Area tracksters make their marks across southern Colorado

Local teams compete at Center Invitational meet

MONTE VISTA — The John Mall Panthers and La Veta Redskins traveled over the Pass last Saturday to the Center Invitational track meet, a chance to compete in a head-to-head matchup for best in the county. In the end, each team had their individual moments.

The Panthers had five top-eight place athletes on the day and some improved their state 2A ranking. Malachi Neil leapt 19 feet- 5 inches to take fifth in the long jump and subsequently moved to fifth in the state. He also placed fourth in the triple with a leap of 38’-2”. He is also ranked 5th in the state for that event. Teammate Nikko Vallejos was eighth at 36’- 8.50″.

Ty Quintana is also making his mark in both the discus and shot put, placing fourth in the discus with a throw of 114’- 3”. That places him sixth in the state. His neighbor to the south, Federico Orozoco of Hoehne is second at 135’-1.50 “. Quintana also placed seventh in the shot but is not ranked for state.

Redskin Alexis Topping’s sixth place finish in the discus at 90 feet- 0.5 inches was her personal best and good enough to place her in the third position in 1A.

For the La Veta boys’ team, Eric Morgan placed eighth in the 800M run with a time of 2:27.09 minutes. The time places him at fifth in 1A. Morgan also placed eighth in the 160M run with a time of 5:29.21. He is ranked third in the state.
