THROUGHOUT OUR WORLD

Colorado State Parks offer Fresh Air Friday

DENVER — Reclaim Friday, Nov. 29 by avoiding the shopping hysteria and getting outside for a breath of fresh air! On Fresh Air Friday, Colorado Parks and Wildlife welcomes visitors to any of our 41 state parks by providing free entry in what has become an annual tradition of encouraging Coloradans to get out and give thanks.

Where ever you decide to get outdoors this Fresh Air Friday, CPW has the tools to make it an easy, stress-free experience for the whole family. Discover your new favorite state park with our state park finder, plan a short stroll or thorough post-Thanksgiving workout with our free COTREX trails app, find a secluded fishing spot with our CPW Fishing App, or have fun with the kids with Generation Wild’s 100 Things to Do Before You’re 12 list.

To help conserve our natural spaces and keep them wild while recreating, please be sure to follow Leave No Trace Principles. Be Colo-Ready with common-sense practices such as sticking to the trails and pack ing out all trash (including peels and cores), visiting less-visited and off-peak destinations, and keeping wildlife at a safe distance (use your zoom for photos and never feed wildlife!).

Several Colorado state parks will also have hikes planned for the day for those looking to walk off that Thanksgiving dinner and to connect with others in nature. For more details on these activities, or to get more ideas on how to Live Life Outside, visit cpw.state.co.us. As you enjoy a day of outdoor adventures, make sure to share it with us by using the hashtag #FreshAirFriday on your social media posts.

Most importantly, no matter where you go, get out and turn Black Friday into a blue skies Friday, a great views Friday, a green trees Friday… a Fresh Air Friday!

Seedling trees available for land-owners affected by fire, flood, insects or disease

SE COLORADO — The Colorado State Forest Service is selling affordable seedling trees, grown by its Seedling Tree Nursery, to residents of the southeast area of the state to support its Trees for Conservation program. The purpose of this program is to encourage connections between communities and forest health, so that individuals may enhance Colorado’s forests on their land, while helping the CSFS and other organizations across the state reach their conservation goals.

Seedling trees play a large part in the rehabilitation of burned areas of land by stabilizing soil, reducing erosion and re-creating habitat for wildlife. When communities come together to influence these factors, it helps to ensure the long- term health and resiliency of the state’s diverse forests.

Steve Rudolph, a forester in the Woodland Park Field Office and the lead for seedling tree sales in the southeast area of Colorado, says that he hopes that this program will continue to help landowners make personal commitments to their prop- erty, as well as instill a sense of pride in their state’s forests.

The CSFS will offer these seedling trees for purchase starting in late November, running through early spring. When considering which species to purchase, it is good to keep in mind factors such as elevation of the planting site, soil type and watering requirements of the plant to ensure successful seedling survival rates. The CSFS also sells seedling survival supplies, to allow customers to purchase all of the tools they may need to properly plant and grow their trees.

To purchase seedling trees, please visit csfs.colostate.edu/woodland-park/wp-seedling-trees/ and download the 2020 order form. Once you have filled out this form, you may mail it to the corresponding address for your pick-up location, or you can scan and e-mail it to csfs_wood- landpark@mail.colostate.edu. For more information about the seedling tree program, please call (719) 687-2951.

Donations for the presenting non-profit will then be auctioned off to local businesses. There is no amount too small or too large, if you need in- kind donations, such as board members, volunteers, items, or services, please include them in the pitch. Ask for what you need.

Each nonprofit will have about 4 feet of table space to set up an information booth. At the end of the auction, bidders will be instructed to go to the information tables to sign letters of commitment and for nonprofits to collect contact information. It is generally expected that businesses will receive an invoice from the nonprofit for their financial commitment, though some businesses may prefer to pay that evening. We encourage nonprofits to bring a festive donation jar for their table.

Each nonprofit will also be included in an event guide. We request each participating nonprofit submit a statement of no more than 300 words that compliments your 60-second speech. This statement should include your requests and an overview of your organization. We also need a point of contact to list in the guide.

The church was built in 1906 and is on the Town of Aguilar Register of Historic Places. Area Teams fill TSJC Line-up next week – EXTRA DAY ADDED – BEGINS WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 4

by David Tesitor

TRINIDAD — Make plans to attend the 84th Annual TSJC High School Basketball Tournament, the season warmup for eight area teams making this event a truly local tournament to determine the best team in the World Journal coverage area. The men and women’s teams from John Mall, Hoehne, Trinidad, Raton, Kim/ Branson, and Springer will be sending teams. The Maxwell girls and Primero boys’ teams will also send teams. La Junta, the only non-area school will also be on hand. The only area school to bypass the event will be La Veta.

Last season, it was La Junta Tigers versus the Kim/ Branson Mustangs in the finals with the Tiger men defeating the Mustangs 63-41 men’s team while the Lady Mustangs beat the La Junta women 38-25.

There is also one significant change to the tournament this year. In an effort to keep team athletes in school longer on Thursday, organizers of the tournament decided to split the first day of competition into two nights. This will allow the teams to stay in morning classes and also allow for larger crowds for all of the opening round games. The schedule allows four games to be played on both Wednesday and Thursday with each day starting at 2:30pm. Games played on Friday and Saturday will begin with action at 9 am (session 3) and will be played throughout the day, with a break in the afternoon, (session 4). Losers from the first two days will play in the earlier games on Friday in the consolation rounds while the winners advance to the evening play. Be sure to look at our Facebook pages over the weekend to see what time your team will be playing.

The tournament will be played in the Scott Gym, located on the Trinidad State Junior College campus. Please note, there is plenty of parking on the side streets near the gym. Please note the road and parking lot in front of Scott Gym is now a one-way entering from the south via Park Street and exiting down the hill onto Pine Street.

Twelve all-tournament players (six men and six women) and one coach award will be selected by a committee made up of Trinidad State coaches and players. The tournament will crown the champion, runners-up, third place and consolation finishers for each division, the top cheer group award, and select one team as the John M. O’Conner Sportsmanship recipient.

Prices are $5 for fans seven and older. Six and under are free of charge. There will be two sessions daily, and tickets will be good for both sessions. All patrons must vacate Scott Gymnasium following the last game of each session to permit the college custodial staff to sweep floors and clean the area.

No bands will be allowed in the gymnasium at any session because of the limited seating area. Concessions will be available.

La Veta annual holiday arts fundraiser

Show choir at SPACE. Photo courtesy La Veta Gallery on Main

LA VETA — Each December since 2008, the La Veta arts community has held an end of year culinary fund raising event. The first three years the funds went toward the Spanish Peaks Arts Council’s (SPACe) building expansion. Those inaugural events were so successful and well received that this fund raiser has continued. Now the funds raised pay for the Hwy 160 “Art Galleries” signs, provide art scholarships to locals and supplemental funds for La Veta youth-oriented art activities, e.g. Fridays for Fun (put on by the La Veta School of the Arts), SPACe’s Youth Art Workshops, as well as contribute to the Francisco Center for the Performing Arts (FCPA) and its Show Choir and to the La Veta Public Library’s Scary Story contest.

The funding beneficiaries this year will also include support for the efforts to obtain the highly sought Colorado Creative District certification for La Veta.

The event is on December 7 (a Saturday) from 5 to 7:30pm. Beth Evans of the Shalawalla Gallery produced the colorful poster and tickets; as she has done so graciously and creatively for the past several years. The eight participating venues are: La Veta Gallery on Main, Spanish Peaks Arts Council (SPACe), Painted Horse Gallery, Shalawalla Gallery & Gift Shop, La Veta School of the Arts and Silvershoe as well as the two new venues this year: Crafted in Colorado and the Parkside Gallery of Wood Art.

The FCPA Show Choir will again provide Christmas caroling during this year’s event.

Each venue will provide some type of food and refreshment to ticket holders. The La Veta Gallery on Main, in keeping with longstanding tradition, will provide a selection of desserts. The other locations will provide taster or small plate offerings along with liquid refreshment. Each venue will also be holding a drawing for a prize of their choosing. All ticket holders will be entered in the master drawing for an adult art scholarship with an estimated value of $100. Tickets are $25 each and are available for purchase at the participating venues. Online ticket sales are available at: www.lavetagalleryonmain.com

Come stroll among eight La Veta art galleries , while contributing to local art programs and scholarships for both adults and children.

MCMC works with NM and Raton gov’t for Miners Day Proclamation

by Brandon Waller

RATON — As announced at the November Miners’ Colfax Medical Center Board of Trustees meeting, MCMC has been working with state and local government and will be proclaiming December 6, 2019 as Miners Day. This holiday, in reference to Miners Heritage Day, comes as over 160,000 miners throughout the state receive recognition and appreciation for their contributions to culture, economics and history. This will be the project of local outreach programs, pulmonology and focus on lung diseases found with New Mexico’s miners and the 250 care providers at MCMC. There will be a celebration and dedication with the proclamation on December 6 at the Raton Convention Center at 9 a.m.

Also discussed at the meeting was the application for a Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant. MCMC had applied for an HRSA grant last year for the amount of $100,000 but they were turned down and hope to receive the federal grant this year. The grants provide additional funding for healthcare and providers in rural areas. MCMC has been expanding, re-evaluating, and obtaining reviewable data to apply for the grant this year, which has a network grant amount of $300,000. MCMC hopes to have the grant application submitted by November 21st, 2019.

Introduced at the November MCMC board meeting for November was Rae Hager in her new role as MCMC Quality Manager.

Addressing the quality report for the month, it was noted that flu vaccination rate for MCMC employees stands at 99.9 percent, with only one individual remaining that has not yet received their flu shot. Hand hygiene is a huge factor in flu prevention, a constant point with MCMC staff.

The patient quality experience at MCMC has been reported as good also, with the exception of one patient fall in the restroom of the hospital. The patient had lost his balance and bumped his shoulder, and hospital staff were there and ready and treated the patient accordingly. Patient surveys continue to reflect positive ratings and MCMC staff are encouraging the use of the patient portal, an online system designed for patients to voice their concerns, check their records, set appointments, pay their bills, and other options.

MCMC administration is currently trying to fill its family practice staff, and has rolled out an new onboarding and orientation package to all new employees. They have also implemented the assistance of a recruitment firm based out of Denver. Jackson and Coker will be working with MCMC to recruit more staff members, primarily a family practice physician and a Physicians’ Assistant. A new doctor has been hired, and is set to begin their first day on December 2, 2019.

For finance review, it was discussed that MCMC currently has funds equaling approximately $6,000,000 in the bank, which is up $500,000 from last month. The accounts payable amount is sitting at $202,000. Gross revenue from MCMC is reported at $13.3 million dollars, and that is down 17.24 percent from this time last year. Patient admissions are also showing as fewer than last year, down 37 percent from admissions rates for this point in 2018. Unbilled charges for MCMC are at approximately $600,000.

SPBA’s Second Annual Holiday Giving Celebration

WALSENBURG — The Spanish Peaks Business Alliance is hosting the Second Annual Holiday Giving Celebration on Dec. 11, 6 to 9 pm at the Huerfano County Community Center.

The centerpiece of this event is an auction, where nonprofits give a 60-second speech that includes an overview of the organization and its needs for the year.

TO PARTICIPATE IN THE HOLIDAY AUCTION, you MUST be a member of the Alliance. Please email join requests, or if you are already a member, your statement and the name, phone number and/or email address of your point of contact to: EKSANDER@HUERFANO.US

Deadline for submissions is Friday, Dec. 6. Thank you in advance for your participation in the Second Annual SPBA Holiday Giving Celebration. Feel free to share this invitation with any nonprofits that are seeking funding in 2020. Together we can make a difference!

Aguilar church name change

AGUILAR — The little white church on Romero Street has a new name. The congregation has chosen Apishapa Valley Chapel in an attempt to attract new worshipers who are look- ing for a place to worship in a friendly casual atmosphere. A different visiting Presbyterian Pastor each Sunday makes for a diverse interpretation of the Scriptures at 10:40 am every Sunday. This new name better represents our location and a desire to reach out and bring in new friends, not just those who share our denominational roots. The church was built in 1906 and is on the Town of Aguilar Register of Historic Places. In earlier years it was known as the Community Church and served as a hub of many community social functions and it is our goal to bring it back to its former importance to the community.

La Veta Annual Holiday Arts Fundraiser set to be another brilliant night

courtesy Karen Austin

LA VETA — Each December since 2008 the La Veta arts community has held an end of year culinary fund raising event. The first three years the funds went toward the Spanish Peaks Arts Council’s (SPACe) building expansion. Those inaugural events were so successful and well received that this fund raiser has continued. Now the funds raised pay for the Highway 160 “Art Galleries” signs, provide art scholarships to locals and supplemental funds for La Veta youth-oriented art activities, e.g.

The event is on December 7 (a Saturday) from 5 to 7:30 pm. Beth Evans of the Shalawalla Gallery produced the colorful poster and tickets; as she has done so graciously and creatively for the past several years. The eight participating venues are: La Veta Gallery on Main, Spanish Peaks Arts Council (SPACe), Painted Horse Gallery, Shalawalla Gallery & Gift Shop, La Veta School of the Arts, and Silvershoe as well as the two new venues this year: Crafted in Colorado and the Parkside Gallery of Wood Art.

Come stroll among eight La Veta art galleries and enjoy a variety of delicious foods and beverages, as well as an exceptional variety of artworks, while contributing to local art programs and scholarships for both adults and children.

There are a limited number of tickets available, so please plan to purchase your tickets early. Happy Holidays to all!

Laying the foundation for art at MOF

The Gala at the Museum of Friends is Friday, Nov. 15, and includes a historical skit as well as nearly 100 pieces in the sale

by T Wahl

WALSENBURG — When writer Ann McCutchan was asked to write a skit for the Museum of Friends’ fundraising gala and Western art sale , she said yes. And then she started digging – hunting through old newspapers to find tidbits about Walsenburg, where the museum is located, and reading the memoirs of Mother Jones, who had been imprisoned for 26 days in Walsenburg in the early 1900’s.

McCutchan is the author of five books and has a sixth, about the writer and environmentalist Marjory Stoneman Douglas coming out next year.

Three years ago McCutchan moved to Colorado Springs, after retiring from the University of North Texas.

I talked to McCutchan at the Museum of Friends during a rehearsal in the run-up to the gala.

The “stage” was really the middle of the first floor gallery, surrounded by an eclectic mix of nearly a hundred paintings of the west from a lot of different eras and artists. They are all for sale.

The characters in what McCutchan calls a “fantasy enactment” skit include Mother Jones, the original “developers” of the “Roof and Dick” building, where we are talking, Fred O. Roof, and George Dick and Mrs. Jefferson Farr, described in the script as the “privileged wife of the Sheriff.”

Ann McCutchan and I rode the brand new elevator (stage one of several proposed stages of renovations to the building) to the 2nd floor gallery and found a comfortable spot on a couch in front of a wall covered with paintings. I asked her how she first connected with the Museum of Friends and founders Brendt Berger and Maria Cocchiarelli Berger.

COMING TO COLORADO

Ann McCutchan: I’ve been coming to Colorado for years from Texas in the summers, like so many Texans have. And, I decided I would like to go to Denver. And as it turned out, there was nothing in Denver I could afford with two dogs. I had two Australian Shepherds.

Even before I saw this museum, I would stop here in Walsenburg for coffee on the way through town.

I would say what happened, what happened there? What’s the statue mean? How come these buildings aren’t used? Or, does that theater still have movies playing? I love, I love that stuff, asking those questions.

And I met Brent and Maria. I was blown away. I love anyone who goes into a place with a great idea that may or may not happen, but has so much idealism behind it.

BUILDING A SKIT

Ann McCutchan: So I said I would write a skit, something that could be entertainment, but refer to the history of the building. So, I found Mother Jones’ memoir and did some research on the history.

I decided to have Roof and Dick and the architect Francis Cooper be meeting, going over plans for the building and they’re envisioning this new place. Mrs Farr, she’s heard about this.

She doesn’t want anybody else in town to get what she gets in Denver.

That’s the conflict and Roof and Dick and Cooper eventually have to have to flatter her into agreeing that it’s good for the town and endorsing the building itself.

T. Wahl: And so it’s probably very familiar to people who have been involved in local politics or had a vision to put something new in a place, right?

Ann McCutchan: Exactly. I mean, it’s totally made up. But, it could have happened.

And, and the things that Mother Jones refers to in her narration are real historic events. She refers to her time in the jail here. Some of her lines come right at her out of her memoir, which is amazing.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PLACE

T. Wahl: It feels like just from talking to you for the last hour, that place is really important to you.

Ann McCutchan: That’s true. Yeah. And then what is the next place gonna be.

Marjorie Rawlings. (the subject of McCutchan’s latest book), she left work in the Northeast to just jump off a diving board and moved to Florida to write, even though she’d never been there and didn’t know what she was going to find. And it was very stimulating for her to make that geographical switch.

And I find the same for myself.

And I think it’s very interesting to have been here for three years, writing, putting together materials. And it forces me to use, to envision, to imagine even more than if I were there.

T. Wahl: In journalism, when you’re thinking about local versus regional versus national journalism, you’re always trying to figure out who the audience is. And one of the hardest things with reporters and producers is getting them out of their own world enough that they understand how to explain it to someone who doesn’t know their world.

Ann McCutchen: That’s right.

T. Wahl: I would imagine that being in a different place actually leads you to have conversations with people that will make you end up saying, okay, here’s why it’s interesting if you’re not in Florida.

Ann McCutchan: True. I think the more places you live, the better it is. (The sound of a train comes in through the windows).

Ann McCutchan: I love trains. Where are they going? I think of myself as not from any particular place or region or North or South or East or West. I like that.

LAYING THE FOUNDATION

T. Wahl: It’s almost like you’re laying a foundation for part of the building.

This is just about what takes place in a building. And for me, walking in and seeing you working with the group this morning and talking about Mother Jones and Ludlow it reinforces my sense of this as a place where I can connect deeply to both the present in the past. To here and there. it just feels like a deep experience of place.

Ann McCutchan: I think you’re right. And it’s something that draws me to this.

The Gala at the Museum of Friends is Friday, Nov. 15, from 5:30 to 9:30 pm.
