WELCOME TO WALSENBURG AND THE PETE AND INA GOMEZ INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT

by David Tesitor

WALSENBURG —The eighth annual Pete and Ina Gomez wrestling tournament sponsored by the John Mall Panthers will bring in 18 teams December 21 from across the state to wrestle in the pre-Christmas event which was renamed after long time supporters of the sport, Pete and Ina Gomez. When the high school renamed the tournament in 2010 for the following season, it was the first sanctioned wrestling tournament in Colorado and perhaps one of few in the country to honor a husband and wife. Since the tournament first began in 1977, up to fifteen schools from across the state, including those from the 2-4A classes, have competed in the John Mall Tournament which was called the Walsenburg Invitational in its early years. Since then, dozens of schools, including the perennial standbys, have come to Walsenburg to compete in this popular tournament. This weekend will be no exception as eighteen teams will journey from as far away as Dove Creek, Dolores, and Gunnison as well as from the Front Range and San Luis Valley. Trinidad is also slated to attend. In conjunction with the varsity tournament, there will also be a junior varsity tournament next door at Peakview Gym.

Why Pete and Ina Gomez?

The tournament was renamed for this iconic pair who spent their lives in the sport. Pete Gomez is a quiet and unassuming man whose only concern is the development of the kids he has coached. Gomez served as RE-1 high school wrestling coach from 1973 through 1990 and as athletic director from 1985 through 2002 and 2006-07. During his time at Walsenburg High and John Mall, Gomez coached three State Champions, two State Runners-up and twelve State Placement winners. He also coached to victory one National Junior Greco Champion and one National Greco Runner-up Champion.

In 2006, Gomez was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for his work as an official. He began officiating in 1975 and since then has traveled all over the world, officiating in Mexico, Canada, France, Finland, Sweden, the former Czechoslovakia and Australia. Gomez has officiated in final rounds in each foreign country he visited, including the Pan American Games in Mexico.

Ina Gomez, also a retired educator, taught over 30 years in the RE-1 school system before retiring. Ina is a Pairing Master for Olympic style wrestling and has held a US National license for 27 years and a FILA (international) license for 20 years. She is presently serving her second term on the Executive Board of the United States Wrestling Officials Association, a group of over 3000 members which includes both referees and pairers.

She has worked local, national and international events in over 30 states, including Hawaii. Being assigned as either the Head Pairer or only pairer at many tournaments has allowed Ina to take several Walsenburg girls to work these events. Ina has worked seven World Championships, two World Cups, six Pan American Championships, two Olympic Festivals, five Armed Forces Championships and 87 other international tournaments in France, Sweden, Finland, Canada, Mexico, and Australia as well as in the United States. She has presided over dual meets between the USA and teams from Poland, Cuba, Belarus, Russia, and Sweden. In addition, Ina has worked over 100 national tournaments as well as hundreds of local events.

Ina ran high school and junior high school collegiate tournaments and writes the championship award brackets at the CHSAA state tournament. She was voted the National Pairing Master of the Year in 2002, voted the National Dedicated Service to Pairing Award in 1989, and received a Regional Service to Wrestling Award in 1987.

Springer Elementary Parent Advisory Committee (PAC): Winter Carnival

by Sherry Goodyear

SPRINGER — The Springer Elementary Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) may be small, but it is fierce when it comes to fund-raising and organizing activities. This team of dynamic parents, along with the elementary school’s office manager, Amber Alcon, has been busy planning a Winter Carnival which will be held at the Springer Elementary Gymnasium (Old Gym) on Thursday, December 19 from 5:30 – 8:30 pm– the last day of school before winter break.

Entrance into the event is free, and there will be games galore for everyone in attendance to play. There will be a bouncy house, fish pond, baker’s walk, concessions, and much more with tickets for playing being available for purchase on site. All proceeds from this event will be used to fund field trips and other fun activities/items for the elementary children.

Just recently, PAC purchased t-shirts for all the children in the school. Each class picked the color for their shirts, which should be worn on fieldtrips so each teacher is visually able to more easily spot the kids from their class by the color of their shirts. PAC also plans to fund numerous field trips for the children over the next several months with a trip to Uncle Cliff’s Amusement Park happening in May. PAC encourages everyone to come out and enjoy the winter carnival and support the Springer Elementary. For questions please call Amber Alcon at 575-483-3485.

Michael Hearne and Bill Hearne to appear in La Veta December 18.

by Emilie Dubia

LA VETA — Bill Hearne and Michael Hearne, along with special guests Don Richmond and bassist vocalist Zeke Severson will perform at the La Veta Mercantile on Wednesday, Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. You will not find two people who have affected the music scene in this part of the world more than Michael Hearne and Bill Hearne. They first started playing together when Michael was a youngster and would go over to Bill’s house and they would play guitar for hours. They’ve both been mainstays in the music scene in northern New Mexico for decades, and have also influenced many artists in the greater Texas country and Americana music scenes.

But the amazing thing is, that they almost never have done a whole show together – they’re like the two rails on a train track – traveling alongside each other, but rarely if ever crossing paths, except for brief times at festivals and special occasions – and then only for a few songs.

So this is a pretty historic occasion – Michael and Bill are going to do a whole night together, picking and singing on each other’s songs, with Zeke Severson and Don Richmond playing along. Don Richmond, who has recorded and co-produced several records for both of the Hearnes remarks, “I can’t wait! The times I’ve seen them, and experienced them picking together have always been the highlight of whatever was going on. Not only the hot licks, but the depth and subtlety of their shared repertoire seems to go on forever. It’s definitely a night not to be missed – it’s worth an 8-hour drive to see this show.

THROUGHOUT OUR WORLD

Seedling trees available for landowners affected by fire, flood, insects or disease

SE COLORADO — The Colorado State Forest Service is selling affordable seedling trees, grown by its Seedling Tree Nursery, to residents of the southeast area of the state to support its Trees for Conservation program. The purpose of this program is to encourage connections between communities and forest health, so that individuals may enhance Colorado’s forests on their land, while helping the CSFS and other organizations ac- ross the state reach their conservation goals.

Seedling trees play a large part in the rehabilitation of burned areas of land by stabilizing soil, reducing erosion and re-creating habitat for wildlife. When communities come together to influence these factors, it helps to ensure the long- term health and resiliency of the state’s diverse forests.

Steve Rudolph, a forester in the Woodland Park Field Office and the lead for seedling tree sales in the southeast area of Colorado, says that he hopes that this program will continue to help landowners make personal commitments to their property, as well as instill a sense of pride in their state’s forests.

The CSFS will offer these seedling trees for purchase start- ing in late November, running through early spring. When considering which species to purchase, it is good to keep in mind factors such as elevation of the planting site, soil type and watering requirements of the plant to ensure successful seedling survival rates. The CSFS also sells seedling survival supplies, to allow customers to purchase all of the tools they may need to properly plant and grow their trees.

To purchase seedling trees, please visit csfs.colostate.edu/woodland-park/wp-seedling-trees/ and download the 2020 order form. Once you have filled out this form, you may mail it to the corresponding address for your pick-up location, or you can scan and e-mail it to csfs_wood- landpark@mail.colostate.edu. For more information about the seedling tree program, please call (719) 687-2951.

Suffrage exhibit at Trinidad History Museum ends Friday

TRINIDAD — Women’s Vote Centennial Colorado is currently exhibiting important suffrage artifacts at The Trinidad History Museum, through Friday, Dec 13. We want to get the word out so that the public (esp students, educators, history buffs) can visit the exhibit and learn more about Colorado’s trail- blazing role in American history; ours was the first state to ratify universal voting rights in the U.S. via popular referendum in 1893, a full 26 years before national suffrage!

An interesting fact about Las Animas county’s role in women’s suffrage: Las Animas County did not share the same level of enthusiasm surrounding the suffrage movement as the rest of the state. In 1893, 26% of residents voted in support of women’s right to vote. However, it was an improvement from the 1877 election where only 11% of residents were in favor.

The Road to the Vote Artifact Tour will travel throughout the state. If you cannot get out to Trinidad History Museum, catch the exhibit at these locations :
Dec. 16, 2019 – Jan. 3, 2020: El Pueblo History Museum, Pueblo
Jan. 6 – Jan 17, 2020: Fort Garland Museum and Cultural Center (Fort Garland)

Outdoor recreation opportunities at Colorado’s newest state park

TRINIDAD — Join the community Saturday, December 14, 4 to 5 at the A.R. Mitchell Museum of Western Art, 150 E Main St. for a forum discussing the recreational opportunities for the newly minted Fishers Peak State Park. The forum is hosted by Wally Wallace and Allyson Sheumaker

On September 12th 2019, Colorado Governor Jared Polis announced that the iconic 9,633-foot Fishers Peak will be featured in Colorado’s newest state park — making it publicly accessible for the first time to local citizens. At more than 19,000 acres, this property will be the second largest state park in Colorado. In conjunction with an array of partners — including the City of Trinidad and Colorado Parks and Wildlife — a team of graduate students from the University of Colorado Boulder, commissioned by The Nature Conservancy, has worked to identify meaningful outdoor recreation opportunities in the park while preserving the property’s natural and biological values. The team has spoken with industry experts from a variety of recreational activities to analyze potential opportunities and constraints in the new state park. The students’ work is an early step in the pro- cess of assessing the property’s potential for recreation, conservation and other activities which will continue thorough next Spring. Their assessment proceeds the state’s formal public planning process which is slated to begin later in 2020. Join the graduate student team at the A.R. Mitchell Museum of Western Art on Saturday December 14, 2019 at 4 pm as they present their findings.

Healthy soil education funding big topic at Colfax Soil and Water Conservation District’s December meeting

by Brandon Waller

RATON — The second part of the New Mexico Department of Agriculture’s Healthy Soil Program has announced that education and outreach funding is now available, as released at the December meeting of the Colfax County Soil and Water Conservation District’s Board meeting in a report by Dean Bruce, the board’s representative from the NMDA. This program provides funding for projects that envision the advance of soil health and soil health stewardship.

Healthy soil program education and outreach grants enable those who receive funding to pay for the creation of, and the development and delivery of education and community outreach projects as well as materials in support of soil health stewardship. Applications are being received directly by the NMDA for both non-profits and governmental organizations, and private parties are able to apply for the grants through an eligible entity such as their local soil and water conservation district as defined in the healthy soil act. The deadline to apply for funding is January 15, 2020.

The following are examples of eligible activities to receive funding through the grants: workshops and training in soil health stewardship to agricultural producers; workshops and training in soil health stewardship to eligible entities and technical assistance providers; producer to producer education and outreach; education of students and youth about the importance of soil health; and education and outreach for soil assessment and testing.

The Education and Outreach Grant Program is a result of the New Mexico Healthy Soil Act, which was signed into law on April 2nd, 2019. The objective of the act is to promote and support the farming and ranching systems and other forms of land management which increase soil organic matter, aggregate stability, microbiology, and water retention to improve New Mexico’s soil health, yield, and profitability. For more information or to download an application, please visit: www.nmda.nmsu.edu or www.nmda.nmsu.edu/home/divisions/apr/healthy-soil-program/ or call (575) 646-2642.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:46 am and was followed by a festive holiday potluck lunch amongst the members of the board and their guests.

Trinidad Trekkers take off

TRINIDAD — Trinidad Trekkers is a program designed to get Trinidad High School students moving.  Any Trinidad High School student is welcome.  Students start by walking a pre-determined course during part of their lunch period and logging the number of laps they walk.  Once a student has walked 5 miles, they earn a fitness tracker. After earning the fitness tracker, the students can log all their steps for the day.

On December 10, the Trekkers who have logged 30 miles will be going to Raton Aquatics Center to swim for an afternoon.  Seven students have earned this trip.  Students who log 70 miles by May will earn a trip to the Great Sand Dunes for a day.

On January 17, the Trekkers are sponsoring a walking tour of the Trinidad Lake State Park that will be guided by Floyd Duran, the senior ranger.  This tour will include a trip up Long Canyon where the KT boundary is located.  “Trinidad Lake State Park contains one of the best exposures of the famed K-Pg (Cretaceous-Paleogene — formerly known as the K/T, Cretaceous-Tertiary) boundary, where Cretaceous- and Paleogene-aged rocks are separated by an iridium-rich layer that represents an asteroid impact and possibly the extinction of many of the Earth’s dinosaur species.” This should be fun and educational.  All Trinidad High School students are welcome to participate.

Invaluable partners in this project are Ivory Raye from Mt. Carmel Wellness and Community Center and Trinidad Americorp volunteers Alison Mendonca and Sarah Spainhower. Other activities that are being planned are:

• An obstacle course in conjunction with Trinidad Fire Department

• A day of playing Pokemon GO

• A hike This program is being funded by the AIM XL Health and Wellness Grant that Trinidad School District #1 received.
