Relay for Life luminaria bag decorating

OUR WORLD—Join us at one of our decorating nights to decorate a luminaria bag(s). Enjoy pizza, pop and water on us. You can bring your own things or pictures to decorate them or some things will be provided for you. Our big event is Saturday, August 6th and we want to line the walking track with lots of luminaria bags honoring loved ones. Each bag is $5. If you can’t come to one of our decorating nights and would still like a bag you can stop by Corradino’s in Trinidad or Farm Bureau in Walsenburg to decorate them at your leisure. Decorating nights in Trinidad are Thursday, May 12 and June from 6 p.m.- 8 p.m. at  Corradino Auto Body, 124 N. LA VETA—Help La Veta Public Library create a crochet coral reef display to decorate the library for our
“Oceans of Possibilities” Summer Reading Program. Pick up a ‘take and make’ kit at the La Veta Public Library, or use the patterns available on our website, or create your own design. Bring your creations into the La Veta Public Library anytime between now and Friday, May 20 and we will arrange them into a coral reef display. Beginning T’ai Chi classes

Fox Theatre weekend movie

WALSENBURG— Join us at the historic Fox Theatre in Walsenburg for our weekend movie “The Bad Guys,” After a lifetime of legendary heists, notorious criminals Mr. Wolf, Mr. Snake, Mr. Piranha, Mr. Shark and Ms. Tarantula are finally caught. To avoid a prison sentence, the animal outlaws must pull off their most challenging con yet — becoming model citizens. Under the tutelage of their mentor, Professor Marmalade, the dubious gang sets out to fool the world that they’re turning good. Rated PG with a run time of 1 hour and 40 minutes. Movie showtimes are Friday and Saturday 7:30 p.m., and Sunday 3 p.m.

Voices of the Past and graduation

GARDNER—The annual Voices of the Past competition will be held at 5:30 pm on May 12 at Gardner Valley School.  Graduation will be May 18 at 5pm.

La Veta cheer camp

LA VETA—The La Veta High School cheerleaders are hosting a cheer camp Friday the 13th and Saturday the 14th. Registration begins at 8am on Friday the 13th. The camp will be held from 9:00am-12:00pm both days at the Roger Brunelli Gym. Grades Pre K – 5th Grade are welcome! Participants will learn a performance routine including dance, cheers, chants, stunts, tumbling, jumps, and kicks. At the conclusion of the camp participants will perform their routine to friends and family starting at 12:10PM on Saturday. The registration form and payment of $30 will be due upon arrival to camp. End of life decisions and Hospice
 
WALSENBURG—Sangre de Cristo Hospice joins Elisa in reviewing the options of what to plan for regarding end-of-life decisions. You don’t have to be in hospice care to plan what to do or how someone will honor your decisions when you can’t make them for yourself any longer. You will walk away with hand outs and tools to prepare you for difficult decisions to come. End of Life, Hospice and Palliative Care on Thursday, May 12th, 11 a.m. at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg and is free to attend. Hospice staff will be there to educate people on what to prepare for and do before end of life occurs.

Notre Dame three years later

LA VETA—Tony Masinton will talk about what has happened so far to restore the cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris three years after the devastating fire. Find out how bad the damage was and the steps an army of craftspeople and scientists are taking now to return the world heritage site to its former glory. Tony holds a PhD in medieval church architecture and spent over a decade working on ancient churches and cathedrals in Europe. This discussion will be held at La Veta Public Library on Thursday, May 12, 2-4 p.m.

Clean up day at Fort Francisco Museum

LA VETA—Saturday, May 14 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. In preparation for our opening Memorial Day Weekend, there is spring cleaning and chinking to do at Francisco Fort! Come give us a hand. Saturday, May 14th from 9 am to 2:00 pm. Rain or shine. All are welcome. Lots of opportunities for light yard work and cleaning.  We’ll be having a chinking party for the pioneer cabin and the schoolhouse.  Great activity for kids. Chimayo Presentation-UPDATED

WALSENBURG—The Chimayo Presentation at the Walsenburg Library that was cancelled by the weather last month has been rescheduled for Monday, May 16 at the Walsenburg Library. During Holy Week, tens of thousands of pilgrims make the annual journey to Chimayo, New Mexico, and to its famous sacred site, the Santuario de Chimayo. Chimayo is one of the spiritual centers of the region and the destination of the most popular pilgrimage in North America. The roads to Chimayo course through mountain villages where Hispanic Catholicism has been cradled for more than two centuries, but Chimayo, as well, is a special place for all who quest to find divinity and to encounter the sacred within themselves. Spanish Peaks Chamber mixer

HUERFANO—The Spanish Peaks Chamber of Commerce will host its first mixer of 2022 on May 18th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Alys’ Restaurant, 604 S. Oak St. in La Veta. Appetizers and cash bar will be available along with guest speakers Lola Spradley with Huerfano County Economic Development and Lauren Roberts with Watercourse Foods and the new owner of the former La Veta school buildings. “The Bad Old Days in Colorado”

LA VETA—Ever wondered what it was like in the bad old days in Colorado?  Randi Samuelson-Brown wondered too and after extensive research into the little known stories and whispers of the past, she came up with her book “The Bad Old Days In Colorado…. Untold Stories of the Wild West.’ Join us at the LaVeta Library on Thursday May 19th  at 2:00 pm as Randi discusses this fascinating look at the old west which was a finalist in the Colorado Book Awards and featured on C-Span. It is sure to be an exciting look at our history that you won’t want to miss. Free with refreshments.

Youth outdoors job opportunity

TRINIDAD — Applications are open for Mile High Youth Corps’ (MHYC) Land Conservation Summer of Service program. MHYC is searching for positive, hardworking individuals between the ages of 18 and 24 to spend 12-14 weeks this summer working on environmental stewardship projects near Trinidad.
Corpsmembers earn a bi-weekly stipend, and are enrolled in AmeriCorps, earning a scholarship to be used towards advancing their learning after the program. They also receive up to four free mental health counseling sessions.
Corpsmembers will also receive training in one or more stewardship skillsets, including chainsaw operation, trail building and maintenance and pesticide application. No experience is necessary.
Corpsmembers receive industry-recognized certifications that lead to effective service and highly-desirable qualifications and experience that support opportunities for future employment in natural resource management.

TRINIDAD — Trinidad State College will host its commencement ceremony on Friday, May 13, at 11 am.  The ceremony will be held in “The Pit” between the Berg Building and the Library at the Trinidad Campus.

Hike to the Dinosaur tracks

TRINIDAD — Join the Fishers Peak Outfitters on Saturday, May 14 at 7:30 a.m. for this free guided hike to the dinosaur tracks. This will be an 11 mile hike, 5.5 miles to the tracks then back out of the canyon. We ask that you please leave your pets at home as it is rattle snake season. We will meet at Fishers Peak Outfitters in Trinidad then carpool to the trail head approx 1.5 hours away. Please bring plenty of water and appropriate attire. Expect to see amazing scenery, wildlife, First nations people’s petroglyphs, hispanic settler’s church site and of course the largest deposit of dinosaur tracks in North America. Second Saturdays –  Open Mic for all Literary Souls

TRINIDAD—The Corazón de Trinidad Creative District is pleased to announce its fourth event for 2022; the Second Saturday Series will continue on Saturday, May 14 at 7 p.m.  An Open Mic for poets and all literary souls, the Series is hosted by the Creative District on the Second Saturday of the month at 210 West Main St. The evening begins at 7 pm with a featured writer; the microphone then opens to all who would like to share their creative literary efforts. Armed Forces Day parade

Indigenous Workshop- Porcupine and Bead Earrings

Summer Reading program opens at Trinidad Carnegie Public Library

Scenic Highway of Legends Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

TRINIDAD — The Bi-County Scenic Highway of Legends (Colorado Hwy 12) has been awarded National Scenic Byway status and is now officially one of America’s Sceinic Byways!
To celebrate this, there is a ribbon cutting ceremony planned for May 27 at 11 am at the Colorado Welcome Center, 309 Nevada Ave in Trinidad.  Please join us for exciting announcements and refreshments.

Pop-up vaccination event at the libary  

RATON—  The Arthur Johnson Memorial Library will be hosting medical professionals from Premier Medical Group USA – New Mexico for a second Pop Up Vaccination Event on Saturday, May 14, from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.. in the meeting room.  Those who wish can receive a first, second, first booster or second booster Covid vaccination free of charge.  Both Pfizer and Moderna vaccinations will be available. Those receiving vaccinations need only provide their name, date of birth, and phone number if available. A registrar will ask a few basic questions. Vaccination cards identifying the vaccination received will be provided.  NO SCHEDULING IS NECESSARY, making this a simple and free way to begin or continue the Covid vaccination process.

World Migratory Bird Day  

COLFAX— Sugarite Canyon State Park is hosting a full day of events on Saturday May 14, celebrating World Migratory Bird Day.
• 6:55 a.m.  Early Bird Special! Visitor Center. Coffee, treats & birds at the feeders!
• 7:30-8:30 a.m. Beaver Wetland Guided Bird Walk. Lake Alice Campground.  We’ll look for Dusky Flycatchers, Vireos, Warblers, and Western Tanagers.
• 9 a.m. Coffee with a Ranger. Lake Alice Campground. Coffee, doughnuts & camp chair birding! Find out why we should dim our lights for birds who “fly by night”!
• 2 p.m. The Big Guys! Soda Pocket Campground. Come meet live birds of prey,  including some who migrate to our area.
• 4 p.m. The Big Guys! (Repeated) Lake Alice Campground.
• 5-7 p.m. Lake Maloya Guided Bird Walk. Lake Maloya Trailhead. We’ll look  xfor ducks, geese, woodpeckers, Western Wood-Pewees, and Violet-green Swallows.
• 8-10 p.m. Full Moon Walk. Lake Maloya Trailhead. Take a walk in the park after  dark! Learn about Sugarite’s nighttime environment and how birds migrate at night.

Bird walk at Capulin Volcano

CAPULIN— Celebrate World Migratory Bird Day by coming to an early morning bird walk with a ranger! Saturday May 14 from 7-8:30 a.m. Meet at the visitor center for a peek at the birds that call the lower areas of the volcano home and then head to the top of the volcano to see what birds you can spot from a higher elevation. Bring your own binoculars and water; bird lists and viewing books will be provided.

Moonlight Hike

CAPULIN— Take a ranger guided hike at Capulin Volcano under the full or nearly full moon on Saturday, May 14 at 8 p.m. Subjects include night time biology, lunar geography, astronomy, and the park after dark. Come and experience the top of Capulin Volcano in a new light! Wear warm clothing and layers as the weather may be chilly. Meet at the visitor center before heading up the volcano. Reservations are required; call 575-278-2201 with the number of people attending to reserve a spot!

Lunar eclipse viewing

CAPULIN— Come and enjoy the amazing night sky at Capulin Volcano and experience a total lunar eclipse! Also known as a blood moon, total lunar eclipses occur when the Earth passes between the sun and the moon. Join Capulin Rangers to experience this amazing event! We’ll have the telescopes out to get a closer look. Sunday May 15 from 8:30 -11:30 p.m.. Partial Eclipse starts at 8:27pm. Full Eclipse starts at 9:29pm with a Maximum Eclipse at 10:11pm. Bring layered warm clothing and your curiosity for an out of this world experience. No reservations needed; meet at the visitor center and follow red lights to the viewing area

Folsom site tour  

COLFAX—  The Folsom Museum will open weekends in May until Memorial then daily through Labor Day and weekends in September.  We look forward to you visiting the Folsom Museum this summer.
A Folsom Site tour will be held Saturday, May 21, 2022 from 8 am to 5 pm. The Folsom Museum appreciates reservations for the tours.  There are no set fees for the tours, although we would appreciate all donations. (575) 278-2122

Classic night at the  movies

RATON— Join us at the Shuler Theater on May 25 at 7pm for some great programming!  Classic Night at the Movies in May is sponsored by the Raton Police Officers Association (RPOA).  Turner and Hooch… Starring Tom Hanks and Beasley!  Free Admission and all donations go to RPOA for youth outreach programs throughout the year.

The Chief Bicycle & Comedy Festival

OUR WORLD — Presented by Bigtop Studios, the Chief Bicycle & Comedy Festival returns for its third year, and in 2022 we’re taking this festival across the border with shows in Trinidad, Colorado and Raton, New Mexico. Performances will take place in Trinidad from 4 p.m. to midnight on Friday, May 6th and Saturday, May 7th, and in Raton during the day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 7th. This year’s festival will feature headliners: Emma Arnold on Friday, May 6th, Eddie Pepitone on Saturday, May 7th, hosted by Sam Tallent and Nathan Lund.

King Solomon’s Mines?

LA VETA—The LaVeta Library is delighted to welcome David Steffan on Thursday, May 5, at 2 p.m. as he presents a fascinating recount of his experiences on the 2020 Tel Aviv University archeological dig at Timma Valley in  Jerusalem. Exciting information about evidence of  copper mines dating back to the time of King David and King Solomon (10th century BC)  prompted the Smithsonian to feature this on the cover of their magazine and chose it as #1 on their list of top 10 science articles in 2021. Free, as always, with tasty refreshments!

Friday Art Lab

WALSENBURG—STEAM class will be held at Museum of Friends on Friday, May 6, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Join us every Friday starting this friday at MoF and continueing all summer. STEAM is the focus   Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math   Projects explore how science, art and math intersect with technology.  Students are encouraged to bring their lap tops or I Pads as we create 2 and 3 dimensional art projects while we look at the art of Leonardo da Vinci up to present day artists who were both scientists and artists.  Projects include: “birds make flight;” “murals and math”; “the art of seeing – learning perspective and how the use of perspective changed paintings forever.”  Call for details: 719-738-2858

Beginning T’ai Chi classes

Eliza Gilkyson with the Rifters

LA VETA — Twice Grammy nominated folk singer-songwriter Eliza Gilkyson will be joined by special guests, The Rifters, for a celebration of Eliza’s new album From the River Wind. Join us at the La Veta Mercantile on Saturday, May 7 at 7 p.m. Eliza calls this her love letter to the Old West. It is composed of snapshots of the people and places, lives and loves lost or found over the years of wandering the west as a musical minstrel, searching for her hearts home.

School Nature Trail Work Session

LA VETA—Our work session on Friday, April 29th got blown away by gusty winds. This message lets you know that we rescheduled the work at the School Nature Trail for Monday, May 9, from 9 a.m. to noon.
The wooden sign frames, kiosks, and bridge need to be sanded and a new coat of stain applied.
All volunteers should pack a water bottle,  wear old sturdy clothes, and note long pants, and work boots, are required. Eye protection is recommended, as are sunscreen, and work gloves.
The minimum age requirement for this workday is age 16. Younger children must be accompanied by a parent.
If we have to cancel for hazardous weather or any other reason, we will email you or call no later than 9 a.m. on the morning of the workday.

Conversation about tourism

LA VETA—The Tourism Board invites you to an informative community conversation about tourism in our county on Monday, May 9 at 6 p.m. We will be hosting a series of community meetings to provide an overview of the work the tourism board is engaged in to bring visitors and tourism dollars to the county. We will discuss the ways we work to promote all the activities, attractions, and events that Spanish Peaks Country offers visitors. A light dinner will be provided. Huerfano County Tourism Board conversation will be held at the community center in La Veta. A zoom link will be available for this meeting.

Great Coral Reef crochet project

LA VETA— Have you heard about the great coral reef that is growing in La Veta? Stephine Masinton, the Children’s Librarian at the La Veta Public Library has this great summer program that will also be an art installation of a coral reef created by local crocheters. Sandy Dolak offered to help with this project by facilitating a group on Tuesday, May 10 at 1 p.m. at the library dubbed (NOT) Crocheting like a Granny. We will work together on the basic crochet skills to contribute to the reef (or to make hats and afghans for all the world). A kit will be provided with yarn and a crochet hook, and we will work together on creating pieces for the reef. If you are already working on pieces, please consider joining us and share what you have done.

Life & Death Round Table Discussions

WALSENBURG—Boies Ortega Funeral Home is sponsoring a free monthly educational series for 2022 on various topics including grief, end of life decisions, pre planned funerals and later in the year topics such as Medicare vs. Medicaid and Life or Death Insurance.
The next workshop is May 11, 11:00 a.m. on “End of Life Decisions and Hospice” Sangre de Cristo Hospice joins Elisa in reviewing the options of what to plan for regarding end-of-life decisions. Bless Me, Ultima in La Veta

LA VETA—Once again, from new perspectives, Bless Me, Ultima by Rodolfo Anaya will be explored at the La Veta Library. A second offering in the series will be Wednesday,  May 11 at 2 p.m. with the showing of the movie hosted by Bob Hettenhausen. He will lead an interesting discussion comparing the book to the movie. There are a limited number of free books available at the library for those interested in attending the programs. The program and books are made available by Huajatolla Heritage Foundation F.

Veteran counseling services
 
WALSENBURG—Veteran counseling services is coming to Huerfano County on May 12, from 9 a.m. to 4 pm. at the Spanish Peaks Veteran Community Living Center east parking lot.
Mobile Vet Center is a large mobile vehicle with space for confidential counseling and are used to provide outreach to eligible military veteran individuals in communities that are distant from existing services. Readjustment counseling is a wide range of psycho social services offered to eligible Veterans and their families. They include:
•      Individual and group counseling for Veterans, Service members, and their families
•      Family counseling for military related issues
•      Bereavement counseling for families who experience an active duty death
•      Military sexual trauma counseling and referral
•      Substance abuse assessment and referral
•      VBA benefits explanation and referral
•      Screening & referral for medical issues including TBI, depression, etc.
If you, or a family member, served in any combat zone and received a military campaign ribbon (Korea, Vietnam, Southwest Asia, OEF, OIF, etc.) then both you and your family are eligible for Vet Center services.
If you or your family qualifies for this service, this is FREE to the attendees! Vet Centers are a subsidiary of the VA and keep separate records from the main VA database for your security and will not be shared unless given permission under HIPAA regulations.

Notre Dame three years later

LA VETA—Tony Masinton will talk about what has happened so far to restore the cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris three years after the devastating fire. Find out how bad the damage was and the steps an army of craftspeople and scientists are taking now to return the world heritage site to its former glory. Tony holds a PhD in medieval church architecture and spent over a decade working on ancient churches and cathedrals in Europe. This discussion will be held at La Veta Public Library on Thursday, May 12, 2-4 p.m.

Chimayo Presentation-UPDATED

WALSENBURG—The Chimayo Presentation at the Walsenburg Library that was cancelled by the weather last month has been rescheduled for Monday, May 16 at the Walsenburg Library. During Holy Week, tens of thousands of pilgrims make the annual journey to Chimayo, New Mexico, and to its famous sacred site, the Santuario de Chimayo. Chimayo is one of the spiritual centers of the region and the destination of the most popular pilgrimage in North America. The roads to Chimayo course through mountain villages where Hispanic Catholicism has been cradled for more than two centuries, but Chimayo, as well, is a special place for all who quest to find divinity and to encounter the sacred within themselves. Youth outdoors job opportunity

TRINIDAD — Applications are open for Mile High Youth Corps’ (MHYC) Land Conservation Summer of Service program. MHYC is searching for positive, hardworking individuals between the ages of 18 and 24 to spend 12-14 weeks this summer working on environmental stewardship projects near Trinidad.
Corpsmembers earn a bi-weekly stipend, and are enrolled in AmeriCorps, earning a scholarship to be used towards advancing their learning after the program. They also receive up to four free mental health counseling sessions.
Corpsmembers will also receive training in one or more stewardship skillsets, including chainsaw operation, trail building and maintenance and pesticide application. No experience is necessary.
Corpsmembers receive industry-recognized certifications that lead to effective service and highly-desirable qualifications and experience that support opportunities for future employment in natural resource management.

Hike to the Dinosaur tracks

Folsom Museum’s Dry Cimarron Tour

FOLSOM — Join us for this year’s tour on Saturday, May 7, 8 a.m.   The tour will begin at the Folsom Museum with a tour of the town and its history. It will proceed from there down the Dry Cimarron with stops at local ranches and other historical places of interest. Lunch will be at the Burchard ranch where Mr. Burchard will give a presentation of artifacts and geological, and paleontological history. Folding Into Peace

Introduction to Colcha Embroidery

HUERFANO—Colcha Embroidery is a style of needlework created by women in colonial settlements in northern New Mexico as early as the 1700’s. By the 1800’s it was also utilized in southern Colorado.  Colcha embroidery has a wonderful history and a revival that will be explored through a series of classes.  Please join Sandy Dolak for an introduction to Colcha  on Friday, April 29 at 2 p.m. at the Walsenburg Library.  Come learn and get some hands-on experience with this historically significant art form.

Summer hours for Walsenburg Mining Museum at the Old Jail House

WALSENBURG—If the dog-days of summer begin to weigh you down and the kids are more than you care to handle, you might consider taking them to jail. We’re recommending the old county jail, home of the Walsenburg Mining Museum of course.  The museum located behind the courthouse at 112 W. 5th Street A is opening for summer hours starting May 2nd.
The old jail built in 1896 served the county well for many years before it was repurposed as the new home of the Walsenburg Mining Museum in 1994.  WMM is operated entirely by dedicated volunteers, who will be waiting to share a local historical experience.  Summer hours are Mon-Tues-Fri 10:00-4:00 and Saturday 10:00-2:00.  When you arrive don’t forget to greet our Mr. Miner statue and pay your respects to our miners list engraved on the base.

King Solomon’s Mines?

LA VETA—The LaVeta Library is delighted to welcome David Steffan on Thursday, May 5, at 2 p.m. as he presents a fascinating recount of his experiences on the 2020 Tel Aviv University archeological dig at Timma Valley in  Jerusalem. LA VETA—The Tourism Board invites you to an informative community conversation about tourism in our county on Monday, May 9 at 6 p.m. We will be hosting a series of community meetings to provide an overview of the work the tourism board is engaged in to bring visitors and tourism dollars to the county. Great Coral Reef crochet project

LA VETA— Have you heard about the great coral reef that is growing in La Veta? Stephine Masinton, the Children’s Librarian at the La Veta Public Library has this great summer program that will also be an art installation of a coral reef created by local crocheters. Sandy Dolak offered to help with this project by facilitating a group on Tuesday, May 10 at 1 p.m. at the library dubbed (NOT) Crocheting like a Granny. We will work together on the basic crochet skills to contribute to the reef (or to make hats and afghans for all the world). A kit will be provided with yarn and a crochet hook, and we will work together on creating pieces for the reef. If you are already working on pieces, please consider joining us and share what you have done. This is a great project to benefit our kiddos and our community.

Youth outdoors job opportunity

TRINIDAD — Applications are open for Mile High Youth Corps’ (MHYC) Land Conservation Summer of Service program. MHYC is searching for positive, hardworking individuals between the ages of 18 and 24 to spend 12-14 weeks this summer working on environmental stewardship projects near Trinidad.
During their summer of service, crews will complete more than 30 conservation projects spanning 23 counties and make profound impact on the community, the environment, and themselves.
Mile High Youth Corps’ Land Conservation Program is rooted in the tradition of the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930s and is devoted to the improvement and sustainable development of our two most important resources – youth and the environment. Youth participants, called Corpsmembers, are assigned to a crew that works on a variety projects. These include construction and maintenance of recreational and safety access trails, habitat restoration, fire fuel mitigation, historical preservation and park development projects. Corpsmembers earn a bi-weekly stipend, and are enrolled in AmeriCorps, earning a scholarship to be used towards advancing their learning after the program. They also receive up to four free mental health counseling sessions.
Corpsmembers have opportunities to network with federal, state and local natural source professionals and access to a vast alumni network. Corpsmembers will also receive training in one or more stewardship skillsets, including chainsaw operation, trail building and maintenance and pesticide application. No experience is necessary, MHYC provides hands-on training related to all projects.
Corpsmembers receive industry-recognized certifications that lead to effective service and highly-desirable qualifications and experience that support opportunities for future employment in natural resource management.

Folsom Museum’s Dry Cimarron Tour

FOLSOM — Join us for this year’s tour on Saturday, May 7, 8 a.m.   The tour will begin at the Folsom Museum with a tour of the town and its history. It will proceed from there down the Dry Cimarron with stops at local ranches and other historical places of interest. There will be a break for lunch at the Burchard ranch where Mr. Burchard will give a presentation of artifacts and geological, and paleontological history. La Veta Library movie matinee

The Puentes Project

Introduction to Colcha Embroidery

HUERFANO—Colcha Embroidery is a style of needlework created by women in colonial settlements in northern New Mexico as early as the 1700’s. By the 1800’s it was also utilized in southern Colorado.  Colcha embroidery has a wonderful history and a revival that will be explored through a series of classes.  Please join Sandy Dolak for an introduction to Colcha on Wednesday, April 27 at 2 p.m. in the Capps Building at Francisco Fort in La Veta or on Friday, April 29 at 2 p.m. at the Walsenburg Library.  Come learn and get some hands-on experience with this historically significant art form.

Folding Into Peace

LA VETA — On Thursday, April 28 at 2 p.m. upstairs at La Veta Library, Veronica Marino will lead a group activity of learning the origami art of folding cranes. The art of origami has been around since the 6th century. To make this program complete, Laura Bedford will guide the group in a Peace Meditation. Folsom Museum’s Dry Cimarron Tour

FOLSOM — Join us for this year’s tour on Saturday, May 7, 8 a.m.   The tour will begin at the Folsom Museum with a tour of the town and its history. It will proceed from there down the Dry Cimarron with stops at local ranches and other historical places of interest. There will be a break for lunch at the Burchard ranch where Mr. Burchard will give a presentation of artifacts and geological, and paleontological history. Participants can bring a lunch or order a sack lunch through the Museum at the time of registration. Fruit, snacks, and water will be provided by the Museum. (Donations are greatly appreciated.) LA VETA—Snow Range 4H is hosting an Easter egg hunt and bake sale on Saturday, April 16 at 10 a.m. at  the La Veta Town Park. The hunt begins prmoptly at 10a.m. so come early. There will be different age groups to make sure everyone can particpate and come out a winner.

Decorate your own Ukrainian style egg

LA VETA — Just in time for Easter! On Saturday, April 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. the gifted local artist Judy Passow, will provide a hands-on learning experience for you to create your own keepsake treasure honoring the art of Ukrainian Egg Design that has been passed down for more than 1,000 years. The class will be held in the Capps Building at Francisco Fort Museum in La Veta. All supplies will be included in the $25 fee. Space is limited and advance registration is necessary. WALSENBURG— An exciting Easter Egg Hunt for friends and family will be held at Fiesta Park at 928 Russell St, Walsenburg on Saturday, April 16 at 12 p.m.  Children under the age of five will begin their egg hunt at noon and six through 11 year olds at 12:30.

WALSENBURG—New Hope Community Church located at 801 Pennsylvania in Walsenburg will have an Easter morning sunrise service on Sunday, April 17 at 6 a.m. We will be meeting outside on the east side of the church building. La Veta Library movie matinee

Introduction to Colcha Embroidery

HUERFANO—Colcha Embroidery is a style of needlework created by women in colonial settlements in northern New Mexico as early as the 1700’s. By the 1800’s it was also utilized in southern Colorado.  Colcha embroidery has a wonderful history and a revival that will be explored through a series of classes.  Please join Sandy Dolak for an introduction to Colcha on Wednesday, April 27 at 2 p.m. in the Capps Building at Francisco Fort in La Veta or on Friday, April 29 at 2 p.m. at the Walsenburg Library.  Come learn and get some hands-on experience with this historically significant art form.

COLFAX— The PED is offering a three-part series of workshops called the Family Literacy Academy to equip pre-K through fifth grade families and caretakers with knowledge and strategies to support their children’s literacy development at home. LA VETA—The amazing Outside the Box art show continues at SPACe until April 9. Village Super Powers: Strategies for Expressing Strongly-Held Opinions

Community conversation about tourism

LA VETA—The Tourism Board invites you to an informative community conversation about tourism in our county on Monday, April 11 from 6 p.m. to 7:30  p.m. We will be hosting a series of community meetings to provide an overview of the work the tourism board is engaged in to bring visitors and tourism dollars to the county. We will discuss the ways we work to promote all the activities, attractions, and events that Spanish Peaks Country offers visitors. A light dinner will be provided. Life & Death Round Table Discussions

WALSENBURG—Boies Ortega Funeral Home is  sponsoring a free monthly educational series for 2022 on various topics including grief, end of life decisions, pre planned funerals and later in the year topics such as Medicare vs. Medicaid and Life or Death Insurance.
The next workshop is April 13, 11:00 a.m. on “Pre-Need Funerals.” No one really wants to talk about their own funeral. However, pre-planning your own funeral saves money, family grief and lets you control your legacy and how you want people to remember you when you’re gone.

La Veta Schools Student Art Show

LA VETA—The annual Student Art Show, produced by La Veta Schools art teacher, Amber Huff will be on display at the SPACe Gallery, 132 W. Ryus, beginning with a reception on Wednesday,  April 13, 4:30 to 6 p.m., with refreshments provided by the Boosters. The show will be on display until April 23. LA VETA—Snow Range 4H is hosting an Easter egg hunt and bake sale on Saturday, April 16 at 10 a.m. at  the La Veta Town Park. The hunt begins prmoptly at 10a.m. so come early. There will be different age groups to make sure everyone can particpate and come out a winner.

Decorate your own Ukrainian style egg

Just in time for Easter! On Saturday, April 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. the gifted local artist Judy Passow, will provide a hands-on learning experience for you to create your own keepsake treasure honoring the art of Ukrainian Egg Design that has been passed down for more than 1,000 years. The class will be held in the Capps Building at Francisco Fort Museum in La Veta. All supplies will be included in the $25 fee. Space is limited and advance registration is necessary. Hike to the Dinosaur tracks

TRINIDAD — Join the Fishers Peak Outfitters on Sunday, April 10th at 7:30a.m. and again on Saturday, May 14 at 7:30a.m. for this free guided hike to the dinosaur tracks. The Fishers Peak State Park Master Plan public meeting

Patterns and Spaces and Mined Resonance exhibits

WALSENBURG—Please join us to view two new exhibits opening at the Museum of Friends, 600 Main
Street on Friday April 1, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. We will celebrate the work of noted New York Artist Liz Whitney Quisgard Patterns and Spaces on the first floor. On the second floor is the work of local artist Max Kauffman Mined Resonance.  Max will be available during the opening to discuss his exhibit and will present a new public program on April 15 th at 2 pm, Artist Talk on Art. On May 7 at 2 p.m. Maria Cocchiarelli will present a gallery tour and discussion of Liz Whitney Quisgard’s exhibit.

LA VETA—The Tourism Board invites you to an informative community conversation about tourism in our county on Monday, April 11 from 6 p.m. to 7:30  p.m. We will be hosting a series of community meetings to provide an overview of the work the tourism board is engaged in to bring visitors and tourism dollars to the county. La Veta Schools Student Art Show

LA VETA—The annual Student Art Show, produced by La Veta Schools art teacher, Amber Huff will be on display at the SPACe Gallery, 132 W. Ryus, beginning with a reception on Wednesday,  April 13, 4:30 – 6 p.m., with refreshments provided by the Boosters. The show will be on display until April 23. WALSENBURG— An exciting Easter Egg Hunt for friends and family will be held at Fiesta Park at 928 Russell St, Walsenburg on Saturday, April 16 at 12p.m.  Children under the age of five will begin their egg hunt at noon and six through 11 year olds at 12:30.

Just in time for Easter! On Saturday, April 16 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. the gifted local artist Judy Passow, will provide a hands-on learning experience for you to create your own keepsake treasure honoring the art of Ukrainian Egg Design that has been passed down for more than 1,000 years. The Fishers Peak State Park Master Plan public meeting

COLFAX— The PED is offering a three-part series of workshops called the Family Literacy Academy to equip pre-K through fifth grade families and caretakers with knowledge and strategies to support their children’s literacy development at home. ‘The Bless Me, Ultima’ book and movie discussion -UPDATED

WALSENBURG—The Bless Me, Ultima event at the Spanish Peaks library in Walsenburg has had some changes brought about by the recent storms.  Thursday, March 24 at 2 p.m. we will begin our exploration of the book by Rudolfo Anaya. Ava Archuleta Clark, local herbalist will lead a discussion about the herbs and experiences that Ultima shares in the book. She will share her understanding of the work and gifts of a Curandera.  On Thursday, March 31 at 1 p.m. (note the time change), the Bless Me, Ultima movie will be shown followed by a lively discussion led by Bob Hettenhausen exploring the similarities and differences between the book and the movie.  Please join us the Spanish Peaks Library for these special events.

Two Peaks-One Book – Walsenburg

WALSENBURG— Please join us for a community book read, Two Peaks-One Book Walsenburg. The mission of this program is to foster community dialog & interaction by the reading & discussion of a common book. Our selection is “Bless Me, Ultima” by Rudolfo Anaya, which is a coming-of-age novel centering on Antonio Márez y Luna and his mentorship under his curandera and protector, Ultima. It has become the most widely read and critically acclaimed novel in the Chicano literary canon since its first publication in 1972
We will have free copies available of this novel for you to pick up at SPLD (Walsenburg). A Colorado Humanities grant to Huajatolla Heritage Foundation has made this program possible. Pleas and Petitions’ Author discussion

WALSENBURG—On Saturday, March 26 at 2p.m. the Museum of Friends, 600 Main Street, in Walsenburg will introduce Virginia Sánchez to discuss her most recent book Pleas and Petitions Hispano  Culture and Legislative Conflict in Territorial Colorado that sheds  new light on the political obstacles, cultural conflicts, and  institutional racism experienced by Hispano legislators in the wake of the legal establishment of the Territory of Colorado.  The book reexamines the transformation of some 7,000  Hispano settlers from citizens of New Mexico territory to  citizens of the newly formed Colorado territory, as well as the  effects of territorial legislation on the lives of those residing  in the region as a whole.

Roger Greene’s “4,284 Miles” UPDATED

LA VETA—The author of this year’s  “Two Peaks/One Book” selection, Roger Greene, will join us at the LaVeta Library on Thursday, March 31 at 2 p.m. (Please note the new date!). Mr. Greene will discuss his process and motivation in creating his latest novel chronicling the amazing 1916 bicycle journey of  Joe Bruce and Lester Atkinson, two young boys from Colorado. We will then have a spirited round table discussion of the book.  Be sure and bring your copy to be signed by the author. Refreshments provided.

Patterns and Spaces and Mined Resonance exhibits

WALSENBURG—Please join us to view two new exhibits opening at the Museum of Friends, 600 Main
Street on Friday April 1, 5p.m. to 7 p.m. We will celebrate the work of noted New York Artist Liz Whitney Quisgard Patterns and Spaces on the first floor. On the second floor is the work of local artist Max Kauffman Mined Resonance.  Max will be available during the opening to discuss his exhibit and will present a new public program on April 15 th at 2 pm, Artist Talk on Art. On May 7 at 2 p.m. Maria Cocchiarelli will present a gallery tour and discussion of Liz Whitney Quisgard’s exhibit.

Village Super Powers: Strategies for Expressing Strongly-Held Opinions

LA VETA— On Saturday, April 9th 2-4 p.m. join us for a village gathering to apply healthy communication skills and explore strategies for expressing strongly-held opinions in ways that result in positive change – even if that change represents compromise.
This is the second part of this two part series.
Using the action plans and information from part one, we will identify common complications that could arise through collaborative efforts. Through exploring our differences, our community can better implement best practices to work through conflicts for the sustainability of our community.

The Fishers Peak State Park Master Plan  public meeting

Family Literacy Academy

COLFAX— The PED is offering a three-part series of workshops called the Family Literacy Academy to equip pre-K through fifth grade families and caretakers with knowledge and strategies to support their children’s literacy development at home. The workshops will be offered in both English and Spanish once a month in February, March and April. These workshops will help families bring to life many of the strategies in PED’s Early Literacy Guide. American Red Cross Disaster Action Team Training

OUR WORLD — Your American Red Cross of Southeastern Colorado is hosting a series of Disaster Action Team Training Academies throughout the area. We are looking to build our teams throughout the Southeastern portion of the state, specifically in and around Pueblo. This training is designed to help build volunteer capacity to respond to local individual disasters like home fires, providing Comfort Kits and Financial Assistance to displaced families in every community.
The 1st Academy will be held Tuesday, March 22, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in Pueblo – Location TBD
The 3rd Academy will be held Thursday, March 24,   10 a.m.-4 p.m. This academy will be a virtual session for anyone interested and who could not attend one of the in-person sessions.

Two Peaks-One Book – Walsenburg

WALSENBURG— Please join us for a community book read, Two Peaks-One Book Walsenburg. The mission of this program is to foster community dialog & interaction by the reading & discussion of a common book. Our selection is “Bless Me, Ultima” by Rudolfo Anaya, which is a coming-of-age novel centering on Antonio Márez y Luna and his mentorship under his curandera and protector, Ultima. It has become the most widely read and critically acclaimed novel in the Chicano literary canon since its first publication in 1972
We will have free copies available of this novel for you to pick up at SPLD (Walsenburg). A Colorado Humanities grant to Huajatolla Heritage Foundation has made this program possible. The dates for our discussion sessions are Thursdays, March 17, 24 & 31 at 2 p.m. Stop in and get your copy and let’s make this a great community event!

Spanish Peaks Library Storytime

United Church final service and dinner

WALSENBURG — With numerous persons interested in the final service and final dinner at the United Church Sunday, March 20, the caterer is asking for a dinner count.  Those expecting to attend the dinner following the 1 pm service are asked to make a reservation with Faye Stroh jfstroh@msn or 719-989-8151.  Last minute attendees will not be turned away if the food holds out.  Special touches from the past at the final service and at the dinner – such as old-time hymns, attendance of previous pastors and members – perhaps even opening a 1904 cornerstone from the First Presbyterian Church, will be included.

LA VETA—On Thursday, March 24th at 2 p.m. the La Veta Library patron Alex Lukens will share the movie “Two Spirits” and then facilitate a discussion of this moving and heart wrenching true story that interweaves the tragic tale of a mother’s loss with a revealing look at a time when the world wasn’t simply divided into male and female and many Native American cultures held places of honor for people of integrated genders. Pleas and Petitions’ Author discussion

WALSENBURG—On Saturday, March 26 at 2p.m. the Museum of Friends, 600 Main Street, in Walsenburg will introduce Virginia Sánchez to discuss her most recent book Pleas and Petitions Hispano  Culture and Legislative Conflict in Territorial Colorado that sheds  new light on the political obstacles, cultural conflicts, and  institutional racism experienced by Hispano legislators in the wake of the legal establishment of the Territory of Colorado.  The book reexamines the transformation of some 7,000  Hispano settlers from citizens of New Mexico territory to  citizens of the newly formed Colorado territory, as well as the  effects of territorial legislation on the lives of those residing  in the region as a whole.

Spring break youth club

TRINIDAD—The Trinidad Youth Club will be offering an opportunity for Trinidad and local area youth age 5 and under 17 during the spring break time period when local schools are on break.
Starting Monday, March 21, the students will learn how to start an indoor garden and grow the food they can eat within a week with information education from Fungi Family Farm LLC.
They will also learn about indoor and outdoor greenhouse lighting, worms, composting, watering, seed preparation, spouting, harvesting and eating.
Tuesday it’s off to the Raton Regional Aquatic Center for some fun indoor swimming.
Wednesday we are off to Longs Canyon for a walk along the stream among the trees and discover some interesting information about our local pinyon-juniper forest, to learn about the value of trees.
Thursday we travel to Capulin National Volcano Monument and walk on top of a volcano.
Finally, Friday we end the week at Art-o-Cade and discover just how fun it can be to decorate a car and transform it into an art piece!
