Early years are learning years®

HUERFANO/LAS ANIMAS COUNTIES — The Huerfano- Las Animas (HULA) Counties Early Childhood Advisory Council asks Huerfano and Las Animas Counties to come together for children during the Week of the Young Child™ (April 9-16, 2016). As part of the National Week of the Young Child™ celebrated across the country, Huerfano & Las Animas Counties will honor young children and all those who make a difference in children’s lives.

“All young children need and deserve high-quality early learning experiences that will prepare them for life, and Huerfano & Las Animas Counties have a great opportunity to do our part to help young children,” said Jennifer Sanchez McDonald, Coordinator of the HULA Early Childhood Advisory Council. “Week of the Young Child™ is a time for Huerfano & Las Animas Counties to recognize that Early Years are Learning Years® for all young children.”

The Huerfano- Las Animas (HULA) Counties Early Childhood Advisory Council will kick of the celebration on Friday, April 8, 2016 @ 6:30pm with motivational speaker, author, Mark Hoog, at the Trinidad Middle School Auditorium.

They will host Week of the Young Child Celebrations on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at the Eagles Hall 614 Main St, Walsenburg from 11-2pm, and on Saturday April 16, 2016 from 11- 2pm at Cimino Park, Trinidad. The cost is FREE, open to the public, especially children. There will be raffle drawings on both event days. During the events they are soliciting children’s gently used books, school supplies, coats, snow boots, and high school calculators for children in the upcoming school year. Car Seat Safety Check Points will be available at each event.

A second “Is Your Child on Track?” Community Screening event will be from 10 am to 2 pm on April 22, 2016 at SCCOG Early Learning Center, 1225 Rosita Ave, Trinidad and on April 23, 2016 at Peakview School, 375 West Pine Street, Walsenburg, CO. The screening event is FREE and for all children. A Screening Day is an opportunity for children to test their skills in vision, hearing, behavior, language, and movement to see if they could benefit from extra support and are on track for kindergarten success. Children do activities while parents answer simple questions. Professionals will be available to answer questions about children’s behavior, health, language, and movement. Families will have a better understanding of their child’s development as well as resources to support their child’s success.

Week of the Young Child™, sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), is an opportunity for early childhood programs across the country, including child care and Head Start programs, preschools, and elementary schools, to host activities to bring awareness to the needs of young children.

Young children and their families depend on high-quality education and care, which help children get a great start and bring lasting benefits to Huerfano & Las Animas Counties. Week of the Young Child™ is a time to recognize the importance of early learning and early literacy, and to celebrate the teachers and policies that bring early childhood education to young children.
