Huerfano RE-1 Music Department rocks the house

by Ruth Orr
WALSENBURG — The Huerfano RE-1 music program is absolutely rocking it!  Despite the small size of our district, the program is ever growing, and offers an incredible range of musical options for students from elementary through high school.
Last Wednesday, the Spanish Peaks Jazz Band performed in John Mall’s cafeteria.  Despite this being the first year of learning their instrument for roughly half of the students performing, they nailed every song.  We can only expect more amazing things from the group!
On Monday evening, the budding musicians at Peakview joined forces with some of the high school students for the area’s first ever ‘Instrument Zoo’.  Seated around the Peakview cafeteria by section, the students demonstrated what their instruments looked and sounded like to a crowd of excited onlookers.  A couple of competitions, judged by the audience, had the kids face off in who was able to play the best, and who could play the loudest.  The evening was fun and enjoyable for everyone who attended.
Tomorrow, Friday March 23, be sure to come out for the second annual Southern Colorado Winds Festival.  The concert will take place in the auditorium of the Washington School building, located at 201 E. Fifth Street in Walsenburg.  Doors will open at 1 pm, the concert starts at 1:15.  The students have been working incredibly hard to prepare some truly epic music, so get ready to support our kids and have a fantastic afternoon.  It’s a free concert, so you have no excuse to not come.  You won’t regret it!
