1A Invitational seeds final qualifiers

Three Mason sibs from Kim head for state

by David Tesitor

LIMON — One of the biggest disadvantages in a “last chance” invitational is that it usually involves only athletes from the same classification. That was what happened in Limon last weekend as Kim finished their regular season at the 1A Invitational.

With state seeding for only the top nine in the shorter races and top 12 in the longer, athletes needed to either improve on their best time and or finish in the top one or two.

Leader Zariah Mason skipping the day because she was marching down the gym floor graduating from Kim, already having qualified in three events. This left the door open for others.

The final 1A standings saw many changes, including some from Kim and La Veta dropping off the list. Outside of the athletes already qualified, no Mustang improved their marks to advance to state.

The Kim athletes have worked hard this season and, while they did not all advance, their contributions for their team will be remembered.

Besides Mason, the Lady Mustangs who did not qualify in individual events will race for the relay team which did qualify.

Competing in the 100M dash were Sidney Goode who finished seventh (14.08 sec) and Tori Goode, finishing 12th (14.78 sec). T. Goode also finished sixth in the 800M (2:41.54). S. Goode was fifth in the triple jump with a jump of 30-7.50 feet.

The Mason brothers will go to state despite lackluster performances at the 1A Invite. While they did not come forth with their best times, Zion Mason finished fifth in the 100M (11.92) and fifth in the 200M (24.15). He was also fifth in the high jump (5-7 feet). His brother, Zephan Mason was 12th in the 100M (12.28) and was fourth in the long jump (18-7.75 feet).
