Native American Community Church, Aztlan

GARDNER- The Native American Church, Aztlan, located in Gardner, Colorado off Williams Creek Road, will host its annual Sundance Ceremonies from July 16 – 20, 2008.  All good people are welcome to attend.  This is a family event, and people from all religions are invited to attend.  Food is provided, camping is allowed (no fires).  Women are asked to wear a shawl and dress while at the ceremony.  Please call ahead if you are a first time visitor  to receive instructions about proper attire, etc.  (719) 746-2400.  No drugs, alcohol, dogs, bad vibes, weapons.   

Vacation Bible School: Outrigger Island

All Huerfano Reunion

WALSENBURG-  The All Huerfano County High School Classes Combined Reunion will be held Saturday August  9.  The dinner and dance will start at 12 noon and go until 5 pm, and will be held at the Red Barn Hall at 3330 Arena Road, in Pueblo, Colorado 81005.    Cost is $15 per person.  Make your check out to Ernie DeHerrera and send it to him at the following:  518 La Vista Rd, Pueblo, CO 81005.  Call 719-404-0350 for more information.

Farm Bureau Plans Ag Dinner

WALSENBURG- At its Monday meeting, the Board of the Huerfano County Farm Bureau voted to sponsor an ag appreciation dinner during the Huerfano County Fair in August.  The Huerfano Basin Stockgrowers and the Upper Huerfano Conservation District have been invited to partner with the Farm Bureau in this effort.

    The barbeque dinner will be served at no charge to people involved in agriculture.  Farm Bureau Board president John Stroh characterized the dinner as a gesture of gratitude for the commitment ranchers and farmers have made to preserve the legacy of agriculture and for the vital role they fill in the local economy.

    The dinner will take place at the 4-H barn in La Veta on Friday, August 8.  The serving line will open at 4:30 pm and continue until the 6 pm Ranch Rodeo, or until the food runs out.

Locals in La Junta Theatre

LA JUNTA- MAME will be presented by the Picketwire Players 802 San Juan Avenue, La Junta, Colorado at 7:30 pm. on July 23, 24, 25 & 26.  Tickets are $12, and are available by calling the Box Office at 719-384-8320.

     Su Major, recently moved from La Veta to La Junta, to fill a counseling position at Southeast Mental Health Services.

    Her theatre experience includes a Bachelor of Education with an Emphasis on Theatre from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley.   She has participated in over 300 theatrical productions as teacher, director, student, and actor throughout her life.  She is playing Mother Burnside and participating in the chorus of MAME.  She can be remembered as playing Charlie Chipmunk′s reporter friend throughout a community Vacation Bible School in summer 2007.

     Her son Ian has been set designer, technician, and actor in Lyons, Lakewood, Englewood and La Veta.  He will be portraying M. Linsey Woolsey in MAME, dancing (the tango!), and assisting technicians.

Energy Job Fair Coming To Trinidad

TRINIDAD- EOn Friday, July 25, the Trinidad Workforce Center and the Department of Labor and Employment’s State Energy Committee will produce a recruiting event designed to connect job seekers with a wide variety of job opportunities in Colorado’s fast-growing energy industry, Whether you’re ready to make a major career transition or simply want to explore your options, you’ll find employers at the event who will be interested in talking with you. The date for the fair is Friday, July 25, 2008, from 10 am to 7 pm, at the Trinidad State Junior College, Multipurpose Room, located at 600 Prospect St. in Trinidad.

    There really is something for everyone in the energy industry says Stuart Sanderson, President of the Colorado Mining Association. “The industry needs all sorts of people, those who can provide labor, workers who are skilled in operating machinery. We need truck drivers, administrative workers, engineers, safety specialists, environmental specialists, soil scientists, hydrologists.”

WALSENBURG- This program will be presented by Mr. Edgar DeVan at the Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg, July 18, 10:30 am.  Everyone is invited.

Tax Payments Online

WALSENBURG-The Huerfano County Treasurer has announced that residents can now make tax payments online, additionally at the agency office.  For added convenience, taxpayers may use an American Express®, Discover®, MasterCard® or VISA® credit or debit card to make a payment. 

    The new service gives residents a flexible, secure method of making payments conveniently and on time.  Depending upon credit card benefits, cardholders can earn rewards such as airline miles or other bonuses when paying their taxes through Point & Pay. 

    Residents can make an online payment through the internet by going to the county’s website at www.huerfano.us, clicking  on Treasurer’s Office and then selecting the appropriate payment link.

    Information requested will include an account number, credit or debit card information, and the amount of the tax that is to be paid.  A nominal fee is calculated and charged for this convenient service.

Road Patching in Walsenburg

WALSENBURG – The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will be machine patching Walsen Avenue (Interstate 25 Business Route) through the north side of Walsenburg next week.  Monday, July 14, through Thursday, July 17, from 6:30 am. to 4:30 pm. single lane closures will be in place on northbound or southbound Walsen Avenue between Grand Street and Interstate 25, north of Walsenburg.  Delays should be expected as flaggers alternate traffic through the work zone.           CDOT is advising southbound I-25 drivers to avoid using the north Walsenburg exit (# 52) and instead, use the Walsenburg/State Highway 10 exit (# 50) for access into Walsenburg and to westbound U.S. 160. Motorists are reminded to please Slow for the Cone Zone, stay alert and pay attention to and obey all work zone/advisory signs and flaggers.­

Chuckwagon Diner Scholarships

GARDNER- The Gardner Chuckwagon Supper Corporation is sponsoring two scholarships to be awarded to continuing college or trade school students in their sophomore, junior or senior year this fall.  Applicants must be a resident of the Gardner area and must have attended Gardner School for at least two years.  The amount of the award is dependent upon the applicant’s grade point average and is up to a maximum of $1200.00 for a 4.0GPA.

    Proceeds from the annual, first Saturday in August Gardner Chuckwagon Supper are used to award two scholarships each year. Since 2004 a total of $3,800 has been awarded to area students.

Mosquito Spraying

WALSENBURG- The City of Walsenburg will begin pesticide application for the entire city, Tuesdays and Fridays, beginning Thursday, July 18, 2008, depending on consistency of air temperature staying above 60 degrees overnight.  Target pest is the mosquito, and streets only will be treated.  Pesticide used is called Insecticide “Kontrol 4 – 4”, and needs no carrier other than air.  Sprayings will commence 6:30 pm. until entire city covered every Tuesday and Friday throughout the rest of the summer.

    Should you have questions in regard to the pesticide or process in which the City sprays for the insect, please contact City Hall (738-1048) for further information.

Annual school Supply Drive

HUERFANO- Huerfano County Branch, The First National Bank in Trinidad, made a commitment to continue its efforts to support the youth in our community by holding its annual “School Supply Drive” to collect for the children in our area.

    School supplies needed include pencils, erasers, 12” rulers, crayons, glue, scissors and notebook paper. Donations need to be dropped off no later than August 15 to the Huerfano County Branch at 135 W. 6th in Walsenburg. Donations will be distributed to area schools based upon enrollment numbers, and teachers will be able to give the supplies to the students as needed.

Sundowners

WALSENBURG- The Sundowners golf scrambles have started again. Hopefully the weather will be nicer this month and rain won’t be a problem on Wednesday nights. The first scramble was held July 2 with eight people present. The winning foursome was composed of Ruth Strong, Dick Martinson, Frank Reider and Russell Young. Coming in second was Bill Hix, Leo Sager, Travette Wells and son, Zack Wells.

    The second week of the Sundowners hosted a field of 18 golfers. There was a tie for top honors, which was broken by a scorecard playoff. The winning team consisted of Beverly Brownlee, Jim Dewey, and Bill Hix. Second place went to Lauralee Romero, Bob Reynolds, Dick Martinson, and Ruth Strong. Third place went to Sheila Dorough, Russell Young, Frank Reider and Orlando Herrera.  Other golfers included, Ellen Larson, Jim Holbrook, Leo Safer, Reedi Schreiber, Pete Fini, Dan Wolak and Norm Wolak.

    Everyone is invited to play in the golf scrambles regardless of golfing skills. We try to pair up players of lesser experience with those with more experience thereby keeping the teams as equal as possible. If you would like to play, sign up at the golf course clubhouse before 4 pm., on Wednesday. Play will start at 5:00 p.m. Non-members must pay a greens fee, plus $5.00.

John Mall Students

ATTENTION: John Mall High School Students- We will be having a golf meeting for any high school boy interested in joining the golf team this year. The meeting will be for parents & students on Saturday July 19, 2008 at 5 at the high school. For more information contact Coach Lee at 250-3238.  Also any student interested in running cross country, we will be holding a meeting to see if there is enough interest to start up the cross country team again.  The meeting will be held on Saturday July 19, 2008 at 5 at the high school. Logic test

HUERFANO- The logic and accuracy testing for the voting machines will take place on Monday, July 21 at the Walsenburg Community Center at 1:30 pm.  All candidates and the public are invited to attend.

On the Ballot

CUCHARA- Steve Perkins, who is running for County Commissioner in District 2 as Unaffiliated, will be on the official ballot in November.

Auxiliary Meeting

Huerfano Memorial Hospital Auxiliary met on Monday, July 14, 2008. Gary Dick, Adm. CSV Nursing Home spoke to the members, stating they are in the process of replacement of the new CEO for the SPRHC position, and recruitment of doctors for replacements of Dr. David Paz, and Dr. Chris Wilson.

He stated they are repainting the helicopter and replacing the cement pad, adding a granite slab, and additional flags.  He reported a letter was received

regarding the State Survey, all was in compliance.

Lathrop State Parks Amphitheater Program

    On Friday, July 18 at 7pm. Jeremy Gallegos of the Department of Wildlife will share his knowledge of and experiences with black bears. Using hides and skulls, he tells us what we need to know as residents and visitors to the state of Colorado to keep as safe as possible. Please join us at the Amphitheater for this presentation that will keep your yard and campsite safer.

       On Saturday, July 19, at 7:30 pm. Sandy Willcox will perform at Lathrop State Park. Originally from Ft. Worth, TX, Sandy is now calling La Veta her home. Please join us at the Amphitheater for a lively time.

    All events are free, but a valid parks pass is required on all vehicles entering the park.  In the event of inclement weather, programs will be held at the Visitor’s Center.  We look forward to seeing you soon!
