Virtual U.S. Service Academy and ROTC information session.

OUR WORLD — Tuesday, Sept. 15, 5 to 7 p.m. the five Service Academies (U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy) and four college ROTC Programs (Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, Navy) will host a Virtual U.S. Service Academy and ROTC information session. The event is free and open to the public.

This event provides the opportunity for parents and students to join representatives from the Academies and ROTC Programs regarding the various Academy and ROTC/NROTC application processes, attending a military academy or ROTC/NROTC pro- gram, and serving as a commissioned officer in the United States Armed Forces. This is also an opportunity to hear from representatives of the Congressional Delegations regarding how they can assist students gain a nomination to a Service Academy.

The Military Service Academies are federally funded institutions. All students receive a full scholarship including tuition, room and board, and complete medical coverage.

 

Gallagher Amendment informational webinars

OUR WORLD — Downtown Colorado Inc. (DCI) and the Economic Development Council of Colorado (EDCC) have teamed up once again to establish and present educational content to build awareness and informed action on the Gallagher Amendment in advance of the November election as the Colorado Gallagher Amendment Repeal and Property Tax Assessment Rates Measure has made it to November’s ballot.

Wednesday, Sept. 22, 4 p.m., DCI’s Big Talks Series features Joe Minicozzi of Urban 3 who will dive into Colorado Tax Policy, what our policies encourage, and what Gallagher and TABOR will mean in a post pandemic economy.

The Future of Fiscal Health will be on tap Wednesday, Sept. 30, 8:30 a.m.. Join us for a panel discussion with Urban Representatives, moderated by Reeves Brown, who will dis- cuss the unintended consequences of the statewide amendment which has adverse impacts on Colorado’s metro areas across the state.

Calling all seamstresses (and seamsters)

OUR WORLD — Mt. Rose Health Center Palliative Care and Hospice. serving Huerfano and Las Animas County, is looking for caring seamstresses to volunteer to help craft simple bears out of fabric that belonged to a loved one who has passed on. The bears can provide comfort to people of all ages and the fabric will remind them of their beloved. It is a great project and a great way to be involved in Hospice work. Ricky Tims presents new novel at book signing event

LA VETA — Southern Colorado quilter and musician, Ricky Tims, will launch his fantasy novel for the young and young at heart in a one-day book signing of his newly-released novel, Lizzy Albright and the Attic Window, Saturday, Sept. 12, 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Tims Art Retreat Center, 105 W Ryus Avenue. The event will be held outdoors in the front courtyard. Social distancing will be enforced, and attendees are required to wear masks.

The fantasy novel, co-written by Ricky Tims and Kat Bowser, will be available for sale at the event. Ricky offers to personalize and autograph books upon request and will allow socially distanced photo opportunities. The story is targeted to middle grades and young adults of all ages. It has been described as Harry Potter meets The Wizard of Oz meets Alice in Wonderland. The story’s heroine is Lizzy Albright, a red-headed, freckle-faced girl from Overland Park, Kansas, who is celebrating her tenth birthday on Christmas Eve 1964.

The book includes an antique quilt, a talking goose, and the cursed Kingdom of Ailear, and many unexpected twists and turns. With the publication of this book, Tims adds novelist to his long list of creative endeavors. Fall Show and reception at SPACe

LA VETA — The Spanish Peaks Arts Council invites everyone to the Fall Show, with featured artists Rebecca Meyers, Hugh Keating and Carrie Fox now through Oct. 3. Due to Health Dept. requirements, only 10 people at a time are allowed inside, face coverings, and social distancing are required, so no refreshments.

Rebecca Meyers is showing an amazing collection of Native American and African cultures’ masks, created from clay and re-purposed materials. Along the same lines, Gary Weston has new fantastical works also from re-purposed materials. Hugh Keating is showing some of his crayon and acrylic works featuring loosely rendered architectural scenes on canvas, and Carrie Fox has included contemporary embroidery and photography “sketches” inspired by the rivers and wildlife in Huerfano and Las Animas counties. Other area artists sharing their original art are Kathy Hill, Ann Gethen, Cathy Mullens, Pat Newell, Karen Voepel, Kenny Schneider, Barb Kowalik, Jim Lambert, Gordon “Shorty” Schockey, Martha Lancaster, and Linda Shelley.

 

Lathrop hosts coat, hat, and glove drive

WALSENBURG — Lathrop State Park is hosting a winter clothing drive for boys and girls during the month of September. All clothing will be distributed to our local Huerfano County schools: Peakview, Gardner, and La Veta. We need us- able hats, gloves, and coats for boys and girls. There are three drop off locations: Lathrop State Park visitor center; Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center, 23500 US Hwy 160; and JM Tire, 928 Main Street. WALSENBURG — A candidate forum presented by KSPK Radio will be a LIVE Broadcast on the radio station, 102.3 and live streamed on the Fox Theatre Walsenburg page, Monday, Sept. 14, 6 p.m. The in-person event is not open to the public, only candidates and the staff required to produce the event.

 

Joyful walking & intuitive movement

LA VETA — We walk and make, with gentle, intuitive movement, stops along the way each Tuesday morning, 10 to 11:30 a.m. with yoga teacher Ruth, dance instructor Ashley, and peach pilgrim Laura. American Legion Blood Drive / Vietnam Veteran Commemoration

WALSENBURG — The American Legion, Post 16 will be host- ing a Community Blood Drive on National POW/MIA Remembrance Day, Friday, September 18, 10 a.m to 2 p.m. at the Huerfano County Community Center, 928 Russell Avenue. It is highly recommended that if you desire to donate blood that you make an appointment by calling Vitalant at 1-800-365- 0006, ext. 2 or online at www.Vitalant.org. If you use the online option, you can fill out a medical questionnaire to bring with you on the date of the appointment. The American Red Cross has determined that there is a nationwide Blood shortage and your donation would be greatly appreciated.

We will also honor Vietnam War Era Veterans who served in the military between November 1, 1955 and May 15th, 1975. Veterans who served during that period can come to the Community Center and pick up a Commemorative Pin, Certificate and “thanks” from a grateful nation for your service. To re- member the Prisoners of War (POW) and Missing In Action (MIA) a small table will be set up in the Gymnasium to memorialize the over 81,900 US Service Members of our military still Missing or Unaccounted for from WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War and other conflicts.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s

WALSENBURG — Join us Saturday, Sept. 19, 8 to 10 a.m. at Lathrop State Park. The walk helps raise funds and awareness to provide care and support services, prevention, treatment and ultimately, a cure for Alzheimer’s. We invite you to participate in two ways: Grab your sneakers and join us. Just meet us at the main entrance, under the pergola. You must wear a mask during registration and we will be social distancing. LA VETA — No Oktoberfest in La Veta this year, but your Oktoberfest committee friends are at it again with a special fund- raiser to end the summer. special event will be held on the lawn of the Grandote Peaks Golf Course near the clubhouse. Please bring your own chairs, blankets, drinks and refreshments and get ready for a great evening! Trinidad School District 1 announces universal free breakfast and lunch

TRiNiDAD — Trinidad School District 1 is participating in a Universal Lunch and School Breakfast Program for the current school year. If your children attend TSD 1, breakfast and lunch will be available to them at no charge. All students enrolled at this school may participate.

Studies show that children who are not hungry perform better in school. By providing lunch to all children at no charge, we are hoping to create a better learning environment for our students.

The school breakfasts and lunches we serve follow U.S. Dept. of Agriculture guidelines for healthy school meals. The School Breakfast and Lunch Program cannot succeed without your support; please encourage your children to participate in the school meal programs.

Meals will be served to all students at no charge regardless of eligibility status. Due to the Covid 19 pandemic and the on- line learning students can pick up meals at the Eckhart Elementary School ONLY. We will not be providing meals for anyone other than enrolled students in our district. Adults may still purchase a meal for $3.75.

If it is possible we would appreciate the parents call 719- 845-2051 from 8 to 10 a.m. Monday -Friday if you are going to pick up meals for your children so that we can prepare enough food. Paws in the Park canceled but low cost vaccinations available

TRiNiDAD — Due to the coronavirus pandemic, NAAWA did not host Paws in the Park during Labor Day weekend this year. Many pets rely upon the Paws in the Park event for annual vaccinations, microchips, and city licensing. Pets needing vaccines, microchipping, or city licensing can still get them at our daily low-cost clinic. Make an appointment for your pet at 719-680-2385 so that your pet will be up to date on every- thing they need. We are exploring the option of hosting a similar event that will be combined with Santa Paws for mid-fall. But don’t wait to get your pet vaccines – it is very important for them to be protected against disease.

AGUiLAR — The Aguilar Public Library is open allowing one patron at a time with the required safety measures in place: A face covering must be worn at all times while in the library and a 6 ft distance between each computer will be practiced and cleaned after each use. Colfax County Rapid Response meeting

RATON — The next meeting of the Colfax County Rapid Response volunteer firefighting community based organization will be tonight, Thursday, Sept. 10, 7 p.m. at the Colfax County Courthouse, 230 North 3rd Street. Currently we engage in wild land and structural fires. When called upon we serve a civic duty, which is to protect the communities and citizens in Colfax County. Colfax County Rapid Response meets on the second and fourth Thursdays.

 

44th Annual InBank Virtual Exhibition & Sale

RATON — The 44th Annual InBank Exhibition and Sale will be virtual this year. Artists can drop off works Friday, September 11, 12 – 4 p.m. at The Old Pass Gallery, 145 S. 1st Street. Masks are required when dropping off work.

The show opens online Tuesday, Sept. 15, through Friday, September 18. Since the show will be virtual this year due to statewide mandates and COVID safe practices, there will not be any in-person viewing of the show and there will also not be a reception this year. However, the show must go on, so we will be selling all pieces through our online gallery. This will give our artists a nationwide audience.

Curbside book signing at Arthur Johnson Library

RATON — Author Patricia H. Walsh will hold a special Curb- side Book Signing in front of the Arthur Johnson Memorial Library Saturday, September 12, 2 to 4 p.m. She will be autographing her new mystery “Kiss the Snake” set on the southern border of New Mexico and featuring snake expert and ex-cop Sam Flynn who stumbles across a dead horse that unearths a clue to a missing girl.

Patricia Walsh is a park ranger and former journalist living in Northern New Mexico. Her nature-based mysteries feature stories of wildlife and Native People with a touch of history thrown in. The first three people to buy an auto- graphed copy of “Kiss the Snake” will receive a free copy of her book “A Prairie Mourning”. Customers need not leave their cars – Ms. Walsh will deliver curbside. The price of “Kiss the Snake” is $12.00.

 

Hungry Hearts lunch on Saturdays

RATON — Hungry Hearts will resume serving lunch every Saturday at St. Vincent de Paul thrift store location, 401 S. 4th St. Free lunches will be served on a drive-through, take-out only basis from 12 to 1 p.m. (while supplies last, first come- first served). Walk-up guests will be served as well. We ask that all guests, whether drive up or walk up, please wear masks. As always, lunches are free and anyone is welcome. Drive-through guests should enter from the north end of the thrift store parking lot.

USDA Farm Bill virtual meeting

COLFAX COUNTY — The Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCD’s) invite you to participate in the local work- group being hosted by Colfax SWCD in cooperation with the Mora/Wagon Mound SWCD. Western Mora SWCD & Tierra Y Montes SWCD Thursday, September 17, 10 a.m.. This meet- ing will be held through a Zoom meeting due to the COVID- 19 Pandemic for social distancing guidelines. The Local Work Group will provide input to the SWCD’s and the Natural Conservation Service (NRCS) on the EQIP implementation for Colfax, Mora, and San Miguel Counties. Members of this workgroup include federal and state agencies, as well as local and statewide organizations.

 

Capulin Dark Sky Festival

CAPULiN — Join us for an exceptional Dark Sky experience Saturday, Sept. 18, 7:30 p.m. at Capulin Volcano National Monument. Capulin was named a Gold Tier Dark Sky Park by the International Dark Sky Association in 2016. Giant telescopes are provided by us, and the dark northeastern New Mexico skies by nature. You will see planets, galaxies, nebula, and other amazing sights all with your own eyes.

Capulin Volcano is at a higher altitude of over 6,000 feet. Nights can get chilly even in summer. A jacket, long pants, and closed toe shoes are recommended to attend a Dark Sky pro- gram. No reservations are needed. Call 575-278-2201 for more information.

CiMARRON — Open Hands Thrift Store, 357 E 9th Street, will be open Fridays and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.. Customers must wear masks and only 3 shoppers allowed inside at a time for social distancing guidelines.

We are only taking donations on Friday and Saturdays. If items are left at the shed they must be thrown away, so please follow the safety and drop off guidelines. We will take furniture by appointment, please call the numbers on the door. Thank you for helping us get through this time.

Senior Week at the Pueblo Zoo

PUEBLO — The Pueblo Zoo is celebrating local citizens 65 and older by giving them free admission to the Pueblo Zoo during Senior Week, Sunday, Sept. 6 through Saturday, Sept.-12. The zoo will be open from 9 am to 5 pm, with last admission at 4 pm. Needed caregivers/aids will also be admitted free of charge. For the safety of our guests, staff, and animals, face coverings are required while visiting the zoo. (Bandana, scarf, home-made masks, face shield, etc. – Applicable to ages 3 years old and up). Groups must practice social distancing while visiting the zoo by remaining at least 6 feet from other groups. Groups shall be no larger than 10 people.

Seniors receive a 15% discount on all items at the kiosks and gift shop. We welcome you to bring food and coolers into the zoo for Senior Week. Coolers may be held in the admin building, if desired.
