USDA Seeks Applications for Rural Economic Development Grants

WASHiNGtON — The USDA is seeking applications for grants to promote rural economic development and job creation projects.

The grants are being provided through USDA’s Rural Economic Development Loan and Grant Program. Eligible applicants include any entity that USDA Rural Development identifies as an eligible borrower under the Rural Electrification Act of 1936. The grants can be used for business startup costs; business expansion; business incubators; technical assistance feasibility studies; advanced telecommunications services and computer networks for medical, educational, and job training services; and community facilities projects for economic development.

Applicants are encouraged to consider projects that provide measurable results in helping rural communities build ro- bust and sustainable economies through strategic investments in infrastructure, partnerships and innovation. Key strategies include: Achieving e-Connectivity for Rural America; Developing the Rural Economy; Harnessing Technological Innovation; Supporting a Rural Workforce; Improving Quality of Life.

Application deadlines are First Quarter, Sept. 30, 2019; Second Quarter, Dec. 31, 2019; Third Quarter, March 31, 2020; and Fourth Quarter, June 30, 2020. Applications are due by 4:30 pm at each Rural Development state office.

Huerfano Soup at La Veta Mercantile

LA VEtA — The next Huerfano Soup at the La Veta Mercantile, sponsored by Bachman & Associates will be held Thursday, August 1, 6 pm. One dish + one vote + one passionate community = Huerfano Soup.

Huerfano Soup is a monthly community-based potluck where participants, through this micro-granting dinner, assist a variety of projects in Huerfano County. A potluck item and a $5 donation makes you eligible to vote on the evening’s presentations. As a diner, you will hear 3 five-minute pitches from community members who need funding for projects that are beneficial to the community. Enjoy the best $5 dinner in town with your friends, then choose the winning proposal to receive the evenings donations.

The presenters this month will be Spanish Peaks Alliance For Wildlife Protection, the Celtic Music Festival, and Dorcas Circle Food & Clothing.

 

Lucas Bohn stand-up comedy at the Fox

WALSENBURG — Come down to the Fox Theater Thursday, August 1, 8 pm to enjoy the comedy of Lucas Bohn. Lucas placed runner-up in the Magners Comedy Festival and was awarded Best of the Fest at the Detroit Comedy Festival. In addition to performing on stage, Lucas does voice-overs and has been featured on PBS, CBS, and Coastal Today. Lucas has performed with notable entertainers like Jimmy Fallon, Dave Chappelle, and Kevin Hart.

If you’re a parent, teacher, or coach, you don’t want to miss this hilarious performance. Teachers and coaches, we appreciate you! Dorcas Circle seeks volunteers!

WALSENBURG — Volunteers are needed ASAP. Dorcas Circle Food Pantry serves hungry folks in our area with free, available, near-expiration food. We desperately need able-bo- died volunteers to serve 2 or 3 hour shifts on Tuesday and Thursday between 9 am and 4 pm to pick up boxes and hand out the door, in a pleasant way. Peach orders due for SCCY

WALSENBURG — Sangre de Cristo Center for Youth taking orders now for peach orders to be delivered in August. These peaches are tree ripened, hand-picked Western Slope #1 peaches. This yearly fundraiser is important for the SCCY pro- grams presented throughout the year. 10 pound boxes are $23 ($8 for SCCY, tax deductible) and 18 pound boxes are $36 ($12 for SCCY). Life zones, Ten Things, and geologic time at Lathrop

WALSENBURG — Friday, August 2, join the park naturalist on a 2-mile walk & talk presentation and learn about the life zones in and around Lathrop State Park. This activity is for all ages. Kids who attend can earn a Junior Ranger badge. This presentation will begin at 7:00 pm at the Piñon Campground Amphitheater.

On Saturday morning, August 3, the park naturalist will host an activity called Ten Things. Ten Things is a scavenger hunt for ten natural items that can be found at Lathrop State Park. This activity will begin at 9 am at the Piñon Campground Amphitheater.

On Saturday evening, UCCS Professor George Bolling presents Geology Timeline. Come and see a visual representation of the earth’s timeline and learn when certain key events occurred. The presentation will begin at 7 pm at the Piñon Campground Amphitheater.

In the event of rain, the Saturday evening presentation may be moved to the Visitor Center.

As always, any vehicle in the State Park must display a park pass. If you would like to attend but don’t have a park pass, remember you may check one out of either Spanish Peaks Library or La Veta Library for up to one week.

 

Gardner’s Friday potlucks

GARDNER — Miss meeting friends and neighbors at the Wildflower? Come on out on Fridays, 5 to 8 pm this summer to the community center. Bring a dish to share, bring music, help set up/and or clean up, just gift us with your presence! There are some plates and utensils at the center, but to be sure to have some bring your own. Chris Arellano at La Veta Mercantile

LA VEtA — La Veta Mercantile proudly hosts Chris Arellano Friday August 2, 7 pm. Arellano’s deeply personal Americana weaves together the Norteno music of his Northern New Mexico upbringing with Alternative Country and Blues influences- for a signature style that he calls Nuevo Americana. Fused with song and story, Spanish and English, his transcendent lyrics move listeners with emotion and passion. La Veta School golf tourney

LA VEtA — The Redskin Open will take place Saturday, Au- gust 3 at the Walsenburg Golf Course. The fee to participate is $75 per person. Registration begins at 8 am.

The format for the tournament will be a four man scramble. To register, visit the golf course or email Greg.King@lvk12.org

Breakfast and Lunch are included in the fee. Prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams. Prizes are also awarded for longest drive and putt. Door prizes will be given.

 

Watercolor class LVSA

LA VEtA — The La Veta School of the Arts is offering Water- color Painting with Frank LaLumia ■ August 3-4 ■ Cost: $150. This Watercolor Workshop is designed to deepen under- standing of the craft of Watercolor Painting. Individual technique is a function of one’s personal aesthetic and will be emphasized – producing work that is expressive and authentic to each artist. This class is open to students at all levels, beginner to advanced. Oil painters are welcome. Demonstrations will be in Watercolor. Frank LaLumia is a Signature Member and past President of the Plein Air Painters of America, a Signature Member of many Watercolor societies including the American Watercolor Society, of America. Last day to order peaches from La Veta United Methodist Church

LA VEtA — Final orders for those delicious, #1 Palisade peaches through LA VETA UNITED METHODIST CHURCH need to be received by Saturday, August 3. Order forms are available throughout town—including blank forms at the door of La Veta United Methodist Church on the corner of Main and Virginia. Orders will be ready for pickup on Sunday, August 18 between 10:30a-2:30p. Root Down & Move Out

LA VEtA — Yoga, mindfulness, and wildflowers with Yoga Teacher, Ruth Heal and Naturalist, Bob Kennemer. This Yoga and mindfulness workshop will be held Sunday August 4. The Yoga workshop is 9:30 am to 12:30 pm; Lunch 12 to 1:30 pm; Wild plant walk 1:30 to 4:30 pm. Join us for one or both work- shops and include a delicious homemade lunch of foraged wild plants and locally grown organic foods.

The event takes place on private land north of La Veta, Colorado at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains at the House of Streaming Light. The cost is $30 for each workshop and $20 for lunch. Plaza de los Leones Fiesta is back!

WALSENBURG — It’s the “First” Annual 2019 Plaza de los Leones Fiesta to be held Saturday, August 3 at Fiesta Park be- hind the Community Center. The annual fiesta is being brought back after all these years. Come out and see the parade, car show, music with DJ ‘Eddie G’ from Pueblo, and more entertainment of all sorts! There will be vendors, a beer garden, El Fandango dancers, a horseshoe tournament, and much more. The parade has been cancelled however.

In the evening, dance to the live music of “The Latin Thunder Band” from Pueblo at the community center beginning at 8 pm. Come one, come all, Plaza de los Leones Fiesta. We are looking forward to seeing you there!

 

Open art studios

LA VEtA — Saturday and Sunday August 3 and 4, 10 am to 4 pm, La Veta artists Ann Gethen and Kathy Hill invite the public to visit their studios on East Virginia St. in La Veta. Both artists paint landscapes in oils.

Gethen also specializes in botanical illustrations done in watercolors. She has published a book of her illustrations of Colorado wildflowers, which she will have for sale at her studio. She will also have a sale on frames.

Hill has numerous original paintings of the Spanish Peaks done with oils and watercolors, as well as paintings of columbines, sunflowers, and other local scenery. She also has matted prints of many of her watercolors as well as notecards created from her paintings.

See how these two artists create their artwork. Hill’s studio is located at 133 E. Virginia, just east of Main St. Gethen’s studio is about a half mile further outside the Town limits at 382 Willis Dr. Signs will mark the locations. Call 742-5756 for information.

 

Gardner Chuckwagon Supper

GARDNER — The 77th Annual Gardner Chuckwagon Supper will be held Saturday, August 3, from 2 to 5 pm. Enjoy pit roasted beef with smooth gravy, homemade biscuits, creamy coleslaw, sliced veggies, sweet corn-on-the-cob, cowboy coffee and the world famous pies desserts. Suggested donation is $10 per adult and $5 per child. Don’t miss this annual event.

 

Huerfano Historical Society meeting

WALSENBURG — The next meeting of the Huerfano County Historical Society will be held Tuesday, August 6, 4 pm at the Huerfano Heritage Center, 114 W. 6th St. The meeting for Au- gust will be held on Tuesday, August 6th instead of Wednesday the 7th as usual. We will be discussing plans for the upcoming Walsenburg Secret Places Tour on August 24th.

 

Crafters needed!

HUERfANO — We are looking for anyone who might be interested in displaying their craft items such as ceramics, wood working, leather crafter, baked goods, knitting items, photography, gardening items such as squash, cucumbers etc., sewing items, canning items such as jellies, jams, pickles, etc., paintings, quilting, flowers, floral arrangements, handmade jewelry items, crochet items, etc., in the open class show at the 2019 Huerfano County 4-H Fair.

The open class show is open to the public and all 4-H and FFA kids who would like to display their items for the week of the county fair.

Items must be entered into the open class show on Wednesday, August 7, between 8 and 9 am. There is a $5 entry fee that covers all of the items you may choose to enter in the open class show. The items you enter will be judged and stay on display for the week of fair and must be picked up on Saturday, August 10, by 4:00 p.m. Questions? New art and flower show in Cuchara

CUCHARA — The Cuchara Valley Recreation Program is starting a new art show for the Cuchara Valley.

The Cuchara Art and Flower Show will be held on August 10th (10:00-4:00) and 11th (1:00-4:00) at the Cuchara Com- munity Center.

Artists: This is a commission-free show. It is all about celebrating your talents and skills. This is a 2-dimensional show only, paintings and photographs. We will be taking in artwork on Thursday, August 8th from 9:00-2:00 at the Cuchara Community Center. The limit will be 5 pieces from each category.

flowers: The very first Cuchara Hermosa Art Shows had flower arrangements in and around the art show as a special touch. We are bringing that back with the Cuchara Art and Flower Show. If you would like to have a flower arrangement in the show, we would love to have you bring them in! Want to sell them, that’s good too!

Ag Appreciation BBQ

LA VEtA — The Ag Appreciation BBQ will be held Friday, August 9, 4 to 6 pm in the Huerfano County 4-H barn. This dinner is open to any person involved in agriculture in Huerfano County-NOT JUST RANCHERS. KSPK will again have a remote radio broadcast during the BBQ. In addition we are pleased to have entertainment by the “Apache Creek Fiddlers”.

There is no charge for the meal, but a charitable donation is accepted. Last year’s proceeds went to the Colorado Farm Bureau Spring Fire Fund and financial aid was given to a Huerfano County rancher, a business and the 4-H Fair Board for loses due to the Spring Fire. At this time those sponsoring the event are the Huerfano County Cowbells, Upper Huerfano Conservation District, Huerfano County Farm Bureau, and the Huerfano County Commissioners. Come join in good food, good music and good times.

LA VEtA — Tom Munch returns to the LV Mercantile Friday, August 9, 7 pm. Munch has brought a blend of Southwest- Folk-Jazz to Southern Colorado’s music scene for over 3 decades. His versatility is seen in an impressive repertoire of some 3000 songs and includes jazz standards, western, folk, classic rock, R&B, children’s, and rare historic songs, and originals. Tom finds the heart of each song and performs with a love of music and respect for his audience, whether it be in a concert setting or for his weekly work with Alzheimer’s patients. Stonewall Century Ride

LA VEtA — The annual Stonewall Century Ride will be held Saturday, August 10. Ride the Highway of Legends (Colorado State Highway 12) 102 miles from La Veta to Segundo and back; or turn around at any time! This is an annual fundraiser for the La Veta and Stonewall Fire Protection Districts. Registration information at www.spcycling.org. Packet pickup Friday, August 9, 4-9 pm, at the La Veta United Methodist Church, 416 S Main St, or at the La Veta Town Park (W Ryus Ave) the morning of the ride. Proceeds from the ride go to nonprofits, with the vast majority (over 90%) to the La Veta and Stonewall fire departments. Spanish Peaks Pioneer Endurance ride

LA VEtA — A horseback endurance event will be held Saturday, August 10 through Monday, August 12 at SoCo Endurance. This 3-day pioneer event features fun rides, LDs, and 50s each day. Darrin Kobetich at Deerprint

LA VEtA — Fort Worth, Texas-based solo acoustic guitar master Darrin Kobetich will be performing Saturday, August 10, 6 pm at Deerprint Wine & Bistro. Kobetich classifies his sound as “ambient delta raga thrash grass,” but that’s just scratching the surface. Kobetich has performed for us the past three summers with the amazing “Skunk Grass” band, Boxcar Bandits. This year he brings us a solo performance with unique styles ranging from Eastern to Blue Grass and Rock to Metal. Join us for an evening of a wide range of talent! Navajo Ranch HOA picnic

LA VEtA — The annual picnic for the Navajo Ranch HOA will be Saturday, August 17, 12 pm to 3 pm. Please mark your calendar now and plan to join us at the La Veta Town Park shelterhouse. This is a popular event and is open to all property owners and other residents of Navajo Ranch. Come meet your neighbors and feel free to bring guests.

The HOA will supply fried chicken, drinks, and tableware. You bring a dish (entrée, vegetable, dessert, or whatever you like) to share with your neighbors.

 

SPACe Photography Show

LA VEtA — The 2019 Annual Photography Show is now on display at SPACe, 132 W. Ryus, in La Veta. The show includes photography in Color and Black & White by twenty area pho- tographers from La Veta, Walsenburg, Trinidad, Cuchara, Lamar, La Junta, Monte Vista, Weston, Colorado City, Las Animas, Pueblo and Pueblo West. Show judge Cynthia Holling-Morris determined 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and Honorable Mention winners in each category. AGUiLAR — Run in Aguilar on Saturday, August 3 for the 125th Anniversary 12.5K Run and 2 Person Relay. The race starts at 8 am at 120 E. Main in Aguilar. AGUiLAR — Saturday, August 3rd Aguilar will be celebrating 125 years in the making “Celebrating Aguilar 1894-2019”. CApULiN — Come join Capulin Astronomy Rangers for our summer series of astronomy nights, Saturday, August 3 8 pm. View planets, our moon, galaxies and more through giant telescopes under some of the darkest skies in the lower 48. Times vary by month, but all observing will be done in the outdoor classroom area West of the Visitor Center. Please wear warm clothing and leave the pets at home. Friday art lab at Museum of Friends

WALSENBURG — The Friday Art Lab held every Friday, 1 to 3 pm throughout the summer and fall is for children ages 5-17. This art program focuses on “Service Learning for the Whole Community.” (Adopt a Planter Box with Inter-generational Service Learning).

This intergenerational downtown Walsenburg beautification program is designed for volunteer adults, senior citizens, and local children to work hand in hand to design, build and decorate planter boxes. Local businesses and individuals are invited to purchase a planter box as a way to add color down- town, provide programs, encourage creativity and support scholarships for children’s art classes at MOF. Earn a Junior Ranger badge at Lathrop

WALSENBURG — Friday, August 2, join the park naturalist on a 2-mile walk & talk presentation and learn about the life zones in and around Lathrop State Park. This activity is for all ages. Kids who attend can earn a Junior Ranger badge. This presentation will begin at 7:00 pm at the Piñon Campground Amphitheater.

On Saturday morning, August 3, the park naturalist will host an activity called Ten Things. Ten Things is a scavenger hunt for ten natural items that can be found at Lathrop State Park. This activity will begin at 9 am at the Piñon Campground Amphitheater.

RAtON — Raton Housing Authority would like to announce the participation in the Summer Food Service Program! The free lunch and breakfast program goes through Friday, August 7.
