HUERFANO

The Life and Times of Charles Goodnight at La Veta Library today

LA VETA — Come for an entertaining history presentation this afternoon, Thursday, January 17, 2 pm in the La Veta Library meeting room. Linda Crawford and Laurel Campbell, co-chairs of the Goodnight Barn preservation committee will present an informative talk and slide show on the history of Charles Goodnight’s life including his time as a Texas ranger, Indian Scout, his work on the cattle trail and his eventual purchase of the Rock Canyon Ranch and the famous Goodnight Barn built in 1870. The focus of this program, sponsored by the Friends of La Veta Library, is Western Heritage in Colorado and its preservation for future generations.

WALSENBURG — The next monthly meeting of the Central Committee will be tonight, Thursday, January 17, 5:30 pm at the Walsenburg Housing Authority activity room, 220 Russell Street. Let’s start planning for victory in 2020!

 

Movie night at La Veta Mercantile

LA VETA — Wear your PJ’s, bring a blanket, and watch a free movie on the big screen tonight, Thursday, January 17, 6 pm. La Veta Mercantile will be hosting FREE movie night the third Thursday of the winter months. Kid friendly, yummy free popcorn, and the usual beverages and snacks will be available for purchase. SPACe winter hours and call for artists

LA VETA — SPACe gallery will have limited hours through- out January. The Spanish Peaks Arts Council will only be open on Saturdays, 10 am to 2 pm until February 7.

Beginning Thursday, February 7, 11 am – 2 pm, SPACe will be accepting artwork for the SPACe Members’ Show which opens February 12. Members may also bring artwork on Saturday, February 9 between 10am and 2pm. New members are welcome to participate. Entry forms are available to print on

the SPACe website, www.spanishpeaksarts.org. Or come in on Saturday to pick one up.

In conjunction with the Members’ Show, local artist and art professor Kenny Schneider will show a collection of new works based on the ex-voto theme, made popular by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. For more information, please visit the SPACe website.

 

SCCY swim field trip on Friday

WALSENBURG — Friday, January 18, 11 am to 4 pm, Sangre de Cristo Center for Youth will head to Raton to have a fun day at the aquatic park. The cost of the trip is $5. Students need to bring a sack lunch. We will leave Walsenburg at 11 am and be back in town around 4 pm. Seth will do his pick ups at the same time. Bring a towel and your bathing suits. Be ready to have a blast and enjoy the day.

 

Celtic Orphans at the Mercantile

LA VETA — Come get some pub grub, and listen to some very talented musicians known as our beloved Celtic Orphans at Pub Night Friday, January 18, 6 pm. Enjoy some adult beverages, soda, tea and coffee as well as “snackage in a package” Come out to enjoy truly incredible artists and it’s FREE.

 

History Happenings at La Veta Library

LA VETA — The Huerfano County Historical Society is presenting a series of “History Happenings,” Sunday afternoon discussion/presentations salon-style. These events will highlight happenings that affected Huerfano history. Please join us for one or all of our titillating sessions.

You are invited to the second event of the Huerfano County Historical Society’s History Happenings series, Sun- day afternoon “salons” for history lovers. On Sunday, January 20, 2 pm at the La Veta Library we will focus on DNA testing to learn about your own history. Local favorite, Professor Emeritus and molecular geneticist, Mary Ann Nelson, Ph.D. will lead a discussion about the emerging field. Please join us for: Tracing your own history through DNA testing: What it’s all about, legitimate services available and ethical considerations. This salon is co-sponsored by the HCHS and the La Veta Public Library.

 

January Moonlight Howl and Growl

CUCHARA — Join members of the Spanish Peaks Alpine Alliance on Sunday, January 20, for the first full moon outing of 2019! The January full moon is commonly known as the Wolf Moon. To that end, we will share tales of wolves, werewolves, lunar fact and fiction, and more. For this event we will have two groups: one on XC skis and another on snowshoes. THE EVENT IS FREE!

We will meet at Cuchara Mountain Park Day Lodge. (Or in this case – aka the Moonlight Lodge!) The event begins at 5 pm and ends around 8 pm. Hot drinks and snacks will be provided but feel free to bring your own and some to share. We will first head out shortly after the moon rises a bit after sunset. After we tour around on skis and snowshoes we will meet back at the lodge for food, drink, and fun.

Bring your XC skis or snowshoes, along with warm clothes/boots (dress in layers and no cotton!). Headlamps and flashlights are OK for emergencies, but we try not to use them as they actually diminish our night vision. Let’s get out to enjoy the snow, moon, friendship, and our beautiful Cuchara Mountain Park!

SPECIAL NOTE: A total lunar eclipse begins about the time our event ends and runs for about three hours.

Spanish Peaks Business Alliance mixer

LA VETA — Please join us on Monday, January 21, 6 to 8 pm at The Bugling Bull, 220 S. Main Street for our January Spanish Peaks Business Alliance Mixer. The evening mixer will feature food provided by the Bugling Bull and a presentation by the La Veta Mercantile regarding an upcoming event called “Huerfano Soup”. All members of the county are welcome and encouraged to attend. Together we can make a difference by supporting local businesses throughout our region! The Mixer is free for members or $10 for non-members.

Diabetes self-management workshop at Spanish Peaks Regional Outreach Clinic

WALSENBURG — A series of four free workshops, presented by Yvonne Romero RN CDE, will be held Thursdays, 2 to 4 pm at Spanish Peaks Outreach Clinic, 129 Kansas Ave beginning, January 24 and concluding on February 14. Singer-Songwriter Dana Cooper at La Veta Mercantile

LA VETA — La Veta Mercantile is proud to present Dana Cooper, Friday, January 25, 7 pm. Tickets are $15 at the door. Dana Cooper is an award-winning singer-songwriter from Missouri. His awards include the 2014 Heritage Musi- cian award from the Pilgrim Center for the Arts in Kansas City, MO and Folk Alliance International’s 2015 Spirit of Folk award. He has performed on Austin City Limits, Mountain Stage and at the Kerrville Folk Festival. Cooper’s songs have been recorded by a long list of artists that include Trout Fishing in America, Rex Foster, Claire Lynch, Maura O’Connell, Pierce Pettis, and Susan Werner. Fellow singer-songwriter Buzz Holland has said “Cooper is a person who can sing like an angel and play like the devil.

 

American Red Cross Disaster Training Institute

LA VETA — The American Red Cross will hold a one day disaster training event Saturday, January 26, 9 am to 5 pm at La Veta Community Center, 131 E Ryus Avenue. The Disaster Training Institute is a free one-day event offering of courses to support and help prepare your community in a disaster relief operation. Ancestors Exhibition open call to artists at MOF

WALSENBURG — The Ancestor Exhibition at Museum of Friends is having an open call to artists, photographers and community members who would like to reflect on their deceased ancestors’ lives Saturday, January 26, 12 pm. Each artist will be given a 10′ space to install their works.

WALSENBURG — Knights of Columbus will host a pancake breakfast Sunday, January 27, 11:30 to 1 pm at Delaney Hall on E. 7th. Adults eat a delicious breakfast for $7 and children under 10 are free. Everyone is welcome!

 

Get out those chili recipes for a Super (Chili) Bowl competition at the FOX

WALSENBURG — Sunday, February 3, 3 to 10 pm there will be a Chili Cook-Off & Big Game Watch Party at the Fox Theatre. There is a $10 entrance fee to enter your chili into the competition and a $10 donation to sample the competition chili and cast your vote for best red and green chili. Desserts will also be for sale. Winners receive a prize package that includes cash, gift certificates, and other donated items.

 

Huerfano County Democratic Party reorganization meeting

WALSENBURG — The very important county reorganization meeting for the Huerfano County Democratic Party will be held Thursday, February 7, 5:30 pm at the Walsen- burg Housing Authority activity room, 220 Russell Avenue. At this meeting we will be electing the party executive board who will serve for the next two years. At the meeting, there shall be elected a chair, vice chair, secretary and treasurer. Any Democratic elector of the county shall be eligible for election to those offices. Each county may select any other officers provided for in the county rules.

Heritage Nights: Photo preservation at the Trinidad History Museum tonight

TRINIDAD — Each month on the Third Thursday, the Trinidad History Museum, 120 S. Chestnut St., will be hosting a heritage night focusing on different aspects of Colorado life. This month Heritage Night will be held Thursday, January 17, 5 to 7 pm and the topic is Photo Preservation. Enjoy sweets, treats, and hands-on activities! These programs are geared towards adults, but all ages are welcome.

 

Hands on History at THM: Parchment & invisible ink

TRINIDAD — This Friday, January 18, 1 to 4 pm students can learn all about historical writ- ing on parchment and about other early written works. These pieces were written on stone tablets and tell us a lot of about the civ- ilizations they belong to. This week we will learn about some of the different ways civilizations preserved their stories and the different mediums they used over the centuries.

We will be making our own (fake) parchment to write our own stories on, and for added fun, we will also make invisible ink. The cost of attendance is $9/student (grades 1-8). Growing Readers Together-READ!

TRINIDAD — The Carnegie Public Library, 202 N. Animas St., is presenting a series of 5 events for caregivers and kiddos ages 6 and under beginning Friday, January 18, 2 to 4 pm. This is the first in a series of 5 events for care- givers (babysitters, grandparents, and other non-licensed providers) and kiddos ages 6 and under, to come learn and play with us! Each participant will leave with a goodies bag of books and toys .

 

Adult reading at the Carnegie-Hubble Telescope

TRINIDAD — The adult reading program is held each year during the first quarter. This year’s theme is A Universe of Stories: The story of the universe. We will be taking this year’s theme quite literally, the core of the pro- gram will be a series of presentations high- lighting astonishing discoveries about the world we live in. Also, we’ll be revisiting the very popular adult spelling bee, and we’ll feature a presentation on how to use the Library’s powerful databases. Two science fiction movies will round out the program. Pick up a reading list for science and science fiction books available at the Library.

The next program, Friday January 18, 5:30–6:30 pm, The Hubble telescope its history and images. The Hubble Telescope (HST) was launched in 1990 and since that time we have been awed and amazed at the images and data it has collected that allows us to gain insight into our universe further than imagined. From galaxies far away, to incredible super novas and nebulas, and the moon in our back yard it’s more than just pretty pictures. Come learn more about the Hubble Space Telescope.

The next programs will be held on: Tuesday January 29, 5:30–6:30 pm, “Other solar systems” and Tuesday, February 5 5:30–6:30 pm, “Measuring astronomical distances”.

 

Fire Line at Spanish Peaks Inn

GULNARE — Fire Line band will perform at Spanish Peaks Inn in scenic Gulnare Friday, January 18, 7:30 to 11:30 pm. there is a $5 cover charge. Spanish Peaks Inn also serves delicious food with daily specials.

 

Rally for love, justice, and peace

TRINIDAD — Attendees will gather with signs at the intersection of Main Street and Santa Fe Trail Saturday, January 19, 11 am to 1 pm. The rally is in support of these themes: human rights, healthcare, justice, protection of environment and wildlife, voting rights, government accountability, and other progressive issues. Bring a chair if you need one!

 

Free diabetes prevention program

TRINIDAD — This free class series will take place Tuesdays from 2-3 pm and concludes on January 29 at the Las Animas County Health Department board room, 412 Benedicta Avenue. The next meeting is Tuesday, January 22. Food is power, but being overweight can cause health problems, including diabetes. Join us in preventing diabetes and keeping you healthy in 2019!

Self care series at Carnegie

TRINIDAD — Carnegie Library staff member, Rahma Siddiqui, attended medical school in Chicago. There, she saw first-hand how important lifestyle choices were to the overall mental, physical, and emotional health of a person. After graduating in 2014, she delayed residency to learn holistic healing methods. She created a highly successful and extensive self-care program in 2016 for her private clients.

This series is a condensed version of her original program, aimed at helping members of the community of Trinidad get a jumpstart on their New Year’s resolutions. Here’s the January schedule: The next event will be held Wednesday, January 23, 5:30 to 7 pm and covers “Nutrition”~How to figure out what diet is ideal for you and how to stick to it for the long haul (plus why it’s important). January 30, “Movement” ~ Understanding the dif- ference between working out and an active lifestyle. How to create room for both and why you need to.

 

Borderlands of Southern Colorado-Maria Montoya presentation

TRINIDAD — The next installment of the Speaker Series at Trinidad History Museum, 120 S Chestnut Street, will be on Wednesday, January 23, 6 to 7:30 pm will feature Maria Montoya speaking on the Boderlands of Southern Colorado.

Maria E. Montoya is an Associate Professor of History at New York University and the Dean of Arts and Sciences at NYU Shanghai. She is the author of numerous articles on the History of the American West, Environmental, Labor and Latina/o history and of the book, Translating Property: The Maxwell Land Grant and the Conflict over Land in the American West, 1840-1900. She is the lead author on the U.S. History textbook, Global Americans: A Social

and Global History of the United States. She is also finishing up a manuscript, Fighting for the Fringe: Two Industrialists, Their Workers, and Employee Benefits, 1909-1950, which focuses on John D. Rockefeller and Josephine Roche, and their roles in de- fining the spheres of work and home life during the early 20th century. She is also working on two other manuscripts, A Chicana in China which is a memoir inspired by an earlier work of Rudolfo Anaya. She is also working on a book project about the scarcity of water in the American Southwest, and the Rio Grande in particular. She is currently the PI for Zaanheh: A Natural History of Shanghai which is an interdisciplinary research team based at NYU Shanghai, and which was inspired by Eric Sanderson’s Manhattan Project.

 

Hands on History at THM: Dungeons & Dragons

TRINIDAD — Friday, January 25, 1 pm at the Trinidad His- tory Museum, the Hands on History participants will play Dungeons and Dragons! There’s no better way to learn about storytelling and math than through Dungeons and Dragons! Ashley St. Lawrence, our creative in residence, will be the Dungeon Master (DM) and teach us how to creative characters and play Dungeons and Dragons!

Free spin class at Spin Revolution

TRINIDAD — If you’ve ever wondered if a spin class is for you, try out our free introductory class Saturday, January 26, 9 to 10:30 am at Spin Revolution, 132 N. Commercial Street. TRINIDAD — In compliance with Article V, Section 1 of the Bylaws of the Las Animas County Republican Central Committee, notice is hereby given that the organizational meeting of the Las Animas County Republican Central Committee shall be held at the following date, time and location:

Thursday, February 7, 6 pm at the Issac Walton League Building, 1900 Santa Fe Drive. Check in and registration for the organizational meeting shall begin at 5:30 pm.

Crime Stoppers provides a telephone number and online secure reporting form to encourage citizens in the community to anonymously volunteer vital information helpful to law enforcement agencies to fight against crime.

Certified Food Manager class today

RATON — The Center for Sustainable Community, 130 Park Avenue will host a Food Manager Class Thursday, January 17, 8 am to 4 pm.

Do you need a Food Manager Certification to work in your restaurant or food business? Sign up for this LOCAL class conducted by Florence Higgins R.S. Certified Food Service In- structor. The training consists of lecture, chapter quizzes, hands on demonstrations, and group problem solving. Each student receives a copy of the Certified Food Manager Text book (developed by the National Environmental Health Association, NEHA)

Raton food distributions for January

RATON — Food supplementation programs are important for our community. Several organizations provide food for people in need. The Raton schedule is: Thursday, January 17 , 8 am to 11 am at St. Vincent De Paul thrift store; Friday, January 18, 10 to 11 am and 1 to 3 pm at the Raton Senior Center; Friday January 25, 10 am until food is gone (Ministerial Alliance) at the old City Market building on South 2nd Street.

CIMARRON — Cimarron United Methodist Women’s Open Hands Thrift Store, 357 E 9th Street, is having a book sale now until Saturday, January 19. Store hours are 10 to 3 pm. We have lots and lots of books!

 

Beginners computer class at Arthur Johnson Memorial Library

RATON — There will be a computer class for beginners Saturday, January 19, 10 am to 5 pm at Arthur Johnson Memorial Library, 244 Cook Avenue. Raton MainStreet balloon rally logo contest for middle/ high school students

RATON — We want your design for this year’s International Santa Fe Trail Balloon Rally logo! Winning logo will be used in advertisements, t-shirts, and pins. Submit your design to the Raton MainStreet Office, at 145 S. First Street no later than Friday, February 22. Entries must include the following wording somewhere in the design in order to be considered — “2019 International Santa Fe Trail Balloon Rally” and “Raton, NM” Design requirements:

Women’s March for Southern Colorado

Food safety training for cottage food producers

PUEBLO — Are you interested in bringing your home-made food products to market? This training offered by CSU Extension-Pueblo County will provide food safety training required by the Colorado Cottage Food Act. Extension Agent, Laura Krause, will present Cottage Food Safety Training for Colorado Cottage Food Producers on Friday, January 25, 1 to 4 pm at CSU Extension, 701 Court Street, Suite C. Learn foods that are permissible in the Cottage Foods Act, ingredient labeling requirements, as well as basic food safety for a home business. There is a registration fee of $40. A to Z of Bees

PUEBLO — Colorado State University Extension of Pueblo County presents a two part class on Wednesday, January 30 and February 13, 6 to 9 pm at the CSU extension office, 701 Court Street, Ste C. The cost of the class is $20/person or $30 for a couple. The registration deadline is January 25. Payment is required at the time of registration. We accept cash or checks made payable to Pueblo County Extension Program Fund through our office. Topics covered in the two classes are: housing and equipment, safety gear, management and care of bees, and food sources.
