Brent Elliot Matzen

Brent Elliot Matzen, beloved husband and father, was born March 8, 1943 in Wichita, KS, and died in Deming, NM March 13, 2018.

He received his masters in fine arts and art history from the University of Dallas. For twenty years, he taught several facets of art at Southwestern College, Winfield, KS, and Eastfield Junior College, Mesquite, TX.

In 1987, he opened Matzen Pottery in Ute Park, NM because he loved the natural peace and beauty of the area. His pottery and paintings reflected that love. For over twenty years, he would give a weekly pottery demonstration for groups from Philmont Boy Scout Ranch, Cimarron, NM.

His pottery has traveled to many states in the US and to several foreign countries.  He was a wonderful artist and will be remembered for his sharp wit and quirky sense of humor.

He is survived by his wife Martha; his daughter Sabrina Matzen Gleeand husband Jody of Las Vegas, NM; his son Zachary Matzen and wife Rebecca of Ft. Worth, TX; four grandchildren, Ella, Apronis, Vivian, and Arsenius Matzen; one brother, Bob Matzen of Littleton, CO; and one sister, Linda Matzen Ehrke of Overland Park, KS; three step-children, Mary Cook-Quick, Austin TX, John Cook, Clearwater, FL, and Anne Cook, San Antonio, TX; and four step-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in Cimarron, NM June 2 at 10 am at the First Methodist Church, officiated by Reverend Ellen Swain.
