Peach fundraiser for SCCY
WALSENBURG — Sangre de Cristo Center for Youth taking orders now for peach orders to be delivered in August. These peaches are tree ripened, hand-picked Western Slope #1 peaches. This yearly fundraiser is important for the SCCY pro- grams presented throughout the year. 10 pound boxes are $23 ($8 for SCCY, tax deductible) and 18 pound boxes are $36 ($12 for SCCY). LA VEtA — Delicious, #1 Palisade peaches will be available again this summer. La Veta United Methodist Church is proud to serve the communities of Cuchara and La Veta in managing peach orders for 2019. We are currently receiving pre-orders; 10 lb. box – $20 ($5.75 for Outreach, tax deductible). Orders must be in by Saturday, August 3. Pickup date will be Sunday, August 18. Any orders not picked up by Tuesday, August 20 will be considered a donation and provided to the veterans home in Walsenburg. Cuchara’s annual 4th of July Parade and street party
CUChARA — As always the parade will start at 11 am, Thursday, July 4. There will be music on the street as well as barbecue lunches available directly after the parade. Kids games begin at 12:30 pm, this event is located in the park across the bridge on Main Street. The Miniature Golf tournament at the Bears Den starts at 1:30 pm and the Corn Hole Tournament at the Dog Bar starts at 1:30 pm. Participants in the tournaments must register at least one hour ahead to qualify.
Walsenburg 4th of July Block Party
WALSENBURG — Bring the family to Heritage Park on Main Street for a Independence Day block party! The family fun be- gins at 11:30 am and will end at 4 pm. There will be burgers, hot dogs, and ice cream from community vendors, or bring your own picnic food. A jousting arena with games, a bounce house, giant slide ring toss cornhole and more will be set up. Lots of fun for all ages: a kids’ bike decorating contest and parade, best pie contest, face painting, and bands. At 5 pm there will be music by Dynamix and Kurt Corsair with food trucks, vendors, and a beer garden!
4th of July & weekend at Lathrop
WALSENBURG — The Atzlan Southwest Dancers return to Lathrop State Park on July the 4th. As always the group will entertain and educate Lathrop visitors with a mix of stories, dance, drumming and history. This is presentation should not be missed. The program will precede the fireworks display and begin at 7:30 pm at the northeast corner of the Martin Lake boat ramp parking lot.
Friday, July 5, Christa Penn presents Colorado Carousels, a program about the story of Colorado’s historic and modern carousels and where one can go to ride them; told through colorful and lovely images. This presentation will begin at 8:15 pm at the Visitor Center.
Saturday morning, July 6 families can have fun taking part in the Code Breakers Hike. Participants will take a short hike along the trail to find clues to decipher a coded message. The activity will begin at 9 am at the Piñon Campground Amphi- theater.
Saturday evening, July 6, 8:15 pm at the Piñon Camp- ground Amphitheater geologist Brian Penn returns with his educational and entertaining presentation about the geology of the Spanish Peaks region. In the event of rain, the Saturday evening presentation will be moved to the Visitor Center.
As always, any vehicle in the State Park must display a park pass. If you would like to attend but don’t have a park pass, remember you may check one out of either Spanish Peaks Library or La Veta Library for up to one week. Lathrop State Park is located on Hwy 160, approximately three miles west of Walsenburg.
4th of July Fireworks at Lathrop
WALSENBURG — Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center, in collaboration with Lathrop State Park, will be hosting this year’s 4th of July Fireworks show Thursday, July 4, at dusk. This year’s Fireworks Display will be shot off over Martin Lake. This should be an awesome show this year! Be sure to enjoy the many county wide events scheduled during the day to celebrate our independence. Plan to finish the day with a fantastic fireworks display over Martin Lake! Parks passes are required.

Independence Day Parade and Push Boat Race

Crooked Hook Blacksmith at the Fort
LA VEtA — Francisco Fort Museum is featuring the Crooked Hook Blacksmith in our working forge on Saturday, July 6th from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Mike Kernor (aka The Crooked Hook Blacksmith) comes to us from just the other side of the Spanish Peaks near Aguilar, Colorado. He will demonstrate his amazing craftsmanship skills as he creates items from scratch. His works are displayed in galleries around the south- west as well as in the museum gift shop and bookstore.
Be sure to also visit our 1855 historic blacksmith shop, our 1862 adobe fort, the one room 1876 log school house and more at 306 S. Main St. The museum is open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
Upper Purgatory Hike
CUChARA — The next hike from Cuchara Recreation is Monday, July 8, 9 am to 3 pm. All hikes meet at the Cuchara Community Center, 16500 CO 12. Bring lunch, rain gear, and appropriate shoes.
After meeting at the Recreation Center, we drive up to a 4 wheel drive road between Blue and Bear Lake. This hike is a consistently up hill hike (until we come back after lunch). We take frequent rests so that everyone can keep up and enjoy the hike. For the first section of our travels we follow the jeep road that goes to Trinchera Peak. We break off the jeep road and follow the Purgatory trail down hill for a bit. On this hike we get to hike into another county and see the old log fence marking the boundary between Huerfano and Las Animas counties. Our final destination, off the Wildcat trail, is a beautiful ridge with a great view of the valley and the neighboring mountains. We often see elk herds in this large alpine meadow. It can be cool and windy at our lunch spot atop the ridge so remember to bring layers! The view from this spot is awe inspiring! For more information: cucharavalleyrec.com

Bomber Hike
CUChARA — A very special, all uphill, hike to visit the debris from the 1943 crash of a B- 24 bomber will be held Thursday, July 11, 9 am to 3 pm. All hikes meet at the Cuchara Community Center, 16500 CO 12. Bring lunch, rain gear, and appropriate shoes.
There is no formal trail leading to the wreckage so this creates some difficult hiking. We follow a small stream for about a mile so it can be a very muddy and slick hike. Near the site of the crash we begin to climb a ridge which is much steeper, and again without a trail. We start seeing pieces of the B-24 which covers a large area of the ridge.
It was a trainer plane traveling from El Paso to Pueblo, and went down in March of 1943. It a touching and profound sight to see all the pieces of the wreckage scattered across the mountain side. This hike is not long, but difficult because it a bushwhacking, steep hike. For more info: cucharavalleyrec.com

Somatic Rejuvenation practice uses slow, gentle, sliding and gliding movements while lying on a mat. Huerfano Soup is a monthly community- based potluck where participants, through this micro-granting dinner, assist a variety of projects in Huerfano County. A potluck item and a $5 donation makes you eligible to vote on the evening’s presentations. As a diner, you will hear 3 five-minute pitches from community members who need funding for projects that are beneficial to the community. Free sports physicals at the Family Medicine Clinic
WALSENBURG — Jerriann Vigil PA and Regina Griego NP will be providing free sports physicals to Huerfano County Student/Athletes in need. The physicals will be performed at The Family Medicine Clinic, 100 West 4th Street on Friday, July 12 and Friday, July 19, 12 pm to 5 pm. There will be no scheduling necessary, exam will be performed in the order the student/athlete arrives and has all of the necessary paperwork completed. A parent/ legal guardian must accompany the student/ athlete.
Lathrop calendar photo contest entry deadline 7/12
WALSENBURG — We’re looking for amateur and professional photographers to submit photos of Lathrop State Park for a 2020 calendar. A panel made up of park staff will choose approximately 24 images which will include a cover photo, one photo for each month, and smaller inset images. The theme for the 2020 calendar will be “The Flora and Fauna of Lathrop State Park.” So, of course, we will be looking primarily for images of plants and animals, but we will also accept landscape photographs which feature animals or particular plants & plant communities (i.e. Piñon/juniper woodland).
There is no fee to enter. As compensation, winners will receive a free calendar once they are printed later this year. The chosen images will not be used for any other purpose other than the Lathrop State Park 2020 calendar, unless other arrangements were made with an individual photographer.
The contest is open to the general public to both amateur and professional photographers. All photos must be original and taken by the submitting entrant at Lathrop State park. Entries need to be submitted in a digital format no later than Friday, July 12.

With the photo entry, please supply us with the photographer’s name, address, e- mail and phone number. Navajo sand painting
LA VEtA — The La Veta School of the Arts is offering Navajo Sand Painting on Saturday, July 13 OR Sunday, July 14. Sharona Nova will teach this one-day workshop that is an exploration of the symbolism, balance, harmony, and symmetry created in Navajo sand paint- ing. The morning will be spent learning about Navajo culture and the history of sand paint- ing. In the afternoon, each student will create a sand painting. Through this act, participants will gain a better understanding of Navajo values and find balance in their own lives. Sharona Nova has been an artist her whole life. She has been teaching Navajo Sand Paint- ing, The Art of Dreamcatchers, Scrapbooking, Jewelry, and Steampunk at art centers for the past six years. She is an avid student of the Navajo culture and its arts. Classes will be held at The La Veta School of the Arts — across from town park in La Veta. But luckily, you’ll be inspired by the pioneering spirit of Aguilar town founder. Don José Ramón. Aguilar served in the Colorado House of Representatives in 1881-1882, 1887-1888, and in 1891 he served his first term as county commissioner. He also served as Mayor in 1897-1898 and 1901-1902. Like Aguilar, riders will need every bit of energy to finish off this ride. It’s another one that goes through the remote northern part of the county that sees little auto traffic. Be prepared for several no cell phone zones.

RaBa Cinco ~ Simpson’s Rest
tRiNidAd — Join us for a 2 mile Run/Walk up and back down the dirt road leading to Simpson’s Rest Sunday, July 7, 8:30 am. Enjoy spectacular views of Trinidad, Fishers Peak, and the surrounding area while you traverse the roughly maintained dirt course. Approximately 300 ft elevation is gained on the uphill. The course surface is rough but wide. This event is hosted by Run Trinidad and is part of the RaBa Cinco Series. Medals to the top three Male and Female runners and walkers. RaBa Cinco points awarded.
Race course will be open to traffic during the event. No strollers, pets, or headphones allowed during the event. Children must be 10 years old or older to participate. Spectators wishing to cheer on runners at the turnaround on top must be to the top parking area by 8:20 am, and should remain there until event officials declare that enough participants have finished the course that is safe to drive down.

Wooden boxes class at TSJC
tRiNidAd — Learn the techniques of fine wood working in a week long class Monday, July 8 through Friday, July 12, 8 am to 5 pm presented by Southern Rockies Heritage School at Trinidad State Junior College.
This class is for continuing education only, not for college credit.
We will cover hand tool sharpening and use, as well as machine techniques. It will focus on various corner construction, including dovetails, as used to build small display cases, pistol boxes, and fine tools. Students will take home a completed project. The class cost is $300 plus the cost of materials.

2019 International Santa Fe Balloon Rally in Raton
RAtoN — Join us for a family-friendly, small crowd, big bal- loon rally! Balloons ascend at dawn and the Kiwanis Club will be serving a pancake breakfast early. The rally will take place at La Mesa Airfield. Free Admission, but bring some money for swag and breakfast! The 2019 Balloon Rally brought to you by Raton MainStreet will be held Thursday, July 4 through Saturday, July 6 at La Mesa Airfield. The daily schedule of events includes Kiwanis pancake breakfasts from 6 to 9 am and Balloon Ascension at 6:30 am. Thursday, July 4 events include music by DJ Teddy Romero from 6 to 10 am, then all day fun on First Street with a parade scheduled at 5 pm. Friday, July 5 there is a pilot competition from 7 to 8 am with music by DJ Teddy Romero from 6 to 10 am. At 8:30 pm there is the Balloon Glow (weather permitting). Art for Kids-ya gotta have art
LA VEtA — The SPACe 2019 Youth Art Workshop in La Veta is the week of July 8-12, 9 am to noon each day for children who have completed Kindergarten to those entering 6th grade. All materials are provided.
Children entering 1st – 3rd grades will spend the week exploring and creating art. This five day workshop, held at the La Veta School of the Arts, will include two amazing projects. Kids will work with clay on a Fossil and Container project, which includes research looking at fossils, and drawing before working in clay. The second project includes creating Japanese Paste paper, making dynamic patterns and textures. The children will also be learning about symmetry, drawing and collage-the art of using a variety of papers and gluing them to a surface.
Patti Paiz Jones will be the instructor for the 1st – 3rd grade children. She received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Northern Colorado in art education and brings 36 years’ experience teaching art to grades 1 – 12.
Young people entering 4th – 6th grades will learn how to create their own video games, under the direction of Rachael Schneider. The workshop will be held at the La Veta High School Media Center, with devices provided by the school.

tRiNidAd — History and archaeology are two fields that go hand-in-hand and help us learn about the people who lived be- fore us. This week, July 8 to 12 we will learn about what people who work in these fields do, as well as the important principles involved in these fields. Throughout the week, we will have mysteries to solve that require using historical and archeological skills we’ll learn along the way. Hands on History program re- turns to Trinidad History Museum each week Monday -Friday, 9 am to 3 pm with different topics covered each week.
Lunch, snacks, and all the supplies are included. Weather pending, students will spend at least an hour outside. Please ensure your children bring close-toed shoes with them. THM will provide sunscreen and bug spray, but if there is a specific brand that your child needs, you must provide it.
This camp is open to students in grades 1-8 at the cost of $85/week. Discounts available for THM and History Colorado Members, families enrolling multiple children, and paying tuition in full before the start of camp. We also have scholarships based on household size and income.
