The Home Fires at Deerprint
LA VETA — The Home Fires will perform at Deerprint Wine and Bistro Friday, October 5, 6 pm. This Americana duo is based in Minneapolis and is comprised of critically acclaimed singer/songwriters, Sarah Morris and Vicky Emerson. Free legal clinic at Spanish Peaks Library
WALSENBURG — A free legal clinic for parties who have no attorney, will be featured from 4 to 5 pm on the SECOND TUESDAY of each month at the Spanish Peaks Library at 415 Walsen Avenue in Walsenburg. The next date for the clinic is October 9. Please note the new times for 2018.
By computer link, volunteer attorneys will answer questions, help fill out forms, and explain the process and procedure for all areas of civil litigation, including family law, property law, probate law, collections, appeals, landlord-tenant law, small claims, veterans issues, and civil protection orders. Walk-ins are welcome, and everyone will be helped on a first-come, first-served basis.

Health Fair blood draw time
WALSENBURG — SPRHC and the Health Foundation bring you the annual Huerfano County Health Fair, Saturday, October 20. Low-cost blood tests are available before the fair so folks can get consultations from health professionals about their blood tests at the fair. The final blood draws for this year’s fair will be held next week, Wednesday and Thursday, October 10 and 11, 7 to 10 am at the Huerfano County Community Center, 928 Russell Avenue.

Call for submissions for Ancestors Exhibition at MOF
WALSENBURG — Dear artist and friends please consider submitting your work for an exhibition scheduled to open October 27 from 3 until 7 pm entitled “Ancestors at Museum of Friends. This show is the Annual Dia de los Muertos Community Celebration with dance, music and food. This exhibition has been planned to acknowledge those who have passed and the people left behind who cope with loss. Loss is part of all of our shared experience. However this past summer in Huerfano County brought the Spring Creek Fire and its aftermath. This was more than most of us were prepared to comprehend. Work must be submitted by Saturday, October 13.
In respect to those who were affected by the fire and being evacuated and many who lost their homes, the Museum of Friends is inviting artists to create a new installation that explores mourning, loss or any aspect of the memory of ancestors.
Each participant will be given an approximate 10’ space to fill with photographs, xeroxes, giclee prints, original art, sculpture, fabric works and material ephemera or objects that reference the ancestor who has passed.

Art welding at LVSA
LA VETA — The La Veta School of the Arts is pleased to offer a two-day workshop on Saturday and Sunday October 13 and 14. This intensive two-day class will give students a hands-on introduction to gas and mig welding techniques for creating found-object and mild-steel sculpture. Learn common methods for cutting steel. Welding safety will be emphasized. Commonly implemented arts metal techniques will be discussed/demonstrated in detail. On day two, the instructor will assist you in creating a sculpture from found objects that you have brought for that purpose. In- structor Doug Anderson teaches this popular and long-running workshop. He started studying art and illustration through high school and college. He was drafted and trained as a welder/metal fabricator, where he graduated at the top of his ship fitter class, before being sent to Vietnam. In 1985, he established an art welding/fabrication shop called the Iron Horse where he created art pieces designed around Indian artifacts, as well as ornamental railings using flat bar steel. In 2001, he brought his business to Walsenburg, CO. Doug collaborated with artist Laura Audrey on a large outdoor sculpture in front of the music building at UC Boulder called “Stop & Rest.” All classes take place at LVSA, on Ryus Ave. across from town park. Author to tell of Old Boston, wild boomtown of eastern Colorado
TRiNidAd — Thursday, October 4, at 5:30 pm, the Trinidad Public Library is pleased to present a book-signing with Kent Brooks, author of a new book titled Old Boston: As Wild As They Come. Join us as the author presents a slide show and discussion, followed by book sales and signing. This event is free and open to the public.
Brooks gives us the following description of the book: “On November 16, 1886, four members of the Boston Town Company stopped on the southeast Colorado plains to stake out and establish Boston, Colorado in what was then eastern Las Animas County. Frontier newspaperman Sam Konkel joined the town company and promoted Boston as ‘The Utopian City of the Plains’. Built to catch the railroad and become the county seat of a new Colorado county, Boston became one of the rowdiest towns on the American frontier. Homesteaders and outlaws made Boston home during its brief, wild existence. Included among the inhabitants of Boston were the Jennings clan, before they gained fame as train robbers in Oklahoma. The story chronicles the life of the town leading up to the April 1889 siege which was the end of the Colorado Boomtown era and this old west town which was…As Wild As They Come.”

The goombah cliches come fast and furious in the award-winning comedy which revolves around two old-world hitmen holed up in a house in “the wilds of 1970’s New Jersey” after incurring the displeasure of their mob boss.
This Mafia-themed comedy plays like a gangster variation on Arsenic and Old Lace with a touch of Sweeny Todd flavoring. This play is appropriate for adults and teens.

Relief! Printing Workshop

Amanda Palmer said, “This relief printing workshop will offer an introduction to the wonderful tools and techniques of the age-old art of block printing. I propose to present a two week-long session in relief (linoleum) printing. The workshop will teach basic relief printing techniques including creating an image, cutting that image into a block and creating prints with a hand printing technique. Students will work together and receive one- on-one input from the instructor throughout the workshop. Their appreciation and under- standing of the value of creating artwork will be deepened, and they will come away with prints of their own, and also perhaps, of each others’ work.” –

TRiNidAd — Join us Tuesday, October 9, 12 to 1 pm in the Pioneer Room on the Trinidad Campus to hear about Zoila’s journey. She will share the obstacles she has encountered, opportunities and the network of support that has helped her reach the unreachable. Born and raised in Mexico, one of 16 children, Zoila is well-known as a professional athlete, youth mentor and community advocate. As an elite athlete Zoila was the 2008 USA women marathon Olympic alternate and represented the United States of America in three world championship events in the marathon: Osaka, Japan 2007, Berlin, Germany 2009 and Daegu Korea in 2011. While at Adams State, Zoila was named the women’s collegiate athlete of the year, won six national titles in Track and Field and was an 11 time All American. Zoila’s passion for life and the sport is second to none. Zoila’s motto in life is: “Be, Dream, Believe- Se, Sueña y Cree”. Her journey is one to be heard.

TRiNidAd — October is Conflict Resolution Month which brings Coloradans an opportunity to learn, practice and pro- mote respectful and constructive ways of dealing with conflict, dispute, and disagreement. Conflict Resolution is a canopy under which many practices, both old and new, are found. They include arbitration, mediation, restorative justice, and non-violent communication. A growing number of cities have joined the state in recognizing Conflict Resolution Month, and this includes the City of Trinidad, since 2017.
Conflictresolutionmonth.org and the Trinidad Carnegie Public Library will celebrate Conflict Resolution Month with two public events in October. First, Monday, October 15, 5 to 6 pm, the library will host a facilitated group discussion of the book, Why Won’t You Apologize? by Harriet Lerner. This sanity-saving book shows us how a meaningful apology can transform a relationship, and, on the other hand, the many ways that apologies can fall short of opening the door to reconciliation. The library will have a limited number of copies of the book available to check out.
The second event is Monday, October 22, 5 to 6:30 pm. The library is excited to present a free, public screening of two TED Talks. “Is the World Getting Better or Worse?” is a look at the real numbers, by Steven Pinker. In “Finding Confidence in Conflict,” Kwame Christian talks about using conflict as a tool to improve communication. The event will include a facilitated discussion. Both October events are free and open to the public.

Trinidad Community Foundation announces 2018 Grant Cycle
TRiNidAd — The Trinidad Community Foundation (TCF) will begin soliciting grant proposals from designated non-profit organizations in Trinidad and Las Animas County on October 1. Completed grant application packets are due in the TCF office no later than 4 pm on Wednesday, October 31.
The Trinidad Community Foundation mission is to enhance and develop the quality of life in Trinidad and Las Animas County by building a culture of giving, and by providing grants in the areas of education, health and wellness, recreation, historic preservation, and communication.
Through its grant program, TCF supports activities and programs that benefit the people and community of Trinidad and Las Animas County, and that further the TCF mission. Since its beginning in 2006, TCF has provided over $285,000 in grant funding to the community.

Autumn star party at Capulin
CAPULiN — Capulin Volcano National Monument will be hosting an out-of-this-world interstellar event this month. Join us on the night of Friday, October 12, for an autumn star party! Capulin staff will be holding a night sky viewing event located at the base of the volcano next to the visitor center.
Over time, observing the night sky has unlocked a plethora of scientific discoveries, helping people of all generations to better understand our own planet and those beyond. Due to minimal light pollution, Capulin Volcano has one of the best, and most well preserved night skies in the nation. Come and explore the “park after dark” at Capulin Volcano National Monument as we discuss some of the many mysteries the dark sky holds. Visitors are invited to attend this event from 6:30 to 9:30 pm (MDT) to use telescopes and deep-sky viewing bin- oculars and observe all the wonders this beautiful resource holds. Park staff encourage visitors to bring blankets, warm clothes, and folding chairs.

Mextoberfest in Raton
RATON — Our fall car and bike show will be the kick off for a brand new event, Mextoberfest, which is a Mexican/German fusion excuse to have a good time! The fest will be held at Raton Pass Motor Inn, 308 Canyon Drive, Saturday, October 13, 10 am to 2 pm.

RATON — The Raton Professional Business Women will hold a political forum on Monday, October 22, at the Shuler Theater. The forum will also be broadcast live on KRTN.

Poll watchers wanted for November 6
RATON — Every election year the nonpartisan organization, Common Cause New Mexico (CCNM), works to help voters cast their vote freely by fielding a team of volunteer “poll watchers” to help answer voter questions, locate their poll and make sure their votes are counted. CCNM is now recruiting volunteers from all over New Mexico.
Poll watchers are an integral part of CCNM Election Protection project. CCNM recruits lawyers, students and ordinary citizens from across the state organizing them to take part in our democracy and make sure it works for everyone.

Second Annual Toy Land Character Contest
RATON — The Raton Lions Club is having their second annual Toy Land Character Contest. We invite contestants to use their talent to create new characters that will be displayed on Apache Avenue on the way to City of Bethlehem.
Everyone is welcome to participate in this contest, individuals, groups, businesses, clubs, etc.

Judging of the characters will be on November 17 at 1pm at Climax Canyon. All characters made and donated will be accepted and displayed every year during the Christmas holiday. We ask that you put your name and date on the back of the character.

Second Annual Kickin’ Good Barn Dance
HATcHET RANcH — The Volunteers for Community Barn Dance fundraiser will be held Friday, October 5, 6:30 to 11 pm at the Hatchet Ranch Event Barn. This year, back by popular demand, Cappton Reid will play the night away. Don’t miss the line-up, besides the great live band we will also have a BBQ buffet, more than 25 silent auction items, and maybe a mechanical bull! Forbes Park Woodfest
FORBES pARk — Forbes Park will conduct another “Woodfest Weekend” Friday and Saturday, October 12 and 13, weather permitting. Several times each year Forbes Park residents help our friends across the valley by providing free firewood from the Park. If you’d like to participate bring your own saw, tools, rope or tie-downs, and safety equipment. Many trees have been cut down and may require additional cutting into lengths to fit your trailer, pickup, or other vehicle.
Convoys of participants will be escorted into the Park at 9:15 am and 12:15 pm. Please arrive at the gate 15 minutes early to sign in. If no one there, please wait for an escort.
Our goal as Forbes Park residents is to provide a simple process to share FREE firewood to our friends outside the Park,to reduce the chances of another forest fire by removing good firewood (fuel)…and help you to inexpensively heat your homes this winter. Visitors coming to get firewood are asked to spend 30 minutes or so stacking the slash from the firewood they are picking up, so we can pick it up with machines and haul it to the disposal area to be burned in the winter.

El Pueblo History Museum: Borderlands of Southern Colorado lectures
pUEBLO — El Pueblo History Museum will host scholars, artists, writers, and activists from around the United States for a Border- lands of Southern Colorado lecture series this fall. The series will run each week from October 4 to November 14. Each lecture will expand the understanding of the topics in the Borderlands of Southern Colorado exhibit that opened at the museum in May.
Topics for the series will include borderlands foods, indigenous slavery in the Southwest, indigenous and borderlands art, land rights and dispossession, and more. Speakers, including author Gustavo Arellano, professor Nick Saenz, activist Andrea Mérida Cuéllar, poet Emmy Pérez, and others will come from around Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, and California.
The talks will be at the following times:
Thursday, October 4, 6 pm: Nick Saenz, from Adams State University, will present “From Vision to Reality: Making Borderlands of Southern Colorado.” Hosted with the Pueblo Archaeological and Historical Society.
Wednesday, October 10, 6 pm: Independent scholar Virginia Sanchez will present “Survivors of Captivity: Agent Lafayette Head’s 1865 Indian Census.”
Thursday, October 18, 6 pm: Journalist and author Gustavo Arellano will present “Mexican Food Along the Borderlands (That Even Extend to Colorado).”
Wednesday, October 24, 6 pm: Border- lands poet Emmy Pérez, of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, will present “With the River on Our Face: Poems from the Borderlands.”
Thursday, October 25, 10 am: Emmy Pérez will present a creative writing work- shop open to all levels of writers, “Writing from Family Stories, Our Lives, and Our Communities.”

Wednesday, November 7, 6 pm: Maira Álvarez & Sylvia Fernández, of Borderlands Archives Cartography, will present “Under- standing U.S.-Mexico Borderlands: News- papers Mapping Geographical Borders.”
Wednesday, November 7, 6 pm: Andrea Mérida Cuéllar will present “Dispossession in the Borderlands.”
Each talk is free and open to the public, and coffee and biscochitos will be provided. The series will continue in January with more speakers to be announced in late 2018.
El Pueblo History Museum, located at 301 N. Union Avenue in historic downtown Pueblo, marks the site of the international border between Mexico and the United States prior to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. It is open Monday to Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm. Admission to the museum is $5 for adults and $4 for children, students and seniors (65+). Current exhibits include Borderlands of Southern Colorado, Without Border: Art Sín Fronteras, Children of Ludlow and the Museum of Memory.
