A howling good time at La Veta Public Library

ANOTHER FULL HOUSE AT LA VETA LIBRARY! Laura McGehee and Charles Mandemaker (left and right above), with the Mission: Wolf sanctuary provided an overview of the group’s mission on February 1 at La Veta Public Library.

McGehee and Mandemaker gave a background of Mission: Wolf and its purpose: to care for captive-born wolves and wolf-dogs, while educating the public about the importance of keeping wild animals wild.

The two discussed the portrayal of the wolf in mythology, legend, and literature, grappling with the question of why this animal has captivated hearts and minds for centuries (in both positive and negative ways).

They also discussed the importance of a connection with nature and the wild when tackling creative projects. McGehee and Mandemaker and the attendees then took a short break and had a smaller, more intimate group convene for a writers workshop, writing from prompts that focused on the wolf as inspiration in our daily creative practices.

Mission: Wolf, located in the remote mountains between Gardner and Westcliffe, “connects people with nature through volunteer internships and national traveling education programs”. For more information on Mission: Wolf, check out their website: http://www.missionwolf.org.
