WALSENBURG — Twenty-year-old Mason Lykins of Walsenburg died as the result of a head-on crash on Highway 160, 14 miles west of Walsenburg shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday.
Lykins was driving east on Colorado 160 in a 2012 Chevrolet Hatchback when a westbound Dodge pickup driven by Maximiliano Delacruz-Munoz, 33, of Walsenburg drifted into oncoming traffic and caused a head-on collision. The pickup caught fire and rolled onto its top. The hatchback was forced backward and off the left shoulder of the road. A passenger in Lykins’ vehicle, Alfonso Aguirre, 36, of La Junta, also was not wearing a seat belt and was transported to Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center with serious injuries. Delacruz-Munoz was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash and was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.
Alcohol is being considered a factor and the accident remains under investigation.
