The grants are being provided through USDA’s Rural Economic Development Loan and Grant Program. Eligible applicants include any entity that USDA Rural Development identifies as an eligible borrower under the Rural Electrification Act of 1936. The grants can be used for business startup costs; business expansion; business incubators; technical assistance feasibility studies; advanced telecommunications services and computer networks for medical, educational, and job training services; and community facilities projects for economic development.

Applicants are encouraged to consider projects that provide measurable results in helping rural communities build ro- bust and sustainable economies through strategic investments in infrastructure, partnerships and innovation. Key strategies include: Achieving e-Connectivity for Rural America; Developing the Rural Economy; Harnessing Technological Innovation; Supporting a Rural Workforce; Improving Quality of Life.

Application deadlines are First Quarter, Sept. 30, 2019; Second Quarter, Dec. 31, 2019; Third Quarter, March 31, 2020; and Fourth Quarter, June 30, 2020. Applications are due by 4:30 pm at each Rural Development state office.

Peach orders due for SCCY

Life zones, Ten Things, and geologic time at Lathrop

WALSENBURG — Friday, August 2, join the park naturalist on a 2-mile walk & talk presentation and learn about the life zones in and around Lathrop State Park. This activity is for all ages. Kids who attend can earn a Junior Ranger badge. This presentation will begin at 7:00 pm at the Piñon Campground Amphitheater.

On Saturday morning, August 3, the park naturalist will host an activity called Ten Things. Ten Things is a scavenger hunt for ten natural items that can be found at Lathrop State Park. This activity will begin at 9 am at the Piñon Campground Amphitheater.

On Saturday evening, UCCS Professor George Bolling presents Geology Timeline. Come and see a visual representation of the earth’s timeline and learn when certain key events occurred. The presentation will begin at 7 pm at the Piñon Campground Amphitheater.

In the event of rain, the Saturday evening presentation may be moved to the Visitor Center.

As always, any vehicle in the State Park must display a park pass. If you would like to attend but don’t have a park pass, remember you may check one out of either Spanish Peaks Library or La Veta Library for up to one week.

Plaza de los Leones Fiesta is back!

WALSENBURG — It’s the “First” Annual 2019 Plaza de los Leones Fiesta to be held Saturday, August 3 at Fiesta Park be- hind the Community Center. The annual fiesta is being brought back after all these years. Come out and see the parade, car show, music with DJ ‘Eddie G’ from Pueblo, and more entertainment of all sorts! There will be vendors, a beer garden, El Fandango dancers, a horseshoe tournament, and much more. The parade has been cancelled however.

Open art studios

LA VEtA — Saturday and Sunday August 3 and 4, 10 am to 4 pm, La Veta artists Ann Gethen and Kathy Hill invite the public to visit their studios on East Virginia St. in La Veta. Both artists paint landscapes in oils.

Gethen also specializes in botanical illustrations done in watercolors. She has published a book of her illustrations of Colorado wildflowers, which she will have for sale at her studio. She will also have a sale on frames.

Hill has numerous original paintings of the Spanish Peaks done with oils and watercolors, as well as paintings of columbines, sunflowers, and other local scenery. She also has matted prints of many of her watercolors as well as notecards created from her paintings.

The open class show is open to the public and all 4-H and FFA kids who would like to display their items for the week of the county fair.

This dinner is open to any person involved in agriculture in Huerfano County-NOT JUST RANCHERS. KSPK will again have a remote radio broadcast during the BBQ. In addition we are pleased to have entertainment by the “Apache Creek Fiddlers”.

There is no charge for the meal, but a charitable donation is accepted. Last year’s proceeds went to the Colorado Farm Bureau Spring Fire Fund and financial aid was given to a Huerfano County rancher, a business and the 4-H Fair Board for loses due to the Spring Fire. At this time those sponsoring the event are the Huerfano County Cowbells, Upper Huerfano Conservation District, Huerfano County Farm Bureau, and the Huerfano County Commissioners.
