33rd annual calendar open house at First National Bank

WALSENBURG/TRINIDAD/RATON — Come join all three First National Bank branches Friday,December 7, 9 am to 3 pm for the 33rd annual open house reception and historic collectors’ series calendar distribution. This year’s calendar celebrates newspapers of the area during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Branch addresses are: Trinidad – 100 E. Main Street; Walsenburg – 135 W. 6th Street; Raton – 1247 S. 2nd Street.

Wobbly Mine Strike presentation at La Veta Library today

LA VETA — The La Veta Library will host Nicholas Bernhard Thursday, November 15, 2 pm as he presents a program on the Wobbly Mine Strike. In 1927, the front range of Colorado was dominated by coal mining immigrants who worked long hours for meager pay, horrific accidents were a fact of life, and freedom of speech was limited. Finally they reached their breaking point and went on strike. . Bernhard will cover the origins of the strike and the shocking climax at the Columbine Mine. WALSENBURG — The next Central Committee Monthly Meeting of the Huerfano County Democratic Party will be today, Thursday, November 15, 5:30 pm in the Walsenburg Housing authority activity room, 220 Russell Street (across from the outreach clinic). FAFSA Night at John Mall High School

WALSENBURG — Thursday, November 15, 5 to 7 pm come for dinner at John Mall High School, 355 W Pine St., to learn about Financial Aid for HS Seniors. Financial aid advisors will help you and your student create FAFSA IDs and complete an application. Huerfano County Coat Drive

WALSENBURG — The Huerfano County Department of Social Services will be accepting donations of coats, hats, gloves and winter sweaters that are new or gently used for children and adults through Friday, November 16. CVCCS Thanksgiving service and Christmas Basket food drive kickoff

LA VETA — The Cuchara Valley Christian Community Services is sponsoring a Thanksgiving service Friday Nov. 16, 6pm at La Veta United Methodist Church, 416 S Main Street.

The purpose of the service is to kick off the non-perishable and non-expired food drive for Christmas dinnr baskets for families in need in the Cuchara Valley. The food drive will run from November 16 through December 16 at participating churches and vendors in the Cuchara Valley. St. Mary Catholic Church float assembly for Parade of Lights

WALSENBURG — St. Mary Catholic Church will be entering the 29th Annual Holiday parade of Lights scheduled for Friday November 23, 7 pm. Please join us for our float assembly at the school district bus barn starting Friday, November 16, 6 to 8 pm and Sat. and Sun. November 17 &18, 2 to 6 pm. A Taste of Huerfano County celebration

WALSENBURG — The Early Learning Center is hosting the 1st Taste of Huerfano County fall harvest celebration Saturday, November 17, 4:30 to 6:30 pm at Washington Underground. Local restaurants and organizations will be on site with samples of local food and information. The cost is $5 for ages 13 and up, $1 for 5-13 years and children under 5 are free. The Economic Impact of Natural Gas Development presentation.

LA VETA — A special presentation hosted by Citizens for Huerfano County (CHC) will be held Saturday, November 17, 1 pm at La Veta Mercantile, 300 Main Street. This talk by Andrew Forkes-Gudmundson, who is touring Colorado, is based on his 2018 report “Economic Impact of Natural Gas Devel-opment on Delta County.” This report compares the value of leading sources of county revenue, such as sustainable agri- culture, tourism, art and music, recreation, and renewable energy, to the revenue from natural gas development.

We are facing the same issues here in Huerfano County. We need to be informed about the cost-benefits of oil and gas development on our leading sources of potentially-impacted current revenue. CHC invites you to attend this presentation to gain insight and information.

PPACG Area Agency on Aging – Medicare information/one-on-one counseling rescheduled

WALSENBURG — The Pikes Peak Area Agency on Aging is pleased to announce a Medicare counselor will be in Walsenburg this open enrollment period as part of our outreach effort to rural communities on Monday, November 19, by appointment only from 9 am until 4 pm with a State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) counselor in Walsenburg (Huerfano County Community Center – 928 Russell). (This event was rescheduled due to inclement weather last week.)

The SHIP program can be reached through the statewide toll-free number (888) 696-7213. SHIP does not sell or endorse any insurance, but serves as advocates for those over 60 and those on Medicare, to educate and assist with the following: Understand basic Medicare Benefits – A, B and D, Part D plan review & comparison, Medicare appeals, Low Income Subsidy, and Medicare Savings Plan (MSP). Other senior insurance options like: Medigaps/Supplements, Medicare Advantage Plans, or Employer Group Plans.

Community Thanksgiving Dinner

WALSENBURG — Sangre de Cristo Center for Youth is hosting its annual FREE Thanksgiving Dinner for the community. The dinner will be held at the Eagle’s Hall on Monday, November 19. The meal will begin at 5 pm, and we will serve the community till 7 pm. Community members can get their meal to go, if necessary. Sangre de Cristo Center for Youth wants to thank the communities of Huerfano County for their continued support and participation in the life journeys of the youth of Huerfano. American Legion Post 16 Meeting

WALSENBURG — The American Legion Post 16 and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 16, will meet Tuesday, November 20, 6:30 pm. Before and after parade party at Eagles Hall

WALSENBURG — The Walsenburg Eagles Ladies Auxiliary #1187 invites everyone to join us for the Annual Parade of Lights scheduled for Friday, November 23. Huerfano County Fair Board annual meeting

LA VETA — The Huerfano County Fair Board will be having their annual election Tuesday, November 27, 6 pm, at the Huerfano County Fairgrounds. There are four positions to fill, 3-3 yr. terms and 1-1 yr. term. We need dedicated people to support the youth in our county and insure our county fair continues to thrive.

Responsibilities include a monthly meet- ing, the last Tuesday of each month, fair- ground maintenance and clean-ups, plan and organize the Huerfano County fair and our annual fundraiser, Mudfest; basically fill in wherever your needed.

New Hope Reunion Feast

WALSENBURG — New Hope Community Church of Walsenburg invites those who have attended or visited the church or the legacy church, Calvary Baptist, to visit once again at a special event. The New Hope Reunion Feast will feature a $1 dinner plate of pulled pork BBQ and sides. The dinner will be Saturday, December 1, 6 pm in the church fellowship hall at 801 Pennsylvania. Yuletide around the World: La Veta Annual Holiday Arts Fund Raiser

LA VETA — In honor of the tenth anniversary of the La Veta arts community’s annual end of year culinary fund raising event, the funding beneficiaries have been expanded to include the La Veta Public Library’s Scary Story Contest, the Francisco Center for the Performing Arts (FCPA) Theater and the recently formed FCPA Show Choir.

The event is on Saturday, December 1 from 5 to 7:30 pm. Beth Evans of the Shala- walla Gallery produced the colorful poster and tickets; as she has done so graciously and creatively for the past several years. The six participating venues are: La Veta Gallery on Main, SPACe, Funky Monkey Art Space, Shalawalla Gallery & Gift Shop, La Veta School of the Arts, and Silvershoe.

The FCPA Show Choir will provide Christmas caroling during this year’s event. Each venue will provide some type of inter- national food and refreshment to ticket holders. The La Veta Gallery on Main will provide a selection of desserts. The other lo- cations will provide taster or small plate offer- ings along with a liquid refreshment. Each venue will also be holding a drawing for a prize of their choosing. All ticket holders will be entered in the master drawing for an adult art scholarship with an estimated value of at least $100. The master drawing will be held that evening at the La Veta Gallery on Main. Tickets are $25 each and are now available for purchase at the participating venues. Come stroll among six La Veta art galleries, enjoying a variety of delicious dishes from around the world, as well as an exceptional variety of artwork while contributing to local art programs and scholarships for both adults and children. 21st Annual Gift of Art Show at SPACe

LA VETA — Enjoy original artwork by 20 area artists plus Trinidad artists Henrietta Butler, Gordon Lucero, Linn Baker, and Louise Clapp, as well as Denver artists Pat Newell and Diane Lather Belfour are all showing collections of their work in the Fuller Gallery along with 14 artists in the Main Gallery.

Artists have chosen to offer works that would make great gifts. In addition, the Gift Shop offers fabulous jewelry, outstanding pottery, photography, cards, prints and original paintings, all made by SPACe members. SPACe is open Tues. & Thurs. 11 – 3 and Sat. 10 – 4.

What’s going on at the WU?

WALSENBURG — Washington Underground has many active living programs geared for people of all ages. Adult Co-ed Basketball is every Wednesday night from 6:30-8:30 pm in the gym. Get off the couch and join the fun!

Boot Camp with Michael Reynolds is every Tuesday night at Washington Underground from 5:30-6:30 pm. No experience needed, just the desire to get fit! Yoga is offered three times a week at Washington Underground: Tuesday & Thursday at noon and Friday night at 5:15pm. Senior Exercise is Tuesday & Thursday mornings at 10am in the Washington Underground Gym. Increase your activity with this fun class for ages 60+. Come to any of these programs or just drop by and use the equipment in the weight room!

 

City seeking volunteers for historic preservation board

WALSENBURG — The City of Walsenburg is seeking two additional volunteers to serve on a Historical Preservation Board authorized with the approval of Ordinance 1067 establishing a Certified Local Government. The five member board is charged with developing criteria for the review and designation of historic resources, review and determine qualifications for properties for designation as either an historic structure, site, or districts, conduct surveys of potential historic sites or properties and then develop and assist with public education programs that relates specifically to historical preservation.

The two board positions will serve a four year term. Meetings are conducted a mini- mum of four times a year but may meet more frequently to fulfill the responsibilities of the board.

Citizens interested in serving on the His- toric Preservation Board can pick up applications and an outline of board responsibilities and requirements by contacting the City Clerk. Applications with a letter of interest must be returned to City Hall by Monday, December 3. Applicants will be reviewed with recommendations on membership submitted to the City Council for approval at the council meeting scheduled for early January.

America Recycles Day sponsored by Trinidad Tech Shop today!

TRINIDAD — America Recycles Day was started in 1997 by the National Recycling Coalition and is declared each year by Presidential Proclamation, encouraging Americans to commit to recycling. Since 2009, this day has been a program of Keep America Beautiful.

The Trinidad Tech Shop has pledged to do our part in responsibly recycling end of life electronics and refurbishing useful gadgets for our community and those around us. Please drop off your unused home or business electronics during this event, Thursday, November 15 11 am – 7 pm, at Trinidad Tech Shop, 200 Elm Street. We make sure your e-waste is processed correctly. This event is FREE OF CHARGE.

Last year we recycled about 200 lbs of electronics during our event. Since then our business has grown and we recycle that much or more regularly. We hope to make a much larger impact this year with the help of the community.

 

Heritage Nights: Sarah Bloom’s Gingerbread Cookies at THM tonight

TRINIDAD — Each month on the Third Thursday, the Trinidad History Museum, 120 S Chestnut Street, will be hosting a heritage night focusing on different aspects of Colorado life. The next Heritage Night is Thursday, November 15, 5 to 7 pm. Enjoy sweets, treats, and hands-on activities!

November’s topic will be Sarah Bloom’s Gingerbread Cookies. These programs are geared towards adults, but all ages are welcome.

 

Amanda Palmer Farewell at Trinidad History Museum

TRINIDAD — The Trinidad History Museum will say goodbye to their current Creative-in- Residence, Amanda Palmer Friday, November 16, 5 to 8 pm at the museum, 120 S. Chestnut Street. All are welcome to this special reception to see the work Amanda created during her residency.

 

Trinidad Historical Society fall dinner

TRINIDAD — Friday, November 16, at TSJC the Trinidad Historical Society will hold its annual Fall Dinner. Dinner is $15 per person. The deadline for reservations is November 8. You do not have to be a member of the Trini- dad Historical Society to attend the dinner, but reservations are required. Mail reservations to Trinidad Historical Society, P.O. The program for the evening will feature the historic “Trinidad Opera House Block” which was built in 1882 on the southwest corner of Main and Commercial Streets. You will hear about some of the places that did business there, see photographs from as early as the 1880s. Join us for an up-to-date photo tour and see some of the fascinating interior details that have survived.

The 136 year old building, now empty, has been deteriorating for years and is possibly in danger of being destroyed. The Trinidad Historical Society would like to share with you its concerns that this vital piece of Trinidad’s history should not be demolished.

The program will be held in the Pioneer Room of the Sullivan Student Center at Trinidad State Junior College. Everyone is welcome to attend the event. Plan to arrive at 6 pm. Dinner will be served at 6:30 pm, followed by the program.

Thanksgiving Food Drive at First National continues until Saturday

TRINIDAD — The First National Bank begins their 2018 food drive at the First National Bank, Wal-Mart Location, 2921 Toupal Drive Thursday, November 1. The food drive will continue until Saturday, November 17. Food items and cash donations are collected at the Wal-Mart Branch of the First National Bank in Trinidad.

First National Bank presents Santa’s Gift Tree

TRINIDAD/WALSENBURG — Join First National Bank in Trinidad in their annual North Pole Gift Tree program, beginning Monday, November 19, and concluding Friday, December 14.

Every year, over 250 local senior citizens write letters to Santa, which are hung on trees in First National Bank’s Walsenburg, 135 W. 6th and Trinidad, 100 E Main Street locations. Pick a letter from the tree on display in the bank lobby and fulfill the request (maximum $25 value). Bring your wrapped gift back by Friday, December 14. TRINIDAD — Wear your lighted bling, lights, glow neck-laces, etc. and come down to Main Street Saturday, November 24, 6 to 7 pm for the Annual Parade of Lights. This event is hosted by Hometown Holidays.

 

Alzheimer’s Association community forum

TRINIDAD — Las Animas County residents and community leaders are invited to take part in a town hall-format discus- sion to help identify regional needs and opportunities for serving those families affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias Tuesday, December 4, 10 am to noon at the Trinidad Housing Authority, 422 E. First Street.

The community forum will seek input from people across the region, including business owners, public officials, health

care professionals, church employees, librarians and others regarding the short- and long-term needs of citizens who are now or someday will be living with dementia.

The Alzheimer’s Association also hopes to identify volunteer resources in the community. Colorado currently has 71,000 people living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. With a statewide staff of less than 50, the Colorado Chapter relies heavily on volunteers to ensure the delivery of education, programs and services to families at no charge.

RATON — Christmas is just around the corner! Come get a head start on your holiday shopping Saturday, November 17, 9 am – 3 pm at Raton Convention Center, 901 S 3rd Street. Loads of handmade crafts and items for sale by numerous vendors. Food will also be available.

 

Toy Land Character Contest

RATON — The Raton Lions Club is having their second annual Toy Land Character Contest. We invited contestants to use their talent to create new characters that will be displayed on Apache Avenue on the way to City of Bethlehem.

The winners will be judged and winners will be on Saturday, November 17 at Climax Canyon. Judging begins at 1 pm. Winners will receive: First place – $150; Second Place – $100; Third Place – $75; Fourth Place – $50.

Operation Christmas Child Samaritan’s Purse collection week

RATON — Operation Christmas Child partners with churches worldwide to reach boys and girls with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Knights of Columbus Turkey Bingo

CIMARRON — The Knights of Columbus invites you to an evening of Bingo, Sunday, November 18, 4 pm at the ICC Parish Hall. There will be turkey and money bingos and a door prize table. Food concessions will be available.

Free Entry at Sugarite Canyon State Park

RATON — New Mexico State Parks is proudly joining other states by waiving fees on Black Friday, November 23, 7 am to 6 pm in support of retailer REI and a growing number of other organizations who are encouraging people to spend more time outdoors. New Mexico State Parks will be waiving the $5 day- use fees for all 34 state parks.

RATON — Raton Lions Club is proud to announce the opening of the annual holiday display, City of Bethlehem, Friday, No- vember 23, 6 pm at Climax Canyon. The City of Bethlehem will be open through December 31.

 

Toys for Tots Reindeer Dash

RATON — The annual 5k Fun Run/Walk is Saturday, November 24, 10 am at the Raton Regional Aquatic Center. The registration fee is $25 in advance or $30 on the day of the race. Runners and Walkers Welcome! Proceeds go to Raton Police Department’s “Toys for Tots” program. Awards and festivities at the Raton Regional Aquatic Center after the race. Raton Humane Society photos with Santa

RATON — Saturday November 24 at the Shuler Theatre, 131 N. 2nd Street, the Raton Humane Society will have Photos with Santa 10 am-3 pm. The cost is $5 for 4 photos (2 of 2 poses) and this popular event is a great time to get holiday photos with your pets. We can accommodate all pets but please make sure they are on a leash.
