HUERFANO

Food drive for Dorcas today

WALSENBURG — Volunteers for Com- munity will be collecting food for the food bank at Dorcas Circle on Thursday, August 16, 1 to 4:30 pm in front of Charlie’s Market. Vol- unteers will be there to receive your non per- ishable food as well as pet food and toiletry items. All donations go to benefit those in our county needing assistance. So bring your extra cans, boxes, packages, jars, bottles, etc. of food or please consider purchasing a few additional items for us when you shop. A big thank you for your past generosity, and we look forward to seeing you. To donate in Wal- senburg, VFC will be accepting food donation items at First Choice on the 1st Friday of the month from 1:00 to 5:00.

WALSENBURG — The Central Committee monthly meeting will be tonight, Thursday, August 16, 5:30 pm at the Walsenburg Hous- ing Authority activity room, 220 Russell Ave- nue. (across from the Outreach Clinic). Guest speaker will be state rep Donald Valdez.

La Veta Library talk on the impact of fire

LA VETA — Mary Cooper is giving a talk on the impact of fire at La Veta Public Library at 2 pm today, Thursday, August 16. She says, “My family was burned in a brush fire near Reno, Nevada 45 years ago. It marked a major turning point in my life and that of my family. I am giving a talk about my experience and what it has taught me at the La Veta Library at 2:00 Thursday, August 16th. I hope to see you there.”

 

Benefit concert tonight for Cuchara Mountain Park

LA VETA — Thursday, August 16, 7 pm come out to La Veta Mercantile for an evening from Bach to Broadway featuring local favorite Andy Hackbarth, guitar/vocals, Jennifer Carr, piano/vocals, Corrie Donovan, soprano and a special guest appearance by the John Mall Choir! This special event is a gift from the per- formers to benefit the Cuchara Mountain Park. Tickets are $12 advance or $15 at the door.

 

Spanish Peaks Farm Stand new hours

WALSENBURG — To accomodate the lunch crowd the Farm Stand is now open from 11 am to 2 pm every Friday at the main entrance of Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center. Did you know you can use your SNAP card at the Spanish Peaks Farm Stand and get matched dollar for dollar, up to $20 per visit. Fridays for Fun: Tie Dye!

LA VETA — Young artists of all ages, join us and learn the art of Tie Dye, Friday, August 17. Bring a cotton shirt or other cotton item to wear or show to tie dye. This is a fun way to explore color creatively while making wear- able art. Please pre-register by calling 719-250- 5653 to reserve your spot. Children under the age of 6 will be welcome in class if accompa- nied by an adult caregiver. Smocks are pro- vided as the inks used are permanent and will stain most fabrics. If you need to fill out pa- perwork, please come 10 minutes early to do so. LVSA is located across from the Town Park and set back from W. Ryus. Pre-register as that class fills up quickly!

 

Lathrop State Park activities:

WALSENBURG — Friday night, August 17, 7 pm at the Piñon Campground amphithe- ater the park naturalist presents Transition Zone, a program about the landforms and life zones of Lathrop State Park and the sur- rounding area. The program includes a 1.75 mile hike.

On Saturday morning, August 18, 9 am at the Piñon Campground amphitheater join the park naturalist in finding clues along a short walk to find answers to a word puzzle. This is a fun activity for families.

On Saturday evening, Lathrop wel- comes back Mission: Wolf director, Kent Weber, who will talk about wolves and wolf/dog hybrids and the work that is done at the sanctuary which was created to pro- vide shelter for captive wolves. He will have with him an ambassador wolf/dog hybrid. The presentation will begin at 7 pm at the Piñon Campground amphitheater.

As always, any vehicle entering Lathrop State Park must have a park pass. If you would like to attend but don’t have a park pass, remember you may check one out of either Spanish Peaks Library or La Veta Li- brary for up to one week. Lathrop State Park is 3 miles west of Walsenburg on Hwy 160.

 

FCPA summer musical “Church Basement Ladies”

LA VETA — Francisco Center for the Per- forming Arts is pleased to announce the re- turn of our summer musical, “Church Basement Ladies” Friday and Saturday, Au- gust 17 and 18, 7 pm and Sunday, August 19, 2 pm. This musical, written by Jim Stowell and Jessica Zuehlke with music and lyrics by Drew Jansen, was inspired by the books of Janet Letnes Martin and Suzann Nelson. SPACe Photography Show

LA VETA — Twenty-five area artists, from La Veta, Cuchara, La Junta, Colorado City, West- cliffe, Weston, McClave, Las Animas, Pueblo, Pueblo West, Denver, and Oakland, CA are sharing their photography in the 2018 Photog- raphy Show at the SPACe Gallery in the Park. LA VETA — The Spanish Peaks Arts Council in La Veta invites artists working in all media to enter the Fall Show. Artwork will be ac- cepted Friday Aug. 17, between 11 am – 3 pm and Sat. Aug. 18.between 10 am – 3 pm at the SPACe Gallery in the Park, 132 W. Ryus. The Fall Show will be on display Aug. 21 – Sept. 22. There is a $5 fee per entry (oversized en- tries $10). Bike and Bark fundraiser at Lathrop

WALSENBURG — Please join SPRHC Lions for Bike and Bark Saturday, August 18 8 to 10 am. Meet at Lathrop State Park visitor center. Walk your dog, ride your bike, walk or run on the beautiful, newly completed, trail around Martin Lake. There will be a dog contest, drawing, doggie bags, and refreshments. Historical tour of the coal camps

SOUTHERN COLORADO — Huerfano County Historical Society is hosting a Mining Camp Tour on Saturday, August 18. Led by Historian Carolyn Newman, participants will spend 4 1/2 to 5 hours visiting Mining Camp sites. It’s bring your own lunch to be enjoyed in Aguilar Park. Final stop is Ludlow. Cost for the tour is $15 per person. Historical Soci- ety members $10. Meet at Walsenburg Mining Museum 8:30 am for registration and car pool- ing. Join us for an educational fun experience!

WALSENBURG — Spanish Peaks Beekeepers will meet Saturday,August 18,1 pm at the La- throp State Park visitor’s center. Our guest speaker will be Tina Sebestyen, Vice President of the Colorado State Beekeeper’s Association. Our topic will be the CO Master Beekeeper’s Program.

HUERFANO — The Huerfano County Board of Commissioners will be holding community meetings with the public, to solicit any needs, suggestions, or comments and to discuss the Judicial Center, including a presentation. The meetings will be held Tuesday, August 21, 5:30 pm at the Huerfano County Community Center, Walsenburg and Tuesday, August 28, 5:30 pm at the La Veta Community Center, La Veta.

Rolling for Freedom

WALSENBURG — The annual motorcycle and poker run, Rolling for Freedom, will be held Saturday, August 25, to raise funds for the veterans at the Spanish Peaks Veterans Community Living Center. Registration will be 9 am at Minit Mart Truck Stop. Kickstands up at 10:30 for parade with John Mall High School Marching Band through Walsenburg to Spanish Peaks Veterans Community Living Center. A Memorial Service with Bikers Prayer, Color Guard, National Anthem and military music played by the John Mall High School Band will follow. Balloon release and Ceremony will be held in the Memorial Gar- den. The Poker Run will start at Sarti’s Bar, go through Gardner To Hwy 96 Road House in Silver Cliff, then on to Obie’s BBQ in Colorado City. This will be our 7th run.

 

La Veta celebrates its 142nd birthday

LA VETA — We are kicking off the birthday celebration Saturday, August 25 with a Parade starting at 11 am. Line up will be 10:30 in the La Veta High School parking lot on Garland St. All groups are welcome to join in the home- town parade.

Hiroya Tsukamoto at La Veta Mercantile

LA VETA — Hiroya Tsukamoto, musician from Kyoto, Japan will perform, Saturday, Au- gust 25, 7 pm at La Veta Mercantile. Hiroya is a one-of-a-kind composer, guitarist and singer-songwriter. He began playing the five- string banjo when he was thirteen, and took up the guitar shortly after. Hiroya will take us on an innovative journey filled with earthy, or- ganic soundscapes that impart a mood of peace and tranquility. Admission: $12.

 

2018 Marathon of the Legends on Aug 26

WALSENBURG — This year’s Marathon of Legends will be held Sunday, August 26, 7:30 am at Miners Plaza, 6th and Main. The race this year will have a 26.2 mile maraghon relay for teams of 2 to 11 people and a 10 mile relay walk for 2 to 5 people. Boncarbo Poker Run

BONCARBO — Saturday, August 18, 8 am to 6 pm the Boncarbo VFD Auxiliary is hosting a Poker Run on to raise funds for radios for our volunteer firefighters. We will have two runs, one is any vehicle, motorcycle or car, driving the Highway of Legends.

The second run is off road, riding through Spanish Peaks Country. Join us at the Bon- carbo fire hall on Saturday!

 

Mysteries of Gyroscopes at the Carnegie

TRINIDAD — One of the most counter-intu- itive contraptions in nature is the gyroscope. This is a program for anyone from 10 to 100 years old. It’s on this coming Monday, August 20, 5 pm in the Community Room. Gyro- scopes are all around us, and I’m not talking about the toy gyroscopes we loved to play with as kids. Anything that turns about an axis will behave with gyroscopic action. Some examples:

~Bicycle wheels
~Floor polishers
~Inertial guidance system components ~Stabilizers for rockets and ships
~The planet earth
Join us for a study of gyroscopes and how they behave. We’ll have amazing demonstra- tions, and lots of fun.

 

Trinidad School District #1 Community Celebration

Chronic pain self-management class

TRINIDAD — A free chronic pain self-management class will be held every Thursday beginning August 23 in the Garden Room at Mt. Carmel Wellness & Community Center. The class runs from 10 am to 1 pm.

Topics covered will include:
· Techniques to deal with fatigue, frustration, isolation and poor sleep
· Exercise tips for maintaining and improving strength, flex- ibility and endurance
· Communicating effectively with family, friends and health professionals
· Managing medications, activity and rest levels
· How to evaluate new treatment
· Setting weekly goals
· Nutrition

This 6-week class helps you deal with the challenges of living with chronic pain. Classes are highly participative, where mutual support and success build the participants’ con- fidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain ac- tive and fulfilling lives. The Chronic Pain Self-Management Program was developed at Stanford University.

Paul Milosevich art opening at Trinidad State Show

TRINIDAD — Artist Paul Milosevich will return to his home town for a reception and art show opening on Friday, August 24 at the President’s Office at Trinidad State Junior College in Trinidad with his Fishers Peak Series. The free reception will run from 4 to 5 pm in the office of Trinidad State President Dr. Carmen Simone, in the Berg Building, Room 218. Light re- freshments will be served. The paintings will be on display through December 21 during normal office hours, 8 am to noon and 1 to 5 pm Monday through Friday. See article page 16.

 

Trinidaddio Blues PreFest

TRINIDAD — Friday, August 24, 6:30 pm the Trinidaddio Blues Prefest will happen in Downtown Trinidad. ·Last year the PreFest Party became a FREE Event! This year we will carry on that tradition bringing the Blues to the historic streets of Downtown Trinidad.

The party will get started as always with the winner of the Colorado Blues Challenge in May…graciously provided by the Colorado Blues Society! Next up will be the phenome- nal Maggie Rains and The Crooked Keys from Alamosa, CO.

 

Trinidaddio Blues Fest

TRINIDAD — Trinidaddio Blues Fest will take place Sat- urday, August 25, at Central Park. The gates open at 11 am and the music begins at noon. Steeped in the traditions of Chi- cago Blues and New Orleans, Trinidaddio’s Line up always provides a powerful mix of artists and an abundance of talent.

You will not want to miss this one. It’s going to be great! The 2018 line up includes Grammy-nominated artists Robert Randolph & the Family Band, Kenny Neal, C.J. Public Notice— Fire Ban lifted

COLFAX — Upon consultation with the Fire Chiefs of Colfax County, and under the authority of Colfax County Ordinance Number 2006-1, the Colfax County Fire Marshal Larry Osborn hereby declares effective immediately, that the ban on open burning in the Fire Districts in Colfax County, is lifted.

Burn permits are required for all open burning other than recreational fires. A recreational fire is an open fire of 3 foot or less in diameter. Permits may be found on the Colfax County website.

Inaugural Cimarron Challenge

CIMARRON — The Cimarron Challenge, starting and ending in Cimarron, New Mexico is a gravel cycling event through the Carson National Forest’s Valle Vidal Unit and Philmont Boy Scout Ranch will be held, Saturday, August 25. .

Two routes will be offered:
• 78 mile loop with 5860 feet of gain • 66 mile loop with 4046 feet of gain.

The high point on the long route is 9696’. Entries are capped at 250, entry fee is $80 per rider. Registration continues until all 250 spots are filled or August 20, whichever comes first.
