VFW Auxiliary postponed

WALSENBURG- The VFW Auxiliary will not be meeting again until September.

Lathrop Parks Amphitheater

LATHROP- There are two fine programs scheduled for this weekend at Lathrop. The first is Friday, July 25, at 7 pm for Huerfano County’s own folklorico dance group, El Fandango,  a new presenter at the park this year. This dedicated group of young people demonstrate different dances from the Mexican culture.  Their colorful costumes represent the historical fashion that goes along with the history of the dances.  We will be “passing the hat” to help with costs.

On Saturday, July 26 at 7 pm enjoy seeing and hearing about Birds of Prey with Diana Miller.  We are very pleased that Diana Miller is returning with her birds of prey, which she brings along to assist in our understanding of these amazing animals.  You won’t want to miss this presentation. There will be a donation box to help defray her costs in coming here.  Please join us at the Amphitheater for learning at its best.

All events are free, but a valid parks pass is required to enter the park.  In bad weather, programs are held in the visitor’s center.

Clay Continuum III

LA VETA- SPACe Gallery in La Veta is opening its doors for the artists of The Clay Continuum III again this year.  Opening July 29th and running through August 23rd, this juried exhibition marks the third in a series of gallery showings devoted only to works of art in clay produced by clay artists from the region.   The official opening reception will be on Saturday, August 2 from 5 to 7 pm located at 132 West Ryus Street, in the Town Park, in La Veta, Colorado.

Participating clay artists offer a diversity of clay-made art for viewing and sale. There are wheel-thrown and hand-built pieces, porcelain and stoneware, functional, sculptural and purely decorative, whimsical and sophisticated—something for everyone′s taste and all of it representing some of the best clay art being produced in the region.  This is a show you won′t want to miss.

The original concept for such a show was the brainchild of three local clay artists, Polly Harris, Nicole Copel, and Lori Hannan. They began to dream of an exhibition space that would allow visitors to see the diversity of fine clay art being produced, of a space for reoccurring exhibitions and some of the best works available in the South Central Colorado area, of a space that would become a educational center to encourage beginners and seasoned artists alike to experiment with this three-dimensional art form. The dream began to come true when the SPACe Gallery in La Veta invited the three artists to mount an exhibition that summer. Well attended and highly praised, that first Clay Continuum has developed into one of the most highly anticipated and successful shows of the summer season.  Visitors to the town now expect not only beautiful mountain views, fresh air, and a small town ambiance, but also a thriving artist community, a growing part of which is the Clay Continuum Exhibition.  To encourage education in the clay arts, local gallery and clay studio, Piñon Hill Pottery, offers classes and summer workshops at 221 N. Main St. La Veta.

The Spanish Peaks Arts Council is also sponsoring the annual free La Veta area Studio and Gallery Tour August 2 & 3, from 9 to 4 both days. Maps and brochures will be available at the SPACe Gallery, 132 W. Ryus for the self-guided tour, as well as signs and banners showing studio and gallery locations in La Veta and Cuchara. Artists will demonstrate and talk about their work and will have artwork for sale.  Musical instruments, fiber art, paintings, sculptures, glass, jewelry, photography are a few of the varied  types of artwork created by artists in the La Veta area.

Call the SPACe Gallery, 719 742-3074 for information or visit spanishpeaksarts.org to learn more.

Huerfano Democrats Meet

WALSENBURG- The Huerfano County Democratic Party will meet on Wednesday July 30 at 6:30 pm at the Rambler Restaurant north of Walsenburg.

There are now less than 100 days until the November 4th election.   If you believe, as we do, that for the past 7 1/2 years our country has been moving in the wrong direction, we need your help.  If you believe that peace is better than war, stand with us.  If you believe that prosperity and security for all is better than "obscene" profits for the few, join us.  If you believe in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and the freedoms and civil liberties that they guarantee, now is the time to make yourself heard.  If you believe in the politics of hope and not the politics of fear, now is the time to act.  Complacency is our greatest foe.  Every vote counts and every volunteer is priceless.  We need every Democrat and every American patriot to stand up now and be counted.  Please join us Wed. July 30 at 6:30 pm at the Rambler and help restore the ideals that have made America great.
