Electric Co-op communicator earns national recognition

PUEBLO- San Isabel Electric Association Member Relations Manager Ashley Valdez of Pueblo West has earned national recognition for her knowledge and professionalism in the electric cooperative industry.

Valdez was named a professional Certified Cooperative Communicator (CCC) through an intensive program offered by the Council of Rural Electric Communicators.  The council is affiliated with the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA), of which San Isabel Electric in Pueblo West is a member.

She met the requirements for the professional certification by submitting a detailed portfolio of work samples.  These had to demonstrate her skill as an electric cooperative communicator, showing both knowledge of the industry and how to communicate effectively.

Having passed that evaluation, Valdez then took a rigorous four-hour written examination designed to test her knowledge of the electric industry and how co-ops differ from other utilities; her skills in member, employee and public communication; and her knowledge and skill in mass communications and marketing. The test included lengthy essay questions, case problems, short writing assignments and short-answer questions. The test was administered by an educational consulting firm whose principals conduct similar examinations for many national organizations throughout the United States.

Since 1985, when the program began, more than 300 electric cooperative communicators have attained CCC status.

The CCC credential is offered by the national organization in order to improve the practice of mass communication and marketing communication in the electric cooperative field. This is done through the establishment of professional development goals, identification of a body of knowledge and skills necessary to the practice of electric co-op communication, and recognition of those individuals who have demonstrated a professional level of excellence.
