Ethos is today’s La Veta Library movie

Join us for the documentary film Ethos, as actor and activist Woody Harrelson explores systematic is- sues that are negatively impacting us and discusses ways that people can make choices that will help to create a cleaner environment and a more harmonious existence. Artists Call for entries Gift of Art Show
LA VEtA — The Spanish Peaks Arts Council in La Veta invites artists and the makers of fine crafts to enter the 21st Annual Gift of Art show, to be held Nov. 6 – Jan. 5. Artwork is due at SPACe, 132 W. Ryus, either Thursday, Nov. 1, 11-3 or Saturday, Nov. 3, 10-3. Craft artists who create small items may enter as many as will fit in a basket with a maximum diameter of 16″. The items must be marked with prices. Artists must also pro- vide the basket, which can be placed on a pedestal. Jewelry needs to be securely displayed. All other 3D art must be easily moved, all in one piece. Beginning T’ai Chi classes at LVSA
LA VEtA — Often referred to as “the gentle art of yielding”, the ancient, slow moving Chinese practice of T’ai Chi Chuan is also healing in many ways. Casino Night Fundraiser at La Plaza
WALSENBURG — Walsenburg Downtown Revitalization Committee (WDRC) 7th Annual Casino Night will be held Saturday, November 3, 6 to 10 pm at La Plaza Inn. Casino Night draws over a hundred guests from across the county. Evening festivities include casino tables with Las Vegas-style dealers, silent auction, and a grand prize drawing will cap the evening. Individual tickets are $50 and include two drinks, heavy appetizers, $200 in casino chips, and one raffle ticket for the grand prize.
Proceeds from the nights’ festivities benefit the Fox Theatre’s “Take a Seat” campaign which aims to refurbish auditorium seats with new upholstery and cup holders.
HCHS Sunday Salon for history lovers
WALSENBURG — You are invited to join the first of Huerfano County Historical Society’s History Happenings – a Sunday afternoon “salon” series for history lovers. On Sunday, November 4, the HCHS Director, John Van Keuren will show old photos of Huerfano County from our extensive collection at the Heritage Center. We’ll encourage discussion of the past reflected in these photos and how it influences current Huerfano today. We’ll gather at 2 pm at the Spanish Peaks Library, 415 Walsen Avenue, in Walsenburg. Ancestors Exhibition at MOF
WALSENBURG — This exhibition has been planned to ac- knowledge those who have passed and the people left behind who cope with loss. Loss is part of all of our shared experience. However this past summer in Huerfano County the effects of the Spring Creek fire and its aftermath are still coloring our lives. This was more than most of us were prepared to cope with and for many of us art is the way to express how its ire is still being felt.
In respect to those whose lives were changed by the fire,
the Museum of Friends has invited artists to create new installations to explore mourning, loss or memory of the power of their ancestors.
The exhibit includes works by Walsenburg’s own Ray Espinoza (now resident of Denver,) Dianne Hanisch, Lorraine Andreatta, Harold Vargas, Irene Grilley, and artists from many other parts of country: Ily Reiling, Nai’a Lewis, Liz Whitney Quizard. Works include: sculptures, wall assenblages, sound and audio installations, paintings and many unique combines.

Post-fire community
informational meeting
WALSENBURG — The Huerfano County Extension office will be hosting a county-wide informational meeting for home-owners and landowners who have been affected by the recent fire and floods. There will be several speakers during the even- ing, each presenting important information concerning various post-fire activities that could make recovering from the fire or flooding much easier.
As of right now, we have representatives from the Colorado State Forest Service who will be discussing reforestation and erosion control, NRCS personnel who will be discussing post-fire mitigation and re-seeding, Charles Bryant will be discussing noxious weed control following the fire and other speakers will be discussing other topics of interest to fire victims. The program for the evening is still under construction but it promises to be a very informative and informational event for all attending.
The meeting will be held Monday evening, November 5, 6 pm at the Walsenburg Community Center gymnasium. The complete agenda with a list of speakers and topics should b e available by the week of October 29th. Call the CSU Extension office at (719)738-2170 for details regarding the evening program.

City seeking volunteers for historic preservation board
WALSENBURG — The City of Walsenburg is seeking two additional volunteers to serve on a Historical Preservation Board authorized with the approval of Ordinance 1067 establishing a Certified Local Government. The five member board is charged with developing criteria for the review and designation of historic resources, review and determine qualifications for properties for designation as either an historic structure, site, or districts, conduct surveys of potential historic sites or properties and then develop and assist with public edu- cation programs that relates specifically to his- torical preservation.
Interested parties are encouraged to attend the next Preservation Board meeting on Wednesday, November 7, 4:30 pm in the Spanish Peaks Library conference room.
The two board positions will serve a four year term. Meetings are conducted a mini- mum of four times a year but may meet more frequently to fulfill the responsibilities of the board.
Some specific requirements that individuals must meet to be considered for appointment by City Council include professional background and or property/business ownership. Two of the five members shall be professionals in preservation related disciplines such as, architecture, landscape architecture, architectural history, archaeology, history, planning, American studies, American civ- ilization, cultural geography or cultural anthropology. Two members will be “stakeholders”. A “stakeholder” is a person who owns property or a business within the municipal limits of the City of Walsenburg. There is an opportunity for an interested person to serve in an at large capacity if they do not meet “stakeholder” or professional requirements. Members do not have to live within the City limits.
Citizens interested in serving on the Historic Preservation Board can pick up applications and an outline of board responsibilities and requirements by contacting the City Clerk. Applications with a letter of interest must be returned to City Hall by Monday, December 3. Applicants will be reviewed with recommendations on membership submitted to the City Council for approval at the council meeting scheduled for early January.

Basic French lessons at THM
tRINIdAd — Friday mornings, 9 am Trinidad History Museum hosts basic language lessons for students in grades 1-8. Using games and other activities, the objective is for students to have a basic foundation for the language and develop skills for future language-learning.
The cost for attending the morning sessions only is $9, with scholarships available. The all-day rate, which includes the morning language lessons plus additional afternoon activities, lessons, and lunch is $12.

Trinidad Historical Society fall dinner

The program for the evening will feature the historic “Trinidad Opera House Block” which was built in 1882 on the southwest corner of Main and Commercial Streets. You will hear about some of the places that did business there, see photographs from as early as the 1880s. Join us for an up-to-date photo tour and see some of the fascinating interior details that have survived.
The 136 year old building, now empty, has been deteriorating for years and is possibly in danger of being destroyed. The Trinidad Historical Society would like to share with you its concerns that this vital piece of Trinidad’s history should not be demolished.
The program will be held in the Pioneer Room of the Sullivan Student Center at Trinidad State Junior College. Every- one is welcome to attend the event. Plan to arrive at 6 pm. Dinner will be served at 6:30 pm, followed by the program.

RAtON — There will be a Doubles Disk Golf Tournament Saturday, November 3, 9:30 am – 4:30 pm at Roundhouse Memorial Park, 100 Memorial Lane. There are 2 rounds of Disk golf 1st round at 10 am; 2nd round at 2 pm. Registration is at 9:30 am; player meeting at 9:45. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the second round. There will be a huge raffle with great prizes.
Vienna Boys Choir at the Shuler
RAtON — The Shuler Restoration and the Whited Foundation presents the Vienna Boys Choir Sunday, November 4 at the Shuler Theater, 131 N. 2nd Street. 300 boys and girls attend the Choir’s schools. A quarter of the schools’ alumni become professional musicians. The Choir’s education and singing tradition is listed by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage in Austria. Professor Gerald Wirth is the choir’s president and artistic director.

Chili for Democracy ~ Cimarron Civic Club
CIMARRON — The Cimarron Civic Club (formerly Kiwanis Club) will once again be hosting the annual Chili for Democracy on election day, Tuesday, Nov 6. It will be held at the Cimarron United Methodist Church.
Serving times for lunch will be 11 am to 1:30 pm and dinner service will be from 4 pm – 6 pm.
All you can eat $5, no increase in price from past years. Veterans, please identify yourself as you pay and your cost will only be $4 as our way of saying thank you. Lots of varieties will be available.
Don’t forget to vote before or after you join us for chili! All proceeds from the clubs fundraisers go back into the community. We give a number of scholarships. We assist the HALOS parent, teacher organization of the Cimarron Schools. We have donated to youth fishing tournaments and other needs as we are made aware of them. We try to keep our adopted mile on Hwy 64 clean. Our meetings are Wednesday mornings, 7 AM at the St. James Hotel. Have a program you’d like to provide to the club, or a project we might help fund or just want to come meet us and see what all we do, please join us and enjoy the fellowship and hear about the fun we have as we operate the concession stand for both the July 4 Rodeo and the Ranch Rodeo among other things.
Call to artists for “Old Pass Christmas”
RAtON — The Old Pass Gallery is preparing for the “old Pass Christmas” show (Think Small – Nice Christmas Gifts! All en- tries must be original works (painting, sculpture, mixed media, photography and textile). Old Pass Gallery will accept up to 10 pieces of artwork on Wednesday and Thursday November 7 & 8, from 10 am to 4 pm. The entry fee for this show is $5 per piece or $2.50 if you are an Artist Member.
The show will open to the public on November 13. Let’s show Raton and our tourists our great talent in the area and encourage everyone to shop locally for their Christmas Gifts.
A BOX OF JOY® for a needy child!
RAtON — Send a Christmas blessing that says, “God loves you and so do I!” Our Goal this year is 100 Boxes, last year we were able to send 86 gifts to children in need. The kick off will be Wednesday, Nov. 7, 4 to 5:30 pm at St. Patrick St. Joseph Parish Hall. Materials will be available at the Catholic Church office on Thursday, November 8 9 am to 2 pm. Bayou Seco student program at the Shuler Theater
RAtON — Bayou Seco Music comes to the Shuler for a student show Friday, November 9, 9 am. This program is part of the Shuler Theater for Shortgrass School Programs. The public is invited. Bayou Seco consists of Ken Keppeler & Jeanie McLerie who play traditional music from the Southwest. They will start out acoustic just to show the power of humans versus the plug in the wall.

Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company 33rd season kick- ing off 20th year!
ALBUQUERQUE — This November, Yjastros will kick-off a 20th year anniversary celebration, commemorating over 50 choreographic works by over 30 Spanish and United States choreographers. Highlights of the 20th year celebration include a collaboration with Spanish choreographer Daniel Doña and the orchestra of New Spain in January of 2019, ongoing community events, and in-depth looks at the creative process.
