The Life and Times of Charles Goodnight at La Veta Library today
LA VETA — Come for an entertaining history presentation this afternoon, Thursday, January 17, 2 pm in the La Veta Library meeting room. Linda Crawford and Laurel Campbell, co-chairs of the Goodnight Barn preservation committee will present an informative talk and slide show on the history of Charles Goodnight’s life including his time as a Texas ranger, Indian Scout, his work on the cattle trail and his eventual purchase of the Rock Canyon Ranch and the famous Goodnight Barn built in 1870. The focus of this program, sponsored by the Friends of La Veta Library, is Western Heritage in Colorado and its preservation for future generations.

SPACe winter hours and call for artists
LA VETA — SPACe gallery will have limited hours through- out January. The Spanish Peaks Arts Council will only be open on Saturdays, 10 am to 2 pm until February 7.
Beginning Thursday, February 7, 11 am – 2 pm, SPACe will be accepting artwork for the SPACe Members’ Show which opens February 12. Members may also bring artwork on Saturday, February 9 between 10am and 2pm. New members are welcome to participate. Entry forms are available to print on
the SPACe website, www.spanishpeaksarts.org. Or come in on Saturday to pick one up.

SCCY swim field trip on Friday
WALSENBURG — Friday, January 18, 11 am to 4 pm, Sangre de Cristo Center for Youth will head to Raton to have a fun day at the aquatic park. The cost of the trip is $5. Students need to bring a sack lunch. We will leave Walsenburg at 11 am and be back in town around 4 pm. Seth will do his pick ups at the same time. Bring a towel and your bathing suits. Be ready to have a blast and enjoy the day.

LA VETA — The Huerfano County Historical Society is presenting a series of “History Happenings,” Sunday afternoon discussion/presentations salon-style. These events will highlight happenings that affected Huerfano history. Please join us for one or all of our titillating sessions.
You are invited to the second event of the Huerfano County Historical Society’s History Happenings series, Sun- day afternoon “salons” for history lovers. On Sunday, January 20, 2 pm at the La Veta Library we will focus on DNA testing to learn about your own history. Local favorite, Professor Emeritus and molecular geneticist, Mary Ann Nelson, Ph.D. will lead a discussion about the emerging field. January Moonlight Howl and Growl
CUCHARA — Join members of the Spanish Peaks Alpine Alliance on Sunday, January 20, for the first full moon outing of 2019! The January full moon is commonly known as the Wolf Moon. To that end, we will share tales of wolves, werewolves, lunar fact and fiction, and more. For this event we will have two groups: one on XC skis and another on snowshoes. THE EVENT IS FREE!
We will meet at Cuchara Mountain Park Day Lodge. (Or in this case – aka the Moonlight Lodge!) The event begins at 5 pm and ends around 8 pm. Hot drinks and snacks will be provided but feel free to bring your own and some to share. We will first head out shortly after the moon rises a bit after sunset. After we tour around on skis and snowshoes we will meet back at the lodge for food, drink, and fun.
Bring your XC skis or snowshoes, along with warm clothes/boots (dress in layers and no cotton!). Headlamps and flashlights are OK for emergencies, but we try not to use them as they actually diminish our night vision. Let’s get out to enjoy the snow, moon, friendship, and our beautiful Cuchara Mountain Park!
SPECIAL NOTE: A total lunar eclipse begins about the time our event ends and runs for about three hours.

Singer-Songwriter Dana Cooper at La Veta Mercantile
LA VETA — La Veta Mercantile is proud to present Dana Cooper, Friday, January 25, 7 pm. Tickets are $15 at the door. Dana Cooper is an award-winning singer-songwriter from Missouri. His awards include the 2014 Heritage Musi- cian award from the Pilgrim Center for the Arts in Kansas City, MO and Folk Alliance International’s 2015 Spirit of Folk award. He has performed on Austin City Limits, Mountain Stage and at the Kerrville Folk Festival. Cooper’s songs have been recorded by a long list of artists that include Trout Fishing in America, Rex Foster, Claire Lynch, Maura O’Connell, Pierce Pettis, and Susan Werner. American Red Cross Disaster Training Institute
LA VETA — The American Red Cross will hold a one day disaster training event Saturday, January 26, 9 am to 5 pm at La Veta Community Center, 131 E Ryus Avenue. The Disaster Training Institute is a free one-day event offering of courses to support and help prepare your community in a disaster relief operation. WALSENBURG — Sunday, February 3, 3 to 10 pm there will be a Chili Cook-Off & Big Game Watch Party at the Fox Theatre. There is a $10 entrance fee to enter your chili into the competition and a $10 donation to sample the competition chili and cast your vote for best red and green chili. Desserts will also be for sale. Winners receive a prize package that includes cash, gift certificates, and other donated items.
Huerfano County Democratic Party reorganization meeting
WALSENBURG — The very important county reorganization meeting for the Huerfano County Democratic Party will be held Thursday, February 7, 5:30 pm at the Walsen- burg Housing Authority activity room, 220 Russell Avenue. At this meeting we will be electing the party executive board who will serve for the next two years. At the meeting, there shall be elected a chair, vice chair, secretary and treasurer. Any Democratic elector of the county shall be eligible for election to those offices. Each county may select any other officers provided for in the county rules.

Heritage Nights: Photo preservation at the Trinidad History Museum tonight
TRINIDAD — Each month on the Third Thursday, the Trinidad History Museum, 120 S. Chestnut St., will be hosting a heritage night focusing on different aspects of Colorado life. This month Heritage Night will be held Thursday, January 17, 5 to 7 pm and the topic is Photo Preservation. Enjoy sweets, treats, and hands-on activities! These programs are geared towards adults, but all ages are welcome.
Hands on History at THM: Parchment & invisible ink
TRINIDAD — This Friday, January 18, 1 to 4 pm students can learn all about historical writ- ing on parchment and about other early written works. These pieces were written on stone tablets and tell us a lot of about the civ- ilizations they belong to. This week we will learn about some of the different ways civilizations preserved their stories and the different mediums they used over the centuries.

TRINIDAD — The Carnegie Public Library, 202 N. Animas St., is presenting a series of 5 events for caregivers and kiddos ages 6 and under beginning Friday, January 18, 2 to 4 pm. This is the first in a series of 5 events for care- givers (babysitters, grandparents, and other non-licensed providers) and kiddos ages 6 and under, to come learn and play with us! Adult reading at the Carnegie-Hubble Telescope
TRINIDAD — The adult reading program is held each year during the first quarter. This year’s theme is A Universe of Stories: The story of the universe. We will be taking this year’s theme quite literally, the core of the pro- gram will be a series of presentations high- lighting astonishing discoveries about the world we live in. Also, we’ll be revisiting the very popular adult spelling bee, and we’ll feature a presentation on how to use the Library’s powerful databases. Two science fiction movies will round out the program. Pick up a reading list for science and science fiction books available at the Library.
The next program, Friday January 18, 5:30–6:30 pm, The Hubble telescope its history and images. The Hubble Telescope (HST) was launched in 1990 and since that time we have been awed and amazed at the images and data it has collected that allows us to gain insight into our universe further than imagined. From galaxies far away, to incredible super novas and nebulas, and the moon in our back yard it’s more than just pretty pictures. Come learn more about the Hubble Space Telescope.
The next programs will be held on: Tuesday January 29, 5:30–6:30 pm, “Other solar systems” and Tuesday, February 5 5:30–6:30 pm, “Measuring astronomical distances”.

The rally is in support of these themes: human rights, healthcare, justice, protection of environment and wildlife, voting rights, government accountability, and other progressive issues. Free diabetes prevention program
TRINIDAD — This free class series will take place Tuesdays from 2-3 pm and concludes on January 29 at the Las Animas County Health Department board room, 412 Benedicta Avenue. The next meeting is Tuesday, January 22. Food is power, but being overweight can cause health problems, including diabetes. Join us in preventing diabetes and keeping you healthy in 2019!

Self care series at Carnegie
TRINIDAD — Carnegie Library staff member, Rahma Siddiqui, attended medical school in Chicago. There, she saw first-hand how important lifestyle choices were to the overall mental, physical, and emotional health of a person. After graduating in 2014, she delayed residency to learn holistic healing methods. She created a highly successful and extensive self-care program in 2016 for her private clients.
This series is a condensed version of her original program, aimed at helping members of the community of Trinidad get a jumpstart on their New Year’s resolutions. Here’s the January schedule: The next event will be held Wednesday, January 23, 5:30 to 7 pm and covers “Nutrition”~How to figure out what diet is ideal for you and how to stick to it for the long haul (plus why it’s important). Borderlands of Southern Colorado-Maria Montoya presentation
TRINIDAD — The next installment of the Speaker Series at Trinidad History Museum, 120 S Chestnut Street, will be on Wednesday, January 23, 6 to 7:30 pm will feature Maria Montoya speaking on the Boderlands of Southern Colorado.
Maria E. Montoya is an Associate Professor of History at New York University and the Dean of Arts and Sciences at NYU Shanghai. She is the author of numerous articles on the History of the American West, Environmental, Labor and Latina/o history and of the book, Translating Property: The Maxwell Land Grant and the Conflict over Land in the American West, 1840-1900. She is the lead author on the U.S. History textbook, Global Americans: A Social
and Global History of the United States. She is also finishing up a manuscript, Fighting for the Fringe: Two Industrialists, Their Workers, and Employee Benefits, 1909-1950, which focuses on John D. Rockefeller and Josephine Roche, and their roles in de- fining the spheres of work and home life during the early 20th century. She is also working on two other manuscripts, A Chicana in China which is a memoir inspired by an earlier work of Rudolfo Anaya. She is also working on a book project about the scarcity of water in the American Southwest, and the Rio Grande in particular. She is currently the PI for Zaanheh: A Natural History of Shanghai which is an interdisciplinary research team based at NYU Shanghai, and which was inspired by Eric Sanderson’s Manhattan Project.
Hands on History at THM: Dungeons & Dragons
