coinciding with the 20th anniversary of 9/11, the show is on display at the Corazón de Trinidad Creative District commons at 210 W. Main until November 20th.
The show consists of 343 individual oil paintings of the New York City firefighters who died on 9/11. Each firefighter’s portrait is painted intimately onto a small burned block of wood. Assembled, this large multi-part work is 4’ high by 21’ long.
The artist and creator, Dawn Siebel, lived in Manhattan for 22 years before moving to Colorado. Siebel was living in Boulder on September 11th, 2001, and twelve days later when The New York Times printed a two-page spread with all 343 firefighter photographs, the better angels project was born. Siebel spent more than 3000 hours over the next six years to create the paintings, beginning with cutting and then burning the blocks of baltic birch on which the portraits are painted.
The show is open Wednesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

Main Street LIVE presents the 12 Days of Christmas

TRINIDAD — This Dec., Main Street LIVE proudly presents The 12 Days of Christmas, a Holiday Comedy by Renee Calarco.
Christmas is just around the corner and Shirley the Partridge is nervous because it’s her first time carrying out the ancient family tradition of gathering the French hens, the Calling Birds, oh everyone!
There are bumps in the road but Shirley perseveres in her tasks with the help of a super-cool steampunk swan.
This holiday comedy is appropriate for all ages and will be playing at Main Street LIVE on Dec. 3rd – 5th and Dec. 10th – 12th. Showtimes are at 7p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 2p.m. on Sundays. Box office opens one hour prior to curtain. Tickets are $15 for adults, $5 for youth 17 and under.

Fort Wootton Veterans Pearl Harbor Gun Show

TRINIDAD — On Saturday and Sunday Dec. 4-5, there will be a gun show held at Fort Wootton Veterans’ Memorial Square at 204 S. Chestnut St., in Trinidad, with all the trappings of a gun show – guns, knives, crafts, militaria.
There will be daily drawings with tickets available at the door all day. Drawings will be held at 2 & 5 p.m.

USDA Forest Service waives fees for Veterans Day

OUR WORLD —  The USDA Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Region, will waive fees, where charged, at day‐use recreation sites in Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota, Kansas and the Bighorn, Medicine Bow and Shoshone National Forests in Wyoming in honor of Veterans Day, Thursday, Nov. 11th.
The Forest Service offers several fee‐free days annually to encourage Americans to explore the outdoors and visit their public lands. The fee waiver includes many Forest Service picnic areas, boat launches, trailheads, and visitor centers. Fees for camping, cabin rentals, or other permits still apply. Fees will continue to be charged at Forest Service standard amenity fee recreation sites operated by concessionaires, unless individual managers choose to participate.

Colorado Springs EV Club visiting Walsenburg for EVOverload21

WALSENBURG -After the recent launch of four new publicly accessible electric vehicle charge ports at the EV Trail charging station at George’s Drive Inn, the Colorado Springs EV Club has scheduled a club drive to the station on Saturday, November 13, 2021.
The event is being dubbed EVOverload21 because one goal is to demonstrate that overloading the available charge ports will not negatively impact any other San Isabel Electric Association customers. There are six total public charge ports in Walsenburg, including two at the South Central Council of Governments office. All available ports will be in use starting at around 11:30a.m.
“It’s likely that the population of electric vehicles in Walsenburg will double or triple for a couple hours,” said Curtis Claar, founder of EV Trail. “We needed to test the new chargers for maximum load and with the CSEVC participating, local residents will have a chance to see multiple electric vehicles and meet with their owners.”
The new charging station at George’s Drive Inn features a CHAdeMO plug, a CCS plug, and two J1772 plugs, allowing all electric cars sold in the US to be charged. EV Trail is offering free charging all day on Saturday, November 13.

Creativity and Alzheimer’s Disease Presentation at La Veta Library

LA VETA — November is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, a time to heighten awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and show support for the more than 6.2 million Americans living with this devastating diagnosis. Even more staggering is the number of caregivers, loved ones and friends that are also affected. And we all have nagging questions wondering is misplacing our keys is the beginning of that slippery slope!
Sandy Dolak, RN is partnering with Mt. Rose Health Center Palliative Care and Hospice, the Walsenburg Library and the La Veta Library to present a most informative program about the understanding of the disease as well as most effective methods of interacting with those affected. She will be using materials presented by nationally recognized educator Amy Mathews. Amy has worked exclusively in the field of Alzheimer’s and related dementia disorders for the past 30 years. Sandy will also share her insight of many years of interest and a brief sharing of the role of creativity in working with this special
population.
The program will be 2p.m., Thursday November 18th upstairs at the La Veta Library and then repeated at 2p.m., Monday November 22nd at the Walsenburg Library. Please join us for this learning experience.

WALSENBURG –The Huerfano Memorial Auxiliary meets at the Hospital Auxiliary on the second Wednesday of every month at 2p.m. In addition, they run the hospital gift shop, from which all proceeds go to benefit the hospital. The gift shop is open 5 days a week from 10a.m.-3p.m., but right now it is held down only by four or five women. They need some volunteers to take on some shifts and benefit the hospital community.

TRINIDAD — It’s not too late to see the “better angels: the firefighters of 9/11” display in Trinidad.
Coinciding with the 20th anniversary of 9/11, the show is on display at the Corazón de Trinidad Creative District commons at 210 W. Main until November 20th.
The show consists of 343 individual oil paintings of the New York City firefighters who died on 9/11. Each firefighter’s portrait is painted intimately onto a small burned block of wood. Assembled, this large multi-part work is 4’ high by 21’ long.
The artist and creator, Dawn Siebel, lived in Manhattan for 22 years before moving to Colorado. CPW seeks public feedback on big game hunting license distribution

OUR WORLD —  Colorado Parks and Wildlife is considering changes to policies and regulations that could potentially impact how big game hunting licenses are distributed in the state. CPW is currently seeking public input from resident and nonresident big game hunters and stakeholders through an online comment form, followed by a survey and public meetings next year. The feedback will help the Parks and Wildlife Commission and the agency determine if the current policies need to be revised.
Public interested in big game hunting can provide feedback now via an online 10-question Big Game Hunting License Distribution Public Comment Form. Your feedback will help identify the highest priority topics for review by CPW over the next year. Feedback must be submitted by Nov. 22, 2021.

Two New Art Shows in La Veta

LA VETA — The Spanish Peaks Arts Council in La Veta invites everyone to see two new art exhibits, now on display until November 6th. The Fall Show includes original artwork by 15 area artists in a variety of media and styles. Huerfano Memorial Auxiliary needs Volunteers

WALSENBURG –The Huerfano Memorial Auxiliary meets at the Hospital Auxiliary on the second Wednesday of every month at 2p.m. In addition, they run the hospital gift shop, from which all proceeds go to benefit the hospital. The gift shop is open 5 days a week from 10a.m.-3p.m., but right now it is held down only by four or five women. They need some volunteers to take on some shifts and benefit the hospital community.

TRINIDAD — The Trinidad Historical Society will be hosting a fall banquet November 5th at 6p.m. in the Pioneer Room of the Sullivan Student Center at Trinidad State college. USDA Forest Service waives fees for Veterans Day
OUR WORLD —  The USDA Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Region, will waive fees, where charged, at day‐use recreation sites in Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota, Kansas and the Bighorn, Medicine Bow and Shoshone National Forests in Wyoming in honor of Veterans Day, Thursday, Nov. 11th.

The Forest Service offers several fee‐free days annually to encourage Americans to explore the outdoors and visit their public lands. The fee waiver includes many Forest Service picnic areas, boat launches, trailheads, and visitor centers. Fees for camping, cabin rentals, or other permits still apply. Fees will continue to be charged at Forest Service standard amenity fee recreation sites operated by concessionaires, unless individual managers choose to participate.

Fox Walsenburg Weekend Movie
WALSENBURG – This weekend the Fox is showing Dear Evan Hansen, a film adaptation of the Tony and Grammy Award-winning musical about Evan Hansen, a high school senior with Social Anxiety Disorder and his journey of self-discovery and acceptance following the suicide of a fellow classmate.

New Beginning T’ai Chi Classes

LVPL Milagro Beanfield War Trifecta
LA VETA — The third segment of our ” Milagro Beanfield War” series will be held at the La Veta Public Library on Oct. 21 at 2 pm in the meeting room. For this segment, we will feature Eugene Jacques from San Luis. Eugene is the “mayordomono” (steward) for the ditches and historical water rights and he will shed some light on this complicated process as well as tell us about his journey as a bean farmer raising his great-grandmother’s heritage beans. His story is modern and ancient and not to be missed. Next week on Oct. 28, as part of the Dia de Los Muertos program we will be showing the movie Coco, a stunning and colorful story of a young boy’s quest in the Land of the Dead. So mark your calendars for that as well!

Youth Meeting at New Hope Community Church
WALSENBURG – A Bible study for teenagers begins this Sunday, October 24th from 6p.m. to 7p.m. at New Hope Community Church located at 801 Pennsylvania in Walsenburg (not to be confused with our friends at New Hope Ministries on Kansas Avenue). The first 3 week series will be on how to study the Bible. No church affiliation is needed for attendance. The study is aimed at High School and Middle School aged young people to help them live a life of faith, but all are invited to attend. The sessions will be led by Dr. Joel Shults, pastor of New Hope. The format does not require a long-term commitment and the areas of study will renew after each 3-week series.

Mindful Aging at SPLD
WALSENBURG – The HeARTworks outreach program of Mt. Rose Health Center and the Spanish Peaks Library District are partnering to offer a new Mindful Aging Program on the 4th Monday of every month at 2p.m. in the conference room at the Walsenburg Library at 415 Walsen Avenue.
On October 25, Sandy Dolak will lead a discussion on Social Isolation. Barbara Streisand was spot on when she sang “People who need people are the luckiest people in the world”. Social Isolation is not only a killer, but our struggles with the pandemic have only made it worse. Come to the library in Walsenburg on Monday October 25th and learn about the devastating costs of social isolation both in terms of decreased life span as well as a measurable financial cost to society.

We can start to change the tides of social isolation by gathering safely with covid precautions and start to change the trajectory of isolation. Bring your ideas for how we can create meaningful gatherings. The program will conclude with a fun, non-competitive card game that will gently take you to a new level of understanding of the people around you.

WALSENBURG – Huajatolla Heritage Foundation and the Spanish Peaks Library District are offering a special program exploring the concept of Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) at 2p.m. on Friday October 29th at the Walsenburg Library. Two New Art Shows in La Veta

Friends of the Library Book Sale

National Hispanic Heritage Month
OUR WORLD — Celebrated between September 15 and October 15, Hispanic Heritage Month honors the cultures and histories of people in the US who came from, or whose ancestors came from, the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, South America, and Spain. This years theme “Esperanza: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage and Hope” is a story well-known in the Hispanic community. It highlights how steep challenges emulate how great our tomorrow can be if we hold onto resilience and hope.

Take time to reflect on all of the contributions Hispanics have made in the past, consider how many more contributions will continue to be made in the future, and remember that we are stronger when we work together.

Change of Venue for Grief Circle

LVPL Milagro Beanfield War Trifecta
LA VETA — A 3-part series exploring the Milagro Beanfield War is currently being presented at the La Veta Library. The first part took place on October 7th, and the next two will take place on the 14th, and 21st. Those are all Thursdays and the programs will begin at 2pm in the upstairs meeting room.

In 1974 John Nichol published a novel titled the Milagro Beanfield War, a comical yet heartfelt tale of one town’s resistance against a big business with political backing. Now almost 50 years, the story still has relevance with the gentrification and scarcity of water being topics that have yet to be resolved.14 years later, Director Robert Redford turned the novel into a movie. Filmed in Truchas, New Mexico, the film is set in the fictional town of Milagro population 426 and tells one man’s struggle as he defends his small beanfield against big business and pressure from the state.

October 14 – we will have a discussion guided by Bob Heffenhauser comparing the book and the movie. You will enjoy this exchange of ideas even if you have not read the book or seen the movie.

October 21 – Eugene Jacques from San Luis will be our guest speaker. Eugene is the ” mayordomono” (steward) for the ditches with historical water rights as well as bean farmer raising his great grandmother’s heritage beans. His story is both modern and ancient and not to be missed! Join us for any or all of the components for discussion and education.

The Haunted Dungeon

OUR WORLD — Celebrated between September 15 and October 15, Hispanic Heritage Month honors the cultures and histories of people in the US who came from, or whose ancestors came from, the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, South America, and Spain. This years theme “Esperanza: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage and Hope” is a story well-known in the Hispanic community. It highlights how steep challenges emulate how great our tomorrow can be if we hold onto resilience and hope.
Take time to reflect on all of the contributions Hispanics have made in the past, consider how many more contributions will continue to be made in the future, and remember that we are stronger when we work together.

Human Rights at the Philosophy Café

OUR WORLD — Human Rights – we hear about them almost every day in a variety of contexts. “Human right violations of prisoners, of people with disabilities, of immigrants/refugees, of women etc.”
But we rarely pause to think about what Human Rights actually are and what the foundation is for the concept of Human Rights. It’s not just a legal theme, or political theme, but also a philosophical theme.
Modern philosophy, starting with Kant, views a human right as a special sort of inherent right, that humans have because they are special beings, namely human beings. Some view human rights as ‘made up’ concepts, political fabrications. Others say they are (God-given) morally significant natural rights, standards independent from political or cultural context. Some don’t tie it to a moral foundation, but to a more existentialist perspective: humans as beings with special capacities such as autonomy, critical thinking abilities, aspirations, decision making. Some associate human rights strongly with legal frameworks, such as international conventions.

Two New Art Shows in La Veta

LA VETA — The Spanish Peaks Arts Council in La Veta invites everyone to see two new art exhibits, now on display until November 6th. The Fall Show includes original artwork by 15 area artists in a variety of media and styles. The Inner Idea Arts, a group of artists influenced by Peggy Zehring’s classes at La Veta School of the Arts are showing in the SPACe Fuller Gallery. Two of Rena Kaplowitz’s new pieces will be included in the show, with proceeds from the sale of her pieces going directly into her recovery fund. John Mall Homecoming Weekend
UPDATE

WALSENBURG – John Mall High School’s homecoming festivities, slated for this week, have been postponed as a result of several recent challenges the school has faced.
The school just returned to in-person learning last Friday, after a COVID-19 outbreak forced two weeks of remote classes. On Monday, some 20 students, mainly freshmen and a few sophomores, were sent home to quarantine because they had come in contact with a staff member who subsequently tested positive for COVID-19 over the weekend, according to Huerfano School District RE-1 Superintendent Mike Moore.
In addition, he said inclement weather predicted for Friday put the parade in doubt and Friday night’s homecoming football game cannot be played because opponent Sargent High School had to postpone because they are also in quarantine.
“The principal wants to ensure that all students and grade levels are able to participate,” Moore said.
He said the school will hold a homecoming, but the date has not yet been determined.

LVPL Milagro Beanfield War Trifecta

LA VETA — A 3-part series exploring the Milagro Beanfield War will be presented at the La Veta Library on October 7th, 14th, and 21st. Those are all Thursdays and the programs will begin at 2pm in the upstairs meeting room.
In 1974 John Nichol published a novel titled the Milagro Beanfield War, a comical yet heartfelt tale of one town’s resistance against a big business with political backing. Now almost 50 years, the story still has relevance with the gentrification and scarcity of water being topics that have yet to be resolved.14 years later, Director Robert Redford turned the novel into a movie. Filmed in Truchas, New Mexico, the film is set in the fictional town of Milagro population 426 and tells one man’s struggle as he defends his small beanfield against big business and pressure from the state.
October 7- we will show the Milagro Beanfield War movie directed by Robert Redford.
October 14 – we will have a discussion guided by Bob Heffenhauser comparing the book and the movie. You will enjoy this exchange of ideas even if you have not read the book or seen the movie.

Eugene is the ” mayordomono” (steward) for the ditches with historical water rights as well as bean farmer raising his great grandmother’s heritage beans. TRINIDAD — As Trinidad grows, we are faced with the challenge of creating new housing and facilitating the increase in economic activity that comes along with growth. Where that growth will take place and how will it change the character of existing neighborhoods is a question of great importance and one that is shaped by how the city regulates land use.
Now we are trying to allow for new growth that allows for aging in place and promotes economic
development and vibrancy, so we have launched a survey to guide our actions and align that growth with the community’s current values. Halloween at the Aguilar Public Library

AGUILAR — Come join the fun of Halloween! On Friday, October 29th at the Aguilar Public Library at 146 West Main Street from 12:30p.m. – 1:30p.m., there will be several fun themed activities including small pumpkin decorating and a reading of Creepy Carrots by Aaron Reynolds. Trinidad Historical Society Fall Banquet Dinner

TRINIDAD — The Trinidad Historical Society will be hosting a fall banquet November 5th at 6p.m. in the Pioneer Room of the Sullivan Student Center at Trinidad State college. A meal will be served consisting of Chicken Piccata, roasted potatoes, green beans, dessert and a beverage for $20 per person.
This year’s program, entitled “Pieces From the Past – Letters From Former POWs, is interesting and unique. Presenter Melva Nolan will speak about a recently published book she has written featuring letters from former German Prisoners of War who had been held at Camp Trinidad during WWI

Colexico Experience: Spaghetti & Western Film Festival

RATON —  On October 15th and 16th, We’re bringing Colorado and New Mexico together (Colexico) by locomotive and teleporting some lucky festival goers to the “Rocky Mountain Land Of Enchantment” for a weekend of scenic train rides, western films and pasta-paloozas.
You are invited to participate in one of three experiences; The Trinidad Experience, in which all festival activities take place in Trinidad, Colorado, The Raton Experience, in which all festival activities take place in Raton, New Mexico, and The Colexico Experience, in which festival goers will utilize Amtrak’s Southwest Chief Train to spend their nights in Trinidad and the day in Raton, experiencing the sights, sounds and tastes found on both sides of the border.
No matter what package you choose, the weekend will feature a pasta dinner provided by local eateries, your choice of classic or new western film viewing, comedy, and dancing.

Costume Contest and Trick or Treating

RATON —  On Friday, October 29th at 3:30p.m. in Ripley Park, there will be a costume contest sponsored by Raton MainStreet, the Raton Police Officer association, and the Raton Elks Lodge #865. The RPOA will be donating cash prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes in both the boys’ and girls’ costume contest divisions.
After the contest, there will be safe trick or treating at participating downtown businesses. Finally, the whole even will wrap up at the Elks Lodge for hot dogs and punch!

Witch Walk
RATON —  On Saturday, October 30th from 6p.m. – midnight, witches will take to the streets of Raton…
Well, they’ll take to the streets, but spend most of their time in the bars! That’s right, the Raton Witch Walk Bar Crawl is taking place this year as a fundraiser for Raton Elks Lodge charities. Drinks, dancing, raffles, games – it will be a fun night by any measure.
Tickets are $30 per participant and include drinks & appetizers at 5 stops plus one ticket to a private dance party with CappTon Reid. Register at the Old Pass Gallery by October 27th. (Additional private party dance tickets can be purchased for $5 with registration.)
