Lathrop Park’s Amphitheater Program

LATHROP- Keeping the past alive through song, local favorite Dennis Rains returns to play guitar and sing Songs of the Past. His cowboy ballads, Bluegrass, and ol’ time country keeps the audience toe-tapping.  Please join us at the Amphitheater at 7 pm this Friday Aug 1 to relive a part of our history.

    Come back on Saturday Aug 2 at 7:30 pm for the group Aztlan presenting Native American Storytelling Through Song & Dance.  This theater group expresses the values of the Native American people through song and dance.  Their story is told in such a beautiful manner with the goal of building understanding of their culture.  Please join them at the amphitheater to observe how this group carries on the traditions of their ancestors.

     All events are free, but a valid parks pass is required on all vehicles entering the park.  In the event of inclement weather, programs will be held at the Visitor’s Center.

Ice Cream, Bake & Rummage Sale

WALSENBURG- There will be a fundraiser for El Fandango on Saturday August 2 from 8 to 2 at the FOX Theatre.  Come cool off with a root beer float, eat cookies and get some great bargains.

Eat great food and help great students

GARDNER- Don’t forget to go to Gardner this weekend for the annual Gardner Chuckwagon Supper.  It begins at 2 pm and continue until 6 pm, and you get the double pleasure of great food and the knowledge you are helping raise money for two annual scholarships for outstanding Gardner students.  Since 2004,  $3,800 has been awarded to area students. 

Reminder: Free Summer Concert

WALSENBURG- Benny and Brian will present a free summer concert of Christian music Saturday August 2  at 7 pm at the United Church in Walsenburg (next to Loaf N Jug).   Everyone is welcome!

Reminder: All Huerfano Reunion

WALSENBURG-  The All Huerfano County High School Classes Combined Reunion will be held Saturday August  9.  The dinner and dance will start at 12 noon and go until 5 pm, and will be held at the Red Barn Hall at 3330 Arena Road, in Pueblo, Colorado 81005.    Cost is $15 per person.  Make your check out to Ernie DeHerrera and send it to him the following:  518 La Vista Rd, Pueblo, CO 81005.  Call 719-404-0350 for more information.

St. Mary’s Bake Sale

WALSENBURG- St. Mary’s church is having a bake sale on Sunday August 10th after 10:00 Mass.

Sacred Heart Church’s Annual River Mass

GARDNER-  Sacred Heart Church of Gardner will be celebrating their annual River Mass on Sunday August 17, 2008 at 12:30 om.  The River Mass will take place at the Upper Huerfano State Park.  The Mariachi’s of Pueblo will be providing musical accompaniment for the River Mass.  After the Mass will be a picnic with hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks provided.  Please bring a large side dish to share.  Please also bring your lawn and/or flding chairs.  Everyone is invited to come and join in the celebration.  For information, call St. Mary’s Church at 719-738-1204.  

4-H Fair Coming Soon

WALSENBURG- The Huerfano County 4-H Fair is being held next week Wednesday August 6 through Sunday August 10.   Besides the competitive events and shows, there will be a ranch rodeo Friday August 8, and a kids rodeo Saturday the 9th.  Sunday the 10th will have a Cowboy Church, barbecue and livestock sale. 

    The Board of the Huerfano County Farm Bureau is also sponsoring an ag appreciation dinner which will be served at no charge to people involved in agriculture, as a gesture of gratitude for the commitment ranchers and farmers have made to preserve the legacy of agriculture and for the vital role they fill in the local economy.

    The dinner will take place at the 4-H barn in La Veta on Friday, August 8.  The serving line will open at 4:30 pm and continue until the 6 pm Ranch Rodeo, or until the food runs out.

Cuchara Valley  Geology Tour/Hike

CUCHARA- On Saturday August 9, local resident, David Moore, a practicing geologist with the Earth Processes Division of the United States Geologic Survey, will lead a tour and hike focused on the geologic features in the Cuchara Valley, including the surrounding mountains, dikes, volcanic plugs, the valley formation, and the origin and demise of the ancestral Rockies.  The tour will start at 8 am at the La Veta Town Park and will end at about 2 pm.  In order to permit Dave to provide a great learning experience and address participants’ particular interests, the group is limited to 16. The cost is $20 per participant, payable on August 9.  All proceeds will benefit the St. Benedict Episcopal Church outreach fund helping those in need. Health Outreach at the County Fair

LA VETA- Spanish Peaks Regional Health Outreach Office is promoting the Huerfano County Fair by offering on-site health related activities from 10 am to 2 pm Saturday August 9 at the Fairgrounds.  There will be a special program on ATV Safety with many free handouts and drawings for helmets.  The Flight for Life Helicopter plans to arrive at 9:30 and will be available to view.  The Outreach Office will offer free blood pressure and oxygen level testing, plus the opportunity to sign up for many free health care programs.  Intellitec college is bringing students that will assist not only with health screening, but also are offering free chair massages!  Huerfano County Youth Services will bring the amazing computerized babies and the fatal vision goggles.  The Colorado State Patrol and the Pueblo Fire Department Educational Unit have also been invited.  Please come to the Huerfano County Fairgrounds in La Veta and support our 4-H Families, see the animals, choose a healthier lifestyle!

Testing & Voting

WALSENBURG- The public is invited to attend the testing of the voting machines that will be used for the primary election on Tuesday August 12, 2008. 

    The testing will take place at the Huerfano County Community Center at 10th and Russell at 1 pm in the meeting room.  This is the first foor to the right when you enter the community center.

   

Miles for Smiles low cost dentistry

HUERFANO- We are excited to announce that Miles for Smiles will be visiting Huerfano County and offering low cost dental services for your children.

    Miles for Smiles is a program with Kids In Need of Dentistry (KIND). It is a traveling bus that is equipped as a dental office, complete with two dental chairs, one x-ray unit, and sterilization unit.

    Miles for Smiles colorful bus will be parked at Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center beginning on Aug 18, 2008 and will be at that location through August 28. We accept Medicaid and CHP+. We also accept families who are uninsured. The first visit you will receive an exam and x-rays which is $20.  If treatment is needed we charge families 20% of dental treatment.

    If you would like your children to be seen by the dentist, please call 303-859-9624 for an appointment.

    The KIND program would also be grateful if there are any dental assistants or hygienists that might be willing to donate a few hours of time.  Please call the above number if you are willing to volunteer.

Powell steps down

WALSENBURG- Tom Powell is stepping down as general manager of the Walsenburg Insurance Center.   Daughter Sharon Ulrich took over last week.

Spanish Peaks Daycare T-Shirts

Spanish Peaks Daycare is a non-profit organization and a subsidiary opf the Las Animas County Rehab Center.  Their purpose is to provide affordable daycare and educational opportunities for Huerfano County families. 

    They provide educational programs that require taking the children on field trips.  One of the challenges they face is keeping the children together and easily identified as part of the group. 

    To help out, they want to purchase Spanish Peaks Daycare t-shirts for the children to wear on these trips so they may be easily identified and kept together.  The Center is asking for donations to ward the purchase of the shirts.  Call Margaret Bobian at 738-2335 to help out.
