Beautiful Cuchara Hermosa

CUCHARA-  Beat the heat this weekend and head to Cuchara for the 43rd annual Cuchara Hermosa Art Show.  It is held at the community recreation center near the Cuchara Chapel, and is open from 10 to 5 Friday and Saturday, and from 1 to 4 on Sunday.

The group began in 1964, when nine ladies met at Margaret Bradley’s home to brainstorm on how to help beautify the Cuchara Valley.  Local resident and artist, Bill Williams, was the art show’s first director in 1965.  At that time it was called the Flower and Art Festival and featured floral arrangements as well as paintings.  Over time it has evolved into being a juried fine art show, featuring artists who have submitted their work for review before being invited to participate.  Last year, 76 artists were represented. Gross sales were $63,000, of which 25% was retained by the organization for its civic projects.  Director Marnee Corbin says that this year “over 90 artists have checked in and the work is bordering on world reknowned- it is just outstanding.”  With over 900 individual pieces of art to be sold, the art on display changes constantly, as people take their purchases with them as they go.

Over the years the group has donated to the Quick Response Team, the La Veta Library, the children’s playground, the tennis courts, and maintaining the beauty of roads and parkways.

Cuchara Hermosa welcomes new members. For more information call art show director Marnee Camp at 742-3406 or go to www.cucharahermosa.org.
