Attempted robbery in Trinidad leads to arrests

TRINIDAD — Two persons who escaped from a correctional facility in Florida and allegedly attempted to try to take an Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) from the Trinidad Safeway, 457 West Main Street, on Feb. 22, 2018 were taken into custody after being arrested in Arizona and New Mexico.

The vehicle used in the attempted Trinidad Safeway robbery is in Las Cruces, New Mexico were it is in an impound lot.

Donald Cotterman and Joel Copper were taken into custody by Untied States Marshals and both have waived extradition to Florida. Both suspects face multiple charges after allegedly going on a 10 state crime spree after escaping from the Florida correctional facility.

The Trinidad Police Department used surveillance camera images to identify the vehicle and the two suspects in the Trinidad Safeway attempted ATM robbery. The arrests were made through cooperative law enforcement efforts involving the USMS, Trinidad, Las Cruces and Phoenix, Arizona police departments.

The remains under investigation and if anyone has information regarding the attempted theft of the ATM in Trinidad, they are urged to contact authorities.
