Veterans Day/Pearl Harbor Day Dinner
WALseNBuRg — American Legion Post 16/Auxiliary Unit 16 in Walsenburg is sponsoring a free Dinner for Veterans Day and Pearl Harbor Day on Saturday, December 8, 1 to 4 pm at the Eagles Hall, 614 Main Street. The Veterans Day dinner was cancelled on November 11 due to weather conditions. All Veterans and their families are invited to attend the dinner. Flood mitigation volunteers needed!
LA VeTA — La Veta Trails has joined the Town of La Veta in flood mitigation efforts along the Cucharas River from the north town bridge along Highway 12 to the south town bridge along Highway 12. The Town will be coordinating with the National Resources Conservation Service to determine the scope of what will need to be done. Two hundred volunteers are needed in this effort. Volunteer work will begin in January 2019 continuing through next March and can include helping to remove debris from the river to serving food to volunteers. To learn more about this effort, plan to attend one of the two informational meetings scheduled for Friday, December 14, 11 am to 1 pm and Saturday, December 15, 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. Both meetings will be held at the La Veta Public Library.
Volunteer Sign-up Forms are available at the La Veta Public Library. The Library hours of operation are Monday-Thursday 10:00-7:00 and Friday-Saturday 10:00-5:30. The Library is closed on Sundays. Student art to be displayed at Trinidad State through Friday
TRINIDAD — Trinidad State will feature another President’s Office Student Art Show from now through Friday, December 7. These are the works of students from the Art Appreciation Class taught by Ily Reiling. Reiling sent them out of the class- room to find beauty in their environment. The student artists started by taking a closer look at their surroundings. They then experimented with ways to convey those observations and create a cohesive series. This showcase consists of samples from this artistic investigation.
On December 10, the Fisher’s Peak Series by Paul Milosevich by go back up through the end of December. 2019 Calendars by Milosevich are still for sale in the President’s Office for $20 with the proceeds going to Trinidad State.

5th Annual Shop with a Cop
TRINIDAD — The Trinidad Police Department is continuing their annual Shop with a Cop event from now through December 25 and want to make it bigger and better. We are seeking kindhearted individuals and businesses to sponsor local children. Sponsors will receive a receipt for their donation and a photo of after the event.
Last year we were able to make Christmas better for over 100 kids. Each child was paired with an officer at breakfast, rode the Trinidad Trolley, and was also given $100 to spend as they wished. Many spent their money on family members and essentials like jackets and shoes for themselves. Each year more children in our community need assistance, especially during the holidays.

TRINIDAD — Be sure to wear your ugliest Christmas sweater for the ugly sweater hike Saturday, December 15, 5 to 7 pm! Join the Friends of Trinidad Lake State Park for hot chocolate, treats, a fire, and prizes including a Frog Hollow broom!
Meet at the amphitheater and enjoy some hot chocolate around the fire while we award prizes before heading out on the hike. Dress warm and in layers, we will be hiking a one mile loop.

Old-Fashioned Christmas at SCRT
TRINIDAD — SCRT and the Trinidad Community Chorale proudly present the 2nd Annual “Old-Fashioned Christmas” Saturday, December 15, 6:30 to 8 pm. The Chorale will again be singing favorite Christmas songs and leading the audience in singing Christmas carols. After the singing has concluded, a “Special Guest” will arrive and be available for photos. Kids of all ages are welcome!
Christmas goodies will be available at the SCRT concession stand. While the performance is free, donations are greatly appreciated to help cover the production costs. Doors open at 6 pm. Celebrate Hanukkah in Raton
RATON — Hanukkah, or the Festival of Lights will be celebrated at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 540 Rio Grande. The first of the 8 days of Hanukkah will be on Sunday, December 2 beginning at 6 pm. Temple Aaron in Trinidad is unable to host this happy celebration so the traveling feast will be venturing over the pass to alight in Raton. Everyone is invited to attend this event that commemorates the miracle of the lamps. After a victory over the Syrian Greek Army, the Jewish people needed to light the temple for eight days but there was only enough oil for one day – miraculously the oil lasted for eight days! Each day of Hanukkah another candle is lit representing the eight days of the miracle until the Menorah is full and the light fills the room. Sunday, December 2 is the first day of the eight days of blessing and will culminate on Monday, December 10. Christmas Open House ~FNB New Mexico
RATON — Come to the FNB open house Friday, December 14, 10 am to 5 pm. FNB New Mexico is located at 1104 S 2nd Street. Bring a new unwrapped gift to donate to Toys for Tots and receive an extra drawing ticket! Santa, refreshments, ugly sweater contest, drawings, Ms Unger’s Piano Students will play 3 to 5 pm.

RATON — The Raton Fire Department is accepting NEW un- wrapped toys or monetary gift donations for the Annual TOYS for TOTS. Please bring your toy gift or cash donations to: Fire Station 1 at 127 Clark Ave from 8 am to 5 pm; Fire Station 2 at 200 Troy Ave from 8 am to 8 pm; FNB New Mexico at 1104 S. 2nd; International Bank (main branch) at 200 S. 2nd; Phil Long Ford of Raton at 223 S 2nd; or Enchanted Grounds at 111 Park Ave. To sign up children ages 0 to 18 years old in order to receive a gift – go to Valle del Sol at 101 Letton Dr. or call 575-383-2065.
If you would like to volunteer to help wrap gifts the Fire Department will be wrapping gifts on Saturday, December 15 downstairs at the Raton Convention Center starting at 9 am until all the gifts are wrapped. Delivery of the gifts will be December 20 through the 23 to the homes of children.
Personnel will be out collecting toys and monetary donations at Super Save Grocery Store on Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 am until 7 pm. Please drop by and support a great cause.
Light Parade and Holiday Home judging in Springer
sPRINgeR — The Springer Light Parade will be Saturday, December 15. The lineup starts at 5:30 pm in front of Colfax General L.T. Care Facility. The actual parade starts at 6 pm. Prizes will be awarded for 1st ($75), 2nd ($50), and 3rd ($25) places!
The Holiday Home Lighting Contest entrants will be judged following the parade. Prizes will be awarded for 1st ($75), 2nd ($50), and 3rd ($25) places.
To enter the parade or the lighting contest, please pick up forms at either City Hall or Sportsman’s Crossroads or Alta Convenience stores.
Christmas on the Chicorica at Sugarite Canyon State Park
RATON — The Christmas on the Chicorica luminaria event will be Saturday, December 15, from 5-8 pm at the Sugarite Canyon State Park Visitor Center. There will be 1000 luminarias, hot drinks and treats, plus star gazing by telescope, and Santa! For more information call 575-445-5607.

sPRINgeR — The Chamber will be showing The Grinch with Jim Carey Sunday, December 16, 6 pm at the Recreation Center Winners of the Home Lighting Contest will be announced prior to the movie. Admission to the movie is free.
