10 things, rare sightings and Earth stories
WALSENBURG — Friday night, August 10, 7 pm at the Piñon Campground amphitheater the park naturalist presents Ten Things at La- throp State Park, a scavenger hunt for ten nat- ural objects that can be found at the park. Saturday morning, August 11, 9 am at the Piñon Campground amphitheater the park naturalist presents Rare Sightings, a family fun activity that involves solving picture and word puzzles to find the names of hard to find creatures at Lathrop State Park.
On Saturday evening, Storyteller Annette Meserve presents “Feet to the Earth Stories”. Join her for an evening of Earth stories with a Scottish flair. Meserve invites you to bring your curiosity and sense of humor…shoes are optional. The presentation will begin at 7 pm at the Piñon Campground Amphitheater.
As always, any vehicle entering Lathrop State Park must have a park pass. If you would like to attend but don’t have a park pass, remember you may check one out of either Spanish Peaks Library or La Veta Li- brary for up to one week. Lathrop State Park is 3 miles west of Walsenburg on Hwy 160.

LA VETA — The Small Business Devel- opment Center will host a resource assistance event Friday, August 10, 10 am to 3 pm at the La Veta Library. Is your business in need of technical support or financial assistance? Are you a displaced employee that has recently been laid off or have unemployment ques- tions? Business resource agency representa- tives and community lenders will be available in person to meet with local businesses and in- dividuals as a follow-up to the recent Spring Fire Disaster Assistance Center initial help provided. Whether you were affected by the Spring Fire or not, all businesses and individ- uals are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to meet with a variety of business and lender representatives that will be avail- able at one location to meet with you one-on- one.

Ag Coalition Ag Appreciation dinner
LA VETA — The Ag Coalition Ag Apprecia- tion dinner is being held Friday, August 10, 4:30to6pmatthe4-HFairbarnattheLaVeta Fairgrounds. This year KSPK will be broad- casting live from the event. The meal includes smoked brisket, potato salad, beans, rolls and beverages. The dinner is open to any with a connection to agriculture in Huerfano County. It doesn’t matter if you milk dairy cows, raise beef cattle, commercially grow crops or flowers, or raise goats for milk and cheese. The Ag Coalition is comprised of the Upper Huerfano Conservation District, Huerfano Basin Stockgrowers and Huerfano County Farm Bureau. The coalition provides the meal at no cost, but donations are accepted. This year the donations will be going toward a Spring Fire relief fund. Please come visit with your friends and neighbors and celebrate ag- riculture in Huerfano County.

Stonewall Century Ride
LA VETA – The 15th annual Stonewall Cen- tury Ride, Saturday August 11, is an all-day out-and-back 102 mile bicycle ride from La Veta to Segundo and back. It is organized by Spanish Peaks Cycling Association, a non- profit 501(c)(3) organization. Proceeds from the ride will be donated to the La Veta and Stonewall fire protection districts. After the Spring Fire, we have a deep respect for the amazing firefighters who saved our com- munities. Spanish Peaks Cycling wants to use this event as a springboard to re-invigorate the summer commerce in La Veta and Cuchara. Attention Huerfano County agricultural producers impacted by fires, floods, and drought
WALSENBURG — Berni Barela from the Farm Service Agency in Trinidad and Carl Beeman from the CSU Extension office in
Huerfano County will be hosting a meeting for all agricultural producers who have been impacted by the recent fire, the recent floods and the extended drought. The meeting will be held at the Huerfano County Community Center, 928 Russell Street, Monday, August 13, 6:30 pm.
If you lost agricultural property or suf- fered damage to your property in the fire or recent floods there are programs that you might be eligible for to get some financial as- sistance. There are also programs designed to assist with drought relief. NRCS represen- tatives might be present to answer questions concerning drought relief.
They will be providing information about FSA programs designed to help agricultural producers affected by the recent and on-going natural disasters. Information sheets about the programs and applications for the pro- grams will be available.
Ecosystem Recovery after the Spring Fire discussion
LA VETA — Post Spring Fire….Now What? will be presented Monday, August 13, 6 pm at Deerprint Wine, 106 E. Francisco Street. This ecology talk will offer an opportunity to dis- cuss ecosystem recovery following the Spring Fire with Derek Sokoloski, Southeast Area Manager of the Colorado State Forest Service, and Manuel Molles, Professor Emeritus, Uni- versity of New Mexico. Derek and Manuel will provide a few introductory remarks about ecological responses to disturbance, in this case the Spring Fire, that will stimulate a gen- eral discussion, encourage questions, and an exchange of ideas. They will discuss how the fire has affected different ecosystems, includ- ing grasslands, shrublands, woodlands, as well as forested ecosystems and species of trees. Deerprint will open from 5:45 – 8 pm for this program. Deerprint’s selection of wine and beer will be available, but not its food menu. Light munchies will be available at each table. This program is co-hosted by Deerprint Wine, Colorado State Forest Service, and La Veta Trails.

WALSENBURG — A free legal clinic for parties who have no attorney, will be featured from 4 to 5 pm on the SECOND TUESDAY of each month at the Spanish Peaks Library at 415 Walsen Avenue in Walsenburg. The next date for the clinic is Tuesday, August 14. Please note the new times for 2018.

Historical tour of the coal camps
SOUTHERN COLORADO — Among high rocky cliffs and at the bottom of narrow forested valleys, the early coal mining camps grew up in beautiful sites.
A tour of six of these ghost camps (not labeled towns be- cause they were meant to be temporary) is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 18. The Huerfano County Historical Society is organizing the five-hour driving tour on back roads.
The public is invited to meet at the Walsenburg Mining Museum, 112 W. Fifth, with registration 8:30 to 9 am. Handouts with photos will be available at each site.
Participants are asked to bring their lunch, snacks, and water. Travel will be on paved and on gravel roads for about 80 miles. Tour leader will be Carolyn Newman. WALSENBURG — The annual motorcycle and poker run, Rolling for Freedom, will be held Saturday, August 25, to raise funds for the veterans at the Spanish Peaks Veterans Com- munity Living Center. Registration will be 9 am at Minit Mart Truck Stop. Kickstands up at 10:30 for parade with John Mall High School Marching Band through Walsenburg to Spanish Peaks Veterans Community Living Center. A Memorial Serv- ice with Bikers Prayer, Color Guard, National Anthem and military music played by the John Mall High School Band will follow. Balloon release and Ceremony will be held in the Memorial Garden. The Poker Run will start at Sarti’s Bar, go through Gardner To Hwy 96 Road House in Silver Cliff, then on to Obie’s BBQ in Colorado City. This will be our 7th run.

SCRT company member Jamie Billings is currently conducting interviews with the people of Trinidad and is truly amazed and inspired by the stories people have shared to a true outsider. Trinidad Stories: An Ever Changing Vortex is a piece of verbatim theatre, or better known as doc- umentary theatre. This performance method has been around as long as we can remember, in that humanity has always been interested in telling stories from a more journalistic and personal lens. Verbatim theatre is a type of documentary theatre which uses interviews as source material for the basis of the script. ‘Recorded delivery’ is a more purist verbatim form requiring actors to wear headphones in rehearsal and in performance, so they can copy exactly what they hear from the edited interviews. In this style of ‘recorded delivery,’ SCRT company members will collaborate to create a new play with interviews from the people of Trinidad as their primary source material for the script.

Fort Union Candlelight Tours
SPRINGER — Fort Union National Monument announces that its annual Candlelight Tours event will be held August 11, 7:30 pm. During this event, visitors will be guided through the fort and through a series of skits performed by costumed interpreters. The tours and skits will be illuminated by lantern light. This is a free event, but reservations are required.

First Annual Cimarron Challenge
CIMARRON — The Cimarron Challenge, starting and ending in Cimarron, New Mexico is a gravel cycling event through the Carson National Forest’s Valle Vidal Unit and Philmont Boy Scout Ranch will be held, Saturday, August 25. .
Two routes will be offered:
• 78 mile loop with 5860 feet of gain
• 66 mile loop with 4046 feet of gain.
The high point on the long route is 9696’. Entries are capped at 250, entry fee is $80 per rider. Registration continues until all 250 spots are filled or August 20, whichever comes first. Youth Club of Trinidad
TRINIDAD — From now through Friday, August 24, our members will be learning about our hometown heroes, the people be- hind the scenes that keep Trinidad running. Guest speakers from a variety of civilian and military fields will be giving presentations on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
Our summer hours will be 10 am-6 pm, Monday-Friday. Membership fees are $15/month per child. Members can also join our Trinidad Triggers Youth Club for an ad- ditional $15, which includes a t-shirt, a season pass, and more. A free summer lunch pro- gram is available at the Youth Club and is open to non-members as well as members from 12-1 pm, Monday-Friday. Call 719-422- 8090 if you have any questions.
