WALSENBURG — Volunteers for Com- munity will be collecting food for the food bank at Dorcas Circle on Thursday, August 16, 1 to 4:30 pm in front of Charlie’s Market. Vol- unteers will be there to receive your non per- ishable food as well as pet food and toiletry items. All donations go to benefit those in our county needing assistance. So bring your extra cans, boxes, packages, jars, bottles, etc. of food or please consider purchasing a few additional items for us when you shop. Fridays for Fun: Tie Dye!
LA VETA — Young artists of all ages, join us and learn the art of Tie Dye, Friday, August 17. Bring a cotton shirt or other cotton item to wear or show to tie dye. Lathrop State Park activities:
WALSENBURG — Friday night, August 17, 7 pm at the Piñon Campground amphithe- ater the park naturalist presents Transition Zone, a program about the landforms and life zones of Lathrop State Park and the sur- rounding area. The program includes a 1.75 mile hike.
On Saturday morning, August 18, 9 am at the Piñon Campground amphitheater join the park naturalist in finding clues along a short walk to find answers to a word puzzle. This is a fun activity for families.
On Saturday evening, Lathrop wel- comes back Mission: Wolf director, Kent Weber, who will talk about wolves and wolf/dog hybrids and the work that is done at the sanctuary which was created to pro- vide shelter for captive wolves. He will have with him an ambassador wolf/dog hybrid. The presentation will begin at 7 pm at the Piñon Campground amphitheater.
As always, any vehicle entering Lathrop State Park must have a park pass. If you would like to attend but don’t have a park pass, remember you may check one out of either Spanish Peaks Library or La Veta Li- brary for up to one week. Lathrop State Park is 3 miles west of Walsenburg on Hwy 160.

WALSENBURG — The annual motorcycle and poker run, Rolling for Freedom, will be held Saturday, August 25, to raise funds for the veterans at the Spanish Peaks Veterans Community Living Center. Registration will be 9 am at Minit Mart Truck Stop. Kickstands up at 10:30 for parade with John Mall High School Marching Band through Walsenburg to Spanish Peaks Veterans Community Living Center. A Memorial Service with Bikers Prayer, Color Guard, National Anthem and military music played by the John Mall High School Band will follow. Balloon release and Ceremony will be held in the Memorial Gar- den. The Poker Run will start at Sarti’s Bar, go through Gardner To Hwy 96 Road House in Silver Cliff, then on to Obie’s BBQ in Colorado City. This will be our 7th run.

Mysteries of Gyroscopes at the Carnegie
TRINIDAD — One of the most counter-intu- itive contraptions in nature is the gyroscope. This is a program for anyone from 10 to 100 years old. It’s on this coming Monday, August 20, 5 pm in the Community Room. Gyro- scopes are all around us, and I’m not talking about the toy gyroscopes we loved to play with as kids. Anything that turns about an axis will behave with gyroscopic action. Some examples:

TRINIDAD — A free chronic pain self-management class will be held every Thursday beginning August 23 in the Garden Room at Mt. Carmel Wellness & Community Center. The class runs from 10 am to 1 pm.
Topics covered will include:

· Exercise tips for maintaining and improving strength, flex- ibility and endurance
· Communicating effectively with family, friends and health professionals
· Managing medications, activity and rest levels
· How to evaluate new treatment
· Setting weekly goals
· Nutrition
This 6-week class helps you deal with the challenges of living with chronic pain. Classes are highly participative, where mutual support and success build the participants’ con- fidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain ac- tive and fulfilling lives. The Chronic Pain Self-Management Program was developed at Stanford University.

Public Notice— Fire Ban lifted
COLFAX — Upon consultation with the Fire Chiefs of Colfax County, and under the authority of Colfax County Ordinance Number 2006-1, the Colfax County Fire Marshal Larry Osborn hereby declares effective immediately, that the ban on open burning in the Fire Districts in Colfax County, is lifted.
Burn permits are required for all open burning other than recreational fires. A recreational fire is an open fire of 3 foot or less in diameter. Permits may be found on the Colfax County website.

Inaugural Cimarron Challenge
CIMARRON — The Cimarron Challenge, starting and ending in Cimarron, New Mexico is a gravel cycling event through the Carson National Forest’s Valle Vidal Unit and Philmont Boy Scout Ranch will be held, Saturday, August 25. .
Two routes will be offered:
• 78 mile loop with 5860 feet of gain • 66 mile loop with 4046 feet of gain.
The high point on the long route is 9696’. Entries are capped at 250, entry fee is $80 per rider. Registration continues until all 250 spots are filled or August 20, whichever comes first. Entries are transferable for a $10 transfer fee. Registra- tion is on-line only at: www.usacycling.org/register/2018- 1817. fers. This is a non-competitive ride with no age or equipment divisions but will be timed and awards will be given to the top three men and women finishers on the long route. There will be full on-course support including four well-stocked aid stations and SAGs. NORTHEASTERN NEW MEXICO — Join us in 2018 for the sixth year of the Ride for 4-H Clover Friday, August 24 through Sunday, August 26. As in years past, you will have an oppor- tunity to tour and learn about Extension activities. This year the tour will take you to northeastern New Mexico through San Miguel, Quay, Union, Colfax, and Mora counties. We in- vite you to again join and help us increase awareness of the importance of 4-H youth programs and the Cooperative Extension Service.
