TRINIDAD — The 7th Annual Rotary Club Golf Tourney to help the children of Trinidad & Las Animas County was a huge success for the Rotary Club of Trinidad. The Rotarians once again raised money for the club’s program to purchase a dictionary for every third grader in Trinidad & Las Animas County.
When retired Third Judicial District Judge Jesse Manzanares, a past president of the Trinidad Rotary Club, came up with the idea for raising money for dictionaries for the kid in Las Animas County school districts, the response fromthe club’s members was unanimous.
“This is great for the kids, and this was a great afternoon to play!” Manzanares stated. “ The Trinidad Rotary Club looks forward to doing the work which helps make this benefit tournament a huge success every year.”
Ryanna Coberly, now 18 years old and ready to launch her studies in nursing at Northern Colorado University this fall, was having a good time at the golf course. The co-valedictorian of the 2017 graduation class at Hoehne High School was the recipient of one of those dictionaries way back then. Her Dad’s team won the championship of the first flight.
“It’s cool that the Rotary Club holds this tournament to benefit all those kids in the whole county,” said Coberly. “It was fun to watch my dad (Ryan Coberly). I hope they continue to do this for our future third graders forever. I really appreciated that gift in third grade. It sure helped me academically.”
Makloski Motors won the championship of the one- day event. It was joked that the Rotarians were so excited with Makloski’s contribution they made sure his gang of hackers would be successful! “My teammates were playing well, except for Dick on the first tee,”according to teammate Ronnie Roberts. “They played well but I was terrible. We had a good time.”
Manzanares’ idea for an annual tourney is in stride with the Rotary Club’s national dictionary program which has given millions of third grader’s dictionaries, purchased by local clubs for $12 each.
The tournament raises roughly $2,000 each year, allowing the Trinidad Rotary Club to purchase the dictionaries in October to be distributed in December just before the holidays. About 185 dictionaries are given out each year. No less than 169 and as many as 204 have been given out in any one year.
