LAS ANIMAS/HUERFANO COUNTIES — Mt. Rose Health Center Palliative Care and Hospice is planning a fall volunteer training, Friday November 13 (note date change) in Trinidad. We are seeking volunteers both for Huerfano and Las Animas Counties. There are many roles individuals can fill that provide invaluable support not only to patients, but perhaps even more so to families. In home volunteers may spend a few hours a week providing companionship, respite for family members, reading to patient, helping record their stories and the all-important role of being a good listener. All volunteer work does not need to be done in the home; errands can be run, weeds pulled, a dog walked, a meal cooked, administrative help in the office are just a few of the many other things that keep hospice wheels turning If you want to be part of an amazing organization doing great work please give me a call. Children of the Inquisition: online screening event and discussion
OUR WORLD — Temple Aaron of Trinidad Colorado will be screening the documentary film Children of the Inquisition in an online event Saturday, Oct. 24. You’ll have 48 hours to view the film: 5 pm MT on 10/22/20 to 5 pm MT 10/24/20.
After watching the film, join us Sat. Oct. 24, 6 pm for a live (via Zoom) discussion with Peabody award-winning producer Joseph Lovett. Joining him will be Carlos de Madeiros, a contemporary descendant featured in the film, and Corinne Brown (Vice President of Communications at Society for Crypto-Judaic Studies and Editor of their journal, HaLapid).

Dining with Diabetes Challenge free four-week email program
OUR WORLD — Do you want to learn how to manage your diabetes with updated information? Dining with Diabetes invites you to enroll in an e-mail Challenge. This 4-week pro- gram will encourage individuals with diabetes to improve their diabetes selfcare behaviors and learn: What is diabetes? What are carbohydrates and how many can I have? How to build a support system.
Participants will receive two weekly emails from Extension faculty to share diabetes health practices, recipes, goal setting and support to increase knowledge, try new approaches, and receive virtual support through a private Facebook group and local Extension staff.

Nominate students for the Future Leaders Award
HUERFANO/LAS ANIMAS COUNTIES — Applications are being accepted now for the 2020-2021 FUTURE LEADERS pro- gram, presented by CBS4 and PDC Energy, to recognize Col- orado high school students excelling in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics.)
Teachers, parents, mentors, and others are encouraged to nominate students who they believe will be Colorado’s future STEM leaders. Nominations will be accepted on an ongoing basis now through April 2021. One student will be selected each month to receive this special recognition award that includes a $1,000 and a student profile on CBS4.
STEM studies may include, but are not limited to the fields of biology, chemistry, computer and information technology science, geosciences, life sciences, mathematical sciences, physics and astronomy, anthropology, ecology, economics, robotics, civil engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, electronics, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, aerospace engineering, chemical engineering, astrophysics.
Nominations should include basic information on the student as well as information on the student’s STEM field of study/focus, and any extraordinary circumstances/obstacles the student has had to overcome in order to pursue his/her STEM studies. HUERFANO/LAS ANIMAS COUNTIES — The 3rd Judicial District (Huerfano and Las Animas counties), Colorado Legal Services, and volunteer attorneys will host three virtual events on Tuesday, October 27, as part of Legal Resource Week, sponsored by Colorado Judicial Institute.
Residents of the district representing themselves in civil cases will have an opportunity from 1-6 p.m. to speak, free of charge, with an attorney during a 25-minute phone consultation. Attorney Consultations are by appointment only. These consultations are for informational purposes only and do not constitute attorney-client relationships.

WALSENBURG — Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center is pleased to offer the public a series of FREE classes to help those with diabetes improve their health by learning more about self- care.

Ann Klikus 4-H Scholarship now available
LA VETA —A donation of $200 in memory of Ann Klikus, rancher’s wife, homemaker and La Veta School Head Cook was received by the Huerfano County Extension Office to honor her lifelong commitment to the students and community of La Veta. The donation will be used for scholarships to support 4- H youth in the Snowy Range 4-H Club in La Veta. The monies were donated to assist 4-H’ers in the La Veta club who need financial help with their 4-H enrollment, attending conferences, camps, or leadership events. To apply for the scholarship funds, youth in the Snowy Range 4-H club can contact the Huerfano County Extension Office. The Huerfano County Ex- tension Office and the 4-H program would like to thank the anonymous donor who has entrusted these funds to us.

A Spooky Comedy Showcase with Jordan Doll and friends!
TRINIDAD — Jordan Doll is a standup comedian, actor and writer from Denver, Colorado where he is a regular at the world famous Comedy Works. Doll will be performing Saturday, Oct. 24, 7 p.m. at Southern Colorado Repertory Theatre (SCRT).

Safe Trick or Treat Drive Thru Art Car Scare A Thon
TRINIDAD — Halloween in Trinidad will look a little different this year. The annual Safe Trick-or-Treats for Kids and Costume Contest usually held downtown will not be taking place. Instead, families are invited to a “Safe Trick-or-Treat Drive- Thru Art Car Scare-a-Thon” Friday, October 30, 3:30 to 5 p.m. at the Las Animas County Fairgrounds.
In cooperation with the Art Cartopia Museum, the City of Trinidad Police Department, and Las Animas County Sheriff’s Department, The First National Bank in Trinidad plans to sponsor this “reverse parade” with the hope to keep everyone safe. Cars full of parents and children will drive around the perimeter of the fairgrounds to view the “Spooktakular” Art Cars that will be parked along the route. Trinidad merchants have donated enough candy to fill 1,000 bags of treats that will be handed out to the youthful occupants in the cars as they drive out.

DCA launches new online portal for “Invite an Educator” program
SANTA FE – The New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) has launched a new website devoted to the Invite a DCA Educator program. This new online portal simplifies the process of welcoming an expert from one of the divisions of the DCA into a virtual classroom setting.
By visiting https://dcaeducates.nmculture.org and filling out a request form, school teachers, homeschool in- structors, afterschool clubs, and community organizations can schedule an online visit from an educator to discuss a variety of subjects related to the DCA. The new website allows users to navigate through available programs via presenter, age group, or topic.
