Springer, has won the American STAR Library award from the Library Journal.  The Library Journal is an American trade publication for librarians.  It was founded in 1876 by Melvin Dewey (familiar as the inventor of the Dewey Decimal System). It reports various news about local and nationwide libraries.  Their main focus is public libraries, and offers feature articles about aspects of professional practice. It also reviews library-related materials and equipment.

In New Mexico, there are only four libraries that received this honor.  Out of thousands of libraries in the state, Springer’s local library has been one of those four, to received state and national recognition.
“It’s an honor to be able to have acknowledgement for our town’s library” says librarian Norma Vigil.  Vigil has been the librarian for about 19 years.  The community can attribute the library’s recognition of this award to Vigil.  She works diligently every day in the library to make it what it is, a top notch place for the community, and travelers to come by to learn.  The criteria on which the Library Journal based their decision to make Fred Macaron one of the top tier state and national, are visits recorded, program attendance and public internet use. This past 2017 the library moved from four to five stars along with Elgin Public Library in Iowa.
