2 A: Road to State

by David Tesitor

HUERFANO, LAS ANIMAS COUNTIES — The qualifying bars for state changed this past week at many schools were able to compete before the rain and snow fell last weekend. The goal of a state berth just got harder as athletes in the running have put forth their best efforts as the standings have once again changes. In events where qualifying and staying home can be measured by hundredths of a second or a few inches, these aspiring athletes have two weeks remaining before state.

Garrett Quintana remains the number one discus thrower in 2A, while teammate Andrew Vigil is 2nd. Vigil moved closer to Quintana last week in the discus with a personal best throw of 164 feet- 5 inches. Quintana also had a monster throw of 52 feet in the shot put at the Ray Headley Tournament to take over as number one in that event, too. The following list shows the top 20 area athletes and their placement in their respective fields. To qualify, one must be 18th or better.
